Westside Gunn Claims His Upcoming Album Was Recorded In A Day

Westside Gunn doesn’t take long breaks between albums. The Buffalo rapper has been one of the most prolific artists of the 2020s. He’s dropped five projects in the last two years, in addition to tons of guest features. Gunn has been teasing the release of Fly God Is an Awesome God 3 for months, but he decided to treat the fans to a little something extra on August 18. Westside Gunn took to Instagram to announce that he’ll be dropping another album before Fly God Is an Awesome God 3. This one was reportedly laid down in a single day.

Westside Gunn told fans that he wanted to challenge himself by recording lots of songs in a single session. To see if he still had “it,” as he put it. “I just made this album in a day,” he said in the Instagram video. “I wanted to see if I still had it.” The Griselda star then built up more anticipation by claiming that the release of the untitled album is imminent. “Listen, I’m not even waiting. I want to drop this ASAP,” he teased. “I gotta go figure out what I gotta do, how I gotta do it, whatever distribution, I want this out ASAP. This is to let people know.”

Westside Gunn provided further context for the new album in the captions. He claimed that it came about during the sessions for Fly God Is an Awesome God 3. Evidently, the vibe that was captured in these sessions was so unique that he decided to make it its own thing. “I came here to mix and master my album and was waiting for my files,” he recalled. “So I had played some beats and caught a vibe. [I] told him load it and made a joint. Then made another joint and then made another joint and now 24hrs later i made a new project.”

Westside Gunn is famous for being a proficient emcee in the studio. He talked about his process during a 2022 interview with The Fader. He emphasized the importance of “energy” when it comes to recording good music. “It’s always off energy,” the rapper explained. “That’s why I do it so quick. I’m not a person who’s in the studio four times a week. I might rap five, six times a year, and out of that year you might get two projects.” His math checks out. We can’t wait to hear what both of his 2024 projects sound like.

Westside Gunn Announces “Flygod Is An Awesome God”, Arriving This Fall

Westside Gunn is back on the radar. After a surprisingly quiet year by his standards, Gunn officially announced Flygod Is An Awesome God 3. The follow-up to last year’s And Then You Pray For Me and official release of Hall & Nash 2 with Conway The Machine and The Alchemist arrives later this year. The lead single, “Chocolate Face” features assistance from DJ Khaled. TNA Wrestling used the track as the theme song to their Slammiversary event on July 20.

Flygod Is An Awesome God 3 is the third installment in Westside Gunn’s Flygod Is An Awesome God series. The first one released in July 2019, while the second arrived just under a year later. The first mixtape received praise, while the second received a more mixed reaction. Of course, this announcement, shared via X (formerly Twitter) excited Gunn fans, who always look forward to new releases from him. Some noted that a release date was not shared, voicing their impatience in the process. In promotion of “Chocolate Face” being used at Slammiversary, TNA noted that his album releases in the fall.

Westside Gunn has become one of hip-hop’s foremost auteurs. His dynamic rap style and nasally delivery over expensive-sounding beats has become popular among fans over the years. These days, Gunn himself is in hip-hop limbo. He has not broken into the mainstream, but he is also too popular to consider an underground artist in the same way that others are considered underground artists. Regardless, he has a dedicated fanbase who will always check for new music from him, regardless of how much of it he comes out with.

As previously noted, this announcement did not come with a release date. Westside Gunn has released several projects on or around Halloween. With that in mind, it is very possible that Flygod Is An Awesome God 3 is still months away. In the meantime, Gunn teased a mixtape for fans while he continues to develop a release strategy for his latest full-length album. Gunn’s announcement is the latest addition to what has quickly become a great year for hip-hop music and fans alike. Hopefully, his newest work is closer to release than we think.

Westside Gunn & DJ Khaled Song Used At TNA Wrestling Event

Westside Gunn is a lifelong fan of professional wrestling. He often appears in the front row when WWE or All Elite Wrestling are in New York. He played fellow Buffalo native Daniel Garcia to the ring before a match in September 2022. The Griselda trio of he, Benny The Butcher, and Conway The Machine are famous for their sports references. He and Conway refer to themselves as Hall & Nash, referencing The Outsiders, the tag team of Kevin Nash and the late Scott Hall. Gunn even has a mixtape called Fourth Rope, with every track named after a wrestler or something related to wrestling.

On Saturday, TNA Wrestling held their Slammiversary event. The yearly show was the 20th in the Slammiversary series, while the company celebrated its 22nd year of existence. TNA used Westside Gunn’s single “Chocolate Face” as the theme song for the event. “Chocolate Face” features DJ Khaled and is the lead release for Gunn’s next album, Flygod Is An Awesome God 3. Gunn previously attended TNA’s No Surrender event in February.

Professional wrestling and hip-hop have long overlapped. Wrestlers have had rap songs as entrance music for years. Wale hosts his yearly WaleMania event during WWE’s WrestleMania weekend, where wrestlers and rappers come together to party and tell stories. All Elite Wrestling has multiple hip-hop inspired albums about different wrestlers on the roster. Action Bronson competed in a match a couple of years ago. Westside Gunn providing music for TNA Wrestling is not surprising, especially considering his own love of the wrestling business.

Flygod Is An Awesome God 3 arrives this fall. The usually prolific Westside Gunn has been surprisingly quiet this year, with no new music over halfway through 2024. Conway The Machine and Benny The Butcher have both released new albums already, leaving Gunn as the last of the trio to come out with something fresh. Gunn recently teased a mixtape to hold fans over until he’s ready to drop his next work. His collaboration with TNA is the latest work Gunn has done with a wrestling promotion, and it probably won’t be long until fans see him in a different promotion.

Benny The Butcher Dubs Lloyd Banks One Of The Top Rappers Ever

Benny the Butcher is part of a long line of New York rap cliques. Griselda took the music world by storm in the 2020s, thanks in no small part to Benny’s gritty rhymes and intricate wordplay. He helped to spark a movement alongside Westside Gunn and Conway the Machine. Benny is no stranger to the cliques who came before, however. The Buffalo rapper has praised the likes of Dipset and G-Unit in the past, but he felt the need to single out one artist in particular during a recent Instagram Story: Lloyd Banks.

50 Cent was the head honcho of G-Unit, but Benny told fans that Lloyd Banks was the real unsung talent of the outfit. “Lloyd Banks, one of the top n**gas ever,” Benny the Butcher stated. “That’s one rap n**ga that n**gas don’t wanna play with.” The praise didn’t end there. The rapper claimed that Lloyd Banks was unrivaled when it came to “bars” and inventing clever turns of phrase. “He got a million lines,” he added. “You be like, ‘How the f*ck I didn’t think of that.’” The praise makes perfect sense, given that Benny has worked with Banks before. They were two of the rappers featured on the Griselda posse cut “Element of Surprise.” Benny and Banks also linked up for the 2022 single “Living Proof.”

The admiration that Benny the Butcher has for the G-Unit rapper is not one-sided. Lloyd Banks hopped on social media (a rarity) in 2022 to praise the Griselda album WWCD. He posted the artwork and track list for the album, along with the message: “Shout to the griselda family. New Album out now WWCD sh*t is [fire emoji] and the production is incredible.” The rapper has undergone a critical reappraisal in the last few years, partially due to the attention he’s gotten from Griselda. He told Billboard that he was grateful to be in the position he’s in. He then likened himself to former Lox rapper Jadakiss.

“They make these boxes with certain artists like me and Jadakiss,” Banks told the outlet in 2022. “We haven’t been pushed out of them boxes. I don’t know what you want to attribute that to, but I’m grateful we passed the test of time.” The rapper also noted that he’s going to continue to put distance between him and his peers as he gets older and refines his craft. “Moving forward, I feel like my subject matter alone is gonna put me in a different stratosphere,” he asserted. “I care more about my sh*t than anybody else does.” Hard to argue with him or Benny.

Westside Gunn Weighs In On Whether He Wants Rap Beef

Westside Gunn doesn’t play around when it comes to music. He’s one of the hardest-working rappers in the game, and he has the catalog to prove it. Gunn has dropped 10 projects in the last four years, both as a solo artist and with other members of Griselda. He doesn’t need to rely on hype or press tours in which he says wild things about other artists. That said, 2024 has been the year of rap beef, and fans want to know their favorite rapper would fare in a battle.

A fan tweeted at Westside Gunn on April 28. He voiced his desire to see Gunn challenge another rapper to a battle, citing how entertaining it would be to watch. “I wanna see @WESTSIDEGUNN in a music only rap beef,” they wrote. That would be some entertaining sh*t.” Gunn got back at him and shut down any chance of seeing him in a “for sport” beef. “Maaaaaan,” he quote tweeted. “F*ck all these n**gas!!!” It makes sense, given how many actual beefs Gunn has been involved in. He’s thrown subliminal shots at Hus Kingpin, and had a diss aimed at him via Griselda affiliate The God Fahim.

Westside Gunn and The God Fahim squashed their beef in 2020, however. The rappers made up X and even posted a couple photos together on Christmas. “Don’t think @THAGODFAHIM wasn’t there too,” he tweeted. “Now let me get back to my original plan. I’m the curator of ALL curators… Just start wit a fresh canvas.” Gunn similarly sparked a feud with Griselda affiliate Mach Hommy around 2019, but it was again squashed in favor of making great music. There’s no time wasted on social media antics or trolls, as has been the case in the mainstream. Drake, Kendrick Lamar, Kanye West and the rest involved in the “Civil War” have taken it beyond the music.

The irony is that Westside Gunn has indirectly influenced this mainstream “Civil War.” He was one of the first rappers to work with Conductor Williams, who would go on to provide beats for Drake on his latest album, For All the Dogs. Conductor also co-produced J. Cole’s diss towards Kendrick Lamar, “7 Minute Drill.” Westside Gunn’s ear for production and his popularization of the Griselda sound has shaped the beef he so wants to avoid. Go figure.

You would be hard pressed to find another rapper who had a more productive and successful 2023 than Conway the Machine. There are a lot of artists that constantly have new music ready, but not many can top the quality of the Griselda affiliate. It was especially incredible to see how the Buffalo native was able to squeak out two records within the last week of 2023. One of those two records was Hall & Nash 2 with Westside Gunn and The Alchemist. It was a nine-song tape; that is if you bought a physical copy. If you did you would be able to hear Conway the Machine on “Halal.”

Additionally, if you were able to snag either a vinyl or CD of the record, the album cover was different. You can see the alternate work up above. Now, everyone can hear this bonus track, as it is currently on YouTube. Conway kicks off “Halal” with signature crackly and gravelly flows.

ASAP Rocky Showcases Unreleased Westside Gunn Track During Orchestral Performance

With every year comes another wave of anticipated albums. ASAP Rocky’s has to be at the top of people’s lists in 2024. Throughout 2023, the New York multi-hyphenate relentlessly teased his forthcoming record Don’t Be Dumb. Many thought it would drop, especially after he came through with two singles “Same Problems?” and “RIOT (Rowdy Pipe’n).” Both brought different vibes and look to be additions to the tracklist when that ever gets revealed. If this year roughly follows the same song pattern as the one before it, then we could be in for a new treat very soon.

ASAP Rocky was in Europe this past weekend for a glamorous charity concert in Paris, according to HipHopDX. Many other music celebs were in attendance, including his “RIOT” collaborator Pharrell and his boo Rihanna. Besides the spectacle that was Rocky and his accompanying orchestra, the song that was played is what is getting the buzz. The track is rumored to be called “Whiskey” and it features Griselda rapper Westside Gunn.

ASAP Rocky And Westside Gunn Have A Hit In The Vault

Damon Albarn, one-half of the famed alternative band Gorillaz, is also in the mix. Clams Casino tag teams the production making for an all-star lineup. We have no true idea of what the original version sounds like, but Rocky’s rapping and flows are very solid. Late last year, ASAP and Westside were in the studio together, presumably working on “Whiskey,” according to HipHopDX. Gunn even detailed their link-up in the studio on Twitter, as seen above. This would not be their first collab, but, it sounds like it could be their best.

Two of Griselda’s best, Westside Gunn and Conway the Machine, have been delivering big time this year. Both New York products have not been shy in releasing singles, dropping albums, and appearing as features. In fact, “MiNt cHoCoLaTe” is not the only track Conway was a part of today. The Buffalo native appeared on a Logic and Riff Raff song as well.

For Westside, he has been a tad less carefree. His sole album release was indeed his last. And Then You Pray For Me, was the follow-up to 2020’s Pray for Paris. It saw him foray into the trap scene, more than ever before. It was a solid send-off for him in terms of albums. He is still going to drop mixtapes and EPs, do not worry.
