YNW Melly seemed to steer clear of death penalty charges, but fate dangles as a possibility. Previously, it appeared that he would avoid such a conviction, but a recent ruling by a judge has opened the door to a potential death sentence. The judge ruled in favor of the state, stating that a death sentence […]
Reports have confirmed that a judge in South Florida is going to allow jurors in YNW Melly’s trial to recommend a death sentence with an 8-4 vote instead of a unanimous vote.
Broward Circuit Judge John Murphy is allowing the jurors to decide if Melly, who is facing two counts of first-degree murder, should face the death penalty or serve the rest of his life behind bars without the possibility of parole.
YNW Melly, whose real name is Jamell Demons, will be going on trial for the murders of his deceased crew members Chris Thomas, 20, aka YNW Juvy, and Anthony Williams, 21, aka YNW Sakchaser back in 2018.
Judge Murphy said his decision, “was not fundamentally unfair for [Melly]… nor would it violate his right to due process of the law.”
Melly’s trial is set to begin later this month ad he will be one of the first people to be tried under this new law allowing jurors to vote o a defendant’s life or death.
Melly has plead not guilty and currently sits behind bars with no bond.
The long-awaited trial for YNW Melly’s murder case is finally due to kick off later this month. Unfortunately, the Florida native received some bad news ahead of that regarding the death penalty. It was previously taken off the table for Melly, but ultimately later put back on after the ruling was found to be faulty. Since then, the 23-year-old has continued to campaign for his freedom with the help of attorneys, family, friends, and fans.
Even from behind bars Melly has managed to get messages out via Instagram. In one from earlier this year, the “Murder On My Mind” artist shared that he’s “in fear of [his] life” behind bars while awaiting his fate. YNW has allegedly dealt with harsh deputies, lieutenants, and sergeants, all of whom he says are threatening to “hide [him] from the world.” The original posts are no longer on his profile, leaving only more recent snapshots of the embattled star smiling while wearing a suit in court.
As XXL reports, on Friday (June 2) Broward Circuit Judge John Murphy agreed with state prosecutors who filed a motion following a new statute allowing jury members to recommend a death sentence with an 8-4 vote. Before this, all 12 jurors would have to vote for the fatal penalty. Melly will officially be one of the first tried under the harsh new rule following Parkland High School shooter Nikolas Cruz’s recent denial due to a 9-3 vote from the jury.
Of all the states where it’s still legal, Florida now has the lowest threshold for handing out a death sentence in the country. YNW Melly Shares New Photos
Unfortunately, things haven’t necessarily been smooth for the rapper. In December, the rapper claimed that he fears his life is at risk due to the treatment he faced. “They are watching my every move on camera. Making sure I don’t use the phone to tell the world how I am being mistreated, discriminated, threatened physically, harassed,” he said. “I have been threatened by Deputies, Lieutenants and Sergeants. They say ‘they will hide me from the world’ and threaten to ‘beat my ass every day.’ If I tell my lawyers they will lie and say I hit them first.”

YNW Melly’s behind bars and prosecutors have tried to do everything to secure a conviction, including an attempt to get Fredo Bang to testify. Prosecutors asked the Baton Rouge rapper to make a statement but Bang invoked his Fifth Amendment right. This initially came to light during a VladTV interview with Mo Gangat. The attorney explained the loophole that Bang and his attorney used to avoid questioning.
Bang apparently invoked his attorney-client privilege but he had to fight to use it, Gangat explained. The famed attorney said Bang told prosecutors that he would have to disclose advice from his lawyer during questioning. Though prosecutors offered him immunity, Bang’s lawyer told the judge that this wouldn’t apply outside of Miramar. Ultimately, the judge ruled in Bang’s favor to use his Fifth Amendment right.
Fredo Bang didn’t dive into detail during his recent VladTV interview. However, he provided a bit of context to Gangat’s analysis. He said he needed his lawyer to “defuse the situation,” even if he didn’t understand how he got roped into the investigation.
“I had to get my lawyer and defuse whatever they thinking or something,” he said. Still, Fredo Bang feels as though he might continue to face pressure from authorities in the future. He explained that he anticipates it won’t end until Melly’s case ends.
“They probably going to keep bothering me because, at the end of the day, it’s still active. It’s still in trial, so they want to push and squeeze anybody they can who they think got something going on or think could be involved to where they can get some information,” he continued. “Being that we friends, I expect them to bother me.”
Authorities charged YNW Melly and his co-defendant YNW Bortlen with two counts of first-degree murder for the deaths of Christopher “Juvy” Thomas Jr. and Anthony “Sak” Williams.

YNW Melly spent yet another holiday season behind bars as he awaits his murder trial but his family’s making sure that he’s in good spirits.
Jamie King, YNW Melly’s mother, took to Instagram where she shared a photo of a letter Melly sent her recently. King and her family paid a visit to Broward County Jail in Fort Lauderdale, Florida to wish Melly a merry Christmas. However, they weren’t able to visit him inside the facility. Instead, they held signs outside in hopes that Melly would see their message.
In the letter, Melly expressed his utmost appreciation for King, his grandma, and B-Slime for showing up for him.
“Damn, y’all made my night, my whole month. So glad I seen y’all, I hope you see me. I know y’all did right when you went screaming ‘I SEE HIM,’ they made you leave,” YNW Melly wrote. “Lit da whole jail up. Even tho they tried to make it da worst, still you found a way to make it the BEST.”
“I will always be here to make your darkest nights bright even if I have to bring the light to you son I love you [YNW Melly] so much my 1st born,” she wrote.
While YNW Melly appears to be in good spirits, he expressed concerns about jail conditions last month. In a series of statements, Melly explained how he feared for his life due to the treatment he faced from jail officials.
“I am being subjected to cruel and unusual treatment at the hands of deputies and high-ranking staff of the Broward Sheriff’s Office,” he said. “I have been threatened by Deputies, Lieutenants and Sergeants. They say ‘they will hide me from the world’ and threaten to ‘beat my ass every day.’ If I tell my lawyers they will lie and say I hit them first.”
We’ll keep you posted on anymore updates surrounding YNW Melly’s case.
The case of YNW Melly is still developing, and his associate YNW Bortlen allegedly spoke to police about the incident that provoked his arrest. Moreover, newly released audio shows a conversation between Bortlen and an unidentified speaker. During the exchange, the YNW associate spoke briefly on the night two close friends, YNW Sakchaser and YNW Juvy, died in a shooting.
“I’m trying to make sure I don’t get hit,” the rapper began. “And you’re telling me about this- I don’t know, you know what I’m saying? I’m driving… S**t crazy, bro.”
Furthermore, the last update we got from Melly was a plea for his life. Moreover, the “Mixed Personalities” rapper posted on Instagram that he “feared for [his] life” after threats from officials at his prison.
“As of this moment today I am officially in fear of my life,” Melly wrote last December. “A new Captain named Hubert and XO Jenkins have taken over the jail for two weeks now. They’ve handed out even harsher punishments for me [than] the previous ones in place.
“They are watching my every move on camera,” he continued. “Making sure I don’t use the phone to tell the world how I am being mistreated, discriminated, threatened physically, harassed… [Deputies, lieutenants, and sergeants] say ‘they will hide me from the world’ and threaten to ‘beat my ass every day.’ If I tell my lawyers they will lie and say I hit them first.”
Meanwhile, many assume that the person Bortlen spoke to is a detective. While the rapper did not provide any specific details or incriminations in the clip, the other voice goes on.
“I know it’s not for you to worry about,” he began. “But if you told me it happened there, there’s got to be some evidence there… There’s going to be broken glass over there, when the windows got shot out. There’s going to be casings from the people shooting at your car. Okay, there’s going to be stuff, evidence over there. Right now, there’s nothing, okay? I kind of think I know what happened.”
While it seems the other voice sought out more details, the released clip cuts off at that moment. Moreover, the lack of evidence as of now seems to hint at a difficult case to make heads or tails of. Regardless, confessions and conversations like these will prove instrumental to the “Murder On My Mind” rapper’s case.
Still, what do you think of YNW Bortlen speaking to police about YNW Melly’s charges and the incident that locked him up? Whatever the case, let us know in the comments down below. Also, as always, stay tuned to HNHH for the latest on YNW Melly’s case.
Rapper YNW Melly appears to be experiencing some serious struggles in jail as he await his murder trial, going so far as to say that he is being threatened by jail staff and that he fears for his life.
On Monday, the artist took to Instagram, sharing two separate uploads of mugshots, describing allegations of what may be considered cruel and unusual punishment and a violation of his civil rights at Broward County Jail in For Lauderdale, Florida.
The first caption reads as follows:
“As of this moment today I am officially in fear of my life. A new Captain named Hubert and XO Jenkins have taken over the jail for two weeks now and have handed out even harsher punishments for me then the previous ones in place. Since December 1 I have been moved and housed on a unit that holds 24 inmates at once. I am the only inmate being housed on the vacant unit, with no phone privilege, no television and no access to a newspaper. They are watching my every move on camera making sure I don’t use the phone to tell the world how I am being mistreated, discriminated, threatened physically, harassed. When I come out of my cell for the 1 hour a day, all other inmates in the adjoining dorms must go back in there cell. I am being subjected to cruel and unusual treatment at the hands of deputies and high-ranking staff of the Broward Sheriffs Office. I have been threatened by Deputies, Lieutenants and Sergeants that say “they will hide me from the world” and threaten to “beat my ass everyday and if I tell my lawyers they will lie and say I hit them first.” Words from Sergeant Anthony Kidd and Lieutenant Jean Baptiste. I have literally been hidden from the World so I have no other choice but to believe the next step is them beating ½ to death like they do to other inmates almost daily here at the main jail in Broward County.”
Melly also tagged several local and national news channels at the end of the post.
In a second post, he shared another mugshot and wrote:
“I cant call my family or lawyers to notify them if I have been beaten or harassed. They say my phone privileges are taken permanently because all of the infractions over the last seven months. THAT IS A LIE! They took my phone privileges indefinitely off of my 1″ violation for using another inmates pin to talk on the phone when I am not allowed to use the phone. If I had been treated like every other inmate at this facility my phone pin would have been restored and phone privileges given back after 30 days per the handbook. I have however went without phone privileges since MAY 8, 2022 and have not been given back my phone pin since the first year I was here. I have served all my disciplinary time so why are my phone privileges still taken. Why am I the ONLY inmate on a unit by themselves BLOCKED from any human interaction? There are inmates here, that have been convicted, of orchestrating robberies over the jail phone and another who planned an escape from jail that was carried out over the jail phone, they are still allowed to use the phone after committing serious crimes and security threats to the facility. But my phone privileges are taken indefinitely for violating a harmless phone policy that carries a punishment of 30 days max!!! I am housed and surrounded in the care of power struck deputies and captains of high authority that even have told me to my face that “they don’t like me” and “I pissed them off”. I am not safe in the hands of these people especially if the highest in command in the jail “doesn’t like me”. I am in fear of my life. My family is in fear of my life. I can not do another day here. Someone please help me get moved to another county jail until my trial. PLEASE!”
