Top Dawg Entertainment (TDE) may be the best label in all of hip-hop/R&B. However, they are also the most elusive collective as well. For example, ScHoolboy Q has not dropped an album since 2019. Up until 2022, we had not heard from Ab-Soul in six years. Kendrick Lamar waited five years before returning in 2022 with Mr. Morale & The Big Steppers. SiR is part of that bunch as well.

For the Inglewood, California singer, it has been nearly four years since we got his last full-length record, Chasing Summer. But, that drought appears to be coming to an end for SiR as well. Just about 24 hours ago, the 37-year-old announced that his next project is done and that he will be going on tour. In that same message, he revealed that a new song would be dropping.

UMI Releases New Ep “Talking To The Wind” That Reflects On A Unique Time In Her Career

It has been quite some time since HNHH has talked about Seattle, Washington-bred R&B/Soul artist UMI. A lot has happened over the past year or so for the 24-year-old singer. Vulture recently put out a feature piece the day she came through with her brand-new EP, talking to the wind. It is a four-track offering that had half of its songs released months before. Those two were “happy im” and “why dont we go.” UMI is not the most active name in the space, at least in the past couple of years.

But, as we mentioned, she has gone through quite a bit of turmoil. In her particular case, it has to do with the falling out with her now-former RCA-affiliated label, Keep Cool Records. This new ep is UMI’s first release since leaving after it was her dream in high school to join it. In her conversation with Vulture, she gave her reasoning as to why it was time.

“I wanted to leave because I knew it wasn’t serving me anymore. I didn’t feel like there was any excitement at my label for me.” However, even though the label was ahead of UMI’s schedule and it took a chunk out of her, it was the right thing for her career. “My ego definitely was like, ‘F*** you, you’re gonna drop me?’ And then I was like, UMI, you wanted to leave and you’ve been hinting at that for a while, so why are you mad?” Furthermore, she explained the meaning of the title. “The EP was made during that unknown time. When I felt lost during that process, I spent so much time outside letting the wind just touch me and heal me. Who Created Trap Soul? Twitter Debates Drake, Bryson Tiller, Or Kirko Bangz

The latest Twitter debate in the rap and R&B world is in: who created trap soul? Moreover, three answers seemed to dominate discussion, those being Drake, Bryson Tiller, and of course Kirko Bangz. In fact, a repost of the latter’s 2011 hit “Drank in My Cup,” claiming that it “invented” trap soul, is what started this whole discussion in the first place. While many pointed to Bangz as an originator, some championed Drizzy for innovating in the style with So Far Gone and only making it more defined as his career went on. Still, a lot of people could easily claim the title, too. After all, Tiller did name his breakout album after the sub-genre, which if you’ve never heard of before, is pretty self-explanatory.

Despite those popular picks, many other names came up in conversation. One was, surprisingly, Tory Lanez, which is valid even if he’s more known for his legal troubles than his music nowadays. Another obvious contender for the crown is Future, who might just be one of the most influential artists across all genres. Since OVO was already on people’s minds, many pointed to PARTYNEXTDOOR as an important figure in the movement, as well.

The Tweet That Sparked Discussion

Regardless of your take on its originator, it’s clear that all of these artists either owe their sound to the movement or helped innovate it for even wider influence. Also, it creates an interesting debate on what elements of a career truly mark someone “creating” a genre. Kirko Bangz might have been the first to do it, from what many believe. Drake’s been probably the most popular to do so, but he’s played with so many other genres and influences, too. Is sticking to that sound and that sound only what makes you an innovator, or is it owed to pushing it to its highest commercial peaks?

Bobby Caldwell, “What You Won’t Do For Love” Soul Singer, Passes Away At 71

Even if you don’t recognize his name, chances are you’ve heard a Bobby Caldwell classic. The singer is one of the most celebrated voices in the industry, although many are surprised to see that a white man was belting out those hits. Sadly, the singer’s wife, Mary Caldwell, shared that Bobby passed away after years of struggling with health conditions. He was 71. Mary shared the unfortunate news on social media.

“Bobby passed away here at home,” she wrote. “I held him tight in my arms as he left us. I am forever heartbroken. Thanks to all of you for your many prayers over the years. He had been ‘FLOXED,’ it took his health over the last 6 years and 2 months. Rest with God, my Love. -Mary Caldwell.” By “floxed,” Mary meant that her husband developed an adverse reaction to the antibiotic fluoroquinolone. People have begun flooding the internet with tributes and condolences as Caldwell’s music transcended genres and generations.

Remembering Bobby Caldwell

One of Bobby Caldwell’s most recognizable classics is “What You Won’t Do For Love.” The track has been chopped and screwed several times, especially within Hip Hop and R&B. Tupac Shakur’s “Do For Love” famously sampled the hit, as did Aaliyah in “Age Ain’t Nothin’ But a Number.” Other artists like Snoh Aalegra and Boyz II Men also delivered covers; the song remains a Caldwell favorite. Additionally, many will recognize Caldwell’s “My Flame” as the core sample of The Notorious B.I.G. and 112’s hit, “Sky’s the Limit.” Caldwell’s “Open Your Eyes” was also tapped by Common for “The Light” as well as Kendrick Lamar and BJ the Chicago Kid in “R.O.T.C. (Interlude).”

Throughout his career, the Soul singer delivered nearly 20 albums, both solo full lengths and compilations. A joke that followed Caldwell was that many listeners initially thought he was a Black man and were surprised to see he certainly wasn’t. However, it didn’t take away from the R&B singer’s talents, and fans worldwide applauded his releases and contributions to Soul. Fetty Wap Drops “Sweet Yamz” Remix With Ronald Isley & Charlie Wilson

One of the year’s last big viral hits has gotten yet another remix. Fetty Wap recruited soul legend Ronald Isley and Charlie Wilson for another remix of “Sweet Yamz.” While the last one featured Wiz Khalifa, this one is supercharged with incredible soul harmonies and vocal runs. Moreover, having such superstars on the remix helps accentuate the song’s vintage tone and instrumentation. It sounds like an ’80s-tinged soul track with some impassioned ad-libs here and there to give it extra energy.

These new versions of “Sweet Yamz” definitely feed into that positivity. It’s a lustful, urgent, yet charming and fun song whose vitality is no surprise. Moreover, the chorus melody is incredibly catchy, and the lyrics are simple enough to get stuck in your head. Meanwhile, the sheer vocal power on display on this song is quite impressive. The Jersey rapper switches between high and low registers with ease, and his potent voice conveys a lot of emotion. Also, this is his first solo material since 2021’s “First Day Out.”

Although Wap does great here, Wilson’s dominant screams and runs elevate the chorus. In addition, he gets cheeky in his verses, with some food references to convey his hunger for his partner. However, Ronald Isley steals the show at the very end, partly because he sounds eerily similar to Don Toliver (or rather, Don sounds like Isley). His higher register makes for a more animated performances, and his food references are even funnier and more outlandish.

Additionally, these hot songs come amid a tough legal battle for Fetty Wap as he’s incarcerated on drug charges. Last October, he spoke from jail and said that he was keeping his head high despite the controversy.
