Pusha T Reveals What Went Down With His Madlib-Produced Album

Just a couple of days ago, Pusha T released his long-awaited fourth album It’s Almost Dry. It’s a 12-track effort filled with his trademark cocaine bars backed by appearances from Kanye West, Jay-Z, Pharrell, Kid Cudi, Lil Uzi Vert, Nigo, Labrinth, and Malice. The project was also heavily produced by Kanye West and Pharrell with additional help from Labrinth, 88-Keys, BoogzDaBeast, and more. So far, It’s Almost Dry has been met with favorable reviews from listeners as it appears that Pusha has elevated his game since his 2018 album Daytona.

The arrival of It’s Almost Dry has also made some question the whereabouts of Pusha’s Madlib-produced album which he’s teased on a few occasions. During the inaugural episode of Amp’s It’s Almost Dry Radio with Idea Generation’s Noah Callahan-Bever and his longtime manager Steven Victor, Pusha gave an honest answer about that project.

“I was definitely going to work with Madlib,” he said according to Complex. “I got some beats and they were actually chops from him. I just think he’s really dope at finding ill sounds and ill chops, and things of that nature.” He added, “But at the same time, it was feeling like a beat tape situation. I felt like to step it up I had to be produced — to step it up from Daytona.”

Pusha continued, “When you think about Daytona, it’s just beats and hard raps. I wasn’t produced. The structure of Kanye West you know, taking these things out or whatever the case may be. Honestly, it was just that. It’s Almost Dry is an exercise, definitely on the Pharrell side, in being produced.”

Maybe Pusha and Madlib can get on the same page at some point in the future, especially since Pusha said it was a “bucket list thing” for him to craft an album with Madlib.

It’s Almost Dry is out now via GOOD Music and Def Jam. You can stream it here.

Lil Uzi Vert is a Warner Music artist. Uproxx is an independent subsidiary of Warner Music Group.

Pusha T Celebrates His New Album By Performing ‘Dreamin Of The Past’ On ‘The Tonight Show’

Yesterday was a big hip-hop day on The Tonight Show, specifically for rappers with a standalone T in their names: Ice T was on the show to chat and make his pick for the best rap album of all time, and elsewhere during the episode, Pusha T came through for a performance of “Dreamin Of The Past.” The song comes from It’s Almost Dry, Pusha’s new album he released today.

For his performance, Pusha was backed by some of The Roots (who make The Tonight Show a big hip-hop day any day). The album version of the track features Kanye West, who wasn’t present for the performance. His song-closing verse was replaced with a repetition of the song’s hook.

After the song concluded, Pusha took a second to say, “It’s Almost Dry, out now. Rap album of the year.”

In a recent interview with Charlamagne Tha God, Pusha revealed Kanye, who produced the track, originally wanted the beat for himself, saying, “That record happened… I begged for the record. I begged for the beat. That happens a lot. […] It was one of those ones, I just kept going back to him. I was like, ‘Listen, man: I need this. I need this record.’ I was like, ‘You know what? You should be on the record. You should be on the record, too.’”

Pusha T Addresses Drake’s Alleged Diss on Jack Harlow Song

Fresh off the release of his new album It’s Almost Dry, Pusha T stopped by “The Breakfast Club” where he was once again asked about his infamous feud with Drake amid the Toronto rapper’s reunion with Kanye West.

The rap titans squashed their beef and reunited on stage during a benefit concert for Larry Hoover in L.A. in December, but Pusha is not interested in making peace with his rival.

“I think that was really good for them,” Pusha said. “There’s something weird with them two, the coexisting of both of them together, it’s something that they just have to have. Me personally, I don’t really stand anything to gain from squashing anything. I’m not entertaining it, but there’s nothing I want from the situation. I don’t want to do a record, I don’t want to do none of that.”

Earlier this month, Drake’s collaboration with Jack Harlow leaked on which the 6 God appeared to reignite his beef with Pusha.

“All I hear is plug talk comin’ from middlemen / All I hear is tall tales comin’ from little men,” Drake raps on the track, reportedly titled “Have a Turn.” “When I say bitch, I’m very rarely referring to women / Most of the bitches I know are ni**as / They not even women.”

Pusha acknowledged that he heard the leaked song, but he’s not concerned. “It sounds old to me, the flow sounds old,” he said. “Even what is considered the shots, it’s like, bro, after what I’ve done, like the middle man talk and all that type of talk, that’s not scathing for me. I’m here to like burn down everything.”

Angela Yee noted that Drake appeared to be taking subliminal shots, but Pusha said he doesn’t do subliminals. “I’m not subliminal with nobody today, like, I’m not doing that. From the sound of it, it just sounded old to me. It’s not like fresh.”

When asked if he keeps “something in the chamber just in case,” Pusha said he’s ready for war at any time. “As a lyricist, I got a file of just fire for whatever. That’s for everything, that’s for the world. There’s a file cabinet full of death.”

Drake has not addressed the leaked Jack Harlow verse, but Pusha previously said that he had moved on from their feud. “I’ve already looked past that,” he told Complex in February. “I don’t look towards that anymore. … Bygones are bygones, as far as I see.”

It’s Almost Dry dropped Friday featuring appearances from Lil Uzi Vert, Kid Cudi, Don Toliver, and more. On the eve of his album release, Pusha performed the Ye-assisted “Dreamin of the Past” on “The Tonight Show” with help from The Roots.
