Eminem Drops New Single “Tobey” Featuring BabyTron and Big Sean

Only a month after igniting the music world with “Houdini,” the first single off his upcoming album The Death of Slim Shady (Coup De Grâce), Eminem returns with “Tobey.”

Featuring fellow Michigan hip-hop heavyweights BabyTron and Big Sean, “Tobey” presents a new, yet familiar side of Eminem. The track, layered over a sparse beat by producers Daniyel, Cole Bennett, John Nocito, Car!ton, and Marvy Ayy, showcases the trio’s lyrical prowess and the vibrant musical landscape of Detroit rap.

Eminem first teased “Tobey” via a short video on his social media on June 29, hinting at the return of his hockey-masked Slim Shady persona. The teaser also included a snippet from the Cole Bennett-directed video set to release this Friday, July 5. “Tobey” is the second single from Eminem’s highly anticipated 12th album, slated for release on July 12.

The album’s first single, “Houdini,” dropped on May 31 and became an instantaneous global hit. It debuted at #1 on the Billboard Global 200 and Streaming Songs charts and at #2 on the Hot 100. “Houdini” continues to dominate, sitting in the top 20 of the Spotify Global and US charts, the Apple Music Global chart, and the Top 40 and Rhythmic radio charts. It is Eminem’s highest-charting single since 2013’s “The Monster” and his first to chart on Rock radio.

With “Tobey,” Eminem proves once again that he remains a powerhouse in the hip-hop world.

Eminem Digs Up Controversial Melle Mel Beef On New Single “Tobey”

Eminem loves to poke fun at other people. He’s been doing it since his debut album, and he’s been praised and criticized in equal measure for keeping it up as a veteran. The first single for Em’s new album, “Houdini,” contained a dig at Megan Thee Stallion. His latest single, “Tobey,” has one aimed squarely at hip-hop legend Melle Mel. He may seem like a random target, but Em has actually been beefing with the Furious Five frontman for years.

The diss in question comes towards the end of “Tobey.” Eminem dedicates a whole couplet to Melle Mel and their past disagreements. “Get dissed though and by a pioneer. Who was one of the reasons why I am here,” Em raps. “They tell me I should just let that shit go and slide (Why?). ‘Melle Mel shouldn’t get no reply (Why?). ‘That man is a legend,’ b*tch, so am I (Haha, yeah).” Context is going to helpful here. So Melle Mel made headlines in 2023 when he dismissed Eminem’s contributions to rap. “If you were talking about rhyme style, okay he got a rhyme style,” Mel told DJ Vlad. “But he’s white. He’s white.” The rapper did not appreciate the racial bias, so he fired back on the song “Realest.”

Eminem Feels He Matches Melle Mel’s Legend Status

It gets weirder and more complicated from there. Melle Mel decided to respond to Eminem’s diss with a song called “Kickback.” It was universally panned, and led to the Furious Five rapper issuing an apology to Eminem. “Regrettably, my response fell short in its execution,” Mel wrote. “I accept full responsibility for the misjudgment.” It seemed as though things between Eminem and Melle Mel had blown over, but the former still has some additional digs to get in.

The verse on “Tobey” isn’t so much a rehash of the beef as a reminder than Eminem is more important than Melle Mel gave him credit for. He has a point when he was derided to for dissing Mel, on the merits that he’s a genre pioneer. Eminem is the biggest-selling rapper of all time, and has influenced (for better or worse) generations of imitators. Hence the line “‘That man is a legend,’ b*tch, so am I.” Based on how poorly things went last time, we imagine Melle Mel is going to chill out on recording a response.

Big Sean Gives Eminem His Flowers After Their Latest Collab Single

Big Sean and Eminem don’t have a lot in common on the surface. Well, corny punchlines aside. Sean is a hitmaker, a lyricist who dedicates himself to making smooth, R&B-influenced music. Em is the definitive lyrical miracle, a wordsmith who can seemingly make anything rhyme (angrily). That said, these Detroit superstars get along. They have collaborated multiple times over the years, but their new single may be their best yet. It may be a hit, but for Big Sean, it means something much more.

Sean hopped on X (formerly Twitter) to reflect on the new single, “Tobey.” The former GOOD Music star took the opportunity to reveal some interesting details about his past. Namely, the first rap album he ever bought. “Not gon hold you,” he explained. “Slim Shady LP was the first CD I bought wit my own money at Costco.” He then broke down the ways in which this childhood purchase led him to this specific moment in time. “Me n Em bout 4 songs in now (DVE, No Favors, Detroit 2 Cypher),” he noted. “But being on The Death of Slim Shady is full circle. I ain’t know when I bought that, that I’d be one of the next 1’s out da city…”

Eminem Has Also Praised Big Sean In The Past

In a separate tweet, Big Sean praised Eminem for being “real” in his interactions. The praise has run both ways for quite some time, however. Em named Big Sean as one of the rappers who inspire him to work on his craft and not get lazy. “I don’t hyper-focus on numbers and being on charts,” he told XXL in 2022. “What I hyper-focus on is people like Kendrick Lamar, Joyner Lucas, J. Cole and Big Sean, and watching them and how the f*ck they’re doing their sh*t. Because they’re also focused on being the best rappers.”

If we let Sean tell it, Eminem considers him to be one of the most dangerous emcees alive. The rapper went on Big Boy Radio to relay Eminem’s high praise after the release of “No Favors.” “He was telling me how much he loved my verse,” Big Sean recalled. “He was like, ‘I respect you […] you’re one of the most dangerous emcees.” An unlikely pairing, but one that has seemingly stood the test of time. Especially for Detroit fans.

Eminem Is Still Feeling Salty About His ‘Hilarious’ Ranking On A List Of The Greatest Rappers Of All Time

Last year, Billboard ranked the 50 greatest rappers of all time, a list that no one had any problems with and everyone agreed with. Everyone except Eminem, that is. He was placed at #5, one slot ahead of The Notorious B.I.G. and behind only Tupac (No. 4), Nas (No. 3), Kendrick Lamar (No. 2), and Jay-Z (No. 1), but on “Tobey,” his new song with Big Sean and Babytron, Eminem voiced his displeasure with the ranking.

“I got so many stories, but I hate ceilings / Ain’t feelin’ your top five favorite rappers / So I know they ’bout to be pissed at me,” he raps on the track. “But this, to me, is a mystery / How rappers I’ve already ripped could be / Higher up on a list than me / Yet here I sit on your list though at five, wished it was fine / But just know inside, to me, that sh*t’s hilarious.”

Eminem also had words for Melle Mel, of Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five, who thinks Em is only considered a top-five rapper because he’s white. “So when I get dissed though and by a pioneer who was one of the reasons why I am here / They tell me I should just let that shit go and slide / ‘Melle Mel shouldn’t get no reply’ / ‘That man is a legend,’ bitch, so am I,” he raps.

Here’s That Mash-Up Of Eminem And Dua Lipa’s ‘Houdini’ Songs You Were Looking For, Courtesy Of Foster The People

It’s bound to happen that songs with the same exact title exist, but it was a little bit strange when it happened with two popular artists over the past year: Dua Lipa dropped “Houdini” in November 2023, then Eminem came through with his own song of the same name this May. Both of those tunes, though, are behind Foster The People’s “Houdini,” from their hit 2011 debut album Torches.

Now, Foster The People have decided to have some fun with all the magical tracks and make a mash-up.

The band’s Mark Foster shared a video explained the he thought it’d be fun to mash up the three songs, so he gave it a go. The video then shows him in a studio, tweaking with various aspects of all three songs before finding a way to combine them into the resulting mash-up.

Foster The People has a new album, Paradise State Of Mind, set for release on August 16, and it’ll be their first album in a while, since 2017’s Sacred Hearts Club. Meanwhile, Eminem just released a new song today: “Tobey,” with Big Sean and BabyTron. As for Lipa, she’s fresh off the release of her latest album, Radical Optimism.

Check out the mash-up video above.

Eminem continues the rollout for his new album The Death Of Slim Shady (Coup De Grâce) today with a new song. “Tobey” features Em’s fellow Detroiters Big Sean and BabyTron — what a look for the latter — and finds the trio trading verses full of their signature punchlines.

Yesterday, Em shared a trailer revealing the release date for the long-awaited album, which will be his first since 2020’s Music To Be Murdered By and his twelfth studio album overall. The controversial MC got the ball rolling with the release of “Houdini,” a comedic single calling back to his Eminem Show single “Without Me,” complete with a return of his Rap Boy persona from that video (he even did his own stunts in the new video).

However, not everybody enjoyed the return of the trollish persona. Megan Thee Stallion fans called out the rapper for making a joke of her injuries in the lyrics to the song, while defenders argued that he’s always made light of serious situations. Whether “the dead of Slim Shady” will mean an end to such juvenile “jokes” remains to be seen.

Eminem Has A Winner With Big Sean & BabyTron-Assisted “Tobey”

Fans were uncontrollably excited for Eminem to drop “Houdini” when the single was announced. While it is running up the streams, there is a decently large camp that is not messing with the track. The complaints surrounding it are that a fair number of the bars are corny, and the flows are awkward. While it was his mission to revive that classic Slim Shady goofiness, the magic was not recaptured entirely. However, Eminem haters are going to have a hard time tearing down “Tobey”.

The legendary Detroit MC announced the second promotional record from The Death of Slim Shady a few days ago, and a lot of people were a little nervous. Some felt that this could be one of the better songs of 2024 or one of the worst. Fortunately, the former is a more accurate way to describe it, as Em, Big Sean, and BabyTron all rap with serious hunger. The latter was a surprising grab for most, but when you think about it, Tron’s style is fairly similar. The Ypsilanti native also loves to incorporate odd and humorous bars into his verses and the same is true on “Tobey”. He handles the chorus and the opening verse and does a great job of setting the tone.

Then, the second generation of Michigan rap stars, Big Sean, comes in. He also kills it with speedy flows and carries the momentum effortlessly. Eminem then finishes things off with a more serious tone, as he focuses on his legacy and where he feels he deserves to be in hip-hop lore. Finally, what about the instrumental? This time around it is more minimal with main feature being twinkling and ghostly keys with some swelling synths, guitar, and lowkey drums laying underneath. Overall, “Tobey” is a very great effort from Eminem and figures to have a lot of replay value when the album drops.

Eminem Reveals The Artwork For Highly Anticipated Single “Tobey”

Eminem will always have fans on the edge of their seats for new music and today is no different. In just a few short hours he will be dropping off the second and possible final single for The Death of Slim Shady, “Tobey”. The track has been generating a lot of buzz ever since it was announced a few days ago. Part of the reason for that is because of the guests coming along for the ride. Two fellows Michiganders, Big Sean and BabyTron, will be lending their talents to the track. Eminem is doing a cool thing with “Tobey”, as all three MCs are essentially repping three different generations of Detroit hip-hop.

Marshall Mathers is playing into that aspect even more on the artwork, which he just revealed on his Instagram moments ago. It recreates the iconic Spider-Man meme where two spiderweb-weaving superheroes are pointing at each other. That iconic Marvel character seems to be the main theme of “Tobey” as the song is a partial homage to actor Tobey Maguire. He portrayed the masked vigilante in the original films in the early 2000s. As most superhero super fans would know, Spider-Man becomes Spider-man after being bit by a radioactive arachnid.

However, for Eminem, Sean, and Tron, they seem to have been nibbled on by a goat. The latter’s lyrics were teased in the trailer toward the end, and he rapped, “Tobey Maguire got bit by a spider, but see, me? It was a goat“. If that is any indication, this looks to be a more of a braggadocious cut. However, we will find out sooner than later, as “Tobey” drops at 12 p.m. EST. Some fans were a little surprised that it did not drop at midnight, but Eminem never revealed the time in the original teaser.

What are your thoughts on the cover art for Eminem’s upcoming single “Tobey” with Big Sean and BabyTron? Is this going to be a better track than “Houdini”, why or why not? Are you surprised that Eminem is dropping his new album next Friday? We would like to hear what you have to say, so leave your thoughts in the comments. Additionally, always keep it locked in with HNHH for all of the latest news surrounding Eminen, Big Sean, and BabyTron. Finally, stay with us for everything else going on in the music world.

Eminem Is Reincarnated As A Demon Baby (?) In His Latest ‘The Death Of Slim Shady’ Teaser Clip

The obituary Eminem placed in the Detroit Free Press newspaper to promoted his upcoming might have been extreme, but that’s his norm. The “Houdini” rapper’s latest promotional clip is even more shocking.

Today (July 1), Eminem took to his official X (formerly Twitter) page to announce the official release date for The Death Of Slim Shady (Coup De Grâce). Instead of a simple reveal, Eminem shared a suspense-filled teaser visual to break the news.

“OH SH*T!!! THE DEATH OF SLIM SHADY (COUP DE GRÂCE) ☠ 7/12,” he wrote.

Although the caption of the post delivered the calendar goodies, frankly that isn’t the most exciting part of the upload. In line with Eminem’s latest string of music video and teasers influenced by movies (Batman and Friday The 13th), this clip is an eerily mashup of The Omen and Seed Of Chucky.

As the video opens, the audience is witness to the gift of life (the complete opposite theme of the forthcoming project). However, there’s a catch. After the doctor frantically attempts to revive the unresponsive newborn, his efforts pay off. Instead of a bouncing bundle of joy, a demon baby terrorizes the hospital room. With Slim Shady slated to be killed off, is Eminem seemingly reincarnated in the worst way.
