21 Savage Reveals Why He Kept His British Origins A Secret

A few years ago one of the most surprising stories to ever hit the rap world dropped. 21 Savage, who by this point was already a superstar rapper most commonly associated with Atlanta, was arrested by ICE. Fans confused by why the immigration organization wanted anything to do with the rapper quickly got a surprise answer. That came with the reveal that he was actually born in England and came to the United States as a young child. Since then he had been staying in the country illegally, which is at the center of a recent revelation he made online.

Since his arrest Savage has made the most of the forced reveal of his origins. He eventually fought through legal battles to be freed from ICE containment. After that he went on to get his official US citizenship to settle any future worries about his stay in the country. He used that as a platform to launch his first ever European tour where he played hyped shows in places like Paris and his native London. While in the UK he even shot the stylish music video for his recent hit song “redrum.” But in a recent Instagram comment he clarified exactly why he kept things secret for so long and fans think he’s making a pretty good point. Check out what he had to say below.

21 Savage On Keeping His Birthplace A Secret

During an unrelated conversation on Instagram about Soulja Boy, a fan called Savage’s alleged Atlanta roots into question. He claimed that Savage kept his London origins a secret until it was beneficial for his rap career, but the rapper hit back with a pretty good explanation for why he kept things quiet. “Why tf would I tell yall I’m here illegally?” his comment reads. In the replies fans can’t help but agree with his logic.

What do you think of 21 Savage’s reasons for why he didn’t reveal to anybody that he was originally from London? Do you agree with fans that it doesn’t particularly matter and that he can claim Atlanta as his home town? Let us know in the comment section below.

Elliott Wilson Slammed For Offset & Quavo Post Featuring Gunna

Elliott Wilson is coming under fire on Twitter for posting a photo of Offset with Gunna next to a photo of Quavo wearing a “Free Young Thug” shirt. Fans believe he is trying to start drama between the two with the post. Ice of the Joe Budden Podcast was one of the voices to criticize Wilson, responding sarcastically: “hip hop journalism.”

“Documenting Quavo’s reaction to Offset kickin’ it with Gunna is actually hip-hop journalism,” Wilson fired back on Twitter. In another tweet, he added: “Trolling. Hating. Messy. Y’all talk in zesty internet terms. But often don’t know what you’re talking about.”

Real journalism tho bucko.” One replied: “This is Quavo 2nd time wearing this t-shirt and he has posted Free Thug on his IG story twice in last few months. He also has a happy bday post for him on his page. Stop reaching!”

Elliott Wilson Compares Offset & Quavo

The Offset and Quavo post isn’t the only drama Wilson has dealt with online in recent days. Kai carved his own lane in the game, built a platform, and deserves respect. French Montana Debates With His Kids Over Ice Spice Versus Latto

Unfortunately, it seems like fanbases are more propense to pit female rappers against each other rather than encourage collaboration. Whether that’s because of a more misogynistic industry landscape, interest in beef, or just pure coincidence is up for debate. Still, competition in rap is natural and even encouraged across all generations, because who wants to sit there and admit that they’re a worse MC than another? French Montana and his kids, though, approached this in quite the light-hearted way rather than feeding into the worst parts of those tendencies. While celebrating one of his sons’ graduation, the rapper acted as a mediator in a debate over whether Ice Spice is better than Latto or vice versa.

“Latto is better than Ice Spice!” the graduate exclaimed after one of French Montana’s friends, presumably, said as such. “He put you on video saying that,” his other son remarked before the graduate jumped in. “Nah, never,” the “I Can’t Lie” hitmaker said in an effort to moderate. “Y’all both equal, y’all both good.” Hilariously, his two sons joked about the femcees hitting them up.

French Montana Moderates Ice Spice Versus Latto Debate With Children

Interestingly enough, the 38-year-old has only worked with one of these artists so far. Him and Latto have a track with Ty Dolla $ign, “Striptease,” off of French Montana’s 2021 album “They Got Amnesia.” Of course, that’s not to say that French Montana and Ice Spice couldn’t have a collab in the future, just that he could’ve easily played into a bias with his comments. Fortunately, he was right to dismiss the competition, if only because his opinion as a fellow famous rapper could have more industry consequences than that of his kids. Let us know what you think of that debate in the comments down below.

Meanwhile, the Moroccan-American rapper is set to premiere his documentary For Khadija soon, which documents his experiences as an immigrant growing up in the Bronx during his teenage years. While the film doesn’t have a release date for wider release as of yet, it will premiere at the Tribeca Film Festival on Friday (June 16). It will surely be an emotive experience, and one that represents his hard-earned rise to bringing a better life for his family while being inspired by them. Rory & Mal Believe Ice Spice Wouldn’t Be As Successful If She Was Dark-Skinned

Ice Spice slander these days warrants an eye-roll in the face of all her success, hits, and clear ability, whether you think she capitalizes on it or not. However, Rory and Mal recently opened up an important yet tough conversation on the circumstances surrounding her meteoric rise. Moreover, the podcast hosts debated whether or not she only got such success because she’s of a lighter skin complexion compared to other similarly talented artists. In fact, their producer Demaris argued that she’s not even talented enough to warrant all that attention.

“If we saying that colorism doesn’t exist, a dark-skinned girl could never soar the way that fucking Ice Spice did off having zero to no talent,” she stated. “Ice Spice has no talent?” Rory replied. “You think Ice Spice is a talented rapper?” Demaris clapped back. “I think she’s a talented person,” he said after a pause. “Rap wouldn’t be it, but there’s a talent there.” Further on, Demaris said that she’s not trying to hate on the “Princess Diana” hitmaker, just that she doesn’t like her music. “If she was dark-skinned she would not be as big as she is,” she maintained. “That’s what I said. That’s not taking anything away from her.”

Rory & Mal Discuss Colorism & Ice Spice’s Success

Regardless of your take, it was quite the interesting debate that nonetheless had people advocating for her talent and skill. However, this wasn’t something that just came out of the blue during their conversation in the podcast episode. They addressed comments made online speculating on Ice Spice’s invite to the Met Gala as Anna Wintour’s special guest. Also, they brought up her recently formed relationship with Kim Kardashian. While it’s tough to toe these lines, there’s certainly a way to talk earnestly of the social and cultural context of the Bronx star’s success (especially when compared to other female rappers) while also not taking away from her positive and musically talented traits.

Meanwhile, we’re sure that such comments won’t faze the 23-year-old. In fact, even if she “doesn’t have talent,” she certainly has the will and ability to fix that. “He definitely inspired me to want to record,” she told Paper of his father, who was an underground rapper. “I remember being in the studio with him. I was a toddler, probably. And I remember little flashes. Of course, not every detail, but small things like that being shown to you at such a young age make an impression on you. Subconsciously, I ended up becoming an artist because I saw my father be one first. He’s a music lover himself. He’s a true hip-hop head, beyond me, honestly. He knows everything. He’s always educating me on hip-hop and s**t like that.” For the latest on Ice Spice and Rory and Mal, come back to HNHH.

21 Savage Surrendered To Police On Drug And Weapons Charges Connected To His 2019 ICE Arrest

Few updates have emerged in 21 Savage’s ICE immigration case after he was arrested in 2019 and held for nearly a month while he battled against the agency’s attempts to have him deported under questionable circumstances. However, today, Buzzfeed reported that the rapper recently found out about a warrant stemming from that arrest that was only issued earlier this month. He surrendered to Atlanta police Thursday and was released on bond the same evening.

According to Buzzfeed, the warrant, issued by a local magistrate after being filed on September 7, alleges felony drug possession and weapons possession during the ICE arrest in January of 2019, saying that he threw out a bottle of codeine when he was stopped and also had a handgun in the car. Savage’s attorney, Charles Kuck, told Buzzfeed he believes that the warrant was requested by ICE, which has refused to drop the rapper’s deportation case, to cover its own mistakes.

In a statement, Kuck said, “The warrant appears to have been sought at the behest of ICE, as the warrant was issued in the eve of an Immigration Court hearing in Mr. Joseph’s deportation proceeding, and is based upon events that transpired on the evening that ICE arrested Mr. Joseph over 2 and one-half years ago. There can be no doubt that ICE is seeking to cover its own errors in detaining Mr. Jospeh by pushing trumped-up charges against him and seeks to stop him from obtaining lawful permanent residence in the United States.”

ICE’s deportation case was initially based on felony drug charges which were vacated, on the grounds that 21 overstayed his visa as a child. The Atlanta-based rapper originally immigrated to the US at seven years old with his mother, with the visa expiring when he was 12 or 13. He has since pursued a U visa for his cooperation in a shooting involving a relative and in more recent months, applied for a green card. He has three children who are US citizens.

Adding insult to injury, Savage is scheduled to join J. Cole on his Off-Season tour tonight in Miami, but would have remained close at hand for a hearing over his immigration status on November 1.
