Cordae and Anderson .Paak Drop New Single and Video “Summer Drop”

Cordae and Anderson .Paak Drop New Single and Video “Summer Drop”

3x GRAMMY® Award-nominated and Emmy Award-winning rapper Cordae has teamed up once again with 8x GRAMMY® Award-winner Anderson .Paak for the brand-new single, “Summer Drop,” available now via ART@WAR/Atlantic Records. Produced by 2x GRAMMY® Award-winner J. Cole, the track also features an official music video directed by Samba.

“Summer Drop” signals the upcoming release of Cordae’s highly anticipated third album, The Crossroads, set to debut later this year. This new single is the third collaboration between Cordae and Anderson .Paak, following last year’s hit “Two Tens (Feat. Anderson .Paak).” The track continues their successful partnership, blending their unique styles under J. Cole’s expert production.

Cordae And Anderson .Paak Take Us On A Ride In “Summer Drop” Music Video

Cordae and Anderson .Paak don’t get enough credit. Every song these two make together is a heater, and their latest, “Summer Drop,” is proof. We already did a rundown on the song itself, but the duo have dropped a music video to accompany it. Unsurprisingly, it is also great. Cordae and Anderson .Paak tap into the laid back vibe of the J. Cole instrumental by riding around a neighborhood with the windows down. The duo appear to be having a blast, and honestly, the energy is infectious.

Cordae is going for a very particular aesthetic on his upcoming album. “Saturday Mornings,” his last song with Lil Wayne, and “Summer Drop,” both evoke a 90s nostalgia. The way each set up is shot to evoke an old school music video, the switches to grainy black-and-white. Cordae is bringing back the rap music of his youth, but putting his own spin on it. There’s nothing kitschy or annoyingly retro about the “Summer Drop” video. It tips its cap to the summer anthems of the past while still having enough of a modern feel to connect with fans in 2024.

Cordae Evokes His 90s Childhood In New Video

A big part of why the balance works is the on screen chemistry between Cordae and Anderson .Paak. In their body language and their reference points, the duo evoke groups like De La Soul and DJ Jazzy Jeff and the Fresh Prince. Even the title of Cordae’s upcoming album, The Crossroads, evokes Bone Thugs. The rapper is clearly feeling wistful, and it manifests in his lyrics. “I saved up the whole summer, that’s how I got school clothes,” he raps. “I bought some Puma’s and some fake chains, that was fools gold.
“My n**ga, what you know about those hot summers? No air condition.”

Anderson .Paak, as always, balances out Cordae’s reserved delivery. The instantly recognizable singer drops a memorable opening verse about his success, and how his life has changed so much since he was a kid. “I’m in my other drop, from beanies to buckets. A hundred bucks in my Polo socks,” he spits. “Remember when summer dropped, we was at Unclе’s spot. Three n**gas with nothin’ to do but wrestle or slap box.” Honestly, we can’t wait to hear the rest of Cordae’s album.

Cordae & Anderson .Paak Recount Their Childhoods Before Rap Over J. Cole-Produced “Summer Drop”

Cordae is someone who has so much talent, but in that same breath does not have the most consistent full-length projects. Well, he might prove those skeptics wrong when the former YBN crew mate puts out his third studio album, The Crossroads. At the time of writing, the Maryland MC does not have a release date in mind for it, but it is coming very soon. So far, we know for sure of one song that will be on the record, and that is the stupendous “Saturday Mornings” which features Lil Wayne. Now, though, Cordae is bringing out the second sure-fire inclusion, “Summer Drop”.

This cut sees Cordae working with now-frequent collaborator Anderson .Paak, as well as J. Cole. For those hoping for a rapping performance, you are going to be let down some. He plays more of a background role, as he is credited as a producer here. However, that’s not necessarily a disappointment because Cole is one heck of an underrated producer. Him, along with Kelsey Gonzalez, lay down another soulful instrumental with constant rushes of horns and a punchy and glitchy boom bap drum pattern. Both .Paak and Cordae are getting nostalgic and personal on “Summer Drop”, recounting their respective childhoods before raking in the big bucks as rap superstars. Check out the incredible single below.

Quotable Lyrics:

I bought some Puma’s and some fake chains, that was fools gold
My n****, what you know about those hot summers? No air condition
My n****s got rare ambition, but pain and paired division (When the summer dropped)
I done lost so many homies, in summers I cherish livin’
Nobody care to listen, they suffer from their decision (When the summer dropped)

Cordae And Anderson .Paak’s Nostalgic ‘Summer Drop’ Recalls Simpler Times

Anderson .Paak and Cordae‘s third J. Cole-produced single, “Summer Drop,” is a nostalgic ode to the year’s warmer months — and the easygoing joys they brought in simpler times. The three rappers previously collaborated on “RNP” from Cordae’s debut album, The Lost Boy, while 2023’s “Two Tens” saw them reunite and tease that they had enough songs for a full EP. However, the release of “Summer Drop” brought something even more exciting with it: The announcement of Cordae’s third album, The Crossroads. While no release date was given, it’s expected to be out this year.

“Summer Drop” constitutes Cordae’s second single from the upcoming album, after he released “Saturday Mornings” in July. That song featured another older rapper, Lil Wayne, with whom he reunited after trading bars on “Sinister” from his second album, From A Bird’s Eye View. The Maryland native also tag-teamed with the late Juice WRLD on “Doomsday” from Lyrical Lemonade’s album, All Is Yellow, which dropped in January of this year. He also appeared in the video for “Doomsday 2” by his hero Eminem from the same album, creating something of a full-circle moment for him after his initial breakout with a freestyle over Eminem’s debut single “My Name Is.”

Juicy J Makes A Left Turn With Jazzy New Album “Ravenite Social Club”

Juicy J is a legend. He’s not, however, known for his versatility. He stays trippy, and has stayed trippy for most of his career. He makes hard-hitting Memphis anthems, whether he’s solo or with Three 6 Mafia. It is a feature and not a bug. That said, Juicy J threw us for a loop with his new album. Ravenite Social Club is as sophisticated and slick as its title and artwork would lead you to believe. The opening track, with its dramatic soul arrangements and sound effects, perfectly sets the stage. This is an expensive sounding album, and Juicy J is more than up to the task of matching the production behind the mic.

We start off a little bumpy with the second song, “The Higher Up’s.” The “corporate America” refrain is a genuinely bad hook, and the rest of the song isn’t good enough to overcome this formative flaw. Juicy J ventures into social commentary elsewhere on Ravenite Social Club, but it goes over much better on a song like “Don’t Go Out.” The highlights, though, tend to be the ones that blend the retro aesthetic with Juicy J’s melodic flows. “Everything All Good” and “Suicide Doors” are stone cold stunners, between the production and nimble wordplay that belies the rapper’s age. The latter is bolstered by a standout guest verse from Cordae. Ravenite Social Club could probably be a little bit shorter, but overall, it proves to be one of J’s best solo releases.

Lil Wayne Accused Of Dissing Drake On “Saturday Mornings” And Here’s Why

If there’s one thing the internet is good for, it’s overanalyzing. Rap verses that would have gone unnoticed back in the day have become sources of speculation and debate. Especially when it comes to Drake. The Toronto rapper is a master of subliminals, and as such, anybody related to him is investigated by fans to see if they throw subs back. Lil Wayne has been Drake’s mentor for a decade and a half, and yet, the Young Money rapper has fans questioning whether he dissed the 6 God on his latest song.

The song in question is “Saturday Mornings,” a soulful collab with Cordae. Lil Wayne absolutely skates on the back end of the song, with some of his best wordplay in years. Some of the bars can (and has been) interpreted as Drizzy bashing, though. “It fit me like a glove, OJ hand. I’ma need a little love from your hating a*s,” Wayne raps. “Need less yes-men and more amens. I’ma need more real prayers and less praying hands.” The reference to the OJ glove has been applied to the artwork for the Drake diss song “6:16 In LA.” The praying hands, meanwhile, is theorized to be in reference to Drake’s “6 God” logo.

Lil Wayne Uses Drake’s Last Name As A Punchline

The line that really has fans scratching their head, though, is the one that mentions Drake’s surname: Graham. “You standing on business, I’m a business man,” Lil Wayne spits. “I’ma GOAT, n**ga you a sacrificial lamb. You a Teddy bear, n**ga, a Teddy Graham.” Weezy F. Baby is calling his target sweet, plain and simple. The evidence is compelling, especially given the fact that Drake has been clowned for being sweet for most of his career. The thing is, Wayne has been nothing but supportive of Drake since day one. The two artists have collaborated multiple times, and Young Money has stood behind Drizzy in light of the Kendrick Lamar battle.

Lil Wayne even went viral for trying to defend Drake against Lamar’s “Not Like Us” diss. The rapper tried to tweak the lyrics to the song during a recent performance in Las Vegas. It didn’t really work, though, and merely led to confusion as to which side he was on. It’s worth noting that Lil Wayne is set to drop a Rick Ross collab on July 26, despite Ross being firmly anti-Drake. There’s lot to speculate about, but at the end of the day, Wayne deserves the benefit of the doubt. Him and Drake are good until one of them says otherwise.

Cordae Drops New Single “Saturday Mornings” Featuring Lil Wayne

Cordae Drops New Single "Saturday Mornings" Featuring Lil Wayne

3x GRAMMY® Award-nominated and Emmy Award-winning rapper Cordae has returned with “Saturday Mornings (Feat. Lil Wayne),” his first new single in almost a year. Released via ART@WAR/Atlantic Records, the track is produced by GRAMMY® Award-winner Boogz.

The song showcases Cordae and Lil Wayne exchanging high-level lyrical bars for over four minutes, elevating their rap game. This release follows their 2021 collaboration “Sinister (Feat. Lil Wayne)” and hints at more new music to come.

Cordae Trades Bars With Lil Wayne As Easy As ‘Saturday Mornings’ In His New Video

This past Saturday, Cordae announced his third album is on the way, and today, he followed up with its first single, the punchline-packed “Saturday Mornings.” The song finds Cordae reuniting with his rhyme hero Lil Wayne to trade bars full of wordplay over an easygoing soul sample produced by Boogz. The video, directed by APLUS, sees the two rappers doing their thing outside of an airplane hangar, interspersed with day-in-the-life footage from the recording process of Cordae’s upcoming follow-up to From A Birds Eye View.

Although it’s been two years since that album was released, Cordae has kept up a relatively steady stream of single releases, including the Anderson .Paak collaboration “Two Tens” (part of a collection of J. Cole-produced tracks between the two that could fill out an EP), the Juice WRLD collaboration “Doomsday,” which appeared on Lyrical Lemonade’s new album this year, and “Make Up Your Mind.” He also created a collaboration with tennis star Naomi Osaka — their baby daughter, Shai.

“Saturday Mornings” marks the Uproxx cover star‘s second outing with Lil Wayne, with whom he previously collaborated on From A Birds Eye View single “Sinister.”

Cordae & Lil Wayne Keep It A Buck On Stellar “Saturday Mornings”

Cordae continues to be one of hip-hop’s more underrated characters. It might have something to do with how his first couple of years in the industry went. He was originally a member of the YBN group, but since departing, it seems like that era doesn’t even exist anymore. Now, he is one of the more respectable word smiths in game, which is what Cordae further proves on “Saturday Mornings”. This is his first single since the August 2023 track, “Make Up Your Mind”. Before that was the catchy pop rap cut with Anderson .Paak, “Two Tens”. All three of the tracks have a great chance of landing on Cordae’s third studio LP, The Crossroads.

According to Genius, the North Carolina MC announced that this project is coming along nicely in a recent interview with Apple Music. However, a concrete release date is still up in the air at this point. “Saturday Mornings” features the likes of Lil Wayne, someone who he has worked with once before on a 2022 record called “Sinister”. Comparing these two side-by-side, we feel that “Saturday Mornings” might be the stronger one of the two. From the extremely soulful production to the rappers’ effortless change in tone, this song has it all. The pen game is also on point, as Cordae and Weezy have some great messages about wanting to be around authentic people in life, but also in the rap industry.

I need more real love and less fake laughs, huh

Cordae Teases “Saturday Mornings” Collab With Lil Wayne: Watch

Cordae is due. The rapper has been teasing the release of his third album The Crossroads since 2022. It feels like there’s been little traction for the project as of late, but Cordae’s latest teaser has restored our hope. The rapper dropped off a video snippet of a song called “Saturday Mornings.” The song features a verse from Lil Wayne, and is confirmed to be dropping on Wednesday, July 24. There isn’t much rapping to be heard on the snippet, but the beat definitely has us excited for the official drop.

“Saturday Mornings” is produced by BoogzDaBeast and Smoko Ono. It’s worth nothing because the beat is absolutely stellar. It’s built on a lush soul sample, which perfectly evokes the nostalgic title. The grainy aesthetic of the video teaser also plays into Cordae’s vision. There are clips of a kid turning on an old TV set with a bowl of cereal in the foreground. There’s also VHS footage of the rapper playing chess on a couch. The most exciting part of the teaser, however, is the brief glimpse we get of Weezy and Cordae together onscreen. The two rappers look like they’re having a blast.

Cordae Cites Weezy As One Of His Biggest Influences

Cordae and Lil Wayne have been mutual fans dating back to the last decade. The former was invited on Lil Wayne’s Young Money Radio back in 2020. “He’s one of the newer artists that I f*ck with, for real, for real,” the veteran rapper asserted. “He be spittin.” Cordae returned the praise, citing Wayne as one of his biggest influences. “You know how legendary you are,” Cordae stated. “I just can’t start this sh*t without telling you how much your music means to be as a human being. And how much that sh*t inspired me.” The two artists eventually linked up on the 2022 single “Sinister.”

Cordae’s personal life has taken precedent over his music in recent years. He welcomed a daughter with tennis star Naomi Osaka in July 2023, but rumors have persisted that the couple are no longer together. Regardless, Osaka praised Cordae’s parenting style. “We built a really good foundation,” she told In Style in December. “I don’t know if it’s because he’s just an easygoing guy, but I think we just respect each other’s opinions. And if we disagree on something, we talk it out.”
