HBO And The Creator Of ‘Euphoria’ Are Teaming With The Weeknd For A Show Taking On The Music Industry And Cults

Musicians haven’t always had a great history crossing into movies and TV. Not everyone can be an Oscar-nominated, Golden Globe-winning thespian like Lady Gaga. Perhaps that’s why The Weeknd has been taking baby steps. He played himself, briefly, in Uncut Gems. But now he’s got his own HBO show, where he’ll play someone arguably more magnetic than a pop star: a cult leader.

As per The Hollywood Reporter, the singer and subject of a popular Daniel Craig meme is co-creator and star of The Idol, a forthcoming HBO show co-starring Lily Rose-Depp, daughter of Johnny. THR describes the premise like this:

In development since the summer, The Idol is set against the backdrop of the music industry in Los Angeles. It centers on a self-help guru and leader of a modern-day cult (The Weeknd) who develops a complicated relationship with an up-and-coming pop singer (Depp).

The Weeknd is already working with one of HBO’s rivals, being the subject of Showtime’s The Show, which will look at his spectacular mid-pandemic Super Bowl show from this past January. Joining him on The Idol will be co-creators Reza Fahim, his producing partner, as well as Euphoria creator Sam Levinson, who also helmed the Netflix drama Malcolm & Marie. The show’s six episodes will all be directed by Amy Seimetz, the actress and director, whose credits include The Girlfriend Experience, Atlanta, and the acclaimed film She Dies Tomorrow.

Post Malone And The Weeknd Face Off In A Bloody Shootout In Their ‘One Right Now’ Video

Post Malone and The Weeknd have perhaps been the two most successful artists on the charts over the past few years, and they recently joined forces for a new single, “One Right Now.” Their collaboration is doing well, too, as it just debuted at No. 6 on this week’s Billboard Hot 100 chart. The song wasn’t originally released with a video to accompany it, but now they’ve gone ahead and given the song a proper visual.

The clip starts with The Weeknd, arm in a sling, entering Posty’s lair, guns blazing as he shoots a bunch of henchmen and throws a grenade to take care of that first wave. Meanwhile, Malone arms himself and also sends some bullets flying, into some Weeknd lookalikes. After more miscellaneous gunfire, the two meet up and face off, ending the video by each firing fatal shots into each other’s foreheads.

“One Right Now” is Malone’s first top-10 song in a couple years, as his previous one, the Ozzy Osbourne- and Travis Scott-featuring “Take What You Want,” dropped around this time in 2019. As for The Weeknd, his most recent top-10 was his Ye (fka Kanye West) and Lil Baby collab “Hurricane.”

Watch Rosalía And The Weeknd Link Up In The Deadly ‘La Fama’ Video

After dropping a teaser trailer last week for “La Fama,” Rosalía and The Weeknd have delivered on their promise in spades. The first song off of Rosalía’s Motomami, due out in 2022, “La Fama” arrives with a video that’s both deadly and metaphoric.

“Good evening ladies and gentlemen,” actor and taco entrepreneur Danny Trejo says to an opulent club crowd as the video begins. “I want to introduce the following number. But I must warn you, she’s not for everyone. She will pierce your heart and she will be your only obsession! So get ready for some heat… La Fama!”

But this is no ordinary club, this is a decadent cabaret where people snort diamonds and sip gemstone martinis. Rosalía is the titular “La Fama” singing and dancing seductively and setting her crosshairs on The Weeknd, sitting front and center. His high-pitched voice joins her in Spanish as he rises to heed her siren call. They get closer and closer, and just as their lips are about to meet, she kills him.

“I wanted to write, in my own way, a bachata with a little story around ambition,” Rosalía said in a statement. “Taking as a reference the lyrics of Ruben Blades or Patti Smith and the songs of Aventura, I ended up writing a story of romance with fame.”

The video and the song’s lyrics are definitely symbolic of an obsession with stardom, something that both Rosalía and the Weeknd have experienced a lot of. It’s a cautionary tale to the endless thirst traps surrounding the entertainment industry. And as the lights dim, Rosalía poses for applause while The Weekend lays lifeless and Trejo punctuates what we just witnessed: “Don’t forget, be careful what you wish for!”

Rosalía And The Weeknd Preview Their Collaboration ‘La Fama’ With A Trailer Featuring Danny Trejo

The Weeknd is in a collaborative mood right now. In October, he linked up with Swedish House Mafia for “Moth To A Flame” and just a few days ago, he and Post Malone dropped “One Right Now.” Now, he has yet another joint effort on the way, and this time, he teaming up with a familiar face in Rosalía, who he recruited for a remix of “Blinding Lights” in late 2020. This time, the two are meeting up on “La Fama,” a new song that’s set for release this Thursday, November 11.

A brief trailer for the song’s video was shared today, and in it, Rosalía sings and dances in a club while The Weeknd looks on and the pair eventually capture each other’s attention. Furthermore, Danny Trejo makes an appearance in the clip, playing the role of an MC of sorts and introducing Rosalía by exclaiming, “So get ready for some heat: La Fama!”

As for the song itself, it has a Latin-influenced beat and sees The Weeknd singing in Spanish, as he did on Maluma’s “Hawái” remix that was released almost exactly a year ago today.

Post Malone And The Weeknd Couldn’t Care Less About Their Ex’s Feelings On ‘One Right Now’

Post Malone and The Weeknd both have albums in the works that their respective fan bases are waiting patiently for. Malone’s upcoming effort is a follow-up to his 2018 chart-topping album Hollywood’s Bleeding while The Weeknd’s own is one that will mark a quick return from last year’s After Hours. As the wait continues for both projects, Posty and The Weeknd join forces for their new song, “One Right Now.” The track flaunts off their nonchalant sides as they brush off their ex’s feelings and show how they’ve moved on to better.

The track marks Post Malone’s second release of the year after he dropped “Motley Crew” earlier this year. It came with a racetrack-themed video that saw him burning rubber and turning up with fellow musicians like Big Sean, Ty Dolla Sign, French Montana, Tyga, and more. Back in April, Post’s manager Dre London hinted that the singer may have two projects on the way for fans. “This that smile while on FaceTime with @postmalone agreeing that the world deserves 2 Posty projects out this year!” London wrote in the caption of an April 2021 Instagram post. “Discussing dates to drop the 1st one sooner than u think! I won’t tell u the title name just yet maybe next week.” We’ve yet to receive word on the upcoming releases.

As for The Weeknd, his upcoming sixth album is very close to arriving. “Album is complete,” he said during an October 4 episode of his Apple Music radio show Memento Mori. “Only thing missing is a couple characters that are key to the narrative. Some people that are near and dear to me, some people that inspired my life as a child, and some that inspire me now. More to come in the following months.”

You can listen to the new song in the video above.

The Weeknd And Post Malone Are Linking Up For A New Song That’s Apparently Coming This Week

Over the past few years, The Weeknd and Post Malone have been two of the most dominant figures in music. In fact, The Weeknd’s “Blinding Lights” became the song with the most weeks ever spent in the top 10 of the Billboard Hot 100 chart last year, beating the previous record holder, Malone’s “Circles.” Now, the two industry titans are getting ready to team up on what is sure to be a hit.

Yesterday, they both shared a brief teaser of a new song. Dre London, Malone’s manager, also shared the clip and offered more info, revealing the track is called “One Right Now.” He wrote on Instagram, “What I couldn’t wait to tell the [world] This Friday!! I’m excited for u to finally here what I been talking about!! @postmalone & @theweeknd ‘One Right Now’ #DreVision in full effect!! #Shutdown Ting!!! Crazy Movie Video comes next week!!!”

If the song ends up being a hit, it will be Malone’s first in a while, relatively speaking. His last top-10 single was the Ozzy Osbourne- and Travis Scott-featuring “Take What You Want,” which peaked at No. 8 in 2019. Before that, it was the chart-topping “Circles.” As for The Weeknd, his latest single, “Take My Breath,” was successful, achieving a peak at No. 6.

Rihanna, The Weeknd, And Cardi B Had Some Of Music’s Best Halloween Costumes For 2021

Musicians are creative folks who have costume budgets that let them go beyond Spirit Halloween’s offerings, so they tend to really show up with killer looks during spooky season. This year was more of the same on that front, as a lot of the world’s favorite artists delivered some Halloween costume excellence in 2021.

The Weeknd is no stranger to prosthetic make-up, as he proved in his “Save Your Tears” video, and he was at it again this weekend with an impressive Don Corleone from The Godfather look.

Meanwhile, Rihanna absolutely nailed her Gunna outfit by emulating a classic fit.

The newly engaged Travis Barker and Kourtney Kardashian also came through with a couple of couples looks. Over the weekend, they paid tribute to the movie True Romance and a few days ago, they dressed up as Sid Vicious and Nancy Spungen.

Anderson .Paak went hard, too, sharing photos of himself as Silk Sonic cohort Bruno Mars, Prince, and Stevie Wonder.

Meanwhile, Taylor Swift has puts Cats behind her and has moved on to being a squirrel.

Charli XCX and Cardi B were on the same page, as they both embodied Morticia Addams from The Addams Family.

Finally, this one doesn’t really count, but Phoebe Bridgers has been dressing as a skeleton for well over a year.

Angelina Jolie Expertly Avoided A Reporter’s Question About Her Relationship With The Weekend

Rumors have been swirling around The Weeknd and Angelina Jolie ever since the pair were spotted out at dinner together in Los Angeles. So even though the actress is currently engaged in a round of press interviews to promote her role in the new Marvel movie, The Eternals, you had to know an enterprising young journalist was going to try to get an answer out of her about Abel Tesfaye. An E! News reporter for the Daily Pop had to ask — “Now I have to know, Angelina, because your kids are at the age where they have opinions, so I have to know,” he began. “Were they more excited that you were in The Eternals, or that you are friends with The Weeknd?”

For her part, Jolie dodged the question like the professional she is, not even dropping a hint about Abel and focusing entirely on the movie. “They’re very excited about this film, if that’s what you’re asking,” she responded coyly. But, what she couldn’t hide was a pretty big smile, and a grin and fellow star Salma Hayek who was part of the press blitz alongside Jolie. It’s not quite a hint, but maybe it’s something? The Weeknd won’t stop teasing a new era, so maybe we’ll get more answers out of him in coming weeks.
