Nas Announces New TV Series In Development With A Producer From “Power”

Rappers trying their hands at film and television is nothing new. Sometimes this comes in the way of acting roles and other times it’s more of a behind-the-scenes presence. That’s where Nas comes in as he’s just begun the development process for a new TV show. The series is reportedly going to tell the story of the first-ever black grandmaster in chess Maurice Ashley. Deadline reports it’s due for an eight-episode first season. But he isn’t working on the show alone and one of the collaborators he recruited has experience in the space between rap and television.

Nas is teaming up with Mark Canton, who has served as a producer on 50 Cent’s show Power and some of its spin-offs. In discussions about the collaboration the rapper seemed pretty excited at the potential. “I’m grateful to be part of bringing Maurice Ashley’s incredible life to the screen. His story is one of greatness and his perseverance will continue to inspire the next generation of thinkers,” he said. Ashley himself also spoke out about the project. He expressed his thanks for those fighting to make sure his story is told and the importance he feels it conveys.

Nas Working On A New TV Show About First Black Grandmaster In Chess

Last month, Nas was announced as one of the headliners of this year’s Roots Picnic. He’s one of numerous talented veterans taking the stage during the festival. Fellow headliners include Lil Wayne and Andre 3000. Despite the stacked lineup, much of the discussion of the festival after the lineup dropped was about someone else. Some fans took issue with Sexyy Red’s inclusion in the festival despite her massive breakout 2023.

Last year Nas released two new albums Magic 2 and Magic 3. The projects concluded his series of collaborations with producer Hit-Boy. What do you think of Nas working with one of the producers on “Power” to make a show about the first black grandmaster in chess? Do you think you’ll watch the show when it comes out? Fans Call Out Publication For Mistaking Skepta For Wiley In Antisemitism Article

Wiley has lost his Member of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire honor amid the fallout from his past antisemitic comments. After a lengthy investigation into remarks he made in 2020, the Cabinet Office confirmed on Friday that they stripped the rapper of his award. Deadline has since come under fire for mistakenly using a picture of Skepta in its article covering the story.

“Anti-Semites like Wiley must understand that we will work tirelessly to hold them to account,” said Stephen Silverman, director of investigations for the Campaign Against Anti-Semitism, in a statement to the BBC. “For four years, we have worked to ensure that Wiley faces ruinous consequences for his unhinged anti-Semitic tirade, for which he has shown no remorse. Today’s decision is a vindication of that effort.”

While Deadline quickly deleted its post featuring Skepta for the story, many fans took note on social media. “Sigh. This is Skepta not Wiley,” one user on Twitter wrote. “One of the biggest racist tropes out there is that Black people look alike.” Check out Deadline’s error below.

Deadline Mistakes Skepta For Wiley

As for Wiley’s controversial comments, he wrote on Twitter back in 2020: “Ther are 2 sets of people who nobody has really wanted to challenge #Jewish & #KKK,” he wrote. “But being in business for 20 years you start to understand why … Red Necks Are the KKK and Jewish People are the Law…Work that out. Jewish people don’t care what black went through they just use us to make money to feed their kids… for generations as well.” In further posts, he dragged Drake into the rant. Kid Cudi Reveals His Next Acting Role Is A Dystopian Sci-Fi Horror Film

Kid Cudi is returning to acting with a new animated vehicle, Slime. The Cleveland musician is set to star in and produce the film about two individuals who set off on a quest to find a cure for the side effects of a medical trial. The film will serve as the directorial debut of Jeron Braxton, an animator best known for Baby Demon. The script is the work of Brian Ash, best known for The Boondocks.

Cudi is set to play Glenn, a lab worker kidnapped by protagonist Muna as she searches for a cure for the trial that she underwent and that Glenn was involved in. It has not been revealed at this time who will be voicing Muna. This year, Cudi won an Emmy for his work in the trippy Netflix special, Entergalatic. He also had a supporting role in the Disney+ series Crater. However, the series was controversially pulled by the streaming platform after just a few weeks.

Cudi Responds To Rich Paul’s Cleveland Comments

Elsewhere, Cudi took aim at Rich Paul in a recent tweet Paul had previously gone after Cudi for “not being embraced by the city of Cleveland“. “Ok so I just saw this and heres my thoughts: Rich Paul doesn’t know me. He doesn’t know my life. My mom lives in Cleveland and Ive been goin there on holidays and summer breaks for years. Mostly when im in Cleveland, its family time. I’m not throwin events in the city cuz its already too hot for me in the city. When im there I like the chill. Im not hangin at Cleveland clubs or in the streets or whatever the f-ck else u expect me to do. Oh I get it, was I suppose to catch a couple Browns or Cavs games? Im the most lowkey guy around. You aint suppose to see me brother. Thats number 1,” Cudi began.

However, Cudi wasn’t finished. “Number 2: I will say the city of Cleveland has embraced me over the years. So I disagree. Radio in Cleveland might not play my sh-t, but I had 20k people at Moon Man’s Landing in Cleveland last year. A success. And were doin it again too. Not only does the city embrace me, I make most people in that city and the state of Ohio proud. Everytime I record a record I mention the city. Thats all day. Everybody that listens to my music knows Im proud of where im from,” he concluded.

Erykah Badu Joins Cast Of “The Piano Lesson”

The Piano Lesson is a Pulitzer Prize-winning play by August Wilson. It is the fourth in Wilson’s The Pittsburgh Cycle, a ten-play series about the Black experience in 20th Century Pittsburgh. The series, in which each play is set in a different decade, also includes Fences. Fences was later adapted into an Oscar-nominated film.

While a TV film of The Piano Lesson was released in the 1990s, a feature film adaptation has been in the works since 2020. The play focuses on the Charles family in 1936 and more specifically, the debate over what to do about the family grand piano. The film already has Samuel L. Jackson and John David Washington attached but recent news has added another big hitter to the cast.

Jackson and Washington are both set to reprise their roles from a recent stage adaption of The Piano Lesson. However, they will be joined be in a small musical cameo by four-time Grammy winner Erykah Badu. First coming to prominence with her three-time platinum album Baduizm, Badu was a staple of the R&B scene of the 2000s. However, it has been some time since Badu has released new music. Her latest album, the mixtape But You Can’t Use My Phone, came out in 2015. Furthermore, she also revealed a single, “Tempted”, in 2019 as part of the soundtrack for The Photograph.

While Badu’s role is said to be “small”, the performer does have an impressive acting resume under her belt already. In 1999, she was nominated for a SAG award for The Cider House Rules. She has also appeared in Black Dynamite, Legends of Chamberlain Heights, and What Men Want. The Piano Lesson is set to be directed by Malcolm Washington, who co-wrote the screenplay alongside Virgil Williams. Williams is an Oscar-nominated screenwriter with credits such as Mudbound, 24, and ER. However, The Piano Lesson does not have a release window at the time of the writing.
