MTV Sets New Date for VMAs, Announces GloRilla and More as Performers

GloRilla Tapped as Audiomack's Latest #UpNow Artist

MTV has announced that the 2024 “VMAs” will air live from UBS Arena on Wednesday, September 11th, at 8 PM ET/PT, reaching audiences in over 150 countries. This year’s event will feature electrifying performances and unforgettable moments from some of the world’s biggest superstars.

In observance of the 23rd anniversary of 9/11, MTV will support the nonprofit 9/11 Day and Tuesday’s Children, which serve the families affected by the tragic event.

The first round of global music stars slated to perform includes Camila Cabello, Chappell Roan, GloRilla, Rauw Alejandro, and Sabrina Carpenter. Cabello, a four-time “VMAs” winner and GRAMMY®-nominated pop superstar, will perform for the third time, delivering a can’t-miss performance from her fourth studio album, C, XOXO. Cabello is also nominated for “Best Pop” and will be celebrated with a special fan tribute by BACARDÍ Rum during the show.

Trailblazing breakout star Chappell Roan will make her first-ever award show performance on the “VMAs” stage. Roan’s debut comes amidst a record-breaking year, including her first Top 10 hit on Billboard’s Hot 100 and critical acclaim for her album The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess. She is up for “Best New Artist” and another category.

GloRilla, a GRAMMY® nominee and the longest-charting female rap hitmaker of 2024, will debut on the “VMAs” stage. She is nominated for three awards, including “Best Hip-Hop” and “Best Collaboration” for “Wanna Be” with Megan Thee Stallion.

Latin GRAMMY Award-winner Rauw Alejandro will perform from his forthcoming fifth studio album. Alejandro, a first-time “VMAs” nominee, is up for three awards.

Sabrina Carpenter will make her main stage debut, following her epic mashup performance on last year’s Pre-Show. Carpenter is nominated for six Moon Persons, including artist and song of the year.

Taylor Swift leads the nominations with ten, followed by Post Malone with nine. Fans can vote for their favorites across 15 categories at vote.mtv.com through August 30th.

Sabrina Carpenter And Chappell Roan Are Performing At The 2024 MTV VMAs, Which Just Got Rescheduled

A few months ago, it was announced that the 2024 MTV VMAs were set to take place on September 10. Well, last week, it was revealed that Donald Trump and Kamala Harris had finally agreed to a presidential debate… on September 10. The VMAs would have presumably gotten the short end of that viewership conflict stick, so MTV took action.

Today (August 12), it was revealed that the VMAs will not air live from UBS Arena on September 11 at 8 p.m. ET. As Billboard notes, MTV said in a press release, “Our fans are encouraged to tune in for the 9/10 debate ahead of music’s most iconic night.”

Additionally, MTV also announced the first round of performers: Sabrina Carpenter, Chappell Roan, Camila Cabello, GloRilla, and Rauw Alejandro.

Meanwhile, the list of nominees was unveiled last week, and leading the lineup is Taylor Swift with 10 nods. Other notable nominees include Post Malone (who has nine nominations), Carpenter, Eminem, Ariana Grande (six each), SZA, and Megan Thee Stallion (five each). Fan voting for some categories is currently open until August 30, so find more information about that here.

New York Governor Kathy Hochul previously said of this year’s show, “We are excited to welcome back the MTV Video Music Awards to New York State. From its origins at Radio City Music Hall in 1984 to this September’s event at the UBS Arena, the VMAs continue to captivate millions, showcasing the very best in music video artistry. As we prepare to host this 40th anniversary event, let’s embrace the spirit of creativity and innovation that defines our state’s cultural landscape.”

Kendrick Lamar’s “Not Like Us” Just Got Its First Awards Nomination

One of the funniest lines in the whole Kendrick Lamar and Drake beef comes on The Boy’s “Family Matters”: “Kendrick just opened his mouth, someone go hand him a Grammy right now.” Not only is it a comically dismissive assessment making fun of K.Dot glazers in the white-dominated industry, but it’s also pretty accurate at Drizzy’s expense. Because it seems like the most fun, mocking, disparaging, and lightly disrespectful track in the whole battle, “Not Like Us,” is not just a hit with fans and critics, but with awards shows. Moreover, the Mustard-produced banger has just received its first award nomination: Song of the Year at the 2024 MTV Video Music Awards.

While it’s no golden gramophone, it’s still a pretty big and visible award that speaks to what Drake meant to say about Kendrick Lamar. Disses aside, the song and music video is undeniably worthy of high praise from pretty much every corner under the sun. But there are a lot of fans out there that find this nomination (and presumably more to come) pretty odd. On one hand, it’s a great song and visual treatment, but on the other, do we really want big corporations and the larger music industry to chip into a rap beef that should really just be a one-on-one cultural affair?

Kendrick Lamar Pops Out In MTV VMAs Nominations

OVO Stans will use this and other “Not Like Us” nominations to call Drake a prophet and clown Kendrick Lamar even further, whereas pgLang fans will rejoice in how embarrassing of a look this is for Aubrey Graham in the industry. But at the end of the day, a huge chunk of both fanbases couldn’t care less about awards, and would rather have ceremonies ignore their material instead of trying to pick a side, remove their context, or give praise to both.

We’ll see how this discourse evolves, and whether or not Kendrick Lamar or Drake actually show up to the event. We don’t have a clear idea of what all the nominations for this year’s VMAs look like, so keep an eye out for that in the coming days. In any case, the ceremony goes down on September 10. Will the Compton lyricist pop out, is this just an obligatory nomination, or does he really not care at all as long as the culture knows his victory?

Victoria Monet Reveals Why She Didn’t Perform At The VMAs

Earlier this year the MTV Video Music Awards played host to many of the biggest artists in all of music. In particular, Taylor Swift had a great night taking home numerous awards and Nicki Minaj once again shined as host. The award show also featured some of the top breakout talents in all of music. That included breakout Mexican sensation Peso Pluma, pop singer Renee Rapp, and the eventual Best New Artist winner Ice Spice. But one artist who wasn’t there was Victoria Monet.

Monet has been one of the breakthrough stars in R&B this year. She released her debut album JAGUAR II in August of this year to much critical acclaim. The album contains many of her biggest but one has separated itself from the pack. “On My Mama” proved to be her breakthrough hit on the charts landing on the Hot 100 following the release of her new album. It’s stuck around on the chart as well coming in at #59 this week after peaking at #48 earlier this month. Now she’s seen fit to explain her absence from the VMAs earlier this year.

Victoria Monet Talks VMAs Absence

Monet originally explained in a tweet the night of the event what she was told by MTV. They reportedly said that she was “too early in her story” for an invitation to the event. That already seemed fishy to fans who could see her breakout coming. But her success in the months since has likely only made MTV wish more and more that she had received an invite after all.

In the comments, some fans come to the defense of MTV. “Her music isn’t really MTV tho. I think they were being polite,” one fan suggests. “OK y’all gonna hate me for this, but it is too early for her. In my opinion her one song is bop yes, but VMAS is a big platform,” another comment reads. What do you think of Victoria Monet revealing why she wasn’t invited to the VMAs just a few months ago? Let us know in the comment section below.

GloRilla & JT Got Into Fight At VMAs, Fans Speculate

There are a lot of rumors floating around social media right now that GloRilla and JT had an altercation at the VMAs. Why? Well, it’s completely based off of hearsay, alleged first-hand accounts, and people mostly doubting whether it’s even true. With no video evidence or some real threads from either femcee to go by, take this with a huge grain of salt, as it’s probably just fake gossip. Still, fan response to it has been very strong online, especially on sites like Twitter where fanbases bicker and squabble every day. One particular account, though, claimed to be present at the alleged scuffle… which is just as much of an unsubstantiated claim as everything else involved here.

“I was at the vmas,” the user @NATERERUN wrote this week. “JT & glorilla argued but nobody got hands laid out on them lmaooo relax. Sexyy Red & her publicist stepped in between & stopped it so it wouldn’t get physical. End of the story.” Regardless, this is just one supposed side of a lot of clashing perspectives. As of writing this article, it doesn’t seem like either collaborator has responded to these rumors outright on Twitter or Instagram.

Twitter Speculates On Alleged JT & GloRilla Argument

Furthermore, this is some bizarre gossip to begin with, as the two have worked with each other in the past. Not only have they made a song together with the “F.N.F. (Let’s Go)” remix, but they’ve also supported each other on their own individual career endeavors and in public. For example, GloRilla tapped JT to provide a special guest appearance as her therapist in the music video for “Nut Quick.” As such, we don’t have any idea as to why these rumors are spreading with no evidence, video, or even subliminal shot in sight.

Meanwhile, both artists are having a great year so far with singles, performances, new project teases, and a whole lot more. Hopefully this is just somebody mishearing something and not two colleagues turning sour on each other. We’ll have to wait and see just how much weight there is behind this. Lil Wayne Speaks On VMAs Performance For Hip-Hop’s 50th, Says He Was “Nervous”

Lil Wayne recently rocked the stage at the 2023 MTV Video Music Awards; in fact, he graced fans with two separate performances. One was a medley of one of his biggest contemporary hits, “Uproar,” and his new single “Kat Food.” However, the other saw the New Orleans MC join LL Cool J, Run-DMC, Nicki Minaj, and more legends of the game to celebrate hip-hop’s 50th anniversary. Not only was it a special moment for him, but one that also proves that, no matter how deep you are into your career, you can still get stage jitters. During his appearance on Undisputed with good friend Skip Bayless, Weezy recalled the experience.

“We did catch you the other night on the VMAs. You lit it up. How did it feel to you? You were among legends, but you are the legend of legends. What did it feel like on stage?” Skip Bayless asked. “Nervous as usual,” Lil Wayne answered. “Same way I feel as always, nervous. Had to open it up, so I just wanted to make sure I ain’t mess up. Hit every beat, make sure I was on point. Yeah, that’s what I was worried about.

Lil Wayne’s Nerves Didn’t Hamper His VMAs Performance

“Oh, yeah, I heard about that,” Lil Wayne said with a laugh when Bayless asked about Taylor Swift loving his performance of “Walk This Way” from the front row. “Just to be up there with those legends, I was like ‘What?’ Literally, Skip, as I’m up there and I could hear myself singing ‘Walk This Way’ that was unbelievable. To hear myself singing, and knowing who I’m up there with. No one else was singing the ‘Walk This Way’ part. No one else was singing it. When I heard it was just me, I was like ‘Yeah.’ I owned it, yeah.”

Meanwhile, Tunechi also made sure to keep feeding fans alongside his big shows, even if it was through a feature. He recently treated Nas and Hit-Boy’s sixth collaborative album in three years, Magic 3, to a feature verse on the track “Never Die.” All in all, there seem to be more reasons than ever to celebrate the Young Money mogul these days- and that’s never a bad thing. However, fans were quick to point out that Haddish was being something of a hypocrite. “Remember when Tiffany snapped at a fan who was yelling her name at an event? The hypocrisy to do the same shit, and you’re a celeb who knows how annoying that shit is,” one person wrote on Instagram. They were referring to an incident from the 2022 MLB All-Star Game in Los Angeles. Haddish was seen on camera yelling at a drunk fan named “Adrian” who kept loudly asking her for a photo. The footage quickly viral.

For many people, this is the exact behavior that Haddish was clapping back at the gossip outlets for reporting on. “I don’t get why she’s still invited to anything at this point. 😂 She’s always been cringe,” opined one person. Another commented “I see why Common left her.” “I really want her to STOP….. it’s ALL too much, her, her mouth, her “jokes”, the “I’m rich” shit just STOP it all😂,” lamented a third.
