Ayra Starr Fends Off “Bad Vibes” On Our New “R&B Season” Playlist Update: Stream

HotNewHipHop‘s R&B Season playlist is back to round up the best R&B-adjacent releases of the week, and as usual, we have a select few but nonetheless captivating cuts to go through. First up is Ayra Starr and Seyi Vibez’s new collaboration “Bad Vibes,” which evokes a lot of tender Afrobeat instrumentation to craft a pretty enveloping and calming cut. In particular, the vocal harmonies on the choruses really help to give this track life amid its tranquil production, and highlight each artist’s individual performance even more. There’s a lot of chemistry on display here, whether it’s between the watery synths and crisp drums or between deep croons and airy, soaring proclamations.

While there are no more collabs on our R&B Season update, Yaya Bey’s new album Ten Fold showcases the versatility and charisma of countless minds in the studio. In particular, we want to shout out the track “career day” for its compelling juxtaposition between blunt lyricism and an easy-going, guitar-backed boom-bap rhythm. “Who you wanna be when you grow up? Hmm, me” is one of many lines here that represent this song’s soft but still confident demeanor, as Bey does a lot with a little vocally. The groove is absolutely locked in here, and the vocal shifts between high and low pitches are a versatile treat.

Speaking of albums, we have a more sultry and nocturnal R&B experience with SAFE’s latest LP, Tell It Like It Is. However, the track “focus / too many” subverts expectations quickly with a moody atmosphere quickly interrupted by distorted hits of percussion, warped vocal effects, and a switch-up into a stark trap beat. The drop hits hard, and SAFE’s coolly boisterous delivery balances out the grittiness with a glamorous sheen. If intoxicating cuts aren’t usually your thing, we’d definitely recommend this record and the whole project to convince you that there’s more common ground than you might assume.

Finally, we have praise for Tink’s new single “Huh” due to its slow build-up from a spotlit vocal performance into minimal percussive dreaminess. While it’s not the most unique cut you’ll find this week, few tracks this week were able to deliver as much passion as this one with so little. Let us know what your favorite R&B Season pick was this week, as well as what else we missed, down in the comments section below. Check out the playlist above and, as always, check back in with HNHH for the latest amazing music drops around the clock.

DJ Akademiks Claims Drake Isn’t Done, Alludes To Kendrick Lamar Beef

DJ Akademiks’ Mother’s Day stream on Sunday (May 12) has a lot of people thinking that the Kendrick Lamar and Drake beef isn’t as over as people think. While he remarked that K.Dot has more songs in the vault, more likely than not, he also theorized that there’s probably nothing that will drop in the very near future. However, the media personality did indicate that Drizzy is making a return, and that he will probably keep dissing his rival, presumably through subliminals or passing mentions based on his explanation. What Ak really seems to be getting at is that both sides have music planned for the future, but that any bad blood won’t manifest itself via a back-and-forth battle like the one we just witnessed.

Furthermore, this is all speculative and, from DJ Akademiks’ viewpoint, mere guesses based on what little we know and what the artists themselves have indicated. Drake already seemed to step out of the beef with his latest IG Story post, and rumors of a new Kendrick Lamar album floated around the Internet before the 6ix God mentioned them on “The Heart Part 6.” Most importantly for some obsessive fans, the streamer also said that both MCs probably lied throughout their diss tracks. As for the Toronto superstar, he likely lied about Dave Free fathering Mr. Morale’s kid, and the Compton lyricist presumably and likely lied about The Boy’s secret kid(s?), according to Ak and his previous stances on these family matters.

DJ Akademiks Speaks On The Drake & Kendrick Lamar Battle

Meanwhile, other rap media figures like Charlamagne Tha God still see a way forward for Drake if he wants to win this particular battle. But for a lot of fans, the ink is dry either way, and more escalation would only beat folks over the head way more than they wanted. Kendrick Lamar has seemingly claimed the crown, but a lot of the points that they made against each other probably will still manifest in their careers. The OVO mogul will still be a commercial juggernaut, and the pgLang creative will still receive heaps of acclaim for his work.

More Ak Clips About The Rap Beef

But we want to know what you think: where do you see this beef going? Will we see more antics from Drake and Kendrick Lamar fans in their efforts to find the truth and crown an objective winner? Let us know whatever you think down in the comments section below. Just know that your take could age like milk in a matter of days, and that we’re in for a long summer if DJ Akademiks is anywhere near in the right.

Drake Seems To Wave The White Flag With New Instagram Story Post

Well, after almost two months of build-up, a full week of warfare, and about 11 years of anticipation, it seems like the Kendrick Lamar and Drake beef is over. Moreover, the latter just posted the following message on his Instagram Story, captioning a painting of a lone samurai against an army with: “Good times. Summer vibes up next.” Of course, this is a pretty vague message, although the painting itself seems to reference the “20v1” that The Boy rapped about on “Push Ups” when much of the industry went against him. But what about this beef was exactly “good times,” and what does he mean by “summer vibes”?

According to some Drake fans who commented under the post below, they’re expecting some more bangers from him in the summertime to get back on schedule, prove his hit-making ability, and knock that “Not Like Us” diss track off the charts. They believe he won the battle by dropping “The Heart Part 6,” which Kendrick Lamar hasn’t responded to at press time. No matter where you fall on that debate, it’s fair to say that any victory was not just a close call, but a pretty dark one considering the allegations they levied at each other. Also, things got really serious in the Toronto superstar’s personal life in ways that aren’t directly connected to the beef, but surely made things more stressful.

Drake’s Latest Instagram Story

Furthermore, it’s fair to say that both Drake and Kendrick Lamar’s next moves will carry a different sort of weight compared to the usual excitement around their drops. Fans will likely reach across the galaxy for subliminal diss theories, rejoice when Aubrey Graham makes a hit song, and unpack any elusive statement from Mr. Morale. They both gained incredible commercial success and record-breaking achievements as a result of their battle. At least for now, and in the traditional rap battle sense, it seems like things are done.

Meanwhile, us fans are debating what the best song and diss was out of all of this, as well as whether Drake or Kendrick Lamar came out on top. What would be your picks for these debates? Whatever the case, let us know in the comments section down below. We’ll have to wait and see how this event evolves in contemporary hip-hop history, and whether there is an epilogue to this story.

Kendrick Lamar & Drake End The Beef On Our New “Fire Emoji” Playlist Update: Stream

Another week, another Fire Emoji playlist update rounding up the best of the best this week had to offer as far as new hip-hop releases. Just like last week, we have a whole lot to talk about concerning the Drake and Kendrick Lamar beef, but you’ve probably already heard these. Regardless, each and every one of these is (debatably) killer, in chronological order of release: “Family Matters,” “Meet The Grahams,” and “Not Like Us,” plus the non-streaming “The Heart Part 6.” It was a show-stopping battle that asked more pressing questions than it answered about rap culture and the music industry, but an impressive showing nonetheless.

Elsewhere on Fire Emoji, this beef held even more material, as The Game hopped in with a “Freeway’s Revenge” diss against Rick Ross that was seemingly exacerbated by their opposing sides in that Drake and Kendrick Lamar feud. But other than all that, we have some big albums to talk about, including the much-anticipated Almighty So 2 from Chief Keef. If you’re looking for a solid taster for the project, we’d recommend you check out “Grape Trees” with Sexyy Red. Also, we have a brand-new album from Conway The Machine titled Slant Face Killah, on which “Mutty” with Stove God Cooks is a particularly grimy and and enveloping cut.

As if that wasn’t enough material for Fire Emoji, the albums just keep on coming. The title track on Gunna’s new LP One Of Wun (plus “neck on a yacht”) should indicate just how woozy, intoxicating, and effortlessly engaging that tracklist can be. What’s more is that we also have the return of one of the game’s greatest with the new Ghostface Killah project, Set The Tone (Guns & Roses). “No Face” with Kanye West is a dusty throwback highlight with a lot of chemistry between both MCs.

Meanwhile, we wanted to show love to some singles this week, as well. There’s Future and Tee Grizzley’s hard-hitting “Swear To God,” Ice Spice’s Sean Paul-sampling “Gimme A Light,” Kodak Black’s introspective “Dis Time,” and Key Glock’s moody but murderous “The Greatest.” Let us know what your favorite Fire Emoji pick was this week, as well as what else we missed, down in the comments section below. Jim Jones Will Not Face Charges After Viral Bloody Escalator Debacle

Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport turned into a boxing ring a few nights ago, as Jim Jones two other men settled their differences. Punches were thrown on an escalator after deboarding and not much context was known at the time. All we were able to deduce was that the Harlem, New York rapper was “minding my business and defend[ing] myself.” However, over the following days, authorities were able to come to a conclusion about how to proceed. According to multiple sources, including AllHipHop, Jim Jones will not be facing any charges. The 47-year-old’s explanation that he provided to the police played a big role in helping him avoid any legal action.

Security footage also aided his case, as this brawl between the three gentlemen started while they were getting off the plane. Jones said it began when one of the assailants, James Dos Santos, pushed him after he removed his belongings from the overhead compartment before the plane stopped. The rapper reportedly told the cops that Dos Santos apologized after Jones gave him a fair warning about shoving him. That is seemingly when the second attacker, Alexander Lekht, got involved. He was shouting at Jones, presumably for how he handled Mr. Dos Santos.

Jim Jones Is Scot Free

It was not enough to get a reaction out of Jones, so Lekht continued to antagonize him up until they got on the same escalator. When they began their descent, that is when madness ensued. Lekht was the one who sustained the most battle scars, leaving to treat his bloody face at the hospital. Jones suffered some facial bruising, but nothing more. The 94-year-old man, James Jackson, who took a tumble after getting knocked down while the brawl was happening, is doing fine. He went to the hospital as well for leg pain. From what was revealed to us, it seems that neither Dos Santos, nor Lekht were hit with any charges. Finally, both men did not want to press charges against Jones.

What are your thoughts on Jim Jones not receiving any charges following the Miami airport brawl? Do you think he should have faced something, why or why not? Are you surprised that the men who started the fight did not get hit with anything? We would like to hear what you have to say, so be sure to leave your takes in the comments section. Additionally, always keep it locked in with HNHH for all of the latest news surrounding Jim Jones. Finally, stay with us for everything else going on in the music world.

4batz & Rapsody Take A Big Leap On Our New “R&B Season” Playlist Update: Stream

The hip-hop war is all the rage now, but we all need some time to cool off, relax, and get a little more in tune with some more easy-going tunes. Moreover, we have a new R&B Season playlist update to share with you rounding up the best of the best genre-adjacent releases this week. When it comes to big drops, none were more anticipated than 4batz’s debut project, u made me a st4r, which represents his rapid skyrocket up the up-and-coming artist pipeline. There are highlights throughout, with a particularly catchy and smoky listen being “act v: there goes another vase.”

Elsewhere, we also had Rapsody tapping into her R&B bag with the Erykah Badu-assisted cut, “3:AM.” However, she lets Badu take care of the singing and melodic and harmonic prettiness over a crisp, sax-backed, and chill beat that would be fitting for a variety of the genre’s hits. The North Carolina MC goes into some calm but still impactful verses and flows, along with some introspective themes of accepting insecurities and reflecting that acknowledgement and process with those closest to you.

Another big collaboration that dropped this week features two crooners teaming up for a sultry but still vibe-heavy and hard-hitting cut. Chris Brown and J. Valentine trade vocal runs on “UnLonely,” pairing simple piano leads with a clap-based trap beat and flipping flows with ease. The contrast on this track doesn’t really highlight anything unique about it, but it does provide an interesting clash between the more tender elements and the more hype ones. In other words, it’s exactly the kind of balance that a lot of R&B or rap-related releases achieve these days in tandem with one another, which is always great to see.

Finally, we wanted to shout out the new Coco Jones track, “Here We Go (Uh Oh)” for its beautiful homage to older soul styles. But the only thing that outshines the lush instrumental here is Coco’s gorgeous vocal performance, another guaranteed win. Let us know what your favorite R&B Season pick was this week, as well as what else we missed, down in the comments section below. Check the playlist out above and, as always, stick around on HNHH for the latest great music drops around the clock.

Kendrick Lamar & Drake’s Feud Takes Over Our New “Fire Emoji” Playlist Update: Stream

Well… pretty chill week for hip-hop, right? We know that there’s a massive cloud over the genre right now, but don’t forget about all of the other excellent music drops that released in the past seven days, which we’ve rounded up on our new Fire Emoji playlist update. On it, you’ll find Kendrick Lamar’s Drake diss, “euphoria,” but at this point, you’d be missing most of the story. “6:16 In LA,” “Family Matters,” a “Buried Alive” parody mocking K.Dot, and “Meet The Grahams” released since, and potentially false claims and savagery aside, they are downright ugly. A sad ending (or is it?) to what many fans hoped would be an art-centric battle.

Regardless, there’s plenty of great music to champion instead on Fire Emoji, such as the new Yeat and Don Toliver collab, “Heavy stunts.” In contrast to another single from the 2093 creative that dropped alongside it, “King tonka,” this one melds their psychedelic and woozy styles in a simple, minimal, but nevertheless engaging cut. There was another hazy track this week, albeit a much cleaner and more crips offering, from Gunna titled “Whatsapp (Wassam),” building up to his soon-to-come album. As almost always, Wunna’s flows are pretty slick here, and the beat here cushions his delivery with ease.

Moving onto more aggressive fare on Fire Emoji, we also wanted to highlight the new Moneybagg Yo single, “TRYNA MAKE SURE.” It’s a pretty clear-cut example of Memphis griminess, with sharp snares and occasional bell gongs keeping his flows in check. Also, we have a collaboration between Jasiah, Denzel Curry, and Meechy Darko, the airy but nonetheless hard-hitting “5 Days.” It creates a pretty interesting contrast between heavy percussion, harsh vocal deliveries and flows, and a breezy piano melody.

For the more old-school heads out there, you’ve probably already gone wild over the new Ghostface Killah and Nas collab, “Scar Tissue.” Finally, Chance the Rapper’s new “Buried Alive” track provides enveloping rhyme schemes and a lot of introspection to make for a very passionate offering. Let us know down in the comments below what your favorite Fire Emoji pick was this week, as well as what else we missed. Check the playlist out above and, as always, check back in with HNHH for the latest great music drops around the clock.

PARTYNEXTDOOR Is “4” The Fans On Our New “R&B Season” Playlist Update: Stream

HNHH‘s R&B Season playlist is back to round up the best releases from the various styles adjacent to the genre that came out this week, and there’s a big one to speak on right away. Moreover, PARTYNEXTDOOR finally delivered on all the hype and dropped his long-awaited fourth studio album PARTYNEXTDOOR 4 (P4). Not only does the Toronto artist deliver plenty of his trademark style on this full-length, but he also taps into sounds that he’s not immediately associated with, such as the breezy African-inspired rhythms on “F o r C e r t a i n.” If you want that classic PND sound, though, look no further than cuts like “N o C h i l l,” and you’ll be right back in that zone again.

Elsewhere on R&B Season, we have another sultry and minimal single from Normani titled “1:59,” and it features none other than Gunna for a pretty interesting crossover. Through some simple guitar licks, building vocal harmonies, stark percussion, and atmospheric effects, it’s able to keep things woozy while still having a solid melodic center. As for the College Park MC, his voice actually goes even harder than his collaborator on this cut when it comes to the passion and the strain in his voice. It’s a nice zone to see him in, especially for those looking for him to at least try to switch it up.

However, if you’re looking for more of that Afro-soul sound, there’s another highlight on R&B Season this week. Tems came through with an interpolation of Seyi Sodimu’s 1997 classic “Love Me JeJe,” which is as wondrous and welcoming as it is loosely chilled-out. Across much of the Nigerian singer’s catalog, a lot of her strengths owe themselves to her strong vocal chops, charismatic performances, and her ability to build out a tune. Needless to say, these are all elements that keep on giving.

Finally, we wanted to shout out the tender, bubbly, and crisp collab between Chenayder and MAVI, “Colors.” This is easily among the jazziest and most head-bobbing picks this week thanks to a warm vocal performance from the former and a killer verse from the latter. Let us know what your favorite R&B Season cut was this week, as well as what else we missed, down in the comments below. Check out the playlist above and, as always, log back into HNHH for more amazing music drops around the clock.

Rihanna Teases New Album, Says It’ll Be “Amazing”

Fans have been waiting for new music from Rihanna for what feels like forever, but fortunately, they may not have to wait too much longer. The Fenty Beauty founder hosted a launch party this Friday for the brand’s new Soft’lit Foundation, where she gave Extra an exciting update on her upcoming album. The project will follow her 2016 LP Anti, and according to her, there’s a good reason she’s waited this long.

RiRi told the outlet that she’s determined to make sure her next project is flawless. Luckily, it seems as though she has high hopes. “It’s gonna be amazing,” she said of upcoming music. “It has to be — that is the only reason it’s not out yet. If I’m not feeling it and I’m not feeling like it represents the evolution, the time I spent away … There should be a show of growth, right?”

“I want to play, and I feel like music is a playground, and I want to have fun with it and show truly where I am at,” she also added. As for any potential collabs listeners can expect, she says she’s only willing to team up with another artist if it’s “very intentional. I’ll know when I have the record.”

One fellow hitmaker fans already know to be working on the album is none other than the father of Rihanna’s children, ASAP Rocky. She told Entertainment Tonight this month that they struggled to decide which of the songs each of them would claim, calling them all “so good.” What do you think of Rihanna’s latest update on her anxiously awaited upcoming album?
