10 years ago, Freddie Gibbs and Madlib teamed up for the release of their pivotal joint album Piñata, a project that changed the trajectory of Gibbs’ career and returned Madlib to the mainstream rap spotlight. Since its release, Gibbs has gone on a truly breathtaking run culminating in the release of his first major-label album, while Madlib has been a hotly demanded producer by seemingly everyone from Mac Miller to Talib Kweli to Pusha T. And, of course, “MadGibbs” teamed up once again for the Piñata sequel Bandana, proving the prior album’s success was no fluke.
Now, to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the game-changing album, Gibbs and ‘Lib have announced a minor tour to celebrate. They’ll hit three cities — Boston, Chicago, and New York — in May, backed by El Michels Affair, the hip-hop band that most recently collaborated with Black Thought on his Glorious Game LP and played backing music for Gibbs and Madlib’s NPR Music Tiny Desk Concert. Last year, JT and Yung Miami released their newest album RAW. The album features appearances from Lil Durk, Muni Long, Juicy J, Usher, and Kim Petras. Despite those impressive features, the record underperformed commercially. Fans online compared its performance to the duo’s previous effort City On Lock and looked for reason why it wasn’t translating. One fan theory is that maybe the pair are better off as solo artists, something they’ve mused on before.
JT has been teasing towards a substantial solo release since months before the release of RAW. It started when she dropped her debut solo single “No Bars.” The song received some positive buzz from both fans and critics and is among the most streamed tracks on RAW. Before the album even released she claimed that she was still hungry, a statement that many fans assumed meant there was a solo project on the way. She’s made some moves and some statements in 2024 that have fans even more confident she will be dropping something soon.
At the beginning of the month, JT made a vow for 2024. She took to social media to express her goal to release not just good verses, but entire good songs. It seems like yet another indication that this year will be the one where she becomes a full-on solo artist. She followed it up a few days later with a snippet of new music that saw her going in an entirely new direction.
Now she’s sharing previews of even more new music. This time, she’s doing karaoke to her own songs giving fans a preview of both the tracks and her potential live performances of them. Meek Mill has responded to the backlash he’s been receiving over his recent question about music listening in Africa. Taking to Twitter on Saturday, Meek asked how his fans in South Africa and Nigeria consume his music. Many users didn’t appreciate the way they perceived his tone to be condescending and took offense. In response, Meek says he was asking an innocent question.
“Do a lot of people play my music in South Africa? I remember having on big show [there a] few years back… how do y’all listen to our music in South Africa???? On what platform or in Nigeria?” Meek wrote.

After many fans took issue with the post, he clarified on Monday: “I was asking how they listen to music in Africa because I wanna handle my business none of my contracts say they have rights to distribute me in Africa… basically looking for the money trail? Despite everything they’ve been through, Chrisean Rock is still staunchly supporting her baby daddy Blueface amid his prison stint. However, his mother still doesn’t think that she actually has his or the family’s best interests at heart. Moreover, Karlissa Saffold took to Instagram Live over the weekend to blast the former Baddies star for allegedly wishing death on her. As you can probably tell, these two have almost always been at odds over who treats the rapper right and who’s to blame for all the antics they’re involved in. She said all that bad stuff about Cali’s baby being on the ventilator. She said all that stuff, she still ain’t learned. I don’t want no parts of it, I let y’all convince me and talk me into even dealing with that again, and I should not have listened to y’all. Detroit has been the birthplace of some of the most special talents in hip-hop history. It may not get the same shine as places like Los Angeles, Chicago, and Atlanta, but it deserves to be right up there with them. One of the reasons why is due largely in part to the former rap posse D12. Formed in 1996 by maybe the best to ever do it, Eminem, is no more. The Real Slim Shady talked about it on his surprise 2018 record Kamikaze. He addressed the fallout with his members such as Bizarre, Bugz, Proof, and the rest of the gang.
Bizarre is someone who is still going strong all these years later. Spitting aggressively since 1998, he is continuing his career with an upcoming album. It appears it will be released under Shady Records as opposed to some of his other affiliations such as Redhead. To help promote Ratt Poison, Bizarre is bringing a gritty street banger called “Uncle.”
This will be continuing a very active streak for Bizarre that started in late February of last year. He went on to drop three projects in 2023. Those were 18159 Stout, Drugged Emotions Unleashed, and HGG2. The latter of the two were collaborations with Freder Seric and Foul Mouth. Be sure to tap in when the album drops. Since he was known as Mos Def of Black Star, the rapper has used his unique blend of intelligence, wit, and social consciousness to craft songs that transcend time and trends. As a result of his impact and immense talent, he is often cited as one of the greatest, yet underrated rappers of all time.
For some days now, Yasiin Bey has been trending since he claimed Drake’s music is more pop than rap. Following his statement, the rapper has faced backlash from Drizzy, as well as from his fans. In the same vein, Bey has also been supported by another sect of listeners. Regardless of their current beef, both emcees are Hip Hop heavyweights, albeit from different eras. Yasiin Bey has been making music for over three decades now. Many Hip Hop heads would call him a rapper’s rapper, and admittedly, he has some very influential songs in his catalog. Here’s a list of some of the best ones in his solo discography.
Released on September 24, 2002, “Brown Sugar” is a part of the soundtrack for the rom-com film, Brown Sugar. The song is soulful, masterfully produced by Kanye West, and features expertly executed rap bars from Yasiin Bey. In addition, in usual Kanye fashion, he samples the song “Invitation” by Norman Connors. Not only is this track a masterpiece in terms of rap performance, but also in terms of production. Both Yasiin Bey and Kanye West exhibited amazing chemistry on what is unarguably one of Bey’s most unforgettable tracks.
6. “Hip Hop” (1999)
Appearing on his debut solo album, Black On Both Sides (1999), “Hip Hop” is a raw, gritty, and thought-provoking song. Besides its impressive production, the lyrics of “Hip Hop” are a poignant commentary on the commercialization and commodification of Hip Hop. Furthermore, Yasiin Bey’s delivery is passionate and energetic, perfectly complementing the rebellious tone of the song. “Hip Hop” is conscious rap at its peak. It is one of the standout tracks in a stellar catalog that Yasiin Bey should always be proud of.
“Oh No,” released on November 28, 2000, is a part of the Lyricist Lounge 2 compilation album. While it is known for its infectious and groovy production, the song is also a masterclass in songwriting. Emphatically, the verses on the song display the lyrical prowess of the performers as they flawlessly ride the beat. Additionally, this track has been a perfect example to subsequent generations of rappers of what a successful collaboration between rappers should sound like. Not only is it a collaboration with legendary Hip Hop producer Madlib, but it also features a sick verse from Slick Rick. The beat features a blend of jazz, soul, and psychedelic elements, creating a captivating backdrop for Bey’s lyricism. Each verse is a poetic exploration, and the rappers’ delivery is both introspective and socially conscious. Since its release, “Auditorium” has received widespread acclaim from fans, which comes as no surprise, considering its excellence. As far as Yasiin Bey tracks go, this is undoubtedly one of the rapper’s most influential.
1. “Ms. Fat Booty” (1999)
Arguably the most quintessential of Yasiin Bey tracks, “Ms. Fat Booty” was released as the lead single from his debut album. The song is celebrated for its storytelling, clever lyrics, and memorable production. It is also notable for its iconic sampling of Aretha Franklin’s “One Step Ahead.” Interestingly, that exact same sample was used in JID’s recent viral hit, “Surround Sound.” “Ms. Fat Booty” remains a defining track in the rapper’s discography. Additionally, it is often cited as one of the greatest Hip Hop songs of its era. Its massive cultural impact makes it arguably Yasiin Bey’s most influential track.
Last month, Kodak Black was arrested by police and hit with a few charges, including for drug possession. Though he pretty quickly pleaded not guilty to the accusations he’s been held in jail ever since for violating his probation. Police claim that Kodak was discovered with white powder around his mouth which he tried to hide from police. The charges filed against him claim that the substance was cocaine but his lawyers have denied that right out of the gate. His attorney denied that the substance was cocaine, claiming instead that it was Percocet.
Since the arrest, Kodak Black’s lawyers have been fighting to get him free. One of their first attempts was to get him released into a drug rehab program. Despite his clear struggle with substances, the judge denied that request. In the reasoning given, the judge described Kodak as a “danger to the community” as a justification for not releasing him. The news kept getting even worse for Kodak in the weeks that followed. News broke that he could end up being forced to serve a previously pardoned jail sentence. He famously had a sentence commuted by Donald Trump a few years ago but may end up having to serve that time anyway. Check out the latest developments in the story below.
Now in their newest legal move, Kodak’s lawyers are once again calling for his drug charges to be dropped. According to TMZ, in newly filed legal documents they claim that new tests have confirmed exactly what they said about the powder found on Kodak. Reportedly, his defense has evidence that it was in fact Oxycodone which he also reportedly has a prescription for.
The judge hasn’t made a ruling on the filing yet. The call will seemingly be determined by how strong the evidence presented by the rapper’s defense actually is.
