NPR Tiny Desk Unveils The 2024 Black Music Month Series Lineup Featuring Tems, Flo Milli, Chaka Khan, & More

Even though it is not one of the biggest stages in music literally speaking, the NPR Tiny Desk is certainly one figurately. Over the course of about 16 years, hundreds upon hundreds of stars and legends have brought some of their best stuff to the platform. The iconic Washington D.C. locale in turn has provided with some truly memorable moments in pop culture. One thing that the producers do extremely well over there is that they are always welcoming to so many genres and artists of all walks of life. In June, the NPR Tiny Desk team is doing just that with their third annual “Black Music Month” series.

This event may ring a bell to people who remember Usher’s unforgettable performance. It gave us the hilarious “Hey. Oh. Hey. Watch this,” meme and the video is up to 23 million views. But this celebration is more than just for giggles. NPR has made a conscious effort to help bring attention to some of the industry’s influential voices and rising stars from the Black community. This time around, Tiny Desk producer and host, Bobby Carter, wanted to shed light on the talented women.

“We’re giving the ladies their flowers! We’re releasing nine Tiny Desk concerts from Black women who’ve paved the way… and others who are carving out their own paths”. All of them are queens in their own right who represent a beautiful array of genres, generations and walks of life”. According to HipHopDX, those nine women are Flo Milli, Tems, Tierra Whack, and Chaka Khan. Then, people will also get to see Kierra Sheard, Lakecia Benjamin, Meshell Ndegeocello, Brittney Spencer, and SWV. The Black Music Month celebration is already underway as of today (June 3), as Tems’ performance is already up.

What are your thoughts on the lineup of artists for the NPR Black Music Month series? Do you think that this will be the best year for the monthly celebration, why or why not? BbyMutha Delivers Her Experimentative Album “Sleep Paralysis”

If you have not heard of BbyMutha, you need to get hip right away. The Chattanooga, Tennessee rapper is bringing a refreshing sound to the current trap heavy scene in the South. The 34-year-old feels like that fun aunt in your family with how goofy and carefree she portrays herself in her music. Releasing material since 2017, her style has only gotten more experimental and trippier over the years. All that creativity has brought BbyMutha to this point in dropping maybe her best work to date with sleep paralysis.

Earlier this year in February, we got word that she would coming through with this project through press release. On the same day of that news, she went on to drop one of the album’s promotional tracks “go!” Furthermore, we can officially say that BbyMutha is now on her self-titled tour. It will run through June 2 and will also see her travel across the pond, a surely exciting thing for relatively small artist.

Listen To Sleep Paralysis By BbyMutha

Across this album, the expressive MC is delivering some incredibly rich and colorful beats. Surprisingly, BbyMutha only brought on two producers for it. Those two names inlcude J-Rick and Rock Floyd. Big ups to them for getting wacky and presenting some truly unheard of production. BbyMutha does not get lost in the fold though that much either. Outside of “piss!” there really is not a track that she takes a backseat to. Be sure to run up sleep paralysis with the links above.

What are your thoughts on this brand-new album sleep paralysis by BbyMutha? Is this her strongest body of work, why or why not? What tracks are you gravitating toward right now and why? Would this album have benefited further from guest performers? What do you view as the best song on the record? We would like to hear what you have to say, so be sure to leave your takes in the comments section. Additionally, always keep it locked in with HNHH for all of the latest news surrounding BbyMutha. Cardi B Fans Need To “Gear Up” For What She Has Coming Next

Cardi B isn’t your average 31-year-old. For starters, the New York native turned her career as a stripper into one as a Grammy Award-winning rap diva. Her debut album, Invasion of Privacy, beat Travis Scott’s ASTROWORLD at the ceremony in 2019, but she’s failed to give us a sophomore effort since. Hip-hop heads are eager to hear what Cardi’s been working so hard on over the past few years, especially knowing how many ups and downs she and her husband Offset have faced since then. The pair’s drama largely inspired her 2018 LP, and neither she nor the Migos alum seems opposed to turning their pain into art.

The latest releases to come from the Hustlers actress include her “Punteria” collaboration with Shakira as well as “Enough (Miami)” and “Like What (Freestyle).” In 2023, we heard from Cardi on “Bongos” with Megan Thee Stallion and as a feature on her man’s “JEALOUSY” single. Now, it looks like more could be coming from the black-haired beauty, based on her recent Twitter activity.

What Is Cardi B Working On?

On Wednesday (April 17), the “Bodak Yellow” hitmaker hopped on Twitter/X to share a message that has our attention. “Gear up,” she simply wrote, potentially addressing both the Bardi Gang and her competition. Cardi’s spoken candidly about feeling insecure about releasing her sophomore LP, but with legends like Missy Elliott backing her, we’re sure that millions will tune in to hear how her sound has evolved (and if it’s worthy of another Grammy).

Besides hinting at something big coming from her recent studio sessions, Cardi B has also been chatting with fans about how she keeps her bodacious body on point. Though she’s been open about past cosmetic surgeries, it’s still important for the mother of two to exercise and eat nutritious foods that fuel her up for balancing motherhood and superstardom. Erykah Badu’s Daughter Puma Curry Covers Keyshia Cole’s “Love” On Live: Watch

Erykah Badu’s reputation as a “maneater” of sorts amongst the men of hip-hop is no secret – just ask Cam’ron. The genre-bending vocalist shares children with Andre 3000, The D.O.C. and Jay Electronica, and it seems her second-born, Puma Curry, is already taking after her mother’s singing talents. In the past, the teenager has teamed up with her mom on creative projects, and she’s already amassed a substantial social media following for herself. On her Instagram, Curry shows off some of her best fashion moments, and she loves to sing for fans on Live from time to time.

Earlier this week, the black-haired beauty was streaming with thousands of followers when she began belting out an infectious R&B ballad. “Love” by Keyshia Cole was her track of choice, and now the clips from the IG Live are circulating online, some feel like Curry might’ve sung the song better than the original artist. “Why Keisha couldn’t sing it like that?! 😂” one user quipped beneath @livebitez’s post.

“Oh she definitely has it!! No question 🔥🔥🔥🔥,” another viewer wrote. With parents as talented as Badu and The D.O.C., it’s no wonder that Curry’s creativity seems to be boundless. It’s unclear if she has plans to release any original music, but on her IG feed Curry has shared more covers. On Tuesday (April 16) she took on Billie Eilish’s “Listen Before I Go,” earning a stamp of approval from her famous mother and thousands of others.

Puma Curry’s cover of one of Keyshia Cole’s biggest hits isn’t the only reason she’s been making headlines lately. Instead, it’s the R&B singer’s budding romance with Hunxho, who’s significantly younger than her, that has our attention at this time. Yung Miami Is “Tired” Of The Drama In Her Life Lately

The City Girls may be known for having bold attitudes, but that doesn’t mean they welcome drama into their personal lives. Unfortunately, like most celebrities, Yung Miami and JT find themselves caught up in internet beef, even recently going at one another on Twitter/X. Last week, it seemed as though tensions were brewing between the partners in rhyme as onlookers made comments about Miami not showing enough support to JT. Both women expressed frustration at how the opinions of others were coming between their close bond but were able to make up in the end.

Elsewhere, the Caresha Please host is still fighting off allegations of being a “sex worker” for Diddy, as alleged in Lil Rod’s lawsuit. Rather than running and hiding, Miami dropped off her “CFWM” single earlier this spring and has attempted to focus her energy on promoting that. However, another rising rap diva accused the Florida native of stealing her bars, resulting in even more drama. On Tuesday (April 16), the fashionista used her online presence to vent about how exhausting things have been for her lately.

Yung Miami Hints at Why She Didn’t Come Between GloRilla and JT

“I am a grown a** lady with two kids, I don’t have time to be inserting myself in anything that has nothing to do with me!” she wrote this morning. Some think that Miami’s referring to a spat between GloRilla and JT, but it’s hard to say for sure. “I don’t have a problem with anyone, please leave me alone!!!” the City Girl continued. “Every day I wake up on this app it’s something new, I am tired!”

As Yung Miami said, her main priority right now is promoting her “CFWM” single featuring Skilla Baby, and she doesn’t want any drama to distract from her delivery over the MIA JAY C-produced beat. Have you tapped into the femcee’s song yet? If not, check it out at the link below, and tap back in with HNHH later for more music/pop culture news updates.

Beyonce’s Country Album, Taylor Swift, And Lana Del Rey Don’t Have Courtney Love’s Approval

In her new interview with Standard, Courtney Love had a lot to say. For starters, she doesn’t mind being the villain in someone else’s story. “People used to say that I was so difficult,” she told the UK-based outlet. “They said I was disagreeable. Yes, I am completely disagreeable and I’m never going to apologize for that. I always wanted to be known as a b**ch,” the blonde icon said. According to her, the late Kurt Cobain sought social approval, while Love couldn’t be bothered wasting her energy on such things.

The musician has been promoting her new eight-part BBC Radio 6 Music series, which follows her as she reflects on other women in the industry who have shaped her journey. Among them are Black classics like Billie Holiday and Nina Simone, though Love had plenty to say about female entertainers she’s less fond of too. “I like the idea of Beyonce doing a country record because it’s about Black women going into spaces where previously only White women have been allowed, not that I like it much. As a concept, I love it. I just don’t like her music,” the Hole frontwoman said.

Courtney Love Has Plenty to Say About Other Women in the Music Industry

Elsewhere, her comments about another modern starlet are catching major heat online. “Taylor [Swift] is not important. She might be a safe space for girls, and she’s probably the Madonna of now, but she’s not interesting as an artist,” Love declared. Of Lana Del Rey, the 59-year-old added, “I haven’t liked Lana since she covered a John Denver song, and I think she should really take seven years off. Up until ‘Take Me Home Country Roads’ I thought she was great.”

No matter how Courtney Love might feel about Beyonce’s eighth studio album, we can’t deny the impact COWBOY CARTER has had so far. While the vocalist’s first-born, Blue Ivy Carter, joined her for most of the RENAISSANCE World Tour, it was Rumi’s turn to shine on the country-based LP. Thanks to the young girl’s work, she broke a record on the Billboard Hot 100 previously set by her older sister. Latto’s Top 3 Female Rappers List Has Hip-Hop Heads Asking Questions

Latto’s love for rap dates back to when the world still knew her as Alyssa Stephens, and her skills as a lyricist and performer have only grown since then. Now that she’s a dominant force thanks to her 777 LP, and has collaborations with Jennifer Lopez, Mariah Carey, and Lil Wayne, it’s nice to see that the blonde beauty has done her homework. In a recent interview, Latto spoke about her top three femcees, though her answer has left more than a few people confused.

“Who are your top three females of all time in hip-hop?” the journalist conducting asked her guest from off camera. “Dead or alive?” Latto clarified, suggesting some of her biggest inspirations might no longer be with us. “[Lil’] Kim, gotta say Kim,” the “Wheelie” artist began. “Wait, my favourite? Or like, the best?” Stephens paused again before sharing her final two picks. “Imma say [Lisa] “Left Eye” [Lopes], rest in peace. Anddd, shawty,” Latto added at the end, leading many to assume she meant Nicki Minaj.

Latto’s Top Female MCs Include Left Eye and Lil’ Kim

Based on their past drama, it’s easy to understand why the reality starlet would be reluctant to mention the Queen of Rap by name. Still, with the success of her ongoing Pink Friday 2 Tour, it’s hard not to give Minaj props for all she’s accomplishing. Elsewhere, some are questioning what qualifies Left Eye as “the best,” but seeing as Latto performed with TLC in place of the late MC at the iHeartRadio Awards recently, we get why the tribute felt important to her.

Outside of rap, Latto has been boo’d up with a mystery beau (rumoured to be 21 Savage) for some time now but refuses to share her relationship with the public. No matter what the status of her relationship is, there are still plenty of other people who want a shot at the “Big Energy” hitmaker, including Shaboozey. Does Megan Thee Stallion Have A Nose Job? Rap Diva Denies Rhinoplasty Rumours

As an Aquarius, Megan Thee Stallion is all about truth. Of course, the Houston native isn’t the good guy in everyone’s story, but she’s always moved in ways that feel most empowering for her and dealt with the consequences accordingly. Her relationship with Pardison Fontaine was a favourite to romanticize on social media, though the nasty aftermath of their lowkey break-up proves plenty was unfolding behind the scenes that Thee Hotties were unaware of. In a diss track dropped amid the beef, Fontaine accused his ex of undergoing lipo. She failed to address these allegations, but earlier this week, the black-haired beauty went live to shut down other rumours about her.

During a seemingly tipsy dinner with friends, Thee Stallion denied having rhinoplasty surgery to alter her nose. “I never read the comments,” she tells those dining with her in the video below. “You know I’m gorgeous,” Tina Snow hyped herself up, rocking huge hoop earrings and a low-cut black top. “She’s gorgeous,” her company for the evening echoed off-camera. “They be like, ‘Oh my God, she got her nose done.’ No, f**k y’all. Y’all h**s wish I got my nose done,” Meg told the camera while playing with her chopsticks.

“That’s right, you work too much. When would you even have downtime,” a male voice points out. “Y’all h**s need to comprehend how much recovery surgery take,” Thee Stallion ranted. She’s obviously been busy planning her upcoming tour with GloRilla, hitting the studio to record her album, and keeping up with all the drama unfolding between her contemporaries.

From an astrological perspective, we can explain the recent rise in hip-hop beef with the transition of various planets from watery, emotional Pisces into fiery, short-tempered Aries. People are all the more likely to say harsh things they regret in this pressure cooker of energy, such as J Cole dissing Kendrick Lamar and what’s been transpiring between the City Girls. Megan Thee Stallion’s New Album Might Not Have As Much “Pop That A** Music”

Female rappers have to fight twice as hard to be taken as seriously as their male counterparts. This seems largely due to their often-salacious material. Despite having all eyes on them while their booties are bouncing and bodies are bodying, hip-hop heads tend to forget the power behind people like Megan Thee Stallion’s pen. Her bars on tracks like “Freak Nasty,” “Cash S**t,” and “WAP” are in the caption under countless NSFW Instagram posts, but for her upcoming album, it sounds like the Houston native is thinking about switching things up.

“How many songs do y’all feel like y’all wanna hear on this album?” Thee Stallion asked her Instagram followers during a Live session this week. “In my mind, I was thinking 14, but I keep recording songs that’s so good!” According to the brunette beauty, her moods have been consistently changing lately, causing her to create a lot of different vibes throughout her music. “The first 20 songs I had, I’m just straight rapping. And then I started being in a better mood, so it’s like feel-good songs, and then I got in a ratchet mood ‘cuz you know it’s about to be summertime!” she shared.

Though it’s in her nature to make twerk-worthy anthems, Thee Stallion is feeling somewhat reluctant due to the hate she received in the past. “I just remember how y’all used to really whack me for making pop that a** music,” the multi-talent teased. “I really wanted to get on y’all’s a**es and show y’all how bad I can rap, so I really haven’t been in touch with my roots. I’m tryna see if y’all wanna pop that a**, what it’s giving?” The fashionista promised that her rappity rap tracks are coming through no matter what. Still, she’s curious to know how much people are planning on being outside and acting bad over the coming months.

Megan Thee Stallion isn’t the only femcee who’s excited about what she’s cooking up in the studio lately.
