Quavo Recruits Rock Legend Lenny Kravitz For Recreation Of Iconic Song “FLY AWAY”

Quavo and Lenny Kravitz have a song together called “FLY”. That is a sentence that many music fans might have never thought they would ever hear. However, we can say that today, as the trap rap mainstay and rock and roll legend’s collaboration is available everywhere. The former Migos leader previewed this song about a week ago or so to some pretty negative reactions. Overall, he seems to be in new creative rhythm as of late, with his country/pop rap crossover “Tough” with Lana Del Rey being the kick starter. That track has been blowing up since its release in early July, raking in over 84 million streams.

Overall, we feel that “Tough” is deserving of its popularity thanks to its solid execution and quality performances from Quavo and Lana. However, we can see why the initial reactions to “FLY” were what they were. Some called it a piece of “high school music” and that’s a pretty accurate description. This feels like a blatant cover of Lenny Kravitz’s radio hit “Fly Away” in the worse way possible. It comes across a cash grab thanks to including the rocker’s OG chorus with some trap production slapped onto it. There is a plethora of rap/rock crossovers that we would recommend over “FLY”, sadly. Still, give it a try below and let us know what you think.

XXL Freshman Class Of 2024 Includes BigXthaPlug, ScarLip, Cash Cobain & More

It’s time to find out who part of the hip-hop industry thinks will lead the genre into the future (however controversially), as XXL‘s Freshman Class of 2024 is here. Moreover, for those unaware, the publication does a yearly round-up of the hottest new names in rap right now, whether they’re just getting started, are getting long-overdue recognition, or already rose to the art form’s upper echelons. We won’t tease it any further: this year’s picks are 4batz, Hunxho, Scar Lip, Rich Amiri, BigXthaPlug, Cash Cobain, Maiya The Don, Skilla Baby, That Mexican OT, Lay Bankz, and Bossman Dlow. Southside will provide the beats. Folks are very excited to see what they bring to the freestyles and cyphers, and we’re sure that will be a pretty cool content farm to witness.

Furthermore, many of these artists have big 2024 hits, or are following up on a breakout 2023. In addition, many MCs here have been putting in work for far longer, and it’s great to see this deserved, albeit late praise. That’s always part of the contradiction and tough balance that a XXL Freshman Class strives to achieve, and no list is perfect. After all, folks may remember how Ice Spice joined the rank of musicians that turned down the cover opportunity, so the stars don’t always align.

XXL‘s Freshman Class Of 2024

However, we also want to take this time to point fans to other initiatives by XXL to showcase talent beyond this Freshman Class rollout. For example, the publication hosted an all-femcee cypher boasting fiery verses from Latto, Flo Milli, Monaleo, new freshwoman Maiya The Don, and Mello Buckzz. It was a great moment to witness, and one that they might want to indulge in further since the Freshman Classes haven’t garnered as much hype as they used to. Maybe more cyphers and freestyle showcases could revive some of that hype and set better standards.

All that aside, we all know how infamously some XXL Freshman Class moments live on within Internet circles. In fact, Steve Lacy proved this very recently with his comical reimagining of Ty Dolla $ign’s Freshman freestyle. If this new group of MCs don’t all stun lyrically in 2024, then fans at least expect some fun moments and viral showcases to assess the state of the art form this year. While hip-hop is much bigger than any one group of newcomers, it’s nonetheless very exciting to focus on the new guard and witness what could be historic benchmarks.

SZA is easily one of the biggest artists in the entire world right now. Overall, she has certainly earned that standing in the industry. Erykah Badu’s Daughter Puma Curry Covers Keyshia Cole’s “Love” On Live: Watch

Erykah Badu’s reputation as a “maneater” of sorts amongst the men of hip-hop is no secret – just ask Cam’ron. The genre-bending vocalist shares children with Andre 3000, The D.O.C. and Jay Electronica, and it seems her second-born, Puma Curry, is already taking after her mother’s singing talents. In the past, the teenager has teamed up with her mom on creative projects, and she’s already amassed a substantial social media following for herself. On her Instagram, Curry shows off some of her best fashion moments, and she loves to sing for fans on Live from time to time.

Earlier this week, the black-haired beauty was streaming with thousands of followers when she began belting out an infectious R&B ballad. “Love” by Keyshia Cole was her track of choice, and now the clips from the IG Live are circulating online, some feel like Curry might’ve sung the song better than the original artist. “Why Keisha couldn’t sing it like that?! 😂” one user quipped beneath @livebitez’s post.

“Oh she definitely has it!! No question 🔥🔥🔥🔥,” another viewer wrote. With parents as talented as Badu and The D.O.C., it’s no wonder that Curry’s creativity seems to be boundless. It’s unclear if she has plans to release any original music, but on her IG feed Curry has shared more covers. On Tuesday (April 16) she took on Billie Eilish’s “Listen Before I Go,” earning a stamp of approval from her famous mother and thousands of others.

Puma Curry’s cover of one of Keyshia Cole’s biggest hits isn’t the only reason she’s been making headlines lately. Instead, it’s the R&B singer’s budding romance with Hunxho, who’s significantly younger than her, that has our attention at this time. Read what Cole had to say about that at the link below, and check back later for more hip-hop/pop culture news updates.

Robin Thicke Cosigns 4batz With A Cover Of “Act ii: date @ 8”

One of the breakout hits of 2024 so far came from R&B singer 4batz. His pitched-up single “act ii: date @ 8” started as a TikTok hit. A fan responded to a question about what music videos don’t fit the vibe of the song at all, netting the track quite a bit of attention. It’s snowballed into a full-on hit from there hitting the Hot 100 earlier this year. The song currently sits at #68 just a few weeks after hitting its peak spot at #59. Beyond just connecting with R&B fans it’s also clicked with numerous celebs.

The most recent of which is an R&B hitmaker in his own right, Robin Thicke. The “Blurred Lines” singer took to Instagram earlier this week to reveal how much he liked the song and even share his own cover version of it. “on repeat” he captioned a video of himself performing the track at his home playing keyboard and singing. Unsurprisingly, the experienced singer delivers an incredibly smooth rendition of the song even without pitching up his vocals. Check out his cover version and some of the fan reactions to it below.

Robin Thicke Covers 4batz’s Breakout Hit

Robin Thicke is far from the only big name in music who’s enjoying “act ii: date @ 8.” Earlier this week Drake shared his appreciation for the song and made a pretty significant announcement. He took to his Instagram story to tease a remix of the song. Unfortunately he didn’t confirm when fans might be able to hear his version of the song.

That came just a few days after Kanye West also revealed he’s a fan of the new track. The embrace from major figures in music has resulted in some allegations of being an industry plant being leveled at 4batz. What do you think of Robin Thicke’s take on 4batz’s breakout hit “act ii: date @ 8?” Are you a fan of the unique-sounding R&B hit? Let us know in the comment section below.

Best R&B Covers Of Mary J. Blige’s “Real Love” Classic

On August 25, 1992, Mary J. Blige released “Real Love,” the second single from her debut album, What’s the 411? Over three decades since it dropped, the song is now widely regarded as an R&B classic. During a recent tribute performance by Summer Walker, “Real Love” is one of the songs the singer covers. Unfortunately, the performance has caught mixed reactions since it reached the internet. Although Walker is a great singer herself, fans argue that better covers of “Real Love” exist.

Certainly, many covers of “Real Love” have been made by several artists across different genres. However, many of the best ones we’ve seen keep the song true to its R&B roots. There are a multitude of gifted vocalists around the world, and some truly blessed singers have covered this track. Here’s a list of some of the best covers of “Real Love” that exist.

Ciana Pelekai

Singer and YouTuber Ciana Pelekai uploaded her cover of “Real Love” to YouTube on May 21, 2020. It is a really simple video and shows Pelekai performing the song karaoke-style from the comfort of her home. However, a good vocalist is recognizable with or without big production, and Pelekai delivers a great performance. She infuses just the right amount of emotion into her singing and effortlessly glides through the entire song. Many other covers are available on her channel, but the “Real Love” video is a must-watch.

Coco Jones

In celebration of Black Music Month 2023, REVOLT and Xfinity invited Coco Jones to perform “Real Love” on an episode of The Link Up. The episode was uploaded to REVOLT’s YouTube channel on June 19, and they describe Jones’s cover as a “modern twist” of the classic. Admittedly so, considering the interesting choices that are made with the performance. It features an ensemble of musicians playing several instruments, ranging from a cello to a vocoder. Everything is held together by Coco Jones, whose voice glides through it all like butter.

Alicia Keys

It’s no coincidence that Alicia Keys is on this list. Despite the drama concerning her performance at the Super Bowl, Keys is a great vocalist, and that’s a fact. During a One Night Only event in 2011, the singer performed Blige’s classic. Although she only briefly covers “Real Love,” Alicia Keys’s performance of the song leaves a lasting impression. While many would argue that nobody else can sing it quite like Mary J. Blige, Keys’ voice is also a really good fit. Her cover, only accompanied by a piano which she plays, is simple but profound.

Dia Malai

For her blind audition at NBC’s The Voice in October 2022, Dia Malai performed this smash hit. Despite the nerves, she undoubtedly feels Malai covers “Real Love” like a pro. Merely seconds after she started singing, she received a turn from John Legend, and rightly so. While the rest of the performance went by without any more turns, the singer undoubtedly brought the heat on stage. Her vocals and stage presence were right on point.

Kelly Clarkson

Kelly Clarkson is the queen of covers, and she absolutely devoured “Real Love” when she performed it on her show. In the middle of every episode of the Kelly Clarkson Show, the singer covers a song that is a hit every single time. Fans now lovingly refer to this segment of the show as “Kellyoke.” Without a doubt, it is one of the highlights of the entire. Time after time, it showcases what an incredible singer Clarkson is. She has a reputation for eating up every song she sings, and she certainly left no crumbs on “Real Love.”

Teezo Touchdown Cover Talking Heads’ “Making Flippy Floppy” For A24

Teezo Touchdown has quickly become one of the most sought after multi-hyphenates in the music industry. We primarly cover him when it pertains to hip-hop crossovers. However, this instance is for something totally different. After nabbing a big time placement on Lyrical Lemonade and Cole Bennett’s debut tape All is Yellow, the Texan is now assisting an indie film company with a soundtrack. That brand is A24, who in the latter half of last year got the chance to re-release the Talking Heads’ independent 1984 concert film Stop Making Sense. Teezo Touchdown is one of the artists that is going to be featured on the soundtrack as he covers Talking Heads’ “Making Flippy Floppy.”

According to Uproxx, alt rock band Paramore were the first to cover a track from the 1983 record Speaking In Tongues. They remade “Burning Down the House,” and now Teezo is the second artist to make the cut. The 40th anniversary remaster of the film hit theaters on September 22. However, the accompanying project of covers is still awaiting a release date.

Listen To “Making Flippy Floppy” By Teezo Touchdown

However, we do have the name of the project, which is Everyone’s Getting Involved: A Stop Making Sense Tribute Album. The Talking Heads and Teezo Touchdown are honestly a mirroring image of each other. Both are extremely unconventional artists which makes things conventional in that sense. Teezo’s wild and entertaining voice steal the show and it would making Talking Heads proud.

What are your thoughts on this brand-new single, “Making Flippy Floppy,” by Teezo Touchdown? Is he the best genre-bending hip-hop adjacent artist out right now, why or why not? What was your favorite element of the song and why? Should he do more Talking Heads covers? We would like to hear what you have to say, so be sure to leave your takes in the comments section. Additionally, always keep it locked in with HNHH for all of the latest news surrounding Teezo Touchdown. Finally, stay with us for the most informative song posts throughout the week.

Fans Call Out Publication For Mistaking Skepta For Wiley In Antisemitism Article

Wiley has lost his Member of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire honor amid the fallout from his past antisemitic comments. After a lengthy investigation into remarks he made in 2020, the Cabinet Office confirmed on Friday that they stripped the rapper of his award. Deadline has since come under fire for mistakenly using a picture of Skepta in its article covering the story.

“Anti-Semites like Wiley must understand that we will work tirelessly to hold them to account,” said Stephen Silverman, director of investigations for the Campaign Against Anti-Semitism, in a statement to the BBC. “For four years, we have worked to ensure that Wiley faces ruinous consequences for his unhinged anti-Semitic tirade, for which he has shown no remorse. Today’s decision is a vindication of that effort.”

Deadline Mistakes Skepta For Wiley

As for Wiley’s controversial comments, he wrote on Twitter back in 2020: “Ther are 2 sets of people who nobody has really wanted to challenge #Jewish & #KKK,” he wrote. “But being in business for 20 years you start to understand why … Red Necks Are the KKK and Jewish People are the Law…Work that out. Jewish people don’t care what black went through they just use us to make money to feed their kids… for generations as well.” In further posts, he dragged Drake into the rant. Clipping’s Cover Of J-Kwon’s “Tipsy” Drops On Streaming

When you think of artists who might cover J-Kwon’s early 2000’s party-rap classic “Tipsy,” experimental rap trio Clipping aren’t among the first names to come to mind. Despite often dabbling in a much darker and noisier side of rap music, the group have often shown their appreciation for more conventional rap classics. The lead single from their most recent album “Say The Name” is built around an interpolation of the Geto Boys song “My Mind Is Playing Tricks On Me” for example.

They showed off that range when they decided to cover J-Kwon’s debut single “Tipsy.” The song originally hit number two on the Hot 100 back in 2004 and Clipping chose to cover it back in 2020. It was released as part of a compilation called Save Stereogum designed to generate money for the titular publication during the COVID Pandemic by getting artists to cover songs from the 2000’s. Now the song is available separately from the compilation for the very first time. It was released as the A-side of a new split single alongside Cooling Prongs’ noise song “Midnight.” Check out the unique cover in its entirety below.

Clipping’s Wild Take On “Tipsy”

Clipping fans haven’t heard from the band since 2020’s Visions Of Bodies Being Burned. But that doesn’t mean their frontman Daveed Diggs has been quiet. Last year, he flexed his acting talent when he took on a role in the live-action The Little Mermaid movie. He starred as Sebastian the crab in a diverse cast of talents with both acting and music experience.

The lead role in the film was played by another musician, Halle Bailey. During the lead up to the film Diggs had special praise specifically for Bailey as an actress and do-it-all creative. What do you think of Clipping’s louder and more distorted take on “Tipsy?” Let us know in the comment section below.
