New Rappers Weigh In On The Chopped-And-Screwed Movement Watching Paul Wall’s ‘Sittin’ Sidewayz’

In 2005, the world was introduced to a new sound in hip-hop music, one that was strange but somehow undeniable. That sound has come to be known as “chopped-and-screwed,” as it was pioneered by Houston DJ Screw and came to eventually define the regional Texas sound before taking over the mainstream. The song that brought this once underground style to widespread awareness — or at least helped a whole bunch, along with Mike Jones’ “Still Tippin” — was “Sittin’ Sidewayz,” the debut single from diamond-grilled rapper Paul Wall.

In today’s new edition of React Like You Know, our panel — consisting of millennial and Gen-Z artists like Almighty Jay, ASAP Tyy, Baby Tate, Lakeyah, OhGeesy, and Houston’s own KenTheMan — weighs in on the Houston musical movement, as well as other regional staples like slabs (big, candy-painted, classic cars with rims and hydraulics), OG Ron C, and grills. Baby Tate even admits to not knowing that Paul Wall is white when the song first came out, but Strick explains it perfectly: “You might see a white boy with a grill and wonder what’s going on, but sh*t — he with us!”

OhGeesy Explains What ‘Big Bad Wolf’ Means For ‘Behind The Video’

Uproxx’s Behind The Video returns with LA underground bad boy OhGeesy, who breaks down his video for “Big Bad Wolf” featuring YG. The lead single from OhGeesy’s solo debut album Geezyworld Vol. 1, “Big Bad Wolf” found the former Shoreline Mafia member creating a cash storm alongside his West Coast compatriot while dancers twerked their way through the dollar bill debris.

Without going into too many details about the “secret location” of the video shoot, which was in Downtown Los Angeles, OhGeesy reveals how the video came together and takes in fan comments. The song took about 15 minutes to make after the two rappers, who share the same manager, were introduced in the studio. OhGeesy also notes how crazy the LA underground scene can get, but denies participating — with a wink and a smile, just as he does when explains the line “I like my Glock nine like my f*cking llama.” “I love my guns,” he grins. “If I had guns, I would love ’em.” He also insists the money used in the video was all real, “no prop money.”

OhGeesy Announces His Solo Debut With ‘Big Bad Wolf’ Featuring YG

After gaining popularity as the de facto frontman for West Coast party rap crew Shoreline Mafia, LA’s OhGeesy plans to release his debut solo mixtape, Geezyworld Vol. 1, later this summer. To help drum up interest, he solicits YG’s co-sign on his latest single, “Big Bad Wolf,” dropping a money-and-women-themed video for the song that finds the two rappers caught up in a veritable blizzard of bills.

In addition to bundling up against the cash storm, YG and OhGeesy make it rain at the strip club as they spit their turnt-up boasts.

Although Geezyworld Vol. 1 will be OhGeesy’s solo debut, he’s built up enough experience and connections in the rap game to warrant an impressive list of guest stars which not only includes fellow LA upstarts like BlueBucksClan but also features bigger stars like A Boogie Wit Da Hoodie and DaBaby.
