50 Cent Brings “Final Lap Tour” Lite To Canadian Festival Circuit; Killer Mike Takes It To Church: FEQ Recap

At the BET Awards last week, Killer Mike delivered a poignant speech as he accepted the award for Best Rap Album – another triumphant award show night for the Atlanta rapper in 2024. “Technically, I was not supposed to be here,” Killer Mike said about his infamous arrest outside the Grammy Awards earlier this year. That same night, he took home three Grammy Awards for Michael. “I was put in handcuffs, and I was marched out of this building. But I wanna tell you, look at God because I’m back, baby. I’m back.”

His faith in God is at the forefront of his efforts, naturally sprinkling references to his faith across his catalog, whether alongside El-P as Run The Jewels or in his solo catalog. His latest album Michael is an autobiographical body of work that explores his Atlanta roots, both through vigorous levels of rhyming over soulful backdrops and a deep dive into how God brought him through hardships to glory. These Grammy wins and accolades symbolize how he overcame trials and tribulations throughout his life and still surpassed the circumstances that could’ve led him astray. But this message becomes more urgent during his live shows. Accompanied by the Mighty Revival and DJ Trackstar, Killer Mike brought the good folks of Quebec City to a church sermon (albeit, with a bit more cussing and weed smoke).

Michael‘s Victory Lap

via Etienne Dionne/FEQ

As part of his summer 2024 tour dates, he made his way through several Canadian cities in support of his excellent 2023 album, Michael. His performance at Festival D’Été Quebec on Friday night (July 6th) felt like another victory lap in a storied career that has seen him reach incredible heights without compromising his artistic integrity. His stage show brought a distinctly Southern feel that embodied his resilience, tenacity, and faith in a Higher Power. The jewels he dropped weren’t those of solely a rapper but one who delivers his words with the conviction of a pastor.

He admittedly tried to stray from religious reference, though stories about Solomon prefaced the emotionally charged “MAMA” and his mini-speeches in between songs felt like notes of inspiration for those who’ve also felt like their back were against the wall. Still, this was a rap show after all, and songs like “RUN” and “DOWN BY LAW” got the energy right for the remainder of the evening. But, at the core of Killer Mike’s performance was bringing Atlanta to the Canadians. The album cuts got the audience excited, for sure, but hard-hitting bangers including Big Boi’s “Kill Jill” and Bone Crusher’s “Never Scared,” alongside cuts from Run The Jewels and R.A.P Music, kept the crowd’s vibrancy at an all-time high.

Following such a triumphant year so far – even with a few mishaps – Killer Mike’s performance felt like a victory lap for an artist who never played the industry game yet exceeded every expectation set against him. But with a breath of gratitude to his tone, his recent feats and festival performances are a testament to his grind and reaping the fruits of his labor.

The Final Lap Tour Makes Its Way To Quebec City

via Etienne Dionne/FEQ

The greatest measure of an artist’s hit-making prowess is how it translates to crowds outside of their prime demographic, specifically those that don’t even really speak the same language. At le Festival D’Été Quebec in Quebec City (a primarily non-English city), 50 Cent served up a platter of bangers for an hour-and-a-half that affirms his presence as one of hip-hop’s greatest showmen. Following 50 Cent’s epic Final Lap tour in 2023, which saw him celebrate the 20th anniversary of Get Rich Or Die Tryin, he’s clearly in high demand for the summer festival circuit across the world. As we covered in 2023, the Final Lap tour was undoubtedly the tour of the summer, one that brought hip-hop fans, both old and new together, to witness one of rap’s greats perform his biggest hits; timeless classics that have become a staple in hip-hop and pop catalogs.

50 Cent initially stated the Final Lap tour would be his final haul on the road before focusing on his television and film productions. But, after surpassing over $100M in ticket sales last year (making it one of the highest-grossing hip-hop tours of all time), there are plenty of markets that ha highly sought after in plenty of markets that he didn’t hit last year. Joined by his hypemen, Tony Yayo and Uncle Murda, the G-Unit trifecta delivered a more toned-down version of what they brought across North America last year, likely due to the venue change. Festivals provide ample room for pyrotechnics but the setup didn’t necessarily welcome some of the more theatrical elements, such as the wild t-shirt change that went viral last year and even the complex transitions throughout the set (i.e. popping out from under the stage).

The People Love 50

via Etienne Dionne/FEQ

Nonetheless, his performance in Quebec City is a microcosm of 50 Cent’s global appeal. Though the audience might not be entirely tuned into Power (“Big Rich Town” certainly wasn’t even close to being the highlight of the evening), the epic run as a solo artist and with G-Unit throughout the 2000s formed the baseline of his set that transcended language barriers, further emphasizing the grip he’s had on the world since the release of Get Rich Or Die Tryin’.

“I’m On Some Sh*t” may have felt like a bit of a lackluster opener for this audience, especially since the majority seemed unfamiliar with his mixtape run. But, you could imagine that records like “What Up Gangsta,” “Just A Lil Bit,” and “If I Can’t” had the nearly 80,000+ in attendance singing along word-for-word. But once he started going into the real hit records, from his collaborations with The Game to songs like “Candy Shop,” “In Da Club,” and other definitive songs of the mid-2000s, it further affirmed Fif as one of the culture’s pivotal figure who contributed to hip-hop’s global appeal, from his days bullying his peers on his early mixtapes to outshining each of them once he formally entered the game.

50 Cent Won’t Stop Pressing Diddy: “We Don’t Want Too Much Love”

50 Cent went after Diddy while performing in Phoenix, Arizona on March 3 at Talking Stick Resort Amphitheatre. The concert was a rescheduled show from his Final Lap Tour. His joke about Diddy arose while 50 was trolling the audience for their reaction to him bailing on his last show in the city when it was 115 degrees.

“I don’t know how y’all live out this motherf*cker, it was 115 degrees the last time I got here. Some of y’all cussed me out,” he said. “Called me all kind of names online.” From there, he added: “I love you, why don’t you love me back? Where is the love?! Hold on, hold on. We don’t want too much love. You know what happened to Brother Love. Let’s keep it down, not too much love.”

Busta Rhymes Reflects On 50 Cent’s Work Ethic During “Final Lap” Tour: “He Don’t Play”

Busta Rhymes says that 50 Cent’s the Final Lap tour was “the most incredible tour” he’s ever been on. He performed alongside the New York rapper for over 100 shows across the globe during the second half of 2023. The tour was in celebration of the 20th Anniversary of 50’s iconic album, Get Rich or Die Tryin’. Busta discussed the experience with Big Boy for an interview, earlier this week.

“Big up to 50 Cent for bringin’ us out there on his Final Lap tour,” he said. “Not only was that probably the most incredible tour that I’ve ever been on, and I’ve been on many. I’m saying that because every night, every arena was sold out. I’ve never been on a tour for five months. […] My last show was November 21. He’s still on that same tour. 50…that’s one thing. He don’t play with that work.”

Busta is far from the first person to speak on 50’s work ethic. Tony Yayo, who also performed on the Final Lap tour, recently spoke about how draining it was during an interview with VladTV. “I’m tired, we just did six shows back to back,” Yayo said. “50’s running on the stages, lifting cranes, switching seven outfits, he goes to the gym twice a day. 50’s not f*cking around.” Check out Busta’s comments on 50 below.

Tony Yayo Praises Eminem & Takes Issue With Dr. Umar’s Criticism

Tony Yayo says Eminem is one of the five best rappers of all time. He shared the praise while discussing Dr. Umar’s recent criticism of the legendary artist during an interview with VladTV. Umar had argued to Joe Budden that Em can’t be considered an all-time great because he’s white.

“I don’t agree with that,” Yayo began. “I f*ck with Dr. Umar but I don’t have to agree with everything he says. I don’t agree with that. Eminem in my top 5 of MCs. And that’s not because I’m down with him and not because you got the “Free Yayo” shirt on. It don’t have nothing to do with that. I was an Eminem fan once I heard ‘Renegade.’ That was it for me. Once I heard him rhyme against Jay.”

Yayo then argues that Eminem out-rapped JAY-Z on the song. “I’ma say Em, for me,” he said before adding, “Em always hold his own but then when I seen Em with 50, do songs with 50, and was hearing how he was coming. When I heard the footsteps for ‘Many Men.’ He got that from Poltergeist or something. Eminem is like– Nobody wanna battle that n***a.” From there, he discussed 50 Cent bringing Eminem out on tour in Detroit, last year. He put Eminem in a group with Drake, 50 Cent, and Snoop Dogg as artists who can draw massive crowds. Check out the full interview with VladTV below.

Tony Yayo says that 50 Cent’s Final Lap Tour was a “movie” he made “six figures” as a support act for the run of concerts. Speaking with VladTV, the G-Unit rapper explained how lucrative the tour was as well as his plans for getting into podcasting. The topic began with Yayo discussing his decision not to sell merch on the tour despite 50 making millions in that lane alone.

“His merch is in the millions. He’s an icon,” he said. “You can ask anyone — the people that ran the tour from Live Nation — they’ll tell you, ‘Your favorite rapper can’t do what 50 just did.’” From there, he explained: “I don’t ask for too much. I’m making six figures, so why would I bother you for more? It’s cool. I’m not worried about that. Trust me, I’m making a great check […] The money is great, the money is excellent.”

Tony Yayo Reveals He Made Six Figures Touring With 50 Cent: ‘I Don’t Ask For Too Much’

If you had the chance to see 50 Cent on his Final Lap Tour, then you know how epic the show was. Not only did 50 play his biggest hits from his debut album, Get Rich or Die Tryin’, but he also brought his G-Unit family.

Insert Tony Yayo, who was right by 50’s side during the entire tour, which stopped in over 70 cities and over 20 countries. 50 was on the road for the latter half of last year, touring between July and December.

Most recently, Tony Yayo sat down with Vlad TV to discuss exactly how great his experience touring with 50 was — especially regarding the finances. The “So Seductive” rapper revealed he made 6 figures… not too bad for a supporting act!

Tony Yayo speaks on 50’s greatness: “His merch is in the millions. He’s an icon. You can ask anyone — the people that ran the tour from Live Nation — they’ll tell you: ‘Your favorite rapper can’t do what 50 just did.’”

And while Tony didn’t have his merchandise to sell on the tour, he’s incredibly grateful for the profits he made by simply performing.

“I don’t ask for too much,” Tony states. “I’m making six figures, so why would I bother you for more? It’s cool. I’m not worried about that. Trust me, I’m making a great check. The money is great, the money is excellent.”

Tony also goes on to praise 50 for how well he took care of everyone.

“You gotta understand, lot of artists don’t get treated [well],” Tony continues. “People think that Fif is a bad guy, but when you’re staying in the Four Seasons, you got the Eiffel Tower there, you staying at the W in Bahrain sipping Ranis on the water. “There’s an F1 race track around the hotel. You just missed Giorgio Armani at breakfast. It’s a fucking movie! Working with 50 is a fucking movie, bro!”

50 Cent Opens G-Unit Films & Television Studio In Louisiana

50 Cent has officially opened a G-Unit Films and Television studio in Louisiana after the city council in Shreveport approved his lease of Millennium Studio. According to local news station KSLA12, he’ll only be paying $2,400 a year and maintenance fees for use of the building, which the city owns. In explaining why the city council voted in favor of the deal, Councilwoman Tabatha Taylor argued that 50’s presence will present residual effects for local businesses.

“We already know that 50 Cent is a mighty mogul in the entertainment business,” Taylor told the news outlet. “But, the residual effects for local businesses here is what’s going to be felt. We have rebranded Shreveport in the entertainment industry, and now we are considering ourselves back again as an entertainment mecca.”

50 Cent and Ed Sheeran have collaborated off the stage as well in previous years. Back in 2019, they made the song “Remember the Name” with Eminem. After its release, Sheeran spoke about his relationship with the two rappers on Hot Ones. “If you were to go into my school and go, at the height of Shady Records, at the height of Aftermath [Entertainment], and go, ‘Which one of these kids is gonna do a song with Eminem and 50 Cent?’ No one would’ve guessed me,” Sheeran joked at the time. “50 will probably disagree with this, [but] I don’t think 50 had a fucking clue who I was. I think afterward he was like, ‘Oh, the ‘Shape of You’ guy!’” Check out his appearance on The Final Lap tour below.

50 Cent’s Aerial Stunts On Tour Has Social Media Going Wild

Social media is in an uproar of a recently surfaced video from 50 Cent’s tour. In the clip, originally posted to TikTok, Fif emerges to the crowd from a large futuristic tower. Furthermore, Fif is suspended from the highest point of the tower by a stage harness. From afar, it’s an impressive feat. However, when you zoom in, it’s a little less awe-inspiring, given how Fif is just strapped into a harness and is dangling in mid-air. This has led to a deluge of reactions online.

However, most of the comments online responding to the clip were those of mockery. A number of people compared Fif to Spongebob after his Twisted Sister-inspired rock number at the end of The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie from 2004. Meanwhile, several others compared him, unfavorably, to Madonna and her own iconic wire work. Fif recently put Madonna on blast over her alleged BBL. Additionally, a number of people questioned the need for aerial work at all. “Fif not got any songs that call for this” was a common sentiment amongst respondents.

50 Cent Feuds With Dwight Howard

Meanwhile, Fif recently picked up a feud with Dwight Howard. “@dangerookipawaa [Top Dawg’s Instagram handle] gonna say you made eye contact with Dwight Howard,” 50 Cent’s post’s caption read. “Man me and Denzel thought that motherf-cker was alright man. WTF.” However, Howard actually responded to Fif’s jabs in the comments section of his post. “Glad I put a smile on your face,” he added with a laughing emoji.

Furthermore, Fif also went after Keefe D, the man currently facing trial for the murder of 2Pac. “Keefe D getting ready to go on trial for murder with a public defender. Damn throw a 🥷🏾 a bone or something. LOL,” 50 added. It’s believed that this comments were primarily aimed at Diddy, who Fif has previously taken aim at for being somewhat complicit in 2Pac’s death.
