How HBCU Bands Create A Homecoming Soundtrack That Brings Generations Together

Bands at HBCU Homecomings are a cornerstone of the celebration, embodying the spirit, culture, and tradition of these institutions. Known for their high-energy performances, intricate choreography, and powerful music, HBCU bands play a vital role in creating an electric atmosphere that unites alumni, students, and the community. They do more than just perform; they tell the story of the school’s history and pride through every beat, step, and melody. These bands are a source of inspiration, showcasing the rich heritage and artistic excellence of HBCUs, making Homecomings an unforgettable experience that goes beyond just a football game.

There are always different experiences at Homecoming when you ask the “bandheads”, those students that were in the band and love nothing as much as band performances. Jabari Johnson, a former member of the Mighty Marching Hornet Band of Alabama State and certified “bandhead”, says the approach to Homecoming from the band’s perspective is about celebrating across generations. “It’s dependent on how the different Student Government Associations would like to incorporate their festivities, along with the time constraints the bands have now. The mentality of the band at Homecoming is not as aggressive as ‘Classic’ games due to tradition.”

HBCU Classic football games are special matchups between historically Black colleges and universities, often featuring long-standing rivalries and celebrated traditions – like Grambling vs. Southern in the Bayou Classic. They typically are held at neutral site venues and are large events in their own right, but have a different vibe than Homecoming. For Homecoming, there are a great number of people you have to account for, and to a degree appease, because of the number of people that come back to celebrate and the personal nature of what Homecoming represents. Johnson went on to add from his experiences as a member that most bands, including his, would “pay homage to the ‘old school’ within the show, possibly [with] an Alumni Band, spell the University’s name, a ‘special guest’ performance, or old school dance routine, and then get back to battling in the stands.”

Just like HBCUs in general, each band comes in different shapes, sizes, and styles. While the focus is often on the big-name bands like the Human Jukebox at Southern or the Marching 100 at Florida A&M, the band still shows out at Homecoming for smaller institutions too. I recently spoke with Torre C. Goodson, Interim Director of Bands at Clark-Atlanta University, about the “Mighty Marching Panthers” perspective during such a festive and important time for HBCUs. When asked about the mentality and approach of the band at Homecoming considering what it represents to HBCU students and alums, Goodson spoke to that same unique balance of the past and present at Homecoming as Johnson.

“Football Homecoming is a cornerstone of the HBCU experience; our primary mentality is that we have a legacy to honor, enhance, and elevate. There’s a two-pronged approach to our contribution to the Homecoming experience: enhancing the current students’ collegiate experience and providing the alumni with an opportunity to reminisce on an integral part of their life. We make it a point to prepare music that is relevant to the current atmosphere and culture as well as providing consistency for the returning alum. It’s a very busy week for the band in general: there are on campus events to perform for, alumni take the time to come back and engage with the current students, and it provides us with an opportunity to reflect on the legacy of those that came before us.”

There is also a concerted effort to bridge the gap with that engagement musically. As Johnson noted, there’s an “old school” element to Homecoming shows, but the bands will also mix in hits from today. Hugh Douglas spoke with us for our previous piece about how the football team loves hearing the latest songs from the band while playing and how that impacted his play. I guarantee you this year because of the popularity, Kendrick Lamar’s hit song “Not Like Us” will be blaring through instruments all Homecoming season

Whether at the biggest programs or smaller Historically Black Colleges and Universities, Director Goodson’s perspective reminds us how the bands play a central role in the Homecoming experience, embodying the spirit and pride of their institutions. Though these schools may not have the vast resources of larger universities, their bands are no less passionate or impressive. These ensembles pour heart and soul into their performances, delivering electrifying halftime shows that blend traditional marching band precision with vibrant, contemporary music. Their performances are a source of pride for the entire community, uniting alumni, students, and local supporters in a celebration of culture, history, and school spirit.

The bands at these smaller HBCUs often become the highlight of Homecoming, showcasing their talent and creativity in a way that resonates deeply with everyone in attendance. However, there is a pressure that comes along with the expectation to be one of the most memorable parts of the Homecoming experience, and Director Goodson spoke to how they try to embrace that pressure.

“There is definitely an extra pressure to perform. Homecoming is a time where the alumni-people who have done this before and given their blood sweat and tears to do so and are able to observe and revel in their collegiate experience. As a bandsman, there is tremendous pressure to not let the alumni down. These are people that come and give back to the program and the University, and you always want your stakeholders to feel pride and see the return on their investment. But when it comes to the Mighty Marching Panthers, we stay ready so we don’t have to get ready. The pressure is palpable, but it’s not anything we aren’t prepared for.”

HBCU bands at Homecoming are more than just musical ensembles; they are a vital cultural force that brings together generations of alumni, students, and communities in celebration of tradition, pride, and excellence. Their electrifying performances, marked by precision, creativity, and energy, elevate the Homecoming experience beyond a football game, turning it into a dynamic display of artistry and unity. From the pulsating rhythms of the drumline to the high-stepping majorettes, HBCU bands embody the spirit of their schools, carrying forward a legacy of empowerment, resilience, and joy. Their presence at Homecoming showcases the rich cultural heritage of historically Black colleges and universities, creating memories that resonate for a lifetime.

Janet Jackson Remembers When Her Pants Split In The ‘Booty Crack’ While Performing For The Queen Of England

Janet Jackson is one of the most esteemed performers in music history. Given just how often she’s taken the stage at this point in her career, though, it makes sense that she’s dealt with at least a handful of issues during a performance. One such instance arrived with terrible timing: Jackson once had a wardrobe malfunction while performing for the Queen of England.

In a British Vogue video shared yesterday (September 12), Jackson talks about some of her most iconic fashion choices from over the years. When she get to one look, she explained:

“Funny story about this outfit: I was performing for the Queen of England, and we were doing Rhythm Nation. Sure enough, as soon as I squatted, my pants split right in my booty crack. I couldn’t believe it happened. I thought, ‘Oh my god.’ And then I started feeling air back there, so I knew it had really happened [laughs]. And the whole time, it was fine until, no, you’re going to perform for the Queen of England. So I never turned my back to her, which, some of the choreography, I was supposed to. I just faced forward.”

Beyond that, the video offers a fun look at Jackson’s career through the lens of her clothes, so check it out above.

Jay Worthy & MadeInTYO Release First Joint Album, “Time After Time”

Rapper Jay Worthy and singer MadeInTYO came together to release a new joint album. Time After Time is their first collaborative effort. It comes as Jay Worthy’s third album of 2024, and MadeInTYO’s second. The album is in line with the music Worthy typically makes, with sparse, vibe-heavy production. For those who are only familiar with MadeInTYO for his viral track “Uber Everywhere,” it may be a surprise to hear him rap over production like this. However, he has embraced the sound in recent years and has found a pocket that works for him. The two have some real chemistry on this album, and keep it just brief enough for fans to want to hear another release from the two in the future.

As far as the content of the album is concerned, Jay Worthy and MadeinTYO find themselves waxing poetic about street life, boasting about their success, and showing appreciation for their lives. The album works in contrast to Worthy’s previous release Magic Hour, an out-and-out G-Funk album. However, it is not dissimilar to other music in his discography, particularly his releases with Sean House as part of LNDN DRGS. MadeInTYO’s TYO 808, an album he produced himself and released earlier this year, leaned closer to the sound of their joint release. A spacy, woozy, almost cloud rap-like approach. Worthy is a prolific artist, and this is the latest in what has been a highly successful year for the Canadian rapper. If you listen to this and want to hear more MadeinTYO production, we’d recommend Ransom’s SMOKE & MIRRORS EP. Stream this new release now.

Tony Yayo Tells DJ Vlad Why 50 Cent Hates Him

It goes without saying that 50 Cent has his fair share of foes in the entertainment industry. According to Tony Yayo, DJ Vlad is one of them. During a recent interview, Yayo shut the internet personality down after he asked a question about 50 Cent’s shooting. He also took the opportunity to reveal that questions like that are the reason Fif hates him.

“This is why 50 hates your a**,” Yayo said, leaving DJ Vlad in a state of disbelief. “Yeah, you talk about him too much.” The G-Unit rapper went on to clarify, explaining that he doesn’t want all of his interview questions to revolve around 50 Cent. While he emphasized the fact that they’re close friends, he also stressed that he has plenty of his own accomplishments to discuss.

Tony Yayo Says DJ Vlad Talks About 50 Cent Too Much

“I don’t want to talk about Fif cuz I don’t want to make it seem like all my views is about Fif. Fif is my man, so sometimes when a n***a do so much favors for you, you always remember the time when he said yes never when he said no,” he described. “He don’t hate you, but I know sometimes he just don’t want to be brought up.”

Yayo also added that 50 Cent doesn’t hesitate to respond to those who talk about him online. This is accurate, as evidenced by his recent spat with Hurricane Chris. The Shreveport performer called Fif out for spending $500K on security for Humor & Harmony Weekend. He also took issue with the lineup, which he thought could have featured more local acts. Fif shadily fired back with a clip of Hurricane Chris pointing out that Louisiana has the “fourth worst edunacational system in America.” What do you think of Tony Yayo telling DJ Vlad that 50 Cent hates him? Are you surprised by this or not? Share your thoughts in the comments section down below and keep an eye on HNHH for more updates.

Lil Wayne Draws Fans’ Sympathy And Apathy Over His Super Bowl Snub Response

Lil Wayne found himself at the center of controversy after Kendrick Lamar announced that he will headline Super Bowl LIX’s halftime show in New Orleans, Louisiana on February 9, 2025. Many folks felt like the Young Money boss deserved the spot instead, a conversation amplified by K.Dot’s beef with Tunechi’s Toronto protégé, Drake. While there are many different angles and perspectives to discuss and debate, the most important one to consider is Wayne’s own feelings. Now, we have a good idea of what those are thanks to a heartfelt video response that landed on social media in the wee hours of Friday (September 13).

That hurt,” Lil Wayne said of not being selected for Super Bowl LIX’s halftime show. “Hurt a lot. You know what I’m talking about? It hurt a whole lot. I blame myself for not being mentally prepared for a let-down. And for just automatically mentally putting myself in that position like somebody had told me that was my position. So I blame myself for that. But I thought that there was nothing better than that spot and that stage and that platform in my city. So it hurt, it hurt a whole lot.

Lil Wayne’s Response To Missing Out On Super Bowl Halftime Show In New Orleans

“But y’all… Y’all are f***ing amazing,” Lil Wayne continued. “It made me feel like s**t not getting this opportunity. And when I felt like s**t, you guys reminded me that I ain’t s**t without y’all. And that’s an amazing reality. So, like I said, it broke me. And I’m just trying to put me back together. But, my God, have you all helped me. Thanks to all my peers, my friends, my family, my homies on sports television and everybody repping me. I really appreciate that, I really do. I feel like I let all of y’all down by not getting that opportunity. But I’m working on me and I’m working. Thank you.” Check out reactions to Weezy’s message down below.

Fans React

Elsewhere, many in the industry have their theories as to why this all happened. Some think that there’s not much to really talk about here, and that fans are exaggerating their indignant reactions. Others like Joe Budden, however, think that there’s something murkier going on behind the scenes. We’ll see if any concrete information emerges about this whole debacle…

Joey Bada$$ & Chloe Have Questions About Love On “TELL ME”

Joey Bada$$ has been a busy guy as of late, but not really in terms of his solo music career. He was on set quite a bit for 50 Cent’s Power franchise. Additionally, he’s been lending his talents to other artists work as far as features go. In the last year he’s been working alongside names such as Rome Streetz, Erick the Architect, Conway the Machine, IDK, and more. That all changes today, though, because Joey Bada$$ is back with “TELL ME”. It follows up on two previous solo releases which are “Fallin’” and “Passports & Suitcases” featuring KayCyy.

Both further develop Joey’s sensual/R&B side, something he’s been honing for the last couple of years. He’s got some real hits when he goes in this direction sonically and lyrically, and “TELL ME” could be the next one to do so. This time around, the New Yorker is working with another new collaborator Chloe Bailey, the sister of Halle Bailey. They have some great chemistry over the pounding lowkey beat, and show it by adlibbing for each other, splitting a verse, and singing the chorus together. Throughout the cut, both are asking their respective partners what kind of situation they’re in romantically. It’s a theme that is sure to resonate with all of the hopeless romantics out there and we are vibing with it as well. Hear why below.

Princess Love Blasts Ray J For Roping Their Kids Into Domestic Altercation

Following news of their divorce earlier this year, it seems like things are still very complicated and contentious between Ray J and Princess Love. Moreover, this is around the fourth time that they’ve announced their split. While they can still keep things pretty amicable for the most part, it seems like a recent incident threatens that. For those unaware, the singer went on Instagram Live to record a conversation with their young children, seemingly trying to explain a fight that the couple had. Love took to her Instagram page to respond on her Story, warning him that things could turn even uglier.

“This is the only time I’m going to address this,” Princess Love’s message to Ray J began on Friday (September 13) began. “I’ve been trying my best to be the bigger person and just walk away peacefully. But what you’re not going to do is traumatize, manipulate, and gaslight my kids when you can’t do it to me anymore. I’ll save my videos for the judge…” Many fans expressed concern over the video based on how Ray seemingly tried to gloss over an altercation.

Princess Love Responds To Ray J

“I just want to make sure, are you good?” Ray J seemingly asked his four-year-old son Epik in the video. “Dada never did nothing to nobody. Mama never did nothing to me, dada never did nothing to mama, right? Everything is safe? Have dada put hand on mama or mama put hands on dada? No, right? Okay, so there’s no reason to call the police, right? We just making a movie. We’re just playing. Okay?” Then, he seemingly let his son know that they could go to his house once “everything is safe here with Melody and everybody. But nothing crazy has happened. I got it all on tape.”

“That’s my brother,” Ray J’s six-year-old daughter Melody seemed to cry out in the clip. “Everything is okay,” he responded, assuring them that their parents still love each other. “It was just pretend, okay baby? I want Epik to just tell mama that he’s going with me so mama knows what’s going on.” The Mississippi native pleaded with his kids to apologize to Princess Love on his behalf.

Eminem & 2 Chainz Are Hip-Hop’s “Kyrie & Luka” On New Expanded Edition Cut

Eminem has delivered the Expanded Mourner’s Editon of his newest record The Death of Slim Shady with four new songs. Right after the emotional closing cut “Somebody Save Me”, it leads into a Steve Berman skit which essentially says that Slim Shady will always be around in some capacity. After that, fans will be treated to a remix of “Fuel” with Shady signees WESTSIDE BOOGIE and GRIP. Next is “Like My S***” and then, Eminem wraps things up with “Kyrie & Luka”. This cut features another previous collaborator in 2 Chainz, albeit a one-timer.

Prior to this, we heard them together on the remix of “Chloraseptic” that also featured PHresher. Sort of like the title suggests, “Kyrie & Luka” is essentially a track that displays how lethal of a one-two punch they are in hip-hop. They don’t trade bars, but they do both go on lengthy verses, just like how Irving and Doncic can go on extensive scoring runs on the basketball court. Also involved with this track is the legendary DJ Premier, and this is his first-ever full beat he’s made for Eminem. This track also plays into the “Kyrie & Luka” theme with the instrumental. For Tity Boi, he rides an interpolation of Eric B. & Rakim’s “Move the Crowd”. As for Em, he tackles more of traditional trap-like backdrop. Check out the track with the link below.
