Coi Leray Claims To Be The Female Version Of Lil Uzi Vert

Coi Leray is a confident artist. She has every right to be. The rapper burst onto the scene with the top 40 hit “No More Parties,” and worked her way up to a top 10 smash with “Players.” She’s had a much better career than her father, Benzino, but that doesn’t mean she’s immune to bold, Benzino-esque statements. Leray got on X (formerly Twitter) on May 7 to declare that not only was she talented, she was the female version of Lil Uzi Vert.

Leray is a fan of Uzi Vert, and evidently feels they are on the same level creatively. “I feel like I’m the female Uzi out of the rap girlies,” she tweeted. That would have been enough to turn heads, but Leray had even more to say. “Top influential, versatile and can’t figure me out,” she added. The comparison baffled users, as Leray and Uzi Vert are pretty far apart in terms of the music they make. That’s even putting it mildly. Leray is all about fun and party vibes. “Players” and “No More Parties” are summer anthems. Uzi Vert, meanwhile, has radically changed his look and his sound.

Coi Leray Claimed She Was “Influential” Like Uzi Vert

The rapper went from making Scott Pilgrim-inspired emo rap to rage music and international collabs on Pink Tape. It’s that Leray and Uzi don’t match up in 2024, it’s that they never matched up. Users weren’t shy in letting the former know this. “Why is Coi Leray disrespecting Lil Uzi Vert like that,” one user asked. Another likened Leray to Flo Rida of all people. “You have the versatility of Flo Rida when it comes to making H&M and Target music,” they wrote. “We can’t figure you out because we don’t care enough, beloved.” Brutal.

This isn’t the first time Leray and Uzi have been musically linked. Well, technically. Lil Uzi Vert teased a song snippet in July 2023 in which they mention Leray by name. “Got a skinny b***h, look just like Coi Leray,” they spit over a throwback, Luv Is Rage-type beat. Leray isn’t typically a fan of people using her name on wax, as evidenced by her beef with Latto, but she didn’t seem bothered by this one. Maybe it’s because, like she said, she finds musical kinship with the rapper.

Coi Leray Denounces Father Benzino Yet Again After He Expressed Support for R. Kelly

Coi Leray Denounces Father Benzino Yet Again After He Expressed Support for R. Kelly

Once again, Coi Leray is fed up with her dad, Benzino, and after publicly distancing herself from this guy after he supported some rally to get this, free R. Kelly from prison. Like C’mon, Benzino, you have a DAUGHTER.

So get this. TMZ reported that Benzino aligned himself by pledging himself to Kelly while he was dishing on the “We In Miami” podcast. He believes the disgraced crooner, who’s serving 20 years, should get a second chance. But it gets worse. Benzino pretty much said one of R. Kelly’s victims was just a couple of years below the legal limit. Yes. Seriously, he (Kelly) had consent from her parents.

Just last week, R. Kelly’s 20-year conviction for sex crimes was upheld in court, so he isn’t going anywhere, but his position on that matter motivated Coi to separate herself again from her controversial father publicly.

Coi took to X to let it all be known, “I want everybody to know I want nothing to do with anything my father has going on.” Coi then lets the world know she has not been in contact with Benzino for over a year and adds she has no respect for how Benzino’s antics—that part. Well, I have much respect for Coi for standing on business and not sticking to her principles. As for Benzino. Sheesh.

Coi Leray Disowns Her Father Benzino After Shocking R Kelly Comments

Benzino knows how to drum up controversy. The former editor of The Source Magazine has made a career out of it. Few people would know he was a rapper were it not for his highly-publicized beef with Eminem during the 2000s. Unfortunately, Benzino’s knack for making bold statements has come back to bite him. He recently went on the We In Miami podcast, where he declared that R Kelly should be given a second chance despite his heinous crimes. This proved to be the last straw for Benzino’s daughter, Coi Leray, who publicly denounced their relationship.

Leray posted an X (formerly Twitter) thread on May 1 to clarify her stance on Benzino’s comments. She did not mention R. Kelly by name, but it was obvious she did not agree with her father. “I want everybody to know I want nothing to do with anything my father has going on,” she wrote. “I haven’t spoken to him in over a year and I don’t condone or respect any of them interviews he got going on.” The rapper went on to explain that she does even want to be associated with Benzino in the future. “I don’t respect his decisions,” she added. “I want nothing to do with him please don’t even think of me when you see him.”

Coi Leray

Coi Leray doubled down on her feelings towards her father in a second tweet. “Sharing the same DNA and blood doesn’t make us family,” she noted. “Loyalty, boundaries, respect, teaching, guidance, love, patience, encouragement makes us family… Keep me away from people who try to ‘get their lick back’ please.” The rapper then told followers that she looks forward to having a child of her own so that she could put what she’s learned into practice. “I can’t wait to have a kid one day,” she concluded. “I can’t wait to look her/him in the eye and tell them how much I love them.”

As sad as this exchange is, Benzino and Coi Leray’s estrangement is not surprising. The father and daughter have gone through a very public cycle of beefing and then making up over the years. Leray criticized Benzino for harassing her mother back in 2022, and went against her father when he tried to revive his beef with Eminem the same year. “Let’s build bridges and get over them before you burn the bridge and burn with it,” she said at the time. Unfortunately, the time for building bridges with Benzino seems to have come to an end.

Coi Leray Resolved Nicki Minaj Beef In Private, She Claims

Coi Leray and Nicki Minaj are former collaborators who, at one point in their careers, experienced a little bit of tension. Moreover, fans brought up this alleged history again when the former started to speak on the allegedly fabricated nature of female rap beefs pushed by record labels. “Most of these female rappers not even from the same places !!!! Not from the same hoods….why are we beefing?” she wrote on Twitter. “Most of them like you, do it to get Nicki minaj support and then when she turns on you.. you don’t have any support from any fan base,” a user replied.

“Yall so stupid,” Coi Leray claimed concerning the alleged Nicki Minaj beef. “Me and Nicki spoke behind the scenes, personally, and I never brought that to the public. Business ain’t work out, that’s okay. I still wish her nothing but the best and blick blick is one of the greatest videos that will be in history.” In the comments section of the post below, you will see fans claim that tensions between them rose when Nicki released “We Go Up” with Fivio Foreign, which Coi allegedly thought was an attempt to sabotage her after releasing their collaboration, “Blick Blick.”

Of course, the nature of this is pretty muddy and speculative, and it became corny to tie every little thing in femcee beef back to Nicki Minaj a long time ago. Also, the alleged issues with Coi Leray, or rather vice versa, weren’t really super well-documented or backed up by any significant evidence or even supposed shade. The closest confirmation that we got to anything concrete was Nicki’s confirmation that she almost canceled the collab when Benzino, Coi’s father, spoiled it early. But they cleared out all their issues privately, and it left fans with some more questions.

Meanwhile, the “Can’t Come Back” creative will likely continue to draw these connections in the femcee world. She’s been very outspoken on how she’s fallen victim to these alleged label games and how she wants to promote more female unity moving forward. Maybe Coi Leray and Nicki Minaj will collaborate again sometime in the future, and expand their list of team-ups with other female rappers. Only time will tell, but we can all agree on shedding past mistakes to foster more important goals.

Coi Leray Puts In A Hard Day’s Work In Her Steamy ‘Can’t Come Back’ Video

Coi Leray keeps working — and works out — in the new video for “Can’t Come Back,” her second single of 2024. The video finds the New Jersey rapper in a penthouse gym, lifting weights and showing off her dance moves in front of some impressive floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking an awesome view of the city outside. Half Flashdance, half workout video, the visual continues Coi’s campaign to follow up her 2023 self-titled album. “Can’t Come Back” follows “Wanna Come Thru” as Coi’s second single of 2024.

By now, the former Uproxx cover star‘s work ethic should be indisputable. Shortly after dropping Coi, the second-generation rapper released an EP, Blue Moon, along with videos for standout tracks “Isabel Mirant” and “Playboy,” teamed up with Busta Rhymes for the single “Luxury Life,” and contributed to G-Eazy’s comeback single “Femme Fatale” alongside Kaliii.

She’s also one of four artists billed to join Jhené Aiko on her upcoming tour, The Magic Hour. Both Aiko and Coi were recently on the lineup for Coachella 2024, where Coi debuted a few new tracks during her set. Whether they’ll appear on a new album this year remains to be seen, but she has certainly shown a propensity toward productivity, so it’s almost certain she’ll be putting something out sooner or later. For now, you can watch the video for “Can’t Come Back” above.

Coi Leray Is Done Playing Games On “Can’t Come Back”

Coi Leray gets a lot of hate overall in the music industry. Many feel she does not deserve to be a star, or they feel she just lacks talent. However, she has still become a popular figure in hip-hop and R&B regardless. “Baby Don’t Hurt Me,” “Players,” and “Self Love,” have all become massive tracks for Coi Leray and “Can’t Come Back” can hopefully be another one for her.

The Boston, Massachusetts rapper and singer hinted at this song dropping yesterday with sudsy thirst trap on Instagram. “No filter. New music @ midnight 🎵,” she wrote to her followers. “Can’t Come Back” sees Coi take on a more subdued delivery as she sings with resentment. That hatred stems from past love interests wasting her time.
