Kamaiyah Has A Wavy & Chill Vibe With “Kaori”

Kamaiyah always carries a bubbly and free-spirited personality with her wherever she goes. The California rapper and singer has used this to her advantage over the course of her nearly decade-long career. It’s led to a lot of underrated hits and some big features such as “Why You Always Hatin?” and more. The way she’s pretty effortlessly able to craft catchy raps with laid-back and sometimes comedic deliveries is admirable. This allows her to work in many different tonal settings, such as a more chill hip-hop space. That’s the aesthetic Kamaiyah went for on her most recent EP, Alternative Space. It’s her fourth project of 2024 and it arrives just in time with 2025 around the corner.

It follows up on her more self-reflective Figuring Out My Emotions, Before We Party, and then November’s Ms Everything. While this is certainly a lot of music, Kamaiyah has been keeping busy elsewhere. She dropped an accompanying documentary for Ms Everything on Christmas, and it seems that this eagerness to create is carrying into 2025. “Ms Everything Documentary dropping on Christmas and a new project Friday. Who working hard as me? 2025 we coming alive 🤍” she wrote. Hopefully we get an album in the coming months, but let’s redirect our focus to Alternative Space. One reason why we love this tape is due to the instrumental palette she’s presenting on it. It lives up to its name with wavy and darker productions, two ways we would describe maybe our favorite cut, “Kaori.” Kamaiyah brings this speedy and confident flow to the song and it’s helping us fall in love with it even more. She what she was able to deliver below.

Peysoh Follows Up On Kendrick Lamar Feature With “Peysoh Did It” EP

With Kendrick Lamar’s new project GNX, there was a huge emphasis on embodying the West Coast sound and then some. Overall, it did a great job at doing this sonically and visually, with the features helping out a great deal as well. K. Dot is extremely tapped in as we all know, and it showed once again on GNX. Artists like Lefty Gunplay, Hitta J3, AzChike, and now Peysoh, have been doing a wonderous job themselves. It goes for getting those features but capitalizing on them too. While they are known within West Coast circles, they weren’t really getting the same exposure until last month. Now, outlets and fans are starting to check out their material and there’s evidence to back that up.

The talent has been discovered and now it’s just a matter of building on that momentum. Peysoh, as we said, is taking those steps as we speak. He did so this weekend by leaving off a new five-song EP, Peysoh Did It. It’s a fitting title given the year he’s having due in part to the Kendrick collab. But he’s showing that he’s also a lot more than some sidekick. Peysoh has a murderous and cutthroat tone to his music and its prevalent on this new collection of solo tracks. Fans and other major artists have been backing these songs so far, and we are more than fine joining the hype train. See what Peysoh provides on Peysoh Did It, by checking out the streaming platform links below.

The Game Cries While Addressing Absence From West Coast Hip-Hop Conversations

It goes without saying that not every artist gets the respect or recognition they deserve, and according to The Game, he might be among them. During a recent interview, the rapper opened up about being left out of conversations about West Coast hip-hop. He grew emotional during the discussion, indicating that while this might weigh heavily on him, he has bigger priorities at this point in his life.

“It’s easy for me to give my flowers to Kendrick, and YG, and Ice Cube, and say I love and miss Nip and do all of that,” he explained. “And I get left out of all the conversations, I get left off the murals, I don’t give a f*ck about none of that. I literally am just trying to stay alive to see my daughter walk down the aisle, and that’s it. My purpose is only to be a father.” Supporters can’t blame The Game for getting a bit teary-eyed while discussing his kids. This is especially true considering he just welcomed his youngest son this month.

The Game Says He’s Focused On Being A Dad

Evelyn Lozada confirmed that her daughter Shaniece Hairston was the boy’s mother in a sweet celebratory post about the birth. “This little blue-eyed angel made me a grandma, and I’m forever grateful!” she wrote at the time. “You’ve brought so much joy into my life that words can’t even explain. I love you more than anything, Blaze Taylor! #GrandmaLove #ForeverGrateful #BlazeTaylor.”

Talk of The Game being left out of West Coast hip-hop conversations started over the summer too, when he was noticeably absent from Kendrick Lamar’s “Pop Out” show. At the time, he took to Instagram Live to shut down rumors, clarifying that he has no beef with Kendrick. “Stop speculating and doing all that goofy sh*t,” he told his followers. “Muthaf**kas in my DM, all these blog sites talking about ‘the West Coast ain’t f**king with you and you ain’t this and you ain’t that.’ I be in my own lane, chilling. Taking care of my kids.”

Mozzy & Kalan.FrFr Meet Halfway With One Another On “Lucky Her”

While Mozzy and Kalan.FrFr are both from California, it still feels like two sonic worlds are colliding on LUCKY HER. This a first-time collaboration project between the Sacramento and Los Angeles natives, but they aren’t total strangers. They have popped up on two other tracks in the past, with the examples being Mozzy’s “Whole 100” and Kalan’s “No Love.” Ironically, each of those are 2021 releases, so it’s been three years since their last linkups. So, with all of that said, why does LUCKY HER come across as two different styles clashing? Well, Kalan is a more melodic talent. Although, he has shown that he can tap into more aggressive pockets. In fact, “Dice Game,” his most recent solo record is a sample you can look at.

But for the most part, he likes to bring more a wavy, summery, and low-key vibe when he’s on a cut. As for Mozzy, he’s more likely to drop a “Dice Game,” for example. So, do they mesh well for 10 tracks? For the most part, they do. But we will say Mozzy can sound a little out of his element, as his flows on songs like “EULOGY” and “EGGS IN THE MORNING” feel out of place delivery wise. He sticks to the themes no problem, but it’s how he comes across in these cases that throws the energy off. Still, there are some slaps like “SPEEDIN!” that we find enjoyable. Overall, they were able to sort of comprise and combine moody ballads with more banger-like beats. Check out LUCKY HER with the links below.

Kalan.FrFr Is Seeing Right Through His Competitions’ Facades On “Dice Game”

California rapper and crooner Kalan.FrFr is issuing a fair warning to those who think they big and bad. The PSA appears on his latest release, “Dice Game,” his first solo single since April’s “EVERYBODY.” If you remember that track made its way onto May EP, MAKE THE WEST GREAT AGAIN, which landed almost week after Kendrick Lamar’s “Not Like Us.” We mention that fact because the West Coast was at the peak of its powers when that dropped, and Kalan dropped at the perfect time. Unfortunately, due it being just an EP, it didn’t have as much staying power as it could’ve had. There are some rumblings that he’s prepping a new album behind the scenes. So, we will just have to wait and see when that hits.

Maybe then he will get more people talking and we know he can do that. He’s very capable of dropping some heat and “Dice Game” is an example of that. The track has a dark and intimidating energy, which is fitting given its themes and lyrics. On it, Kalan.FrFr feels that too many people out there are faking how up they really are. “N****s too tough around the b****es, that’s weird s*** / N****s thinkin’ that they low-key plotting, but we hear s***,” he raps with vigor on his second verse. The beat is also a major highlight for us as it possesses that traditional West Coast bounce and trunk-knocking bass. This is Kalan in his more aggressive bag, which is one that we like hearing him approach. He can go off when he wants to, and “Dice Game” should be something that he runs with going forward.

DJ Akademiks Believes West Coast Hip-Hop Is Rarely Mainstream Now

Given how many artists have been popping off this year, it’s hard to pick just one that’s been the most dominant. There are arguments to be made for sure for a small handful. Kendrick Lamar, Future, and Tyler, The Creator immediately come to mind. You can also make the case for a region in 2024. The West Coast is definitely at the top of the list, thanks in large part to K. Dot. But ScHoolboy Q, SiR, Snoop Dogg and Dr. Dre (soon), are just a few others that have put out stellar projects. However, it goes beyond the mainstream names. Artists like Lefty Gunplay, JasonMartin, and Jay Worthy have also been doing some great things for the underground scene.

However, all of this isn’t enough for DJ Akademiks, who believes that this region isn’t as popular as people make it seem to be. He decided to present his argument to his livestream viewers recently, following some DMs between Mustard and Boi-1da that made the rounds. After initially supporting his Cali contemporary for his work on Lamar’s “Not Like Us,” the Drake affiliated producer had a change of heart. “West Coast rap is a**,” he said. Mustard decided to share that and the other key texts to publicly blast Boi-1da.

DJ Akademiks Has The Internet Split

DJ Akademiks personally doesn’t share that opinion, even though his takes on some West Coast artists would suggest otherwise. However, he recognizes that there are a few that have that much motion from that region. But it’s just that. Overall, Ak thinks that “99 percent” of rap from there doesn’t make it outside of California. For example, he mentions names like YG, who was dropping hit record after hit record back in the mid-2010s. But now, his sale numbers aren’t what they used to be.

Overall, his key reason as to why he stands by this claim is that he feels artists from there don’t market their material enough. Akademiks thinks most West Coast acts are overly sensitive and that they have a belief that they are on Kendrick’s level. Listening to his argument, he makes some points that make sense. In fact, he has quite a few agreeing with him as we speak. But he’s also losing some as well, as they are mentioning how they listen to West Coast music when they aren’t from there.

Mustard Leaks Boi-1da’s DMs Where He Calls West Coast Rap “Ass”

Mustard and Boi-1da both know what it takes to make great music, especially that represents the regions they are from. It’s always going to be up for debate on which area produces the better material. However, these two are obviously going to be a little bias toward the sounds they are familiar with. Even though they disagree, which is clear by these leaked DMs courtesy of Mustard, there’s got to be a mutual respect… right? Well, there’s definitely not anymore, that’s for sure. Boi-1da made that apparent thanks to some recent messages he sent to the “tv off” beat maker via Messenger.

What starts of the beef is a blurred-out video or photo with the following message attached: “West Coast rap is ass.” Mustard replied bluntly, “hater,” followed by “😂🫵🏿” There appears to be no texts before this that would’ve provoked Boi-1da to just say this. That is unless Mustard decided to hide what would be some telling information. Regardless, he’s very stunned by the “random” verbal attack” on his respective region of hip-hop. “@boi1da tell me this ain’t real crodie,” Mustard captioned the IG Story.

Mustard Weeds Out Another Snake In The Grass

But wait, there’s more. Boi-1da then proceeded to double down on his take after his contemporary tried to sway his opinion. “Ass,” he said again. He then added, “Nobody outside LA wanna hear that s***.” All Mustard could do in that moment was hit back with a laughing emoji. “@boi1da I thought you was a real one i ain’t kno you felt this way,” he captioned this exchange in another IG Story post.

Finally, Mustard shared one more series of messages. These ones are from May, immediately following the release of “Not Like Us.” It’s pretty crushing evidence against Boi-1da, as he was initially congratulating Mustard for the beat on the crushing Drake diss record. “Good s***… Beat hard AF.” He then proceeded to taunt Boi-1da by captioning these DMs, “You said you liked not like us😂 welp there’s enough yellow tape to go around🤷🏿‍♂️” He concluded with one more IG Story, writing, “and that’s the end of my ted talk. Lame a** n****.” Mustard buried him pretty good, so, let’s see how his newest enemy responds.

AzChike Makes His Solo Return With “Love Yo Weapons”

Kendrick Lamar helped put his fans and other hip-hop listeners on to some underappreciated West Coast talent on GNX. Lefty Gunplay, Dody6, Wallie the Sensei, and Hitta J3 are just a few. But there’s one in particular that we are focusing on today who wasn’t listed. AzChike is getting the HNHH spotlight shone on him this weekend thanks to “Love Yo Weapons.” It’s his newest single, and first solo release since May. The Los Angeles native really shined next to K. Dot on the eerie and intimidating “peekaboo,” trading some lines in an engaging performance. He’s equally so on this track, as he raps about the dangerous street life out West, life’s tests, and protecting your own.

Whether or not this lands on a project remains to be seen. AzChike has already dropped off three in 2024, including CHIZZLE, Spooky Summer, and Don’t Die Yet, with the latter being a collab tape with Low the Great. The production on “Love Yo Weapons” is another high-quality aspect of this track, though. It contains a woozy saxophone loop that pops in at various points throughout. Additionally, it’s got that West Coast bounce that you come to expect. If the effectiveness of this record is surprising to you, we want to remind you he’s been doing this for a while. He’s been in the business for about six years and has some solid cuts under his belt. Chike Different, his 2022 tape, features a great deal of his biggest songs. So, him getting the love from Lamar is great, but he would be doing just fine without the nod.

Lefty Gunplay & Hitta J3 Capitalize On Their Nods From Kendrick Lamar With “Stoopid”

It’s a West Coast takeover on “Stoopid,” one of Lefty Gunplay’s newest tracks. It’s off his most recent project, Most Valuable Gangbanger, which is his fourth tape of 2024. He’s quickly become a prolific artist after getting his start professionally last year. By the way, all of those tapes we mentioned are his first four of his career. That hard work has been paying off for the California rapper, as he landed a big-time feature that will carry a lot of momentum for him going forward. Of course, we are talking about his placement on Kendrick Lamar’s now viral hit off of GNX, “tv off.” But don’t get it twisted, he’s got talent and it’s all over this track below.

As we said, it’s an all-Cali link-up, with Hitta J3, 19-year-old YS, and Bozo in the mix. Speaking of J3, he also got the chance to shine on Lamar’s project. You can find him on the title track deeper into the record. Overall, this track is a major banger, with an excellent gangsta rap-like beat. That comes courtesy of Damn James! (Kanye West, Meek Mill, Ella Mai) and Ty Dolla $ign. It’s mean, it’s lean, and extremely hard-hitting right from the jump. J3 really kicks the track off right with some intimidating bars and nice flow over the slower production. Gunplay follows up right after, then YS, with Bozo maybe having the best verse of them all. But no one misses and it’s a track we can Gunplay hanging his hat on.

Lord Jamar Gets Roasted To Oblivion For Saying Kendrick Lamar Doesn’t Represent L.A.

Kendrick Lamar penned a strong love letter to the entire culture of Los Angeles and California at large with GNX. The bouncy G-funk and gangsta rap instrumentals are extremely prevalent on it. Moreover, the music video for “squabble up” paid homage to all sorts of West Coast imagery. With that said, there is good chance more of the same will happen if more visuals come out. It’s paid both in terms of the quality and financially speaking. It sold 319,000 units in its first week, it’s currently dominating the Billboard Hot 100, and is also atop the Hot 200. Overall, it’s put an incredible mark on the West Coast scene, which has just been having a dominant year.

You could say that he’s been a big part of why the region has been so successful thanks to his victory over Drake. All of the diss tracks, especially “Not Like Us,” are all songs of the year contenders, or at the very least near the top. All of these accomplishments are why Lord Jamar’s recent opinion on Kendrick Lamar doesn’t add up. For those unaware, the former is a New York MC, who’s known for some collabs with A Tribe Called Quest, Raekwon, RZA, among others.

Many Feel Lord Jamar Has Lost It With This Kendrick Lamar Take

He’s more of a commentator nowadays, using his podcast, The God Pod, to carry out his word. As it stands, he’s hearing it from the internet because he feels that The Game is much better representation of L.A. rap culture. This whole discussion began due to a listener saying that Kendrick is him, which Jamar vehemently disagrees with. “Game is that guy compared to f***ing Kendrick,” he begins his diatribe.

“Kendrick was supposed to be just like a nerd or some regular guy. Now all of a sudden he’s like a gang banger or some s***.” His co-host, Artie Stacks, seems to generally agree with him, as he considers him a “good MC,” whereas The Game is a “good L.A. rapper.” With comments like these, you know Lamar’s fans aren’t going to waste time defending him. Well, that’s exactly what’s going on, and they are making sure to expose Jamar relentlessly. “Lord Jamar is a flat Earther who thinks he’s a Native American and that slavery happened in reverse. Do with that what you will,” one user sums up. There’s plenty of other devious roasts in the comments, which you can find below.
