This year, All-Star Weekend will take place in Salt Lake City, Utah, so the teams will be coached by the Utah Jazz governor Ryan Smith, as well as minority owner — and former NBA All-Star — Dwyane Wade.
While Smith says he has no intention of playing, his team is stacked with talent — just maybe not the basketball kind. He’s got a ton of musicians on his team, including rapper Cordae, country star Kane Brown, and Latin trap singer Ozuna.
Not to be outdone on the music front, Wade’s tapped his own all-star squad of the musical variety, with 21 Savage, Janelle Monáe, and Nicky Jam all suiting up.
Of course, neither team is lacking for athletics. Albert Pujols, Calvin Johnson, DK Metcalf, and the Miz are all on rosters, along with WNBA stars like Arike Ogunbowale and Diamond DeShields. It should be a fun game all around — and really, isn’t that the point?
The All-Star Celebrity Game is scheduled for Friday, February 17 at 7 pm ET/4 pm PT. (5 Mountain Time… thanks a lot, Utah. First, you don’t have internet, now this).
Some artists covered here are Warner Music artists. Uproxx is an independent subsidiary of Warner Music Group.
Last weekend, A$AP Rocky made a triumphant return to our Fire Emoji playlist. Now, though, it’s Cordae and Anderson .Paak’s turn to show hip-hop lovers how it’s done.
Their “Two Tens” collaboration landed on streamers earlier this weekend, concurrently earning the top spot on our Spotify roundup. Aside from boasting impressive lyricism from both artists, it also found J. Cole sitting in the producer’s seat alongside Dem Jointz.
For the latest edition of the fire, braggadocious bad bitch anthem, the Alabama native worked with quickly rising star Lola Brooke, as well as Maiya The Don.
As far as solo efforts go, this weekend brought a good number. Bouba Savage’s work on “WIN A LOT” caught our ear, as did two new titles from EST Gee. Both “IF I STOP NOW” and “BLOW UP” can be found on Fire Emoji, with just one noteworthy collaboration separating them.
That joint single comes from Ray Vaughn and Ab-Soul, who previously made waves with his Herbert album. The new release, “Sandcastles” has quickly become a fan favourite for various reasons.
Amping audiences up for their forthcoming SremmLife 4 project is Rae Sremmurd. The sibling duo kept the party going this New Music Friday with “Sucka Or Sum,” which is due to appear on the long-awaited album.
Finally, we hear from KayCyy and BabyTron on their “MOTOWN” song, followed by our last selection of the week – SleazyWorld Go’s “Robbers and Villains.”
Further down, you’ll find new arrivals from names like Trippie Redd, Headie One, Ice Spice, and Gucci Mane.
Stream our weekly Fire Emoji playlist exclusively on Spotify below. Additionally, make sure to log on tomorrow to catch more must-listen releases on our R&B Season update.
Fresh off of the release of his new Anderson .Paak-assisted single, Cordae says more is to come from the dynamic duo. This week, the pair dropped “Two Tens,” an applause-worthy collaboration that hosts a production by J. Cole. Cordae and .Paak’s talents collided once before in 2019 on “RNP,” so it was only fitting that they joined forces once again.
Cordae recently spoke with Zane Lowe for Apple Music 1 about his relationship with .Paak. “You know what, it’s because this is really my friend,” the rapper said. “He’s really like, my real friend, like my brother. Other artists be like, ‘Oh, that’s my brother,’ or, ‘Oh, that’s my man.’ And saying that sh*t just to sound cool. I don’t really have too many friends, to be honest.”
“We just be kicking it, and we just be recording,” Cordae continued. “It won’t be like, ‘Yo, let’s just put this out next week.’ It’ll be like, ‘Yo, this song is a couple years old.’ You know what I’m saying? So, I’m like, man, I’m going to just hold on to this. And when the time feels right, it feels right.”
Additionally, “Two Tens” isn’t the only Cole-produced record they have on the books. In fact, there’s enough in the stash for an EP.
“You know what’s funny, we literally got a mixtape full of joints with me and .Paak,” he said. “Well, we got an EP full of joints with me, .Paak, and Cole beats.”
Elsewhere, Cordae revealed he’s been spending his time recording and perfecting his craft. He claims to have made 180 songs in the last year alone, and he’s proud of that number, regardless of how many his peers are cranking out.
“Just trying to make it better, bro. Just never being satisfied. And really, bro, it may be to a fault or a good thing, but I’m a people pleaser. So, I really want to just make good music that the fans love. I just don’t want to disappoint anybody, for real.”
In a new interview with Zane Lowe, Cordae says he has enough songs with “RNP” and “Two Tens” collaborators Anderson .Paak and J. Cole to release a full EP.
And if I may be so bold, he should release that immediately, just for me, because it would make me very happy.
Cordae appeared on the Apple Music 1 radio show to talk about the new track, “Two Tens,” and during the course of the discussion, revealed that not only has he recorded enough songs for the above-mentioned EP, but he’s also got about 17 full-length albums besides that.
“I made a lot of songs last year,” he said. “I think last year I recorded literally 180 songs. I know some artists record like a thousand songs, but it feels like that’s the most songs I recorded in the year, for sure. Last year, it was also the most touring I did, so I’m proud of myself for still recording 180 songs.”
While discussing his chemistry with .Paak, he revealed the wealth of material he’d recorded with the older artist. “We literally got a mix tape full of joints of me and .Paak on — well, we got an EP full of joints with me, .Paak, and Cole beats… It’s because this is really my friend. Other artists be like, ‘Ph that’s my brother,’ or, ‘Oh that’s my man,’ saying that sh*t just to sound cool. I don’t really have too many friends, to be honest. He’s one of my real life genuine friends.”
