The Hip Hop world has openly expressed its relief after Young Thug was released from prison this week, but the YSL RICO trial continues with two other codefendants and a new piece of evidence. The stabbing of YFN Lucci in 2022 while behind bars reportedly contributed heavily to how prosecutors presented the YSL RICO case and the purported danger a the feud between the two factions.
Reported YSL member, Jayden Myrick aka YSL Tripp, allegedly stabbed Lucci in March 2022, which was before the YSL RICO indictment was handed down or any arrests were made in the case. Shannon Stillwell and Deamonte Kendrick aka Yak Gotti are the only two co-defendants left in the case, so any evidence left to be presented in the RICO case will be brought forth in their trial.
On Tuesday (November 7), prosecutors shared the footage from the YFN Lucci stabbing during the YSL RICO trial during the retired Fulton County Jail security head’s testimony. Prosecutors claim that this supports the notion that YSL members carried out criminal acts on behalf of the collective. Also, they allege that this stabbing resulted in the retaliatory murder of Shymel Drinks, according to local court journalist Meghann Cuniff.
Additionally, the court ordered Myrick, Lucci’s alleged assailant, to undergo a mental evaluation after he claimed that Donald Trump offered him legal advice. There is no timeline for the trial of Stillwell and Kendrick, but the YSL RICO trial has been the longest trial ever in the state of Georgia.
It has also been reported that Lucci, whose real name is Rashawn Bennett, could be getting out of prison on parole as soon as January 2025.
Just weeks after the death of Atlanta trap pioneer Rich Homie Quan, social media lit up with rumors that Quan’s former labelmate and fellow Atlanta trap rap fixture YFN Lucci had also died while serving out his sentence after pleading guilty to racketeering charges earlier this year.
However, the rapper’s attorney, Drew Findling, confirmed to TMZ that Lucci is still alive and kicking. Lucci, whose song “Everyday We Lit” with the late PnB Rock was his highest-charting hit at No. 33 on the Hot 10, was sentenced to 10 years in prison and 10 on probation after being indicted on racketeering charges in 2021. Per the terms of his plea deal, he became eligible for parole sometime this summer after time served and good behavior, however, it’s unclear whether he truly was released, as he’s kept a low profile since that news.
The racketeering charges against Lucci were among several similar cases brought against a string of rappers in recent years, including the much-publicized case against Lucci’s chief rival, Young Thug. That case generated a wave of controversy from the public due to its use of lyrics as evidence against him, and although some speculated Lucci might be called to testify against his nemesis, his lawyer actually wound up speaking out against the use of Georgia’s RICO law to indict both, calling it racist.
It’s certainly a relief to that Lucci is alive and well, considering how many rap artists have died way before their times this year.
Six months ago, rapper YFN Lucci, whose real name is Rayshawn Bennett, was sentenced to 20 years in prison with three and a half years to serve after accepting a plea deal in his Fulton County RICO trial. Now, he may be heading home sooner than expected, thanks to an unorthodox move by Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis.
Now, DA Willis submitted has letter to the State Board of Pardons and Paroles supporting Lucci’s early release. WSBTV reports that the letter, obtained by Channel 2’s Michael Seiden, signifies a major development in the rapper’s case. Seiden spoke exclusively with Lucci’s criminal defense attorney, Drew Findling, about the implications of this letter.
“The District Attorney of Fulton County did the unorthodox,” Findling said. “That letter from the district attorney is a powerful punch and is really at the heart of the letter and supporting documents and the memorandum that we have shared with the parole board.”
Findling and his team are working diligently to secure Lucci’s immediate release, although it may not happen until January 2025. In January, Bennett pleaded guilty to one count of violating the Street Gang and Terrorism Prevention Act. He was sentenced to 20 years, with 10 to serve in custody and the balance on probation.
The district attorney’s letter, written on June 11, states:
“Pursuant to the parties’ negotiated agreement, the State does not object to Defendant, Rayshawn Bennett, being released from the Department of Corrections the first time he becomes eligible for parole or after serving one-third of his prison sentence, whichever comes first. This recommendation by the State is conditioned upon the Defendant’s compliance with the lawful authority of all Department of Corrections personnel and having had no incidents of any kind in any facility in which he has been housed while in the custody of the Department of Corrections. Attached to this letter is a file-stamped copy of the Defendant’s Final Disposition. Should any of the Board Members have questions regarding the State’s recommendation, please feel free to contact my office anytime.”
Louisiana-born rapper Boosie Badazz has come a long way in the rap game since his days as a member of the Southern hip-hop collective Concentration Camp. Formerly known as Lil Boosie, Boosie Badazz’s influence in the rap game, especially in Southern hip-hop, is undeniable. Hence, it isn’t surprising that some of the greatest talents in rap music gained inspiration from Boosie.
However, his impact on the genre came into question recently following remarks made by Kanye West. Still, Boosie knows his worth and is ready to defend his legacy at any opportunity. Thus, when Kanye West claimed to have invented every style of music for the last two decades, Boosie was among those who strongly disagreed with him. In October 2022, Boosie also claimed to have influenced more “street n****s” than any other rapper in history. Boosie made this claim during an interview with VladTV. While discussing Kodak Black’s tribute to him in the song, “Too Boosie,” Boosie Badazz declared, “Ain’t nobody ever in rap history never raised more street n****s than me. I’m talking ’bout no rapper in history raised more street n****s” than me.” Boosie further claimed that every generation loves him, adding that he is always thankful when people credit him for his career.
It takes a man worth his salt to make such claims, and Boosie wasn’t playing when he made those comments. But how true are his words? Is Boosie Badazz’s influence in the rap game as great as he makes it out to be? Here are five rappers who credited Boosie Badazz for influencing their music.
Memphis-born rapper Young Dolph opened up about how Boosie Badazz influenced him to start rapping. A clip from an interview before Young Dolph’s death showed him admitting to Boosie Badazz’s influence. The late rapper shared that he met Boosie through a friend, and they smoked weed together. In that moment, Young Dolph stated that he knew Boosie was an authentic individual, even as he lived a particularly affluent lifestyle. That attitude and show of wealth struck a chord with Young Dolph, who declared soon after they left Boosie’s place that he would start rapping.
Boosie also talked about his influence on Young Dolph’s career during an Instagram Live on Feb. 5, 2024. He revealed that Young Dolph decided to start rapping after selling him weed. Boosie shared, “[Young Dolph] said that after he sold me that weed, man, that n***a got there from rappin’? I’m fixin’ to rap. That was 2006. I inspired a lot of muthafuckas. A lot of muthafuckas. I just don’t like to give me my flowers. You gotta be a real n**** to give me my flowers.”

Besides Young Dolph, another late rapper who rose to fame thanks to Boosie Baddazz’s influence was Dallas MC MO3. MO3 was signed to Boosie’s label and collaborated with him on different occasions. They worked on the 2019 song “Errybody,” before collaborating on the joint album BadAzz Mo3 a year later. Boosie and Mo3’s album peaked at no. 136 on the US Billboard 200 chart.
MO3 spoke about Boosie Badazz’s influence on his musical career during a chat with Flaunt to promote his and Boosie’s joint album. MO3 was dubbed the Boosie of Dallas then and expressed his delight at earning that title. “It feels good. That’s an accomplishment. That means I’m destined to be legendary. I’m holding all that weight right now. I’m this generation’s Boosie,” he said. MO3 also described Boosie as his favorite rapper, saying, “That’s my favorite. I don’t have any other favorites. Because he rapped my life. He helped me get through my days. Before I was rapping, I was 14 listening to him.” MO3 is no longer alive, but he managed to make a great impact in his lifetime, thanks to Boosie.
Kodak Black is very grateful to Boosie Badazz for his influence and has never hidden his admiration for him. During an appearance on DJ Whoo Kid’s podcast, Whoolywood Shuffle, about five years ago, Kodak was asked which rappers inspired him while growing up. In his response, Kodak said, “Lil Boosie and Plies.” To show his appreciation for Boosie even more, Kodak released the song “Too Boosie,” in 2021. In the track, he paid tribute to Boosie and referenced how he acts like the Baton Rouge rapper. Kodak also rapped about Boosie’s influence on his lifestyle.
TEC
Baton Rouge rapper is another MC who gained inspiration from Boosie. Being from the same city as Boosie, it isn’t surprising that TEC was greatly influenced by him. TEC endured so much to get to where he is today and those life lessons taught him to be stronger. Tec, who has spoken about Boosie’s influence on his music, adopts the latter’s brash and vulnerable style. In October 2021, TEC released an album, Web The World, in which he featured Boosie in the song, “Clapped Up.”
In an interview with Passion Of The Weiss, Tec opened up about how it felt to feature Boosie on a song. He said, “That shit meant a lot. That was like a goal in itself. Everyone from Baton Rouge wanna get a song with Boose. He was everybody’s favorite rapper at some point. Especially if you from our city – f**k rapper, he’s a role model and shit. Everybody wanted to be that n***a, fa real. So, to have him on my album? That s**t raw.” In another interview with Thirty Visuals, TEC named Boosie Badazz as one of his biggest influences.
YFN Lucci
During YFN Lucci’s rise to fame, one of those who helped him was a close friend, Nut. In an interview with Complex, Lucci said, “I met Nut when I was like, 22.” Nut believed Lucci would become successful in the rap game and supported him willingly. However, Nut died right after Lucci dropped his first mixtapes. Lucci made an EP titled Long Live Nut to honor his late friend. The last song on the EP was the track “Testimony,” featuring Boosie, who was Nut’s favorite rapper. Like Boosie, the Atlanta-based YFN Lucci employs emotive storytelling in his lyrics. In the mid-1990s, C-Murder rose to prominence as a member of the supergroup TRU. Despite achieving success, however, his career was overshadowed by legal troubles. The rapper’s involvement in a high-profile murder case ultimately led to the end of his musical career. In 2002, C-Murder was convicted of the second-degree murder of a 16-year-old fan at a nightclub in Louisiana. He was accused of pulling the trigger, leading to his arrest and subsequent trial. Following his trial, the rapper was sentenced to life in prison with no parole.

When YFN Lucci was accused of murder, assault, and racketeering in 2021, fans did not expect the rapper to turn himself in. However, surprising his devoted listeners, Lucci submitted himself to the authorities. Since then, he has been in jail, awaiting trial. After about three years in jail, his trial finally began. Lucci pleaded guilty to one count of violating the Street Gang Terrorism and Prevention Act. Additionally, the plea deal he took saw prosecutors drop all other charges against him. While YFN Lucci was originally sentenced to 20 years in prison, it was subsequently reduced to 10 years. He has already served three years, and will soon be eligible for parole, according to his legal team.
Following his original sentence, Max B would have been one of the rappers to spend the longest time in prison. In 2009, he was arrested and charged in connection with a botched robbery that resulted in a homicide. Alongside his two accomplices, Max B was accused of planning and carrying out the robbery that led to the man’s death. Subsequently, he was found guilty of multiple charges and sentenced to 75 years in prison. However, in 2016, his sentence was reduced to 20 years after he pleaded guilty to aggravated manslaughter.

The legal battle between rappers Tory Lanez and Megan Thee Stallion ultimately landed Lanez in prison. The case was heavily publicized, and stayed trending for years until Lanez was eventually sentenced in 2023. In August 2020, Megan Thee Stallion accused Tory Lanez of shooting her in the foot. Addressing the accusation through multiple songs, Lanez vehemently denied the shooting. The case dragged on for a while before a verdict was reached. Finally concluding the trial, on August 8, 2023, Tory Lanez was sentenced to 10 years in prison.
Of all the rappers on this list, Big Lurch inarguably has the most horrific reason for being in prison. The rapper’s career was marred by a gruesome and tragic incident that led to his incarceration. In 2002, Big Lurch was arrested and charged with the brutal murder of Tynisha Ysais, his roommate. In detail, Ysais was found dead in her apartment with her chest torn open and parts of her lungs missing. Reportedly, Big Lurch was under the influence of PCP at the time of the murder. During the subsequent trial, the rapper’s defense argued that he was not in control of his actions because of the drugs. However, despite these claims, he was ultimately found guilty of murder. Big Lurch was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole on November 7, 2003.
Tay-K
In 2016, Tay-K was involved in a home invasion robbery in Mansfield, Texas, during which Ethan Walker, a 21-year-old man, was fatally shot. Subsequently, Tay-K was arrested and charged with capital murder. While awaiting trial for his involvement in the home invasion, he was placed on house arrest. However, the rapper cut off his ankle monitor and fled to San Antonio, Texas. During his time on the run, Tay-K released “The Race.” The song detailed his experiences as a fugitive and quickly went viral. Subsequently, he was apprehended and sentenced to 55 years in prison.
Philadelphia-based rapper AR-Ab was indicted on federal drug trafficking charges in 2019. Not many rappers have served time in prison for drugs as long as AR-Ab will. He was sentenced to 45 years in prison on April 15, 2021. Following his trial, the rapper was found guilty of multiple charges, including conspiracy to distribute controlled substances, and distribution of cocaine, among others.
YFN Lucci is dealing with a pretty major setback in his life right now. YFN Lucci was first arrested on the RICO indictment in May 2021. Since then, the Fulton County district attorney worked diligently to build a case against Lucci and his associates with interconnected charges including aggravated assault, murder, and a host of other gang-related activities.
The District Attorney’s office, presently prosecuting a trial against Young Thug and his YSL associates, alleges the music outfit’s involvement in real-life gang activity. In both the YSL and YFN Lucci cases, prosecutors have entered song lyrics as evidence, aiming to use the rhetoric about crime within the tracks as confessions to the charges. These cases are on track to set an incredibly dangerous precedent in the United States court system, as the use of song lyrics, which are often fictional or metaphorical, is arguably a violation of freedom of speech and artistic expression.
The two alleged gang outfits have made no secret of their beef with one another, which includes alleged incidents of violence on both the streets and prisons of Atlanta. Unlike Young Thug, who is voraciously fighting against the court system, YFN Lucci has taken a guilty plea for a sentence of 20 years. Apparently the YFN artist reached the plea deal during the jury selection last week. The court has accepted time served as credit toward the sentence, which includes 10 years in federal custody and 10 more on probation. Per parole eligibility rules in the county, the rapper could theoretically be considered for release in under four months. Two unnamed YFN associates also took similar plea deals alongside the YFN Lucci trial.
The plea deal allowed Lucci to have 12 of the 13 charges brought against him dismissed entirely, including all counts of racketeering. According to his lawyers, the rapper has pleaded guilty to a single charge, specifically in violation of the Street Gang Terrorism and Prevention Act, enacted in 1998. Lucci managed to escape one of the counts linked to a 2020 shooting death. If found guilty, Lucci could have faced a life sentence for the charge in question.

However, as “Key To The Streets” had a better overall chart performance than “Wet,” it was a bigger commercial success. All things considered, “Key To The Streets” has earned the title of YFN Lucci’s best-selling song.

Arguably the biggest standout track on HIStory, this song is a powerful entry in YFN Lucci’s discography. On “7.62,” the rapper proudly displays his songwriting chops.
