The MTV Video Music Awards have built quite a legacy: This year’s show will mark the event’s 40th anniversary. Speaking of the 2024 VMAs, when is that going down?

When Will The 2024 MTV VMAs Be Held?

MTV announced today (April 24) that this year’s ceremony will take place on September 10 at New York’s UBS Arena.

In a statement (as Deadline reports), Bruce Gillmer — President of Music, Music Talent, Programming & Events, Paramount and Chief Content Officer, Music, Paramount+ — said, “We’re excited to bring this year’s VMAs to UBS Arena, one of the country’s newest and most cutting-edge venues. Celebrating one of music’s biggest nights with the incredible, robust New York area fans is something we’ve been looking forward to since the moment last year’s show ended.”

New York Governor Kathy Hochul also said, “We are excited to welcome back the MTV Video Music Awards to New York State. From its origins at Radio City Music Hall in 1984 to this September’s event at the UBS Arena, the VMAs continue to captivate millions, showcasing the very best in music video artistry. As we prepare to host this 40th anniversary event, let’s embrace the spirit of creativity and innovation that defines our state’s cultural landscape.”

A specific time for the broadcast has not yet been announced. As Deadline notes, though, the ceremony will air “across MTV’s linear and digital platforms in more than 150 countries and territories.”

This past weekend’s 2023 MTV VMAs were full of surprises, like Madonna’s 34-year-old commercial and supposed beef between Megan Thee Stallion and Justin Timberlake (which was quickly debunked). The most surprising element of the evening for Ice Spice appears to be herself, as she was shocked about how her body looked in a photo she saw.

Recently, Ice Spice shared a photo of herself and Taylor Swift hugging at the VMAs, and in the picture, both artists are shown from the side. Ice Spice was apparently surprised to see how her profile looked as she tweeted, “damn i aint kno i was that thick hold on.” The post has proven to be popular, as it’s been seen over 35 million times on X (formerly known as Twitter).

Ice Spice had a good night at the VMAs. She won the Best New Artist award and had three other nominations: Push Performance Of The Year for “Princess Diana” and two nods in Song Of The Summer, for her and Nicki Minaj’s Barbie movie song “Barbie World” and her and Swift’s “Karma.” Her and Ben Affleck’s new Dunkin’ commercial also debuted during the broadcast.

Megan Thee Stallion’s Morning-After Video Explains Just What Happened With Justin Timberlake At The 2023 MTV VMAs

For a minute, it looked like there was some beef going down at last night’s (September 12) 2023 MTV VMAs (aside from Selena Gomez and Chris Brown). A video of a backstage interaction between Megan Thee Stallion and Justin Timberlake showed Meg pointing her finger and wagging it at Timberlake while she sported a seemingly unhappy facial expression.

It appears things weren’t as they seemed, though. Later, reports surfaced that Timberlake said to Megan, “It’s so nice to meet you,” to which the rapper responded, “No no, this don’t count, this don’t count, we gotta meet proper.”

A video that Meg shared on TikTok this morning seems to further prove that everything is good between Meg and JT, and that the supposed beef between them was just a big misunderstanding. The video — set to Do As Infinity’s “Fukai Mori,” which was previously used as an ending theme for the Inuyasha anime series — shows Meg and Timberlake hanging out backstage, smiling and laughing as they enjoy a friendly conversation.

Meg also included what appears to be an explanation for the video that sparked feud rumors, writing in her post’s caption, “I just talk with my hands lol [raised hand emoji] see ya next time @Justin Timberlake.”

Selena Gomez Couldn’t Help But Make A Face When Hearing A Chris Brown Nomination At The 2023 MTV VMAs

Earlier this year, Chlöe faced (and later addressed) criticism for collaborating with the controversial Chris Brown on her album In Pieces, on the song “How Does It Feel.” Regardless, the collab found some success and landed itself a nomination at last night’s (September 12) 2023 MTV VMAs. That doesn’t mean everybody was happy about it though: As Selena Gomez sat in the Video Music Awards audience, she couldn’t help but make her feelings known.

As the nominees in the Best R&B category were announced, an audience camera was fixed on Selena Gomez (and “Calm Down” collaborator Rema seated next to her). Nominated in that category was “How Does It Feel” and as that was read, Gomez’s demeanor noticeably changed. Before, she had a subtle smile and was holding her hands together up in front of her, as though waiting to applaud. When she heard Brown’s name, though, she put her hands on her lap, looked down, frowned, and made a clear grimace. When Yung Bleu and Nicki Minaj’s “Love In The Way” was announced next, though, Gomez clapped as her smile returned.

SZA’s “Shirt” ended up winning that award, by the way. Also nominated aside from the aforementioned were Alicia Keys’ “Stay” Feat. Lucky Daye; Metro Boomin, The Weeknd, 21 Savage, and Diddy’s “Creepin’ (Remix)”; and Toosii’s “Favorite Song.”

Meanwhile, Gomez and Rema’s “Calm Down” was up for three awards and won one of them, in the Best Afrobeats category. This also isn’t the first time in recent days Gomez has drawn some attention for reacting from the audience.

Doja Cat Goes Almost Topless With Barely-There VMAs Spiderweb Dress

Doja Cat is someone who has been trying their hardest to be provocative as of late. Overall, the artist is looking to go in a direction on her album Scarlet. “Paint The Town Red” is now the number-one song on the Billboard charts which means her new music isn’t exactly “abrasive” or anything like that. Some would say her pop-rap formula has stayed intact. However, no one will know for sure what the full scope of her direction is once the album comes out. For those who don’t know, the release date is September 22nd.

Last night, Doja Cat found herself at the MTV Video Music Awards. While at the awards show, she got to perform a medley of her singles from Scarlet. This happened the same day that she revealed the album’s tracklist. The project is going to consist of zero features, and fans are curious as to how that will play out. As for Doja’s look last night, well, she was almost naked on the red carpet. If you check her Instagram, you will see a Spider-Web-inspired dress that barely covers her breasts.

Demi Lovato, Stray Kids, And More Will Perform At The 2023 Video Music Awards, With More Acts TBA

The MTV Video Music Awards for 2023 are just a few weeks away, as they’ll be hosted at New Jersey’s Prudential Center on September 12. To give those either attending or watching an idea of who will be performing, they’ve unveiled the first round of musical acts.

Demi Lovato will be returning to the VMAs after six years, gearing up for the release of their album, Revamped. The project finds them putting a rock-inspired shift on the biggest hits across their career, complete with modern vocals.

Karol G is on the performance lineup for the first time. The musician is also nominated for three awards, including Artist Of The Year. Stray Kids will also be giving their first performance from the VMAs stage, performing their hit “S-Class” from their latest album, according to Variety. The song was also nominated for Best K-Pop.

Finally, rounding out the first drop of performers is Måneskin, who rose to prominence during the Eurovision Song Contest. The group found mainstream success with their hit “Beggin” and previously won a VMA for Best Alternative. Now, they are returning to promote a new single, “Honey (Are You Coming?).”

MTV has unveiled the highly-anticipated nominations for the 2023 “VMAs,” recognizing artists whose influence and contributions over the past year have reshaped the music industry and sparked global conversations. Taylor Swift leads with eight nominations, eyeing another “Video of the Year” win after her historic triple victory in the same category last year. SZA follows closely with six nominations, joined by Doja Cat, Kim Petras, Miley Cyrus, Nicki Minaj, Olivia Rodrigo, and Sam Smith, each earning five nods. Additionally, BLACKPINK, Diddy, and Shakira receive four nominations each.

This year marks a record number of first-time nominees (35 in total), including Kim Petras with five nominations, Metro Boomin, Rema, and several others with three each, and a range of debut nominees such as Aespa, boygenius, Burna Boy, and more.

Fans can now cast their votes across 15 gender-neutral categories, including the new “Best Afrobeats” category, as well as the prestigious “Video of the Year” and “Artist of the Year” categories. Voting is open on vote.mtv.com until Sept.1st, while “Best New Artist” voting continues until the show on September 12th. Additional nominations for social categories like “Group of the Year” and “Song of Summer” will be disclosed later.

The 2023 “VMAs” will return on September 12th, showcasing music’s biggest stars with electrifying performances, surprises, and an enthusiastic live audience at New Jersey’s renowned Prudential Center.
