Playboi Carti Scores Legal Win In UMG Copyright Case Over Incorrect Takedown

Playboi Carti and Universal Music Group (UMG) just dodged a huge legal bullet thanks to a new ruling from a federal judge. Moreover, this case stems from the aforementioned artist and label taking down a song from G-Baby which uses the same beat from Carti and Pi’erre Bourne’s “Right Now.” However, G-Baby actually released his song “Oi!” before “Right Now” and did so with a legal license to use this same beat. The judge in this matter ruled that the “FIELD TRIP” creative and UMG didn’t violate the Digital Millenium Copyright Act (DMCA) when they mistakenly took “Oi!” down since they didn’t intend to do so.

Furthermore, this ruling emerged on Tuesday (August 27) amid an update in last year’s lawsuit from G-Baby against Playboi Carti and UMG. The suit claimed that this takedown violated the DMCA’s stipulations protecting creators from improper takedowns. However, the judge in this ruling cited that previous decisions indicate how these safeguards only apply to intentionally irresponsible uses of the legal framework to shut other products down. As such, it seems like the “No Face” MC (which might appear on streaming services soon) will be in the clear.

Playboi Carti Performing At Wireless Festival 2023

Playboi Carti Lawsuit UMG Copyright Take Down Hip Hop News

“Because the DMCA requires only a good faith belief that material is infringing, a copyright holder is not liable for misrepresentation under the DMCA if they subjectively believe the identified material infringes their copyright, even if that belief is ultimately mistaken,” Judge Analisa Torres expressed. She also explained how G-Baby admitted that the UMG employee who took “Oi!” down didn’t know that he licensed the beat that Playboi Carti also used. “This admission alone dooms [G-Baby’s] claim against UMG,” Torres posited. Hopefully Carti and The Weeknd don’t face these issues on their supposed next collab.

Back to the story at hand: “[G-Baby] cites no caselaw for the proposition that one employee’s knowledge that a use may be non-infringing should be imputed to another employee who independently issues a takedown notice on behalf of the company,” the judge ruled. “Although [Playboi Carti] may well have been aware of (and displeased with) [G-Baby’s] license to use the beat, [G-Baby] has failed to establish that [Carti] had any part in the takedown notices.” We’ll see what happens next for one of Complex‘s best Atlanta rappers of all time.

Playboi Carti & The Weeknd’s FaceTime Sparks Excitement Amongst Fans

Overall, Playboi Carti and The Weeknd do not share a lot in common, at least musically speaking. However, they put a lot of people on to what they can do a track together last summer. The two respective superstars, and pop legend Madonna, all united for “Popular”. The 80s synth-pop/pop rap track was one of the first soundtrack cuts for Abel Tesfaye’s HBO exclusive TV show, The Idol. Sadly, the program turned out to be a major flop, but the single did not. For how cooky the track came across at its inception, it did a respectable job on the charts, peaking and debuting at 43 on the Billboard Hot 100.

In this case, it was more of a grower, as it is now certified platinum as of June 20, 2024. Furthermore, it also made its way onto the deluxe version of The Weeknd’s The Highlights compilation record. Finally, “Popular” sits at nearly 900 million streams, good enough for the fifth spot on his most popular on Spotify. Since the release of this single, it seems that The Weeknd and Playboi Carti are pretty good buddies. For example, the label head iced out the Dawn FM creator with some custom XO/Opium iced out jewelry.

Do You Need Another Collab Between Playboi Carti & The Weeknd?

Now, it seems that they are furthering that friendship after a recent FaceTime according to Kurrco. In a frankly odd but funny screenshot, Abel is holding a lit lighter with smiles for miles. Then, there’s Carti who is looking more and more like Kanye West by the second. In fact, some fans were quick to point that out. “You mean Kanye and weekend?”, one X user hilariously questions. However, this repost also led some fans to hope for more music from this new tandem in the future. “NEED A COLLAB”, another excitedly types. “Carti and weeknd the duo we never thought we needed”. Hopefully, that does turn out to be the case. Both artists have records in the works so maybe we will see them together a track when those eventually drop.

What are your thoughts on Playboi Carti and The Weeknd talking to each other on FaceTime? Do you think a new collaboration is coming soon? Is “Popular” still in your rotation? Who do you think will drop their new album first? We would like to hear what you have to say, so leave your thoughts in the comments. Additionally, always keep it locked in with HNHH for all of the latest news surrounding Playboi Carti and The Weeknd. Finally, stay with us for everything else going on in the music world.

Drake And Playboi Carti Have ‘No Face’ For Their Stinging Bars, But Fans Believe The Song Is A Kendrick Lamar Diss

The summer is coming to a close, but Drake still has heat to deliver. Yesterday (August 23), the “Too Good” rapper seemingly woke up and chose violence.

Apparently, Drake’s 100 Gigs release was just a warm-up. When everyone least expected it, Drake dropped another previously unreleased collaboration, “No Face” featuring Playboi Carti.

Although Playboi Carti’s guest verses have proven to be a hit song’s secret sauce, he only appears across the track’s chorus. The verses are reserved for Drake, as he seemingly took aim at Kendrick Lamar once again. Back in May, Drake supposedly waved that white flag in heated battle. But, some rap beefs never die.

Drake subtly addressed his longtime foe, Metro Boomin, and possibly Mustard in the opening lines, as he rapped: “This is the sh*t that my daddy had raised me on / N****s got lit off the features I skated on / I gotta know, I gotta know / How you get lit off the n**** you hatin’ on? / Numbers untouchable, they got the data wrong.”

In the next verse, Drake turned his attention to musicians who jumped in to shade him during the height of his beef with Kendrick Lamar.

“Cause I keep on talkin’ ’bout beefin’ and business and money and women / It’s no diagnosis, they emptied the clip / Quick, swap that sh*t out, and I came back reloaded / I’m just so happy that n****s who envied and held that shit in got to finally show it / I’m over the / Moon, yeah, we’ll see you boys soon / I’m spreadin’ my wings, I hop out cocoon,” he rapped.

Drake Surprise Drops Three New Songs On Instagram

Drake is back. He wasn’t gone that long, but still. The Toronto rapper surprised fans everywhere by dropping three new songs on his Instagram burner account. The songs include the unreleased collab with Playboi Carti, “No Face” and “Circadian Rhythm.” The latter is billed as a sequel to the rapper’s 2013 song “The Language.” The biggest revelation, though, is that Drake finally put out a CDQ version of the highly anticipated song “Supersoak (SOD).” We knew it was coming, we just didn’t realize it was going to be this soon.

Drake previously linked up with Playboi Carti on “Pain 1993.” The vibe for “No Face” is a lot more angry and aggressive than their first collab, though. It definitely sounds more like a Playboi Carti song that just has a Drake feature tacked onto it. Whether that’s a good thing or a bad thing depends on how you feel about Carti. “Circadian Rhythm” is going to get the least attention, due to it having no feature or drama attached to it. That being said, it might just be the best song of the batch here. “Circadian Rhythm” has a great groove to it, and feels the most like a throwback Drake song. You’ll be able to tell why he made it a sequel to “The Language.”

Drake Officially Removed Lil Yachty From ‘Supersoak’

“Supersoak” is the big story here, though. Kai Cenat originally previewed the song during a live stream. Lil Yachty was featured on the original version. Yachty then went on the Flagrant podcast and claimed that the song would never be released due to a sample clearance issue. THEN Drake’s people claimed that the song would be coming out officially. Only, Lil Yachty wouldn’t be featured on it. This is what we meant when we previously alluded to “drama.” The Drake and Yachty saga doesn’t even get into Soulja Boy, and umbrage he took with Drake borrowing his “Supersoak” catchphrase. Drake and Soulja are not going to mend their fences, ever, it feels like.

All that said, “Supersoak” is a hit. It’s got a wildly catchy instrumental. It also features a Drake flow that is bound to get stuck in people’s heads. There’s been rumors that the rapper is already shooting a music video for the song, which all but confirms that it’s his next big single. We’ve yet to given information as to what happened between Drake and Lil Yachty. That said, fans can bask in the fact that we finally have the “Supersoak” song. Hopefully they all land on streaming soon.

Playboi Carti Tries To Explain Himself In Wild Body Cam Footage Of Traffic Stop

Playboi Carti is as mysterious as ever these days, which means that seeing him in mundane situations we can relate to is all the more bizarre. Moreover, new footage recently emerged of a 2022 traffic stop in which a police officer pulled him and Ken Carson over for going 84MPH in a 35 zone. In the clip below, Iggy Azalea’s ex explained that they were “trying to get straight back home” with a female in the backseat who spoke unintelligibly. Then, he stepped out of the vehicle to continue the processing, and eventually got back to his vehicle. All in all, not the worst celebrity pull-over we’ve seen.

Elsewhere, though, Playboi Carti is catching flack instead of engagement due to his high placement in Complex‘s best Atlanta rappers list (at number 12). “I can’t get jiggy with that,” B. Dot expressed on Way Up With Angela Yee. “Playboi Carti couldn’t rap a GIF. Have you ever heard Playboi Carti’s music? He raps in like Batman sound effects. He sucks. Absolutely, he’s terrible. Am I alone in here? Okay. Nah, he’s terrible.”

Playboi Carti’s 2022 Traffic Stop

But B. Dot isn’t the only rap-adjacent commentator with some critical smoke for Playboi Carti, although this next example is much more personal. You may recall that Adin Ross invited him for a livestream which transpired for all of a couple of minutes before the rapper dipped, allegedly finessing him out of millions of dollars. In fact, “King Vamp” even seemed to reference this on a recently leaked song, as he seemed to include a call between him and Ross on the intro. We doubt that this particular version of the song will ever come out, but a bag is a bag, so who knows what happens?

But beyond all this criticism and speeding incidents, Playboi Carti fans remain very excited for what he’s got for fans. In fact, this might relate not just to his long-awaited album, but to some other collaborative and performance updates. The “FE!N” duo teased a “OOCACTUS” concert, and Carti and Travis Scott electrified die-hards with this hint. For the sake of preserving surprises, we wouldn’t put any money on this actually going down, but fans can dream…

Iggy Azalea Seemingly Mocks Playboi Carti’s Baby Voice In New Ad

Iggy Azalea and Playboi Carti do not get along. The former couple had an acrimonious split despite sharing a child. Azalea, in particular, has been open about criticizing Carti for his lack of involvement in their son’s life. It’s this behind-the-scenes context that makes Azalea’s latest ad so intriguing. She gets a phone call in her latest ad for Unreal Mobile, and the person on the other line seems like a thinly veiled dig at Playboi Carti. The two have a lengthy conversation, in which Iggy Azalea manages to talk her odd client into switching over to her partnership brand.

There are quite a few parallels between the “client” and Playboi Carti. For one, the client is dressed very much in the rapper’s gothic style. The client also brags about drinking blood for thousands of years, a nod to vampirism which is once again Carti’s wheelhouse. The rapper literally has a song called “VAMP ANTHEM” on his 2020 album Whole Lotta Red. Iggy Azalea and the Unreal Mobile team didn’t stop at the look, though. At one point during the video, the client breaks out into an incoherent baby voice. A voice that’s pretty directly poking fun at Playboi Carti’s “baby voice” flow.

Iggy Azalea’s Ad Appears To Clown Carti’s Style

You don’t need to squint to see what Iggy Azalea is doing here. She’s using her platform and her deal with Unreal Mobile to poke fun at the father of her child. It’s not a particularly funny ad, but it definitely gets in some digs on Playboi Carti’s eccentric persona. Those who question whether Azalea would go as far as to diss Carti in an ad needn’t look further back than July. The “Fancy” rapper went on the Dinner’s on Me podcast and made it very clear that she doesn’t consider Carti a dad to their son. “I’m very much a single mother,” she told the hosts. “I’m very much the only parent. No disrespect, but yes, I am not co-parenting really, and that’s just the reality of it. It’s one, it’s 24/7.”

Iggy Azalea disses Playboi Carti every chance she gets. When a fan posted a compilation of Carti with his son, the Australian rapper threw another dig his way. “Its cool how you can fit damn near every visit into just one video,” she wrote on Twitter in December. “Talented!” Playboi Carti is famous for not giving interviews or discussing his personal life. He’s never dissed Iggy Azalea publicly. That said, it’s easy to see why Azalea is ticked off.

Playboi Carti Trolls Adin Ross By Including Their Phone Call In A New Leaked Track

Playboi Carti still hasn’t dropped a new album, and apart from his “officially shared” material over the past few months, plenty of unofficial leaks also surfaced. A recent unreleased track appeared online and raised many fans’ eyebrows for how it seemingly disses Adin Ross by using an alleged phone call recording of the streamer in the intro. As for the quality of the song itself, it’s basically a more low-key version of what you’d expect from this Carti era, but there’s not enough context to really tell whether this is a troll or a genuine diss. Either way, he’s definitely leaning into the bit, and we can’t imagine that Adin is too happy about this considering the money that the rapper finessed from him after their failed livestream.

Furthermore, this isn’t the first time that an alleged Playboi Carti leak has seemingly dissed Adin Ross and the higher-ups at the Kick streaming platform in the past. “I scammed a billionaire, woah,” he raps on an unreleased leaked version of “Type S**t” with Future, Metro Boomin, and Travis Scott. It’s a bit of a weird flex, but a notable line regardless.

Playboi Carti Includes Adin Ross Call In New Leak

Meanwhile, Adin Ross is not happy with Playboi Carti at all (for understandable reasons), and is even campaigning against his new music. He said that the Whole Lotta Red creative’s last “single” on social media, “KETAMINE,” is “trash” and “damage control” for all the new security footage that Adin released of their livestream moment. Of course, fans on either side have their reasons to clown their fav’s enemy, and most of them probably are just enjoying the antics and find the whole thing funny. But we doubt that things will ever get super serious between a content creator and an antisocial artist.

Don’t think Carti 2 is happening anymore,” Adin Ross expressed concerning his failed efforts to link up with Playboi Carti again. “I have a theory that Carti was just texting me to kind of just keep me in the position where I’m not gonna be on his bad side, where I’m on the internet talking crazy, if that makes sense. To get the heat off his name type s**t. I think I got played, but hey bro, it is what it is. Because I was texting his phone and he stopped answering out of nowhere. I have the warehouse footage. I’m about to just release it. Once I get the confirmation that we’re not doing part two. Is that blackmail? I mean dude, I kind of got scammed, so I’m blackmailing a f***ing scam so you can’t blame me.”

Travis Scott and Playboi Carti have devoted fanbases. Seriously, fans love these two artists. They are among the most revered names in the genre, mainly due to the ways in which they experiment with it. And pretty soon, fans will get a chance to witness their shared experimentation in a concert setting. Travis Scott And Playboi Carti Previewed A New Collab

Travis Scott and Playboi Carti have a storied track record together. The former appeared on “Love Hurts” from Carti’s breakthrough tape, Die Lit, as well as “Green and Purple” and “BACKR00MS. ” Playboi Carti has returned the favor by dropping memorable bars on Scott’s “FE!N.” The “00Cactus” concerts are also an encouraging sign for those who have spent years waiting on Carti’s third studio album. The rapper has been teasing the release of the tentatively titled MUSIC since 2021. There have been dozens of snippets and teaser singles, including the aforementioned “BACKR00MS” with Scott.

Portishead’s Geoff Barrow Calls Out Kanye West And Ty Dolla Sign Over Unauthorized Sample Use On ‘Vultures 2’

Kanye West (Ye) and Ty Dolla Sign surprised fans with their spontaneous release of their latest album, Vultures 2. But the body of work’s arrival isn’t the only thing to shock the public.

Yesterday (August 3), Portishead’s Geoff Barrow was annoyed to learned that the duo sampled the group’s song “Machine Gun” without permission. Over on X (formerly Twitter), Barrow called out the duo for featuring its revered instrumental break on the Vultures 2 track, “Field Trip,” which features Playboi Carti, Don Toliver, and Kodak Black.

“For f*ck’s sake,” he wrote. “Not again 🤷🏼‍♂️.”

Users online chimed in to encourage Barrow to take legal action.

“Dude, you need to sue the f*cker,” wrote one user.

“Jeezus, that’s not even sampling, they just used the entire song for a backing track for some sh*t karaoke. Zero creativity,” penned another.

“Now that’s just a blatant ripoff, and you deserve to be compensated,” added another.

“Make them delete the whole album 💯💯💯,” demanded another.

However, not everyone shared the same sentiments. Fans of Ye, begged Barrow not to take things to court.

“Don’t sue Ye, this song is amazing, let us have it man😭🙏🏻,” wrote one user.

“You should’ve said something after the first listening party it was previewed at bro 😭😭 we finally got the music and now you wanna take it away,” added another.

“Better to ask for forgiveness,” chimed another.

Ye has reportedly already been hit with several copyright infringement lawsuits from past projects, Donda. Even Vultures 1 was surrounded with sample clearance issues (from Donna Summer’s estate to Ozzy Osbourne). But based on Barrow’s response, this is Ye’s second time ripping off his past work. Could this be his legal breaking point?
