Earl Sweatshirt recently hosted an almost complete Odd Future reunion for the Los Angeles show of his Doris ten-year anniversary trek. Moreover, he also performed in Chicago and New York, and has another show in London coming up on Friday (August 25). Overall, it was quite the tender, nostalgic, and downright heartwarming display for old-school OFWGKTA fans and post-collective Earl fans alike. Not only could the Chicago-born and California-raised MC look back on his career, but he also celebrated his journey with the crew he started with. However, in addition to Hodgy and Left Brain, there was one face from the group whose absence people hyper-fixated on: the ever-elusive Frank Ocean.

The R&B star being off the radar is a law of physics at this point, and doesn’t necessarily have to fix that if it’s what he prefers as an artist and individual. Regardless, the rest of Odd Future’s alumni is aware of this, and Earl Sweatshirt decided to play on that in the cruelest but funniest way possible. During his Doris shows, the 29-year-old has continually teased Frank Ocean’s guest appearance for the track “Sunday,” which he appears on. Whether it’s saying “We’ll get him next time,” fake-announcing him, or bringing out another person entirely, Earl hasn’t forgotten his comedic chops from the “Loiter Squad” days.

Still, the master MC said that he wants to work something out for a future show, so not all hope is lot. What’s more is that one online user started a rumor that Earl asked fans to put their phones away and then brought Frank out to perform “Super Rich Kids” at one of the shows, but that’s unverified. Moreover, the Charlotte MC recently sat down for a conversation with Gillie Da Kid and Wallo267 on the Million Dollaz Worth Of Game podcast. In it, Baby spoke on his early shows, the grind that he would dedicate himself to constantly, and their effect on him as an artist. Furthermore, it speaks to the impact of those first hundred performances and the lasting context that it provided him with.

“I done paid my dues, bro,” DaBaby began his remarks to Gillie and Wallo. “I done performed at hole in the wall s**ts and all that. I got my documentary coming, too. But, yeah, it’ll have s**t in there where you see me performing for three people. That’s why even, you know, when s**t go left or I go through a little slump and s**t, motherf***ers think I’m one of these n***as who, like, entitled to instant gratification.

DaBaby Reflects On His Early Days

“Just entitled to a bunch of goddamn smiles and kisses and… N***a, f**k no,” DaBaby continued. “I do this s**t, like, I do this s**t. I done performed probably about a hundred times for less than goddamn a hundred people. You see what I’m saying? Probably more than a hundred times, facts. I ain’t have no voice. After every show, I ain’t have no voice the next day. I’m running around [raspy voice] ‘talking like this’ and s**t. N***as thinking I’m sick. I’m like, ‘Nah, n***a, I just done left it all on the floor last night.’ You know what I mean? I been jumping off that b***h, jumping off the stage.”

Jadakiss Says He Still Gets Anxious About Performing

Jadakiss is opening up in interviews recently, talking about what it’s like to get up on stage after 30 years. On Hot 97‘s GOAT Talk with DJ Enuff last Wednesday, the rapper admitted to suffering from anxiety before any live performance, despite the number of shows he’s done in his career. “Facts. Every show, there’s some butterflies before you gotta go out there,” he said to DJ Enuff. This nervousness is unbiased on which stage, what the show’s caliber is, or which city Jada is touring.

DJ Enuff replied that this was a testament to how much he cares about rap, to which Jadakiss agreed. Even though this is how he feels internally every time he’s up there, he performs like it’s his last show. The dedication to his craft is what keeps Jada going. That, and the love he has for the up-and-comers entering the rap industry. (Unless they’re trying to get fights started… then he doesn’t enjoy the pageantry.)

Jadakiss’ Butterflies & The Young Guns

Jadakiss knows other young rappers must feel similarly. He recently gave some props to Bay Area rapper Symba for his lyrical range and current hot streak. The two performers embraced backstage at a 2023 BET Awards event this past weekend. Video of the encounter went viral, with Jada talking Symba up over and over. Cultural icons like LeBron James and Busta Rhymes commented on the social media post, showering praise for both the old guard and the young bucks of rap.

Jadakiss is doing plenty of talk show appearances these days, giving his take on everything from rap beef to industry history.
