Lil Mama Criticizes Nicki Minaj’s Influence on Female Rap, Sparking Controversy

Screen Shot 2024 07 03 at 12.06.22 PM

Rapper Lil Mama has once again sparked controversy with her sharp criticism of Nicki Minaj and the current state of female rap. Her comments have ignited a heated debate about the oversexualization of female artists in the genre and Minaj’s influence on this trend.

Criticism of Oversexualization

The debate intensified when New Orleans rapper Dee-1 shared a montage on social media, juxtaposing performances by Sexyy Red, GloRilla, Latto, Ice Spice, and Megan Thee Stallion at the BET Awards with his song “Purify My Eyes.” Dee-1’s lyrics lament the oversexualization of female rappers, criticizing the portrayal of women in the music industry.

“I turned on the awards show and the things I’ve seen on the screen/ Will make me cause a scene ’cause it’s so obscene/ We call women queens but we celebrate the prostitution of their bodies,” Dee-1 rapped, reflecting a sentiment that Lil Mama echoed in her own criticism.

Lil Mama’s Rant

On July 1, Lil Mama took to social media to join the conversation, unleashing a scathing critique of Nicki Minaj and her influence on female rap. She labeled Minaj a “musical prostitute” and accused her of setting a negative example for younger female rappers.

“What major musical prostitutes do you remember from the last 15 years?” Lil Mama wrote. “Who do you think they watched corporate give a platform and flowers for sitting out. Be forreal.” She suggested that the current wave of female rappers, influenced by Minaj, were not being true to themselves and were instead pandering to corporate interests.

Lil Mama’s comments were part of a larger critique of the industry, where she accused executives, fans, and artists of lacking the courage to do better. “We can do better as a ‘culture’ @bet + @betawards I mean this sincerely,” she wrote. “Deep down, most executives, fans, and artists know we can do better. We just gotta have the courage to do it.”

Heated Reactions

The response to Lil Mama’s comments was swift and divided. Many fans came to Nicki Minaj’s defense, arguing that Lil Mama’s criticism was unfounded and that she was simply seeking attention. Some suggested that Lil Mama was bitter because she was not invited to perform at the BET Awards.

“Are you saying that I would have been performing be selling p**sy too or just performing,” Lil Mama retorted, defending her stance and drawing a clear line between herself and Minaj. Despite the backlash, she attempted to soften her message, stating, “It’s all love. God is the greatest and these women are gonna wake up and realize that they are worth more than any price tag.”

A Longstanding Feud

This is not the first time Lil Mama has publicly criticized Nicki Minaj. In 2011, she accused Minaj of copying her style, telling MTV, “My cut is blunt and futuristic and Nicki Minaj started wearing that bob on her head after she came to my show.” Over the past decade, Lil Mama’s perspective has shifted from viewing herself as an inspiration to positioning herself as a critic of Minaj’s influence.

Lil Mama’s latest comments have reignited discussions about the portrayal of women in rap and the impact of influential artists like Nicki Minaj. As the debate continues, it highlights the ongoing tensions within the music industry regarding authenticity, representation, and the commercialization of female artists.

Kanye West Praises Nicki Minaj In Resurfaced Clip From 2015

Kanye West is a singular artist. No other rapper has been adamant about crediting others, then criticizing them later on. No rapper has revived so many careers, then went on derail his own. It’s a fascinating, very unpredictable story. West’s relationship with Nicki Minaj is a perfect encapsulation of these bizarre twists and turns. Minaj’s verse on West’s classic single “Monster” was a career-making turn, and West said as much during a resurfaced clip from 2015.

“One of the most memorable things about My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy was Nicki Minaj,” he said during a lecture. “And the fact that she kicked my a*s on my song. On one of the best albums… the best album.” The latter comments drew laughter from the audience, but this is a stance West held for years. He repeatedly gave Minaj her flowers for penning the best verse on the song. The praise took on a more complicated strain in 2023, however. West and Minaj, who had seemingly been cool before then, got into an online beef over clearance issues. West wanted Minaj to clear her verse for the song “New Body,” and she refused.

Kanye West Claims He Made Minaj Rewrite Her Verse

Kanye West responded by bringing up the “Monster” verse. “I made that girl rewrite her verse 3 times for ‘Monster,’” he claimed. “I supported her career. So I don’t know what it is.” The rapper did not attempt to hide his frustration with Minaj, either. He posted a screenshot of their text conversation on social media for the world to see. Presumably, in the hopes of bullying Nicki Minaj into clearing her vocals. She did not bend, however. The Young Money icon stuck by her guns, and “New Body” never saw an official release.

Nicki Minaj, did, however, explain why she didn’t want “New Body” cleared. She addressed the matter on Instagram Live, and chalked the controversy over the song to it being multiple years old. “Now regarding Kanye, that train has left the station,” she asserted. “No disrespect in any way, I just put out a brand new album. Why would I put out a song that’s been out for three years?” The song remains a cult favorite in its unreleased form.

Nicki Minaj Blasts Former Manager Deb Antney Over Lil Kim Comment

Screen Shot 2024 07 02 at 7.12.15 AM

Nicki Minaj took to X (formerly known as Twitter) on Sunday night to vent her frustration with her former manager, Deb Antney. The rant followed Antney’s recent interview, where she claimed to have tried to mediate the longstanding feud between Minaj and Lil Kim without Minaj’s knowledge or consent.

In the interview, Antney shared, “I think that we all would love to see that but people would have to be willing to do that. And to be perfectly honest with you, and [Nicki Minaj] gonna kill me for saying even this, but I did reach out to Kim.”

Minaj responded to Antney’s comments with a lengthy and impassioned post on X. “Isn’t it funny how you left out the biggest part of the story?” she began. “I didn’t ask you to do a THING! You told me AFTER THE FACT & I SCREAMED ON YOU & told you if you reach out to ppl now that you’re being seen around me, they will THINK it’s coming FROM ME so to NEVER do that again w/o discussing it with me FIRST. I said I’d never want that & that now she’d think that message came from me which is not cool.”

Amid her rant, Minaj celebrated the success of her Pink Friday 2 World Tour, reflecting her current achievements despite the controversy. She concluded her post with a strong message: “You laughed it off & said her & foxy should come out I said no. I’d only want foxy to come out on stage with me, she’s like family to me. No disrespect. God bless everyone & our children!!! Let us all do our thing & thank God for LIFE. Stop using my name for clickbait in 2024. We get it!!!!! I’m dat btch!!!!!! How dare you? Interviews? Chiiiiiiiiiiiiii WOO WEE!!!!! This world, man, this world. Love yourself deeply.”

Lil Mama Calls Nicki Minaj A Musical Prostitute After BET Awards Win

Lil Mama is no stranger to controversy. The rapper infamously crashed a performance by Jay-Z and Alicia Keys, and her career never recovered. This did not stop her, however, from giving her thoughts on Nicki Minaj. The Young Money superstar won Best Female Hip-Hop Artist at the BET Awards, and instead of congratulating her, Lil Mama decided to tear down her entire career. Lil Mama not only criticized Minaj for her sexualized persona, but claimed that she’s had a negative impact on the genre.

The rant came about via social media on July 1. Lil Mama decided to get into it with Minaj’s infamous fan base, and she did not hold back. She labeled Minaj a “musical prostitute” and proceeded to get meaner from there. “What major musical prostitutes from the last do you remember from the last 15 years,” she wrote. “Who do you think they watched corporate give a platform and flowers for sitting out. Be forreal.” Lil Mama then pointed to Minaj’s influence on the current wave of female rappers. Not in a positive light, either. “They are laughing at us, and the award was a ‘thanks to you, now we have 7, 8, 9 of ’em.’”

Lil Mama Previously Took Credit For Nicki Minaj’s Style

Several users came to Nicki Minaj’s defense. Some claimed that Lil Mama would have been on the BET stage if she were invited. She responded to this by drawing a line in the sand between her and Minaj. “Are you saying that I would have been performing be selling p**sy too or just performing,” she asked. The “Lil Gloss” rapper then tried to tweak her message to assume a more positive perspective. “It’s all love,” she wrote. “God is the greatest and these women are gonna wake up and realize that they are worth more than any price tag.”

This is not the first time Lil Mama has had critiques for Nicki Minaj. Ironically, the first time she did was to accuse Minaj of copying her style. “My cut is blunt and futuristic and Nicki Minaj started wearing that bob on her head after she came to my show,” the rapper told MTV in 2011. “At the end of the day I know what I do. And I know what I possess and I know who I am. I’m a trendsetter.” Things have obviously changed over the last decade, and now Lil Mama sees herself as an antidote to, rather than an inspiration for, the biggest female rapper of all time.

Nicki Minaj Scares The Barbz With Hiatus Rumors After Winning BET’s Best Female Rap Artist Award

Nicki Minaj is still on top, as she won the Best Female Hip-Hop Artist award at the 2024 BET Awards last night (Sunday, June 30) in Los Angeles. However, a recent social media spat has some Barbz thinking that she might go on another hiatus soon thanks to her reply to a fan’s comment about the Deb Antney situation. For those unaware, Roman’s former manager reached out to Lil Kim to see if she and Nicki could squash their beef. The Trinidadian MC was not happy at all with Antney allegedly going behind her back to set this up, and lamented that she’s not letting her grow on her own.

“Nicki please we don’t need another hiatus,” a fan commented wrote to Nicki Minaj under an Instagram post, and her response is what sent fans into a frenzy. “well thank lil Debbie!!!!” she replied. “Deb refuse to let me grow up. She think I’m a kid, HER kid at that! I’m grown!” The allegedly conflicted Ice Spice collaborator had blasted Antney in a lengthy Twitter rant, so we wouldn’t be surprised if there’s more in the tuck.

Camila Cabello Pays Tribute To Nicki Minaj’s Iconic Prague Video

Camila Cabello is riding the high from her new album C,XOXO, and making sure to pay homage to some previous female legends in the process. Moreover, she recently posted a video of herself walking to her private plane at night. “This is how a bad b***h travels from Denmark to Glastonbury. You b***hes can’t even spell Glastonbury,” the singer remarked in the clip while spinning around as she made her way closer to the aircraft. This, of course, is a reference to and a full-blown recreation of an iconic Nicki Minaj video in which she basically does the exact same thing and makes the exact same statement, but from London to Prague.

Furthermore, we know that Camila Cabello is a big rap fan, so this tribute to Nicki Minaj isn’t really a surprising or confusing gesture. After all, Drake haters everywhere conceded that his new collabs with Cabello on C,XOXO are certified summer smashes, even if not everyone’s on board with that. Regardless, there are also appearances on this new album from the City Girls (JT and Yung Miami), Playboi Carti, and Lil Nas X, so there’s plenty of hip-hop representation on here. Some fans might raise an eyebrow at this given the Cuban native’s history with alleged racism and the inevitable discourse of a pop-rap crossover’s potential exploitation, but it’s clear that this is an act of appreciation more than anything else.

Camila Cabello’s Nicki Minaj Homage

Regardless of where you fall on that debate, there’s another debacle that you might disagree with Camila Cabello on as well depending on your view. She recently commented on the battle between her collaborator Drake and Kendrick Lamar, lamenting the constant beef and proposing that they bury the hatchet. “Drake is such a delight,” the 27-year-old shared. “It’s so frustrating to see people talk about someone you know in a negative way. You’re like, ‘Dang, if only you guys could just have dinner or something.’”

Meanwhile, Nicki Minaj has bigger fish to fry than Camila Cabello, what with Ice Spice speaking on alleged negative messages that leaked concerning the young star’s thoughts on her. “Sometimes I’m tempted to engage with certain things,” Spice remarked. “But I also realized you’re just going to give it legs to grow and run with and sometimes I think you can overexplain yourself a little bit. So, I just like to focus on what I can control and what really matters.”

Ice Spice Speaks On The Leaked Texts Of Her Allegedly Dragging Nicki Minaj

Ice Spice has not had the easiest road since starting her rap journey just a couple of years ago. It seems that at nearly every turn, people are critiquing something about her. Whether it be music, fashion, or any other career decision, there seems to be a lot of animosity constantly. For example, her original album cover for Y2K! was clowned mercilessly online. Fans were making tons of jokes about the title being on a trash can. Another thing Ice Spice has been ridiculed over are some alleged leaked texts from an “ex best friend” in which she tore down Nicki Minaj.

The leaker of the messages is Baby Storme and it seems she was doing everything in her power to ruin Spice’s image. According to HipHopDX, this was not the only time Storme was trying to expose the “Munch” rapper. Overall, she was attempting to highlight that she is fake, fatphobic, a cheater, and a liar. As for the Nicki texts allegedly from Spice, there were a few key messages that set a lot of the Barbz off, especially. Two of them were, “shes kinda like my mom. ungrateful and delusional”. That comparison followed previous texts that explained how the drill artist presented the Barbie soundtrack ideas to her because “that’s her brand”.

Ice Spice Is Moving Past The Nicki Minaj Texts

Overall, the whole situation was extremely messy and now Ice Spice is looking to just forget about it. In a recent interview with BET surrounding the upcoming award show, the interviewers vaguely asked her about how she handles certain drawbacks of being famous like the leaked messages. Spice answered by saying, “Sometimes I’m tempted to engage with certain things. But I also realized you’re just going to give it legs to grow and run with and sometimes I think you can overexplain yourself a little bit. So, I just like to focus on what I can control and what really matters.”

What are your thoughts on the response from Ice Spice about the text drama surrounding Nicki Minaj? Do you think she is handling this in the right way, why or why not? If not, should Spice hash things out with her former collaborator? Will we ever get another song between them ever again? We would like to hear what you have to say, so leave your thoughts in the comments. Additionally, always keep it locked in with HNHH for all of the latest news surrounding the Ice Spice and Nicki Minaj. Finally, stay with us for everything else going on in the music world.

What Does Megan Thee Stallion Say About Nicki Minaj On Her New Album ‘Megan’?

Megan Thee Stallion has the headlining new album release of the week with Megan. That’s bad news for Nicki Minaj, since some lines appear to be shots fired right at her.

What Does Megan Thee Stallion Say About Nicki Minaj On “Figueroa”?

The song’s first verse starts with, “P*ssy hoes on the internet / Using me to drive traffic,” before ending, “I’m a motherf*cking brat, not a Barbie / On go with any b*tch that wanna start it.” The Barbie line especially appears to be a pretty clear jab at Minaj, who has often used Barbie-related themes in her music and public persona.

What Does Megan Thee Stallion Say About Nicki Minaj On “Rattle”?

The opening verse begins, “I wanted everybody right here with me / But that was my fault, being too friendly / I was thinking everything was all good / But the whole time, you was my enemy /
Only time y’all n****s in agreement / Is when all y’all tryna go against me / Only time y’all weak hoes link up / It’s when another b*tch tryna get rid of me.”

Then, there’s speculation that the following line could be about either Minaj or Meg’s former best friend Kelsey Nicole: “Damn, b*tch, it been four years / Worry ’bout your man and your kid / Your life must be boring as f*ck if you still reminiscing ’bout sh*it that we did.”

What Does Megan Thee Stallion Say About Nicki Minaj On “Hiss”?

Hiss” has been out since January, so this is a track fans are already familiar with. Most notably, towards the end of the track’s opening verse, Meg takes an apparent swing at Minaj’s husband Kenneth Petty. She raps, “These hoes don’t be mad at Megan, these hoes mad at Megan’s Law,” seemingly in reference to Petty’s sexual assault allegations and failure to register as a sex offender in California.

Megan is out now via Hot Girl Productions. Find more information here.

Nicki Minaj’s Sister Ming Li Claims She Was Bullied Over Minaj’s Success

Nicki Minaj is the most successful female rapper of all time. She continues to break records more than a decade and a half into her career, and she doesn’t seem to be slowing down. She will go down as one of the defining rappers of her generation, regardless of gender. In other words, Nicki Minaj casts a massive shadow. It would be extremely difficult to break through in the same field as Minaj, especially as a family member. This is what makes Ming Li Minaj’s recent comments so revelatory.

Ming Li recently went on the We In Miami podcast. She discussed her burgeoning music career, and her complicated relationship with Nicki Minaj, her older half-sister. Nepotism has become a talking point in recent years, but Ming Li claims her family ties actually made things harder for her growing up. “It was kinda hard,” she admitted. “I used to be bullied a lot because people used to say like ‘Oh if this person was your sister, why didn’t she do this for you?’” Ming Li went on to explain that the bullying she dealt with led to resentment. “At a young age, you don’t know how to answer,” she stated.

Nicki Minaj’s Sister Admits They Were Never Close

The relationship grew more complicated when Ming Li decided to become a rapper. “I never needed her to help me get to my goal,” she asserted. “I just needed her to see that I can do it, and she can be proud of me without having to think that I needed to have a easy way.” Nicki Minaj’s success was daunting for Ming Li on multiple levels. It also led to instances in which Ming Li tried to impress the rapper. “I used to have this urge,” she revealed. “Of wanting to impress my sister.” Part of the desire to impress Minaj was due to the fact that the rapper was always busy. Ming Li claimed that the two were never very close, and they had a propensity to fight whenever they were together.

At the end of the day, though, Ming Li claimed it was all love. The burgeoning rapper attributed her arguments with Minaj as being something that siblings just do. “She was good sister,” Ming Li added. “She would check up on me and my dad from time to time… Always made sure that were good. I don’t have no hate towards her.” As Ming Li’s profile, fans may even get to see her and Nicki Minaj trade bars on the same record.

Cardi B Delivered A Message To All The ‘Opp B*tches’ Hating On Her At The 2024 Hollywood Unlock Impact Awards

Cardi B’s long-awaited sophomore album isn’t slated to be released until 2025. However, that hasn’t stopped the “WAP” rapper from dusting off the microphone for several notable collaborations. But just as she dropped off guest verses, Cardi has picked up a few rap beefs along the way.

Yesterday (June 21), during the 2024 Hollywood Unlocked Impact Awards, Cardi addressed those dust ups and more as she accepted the night’s Inspiration Award.

“I just want to say thank Jason [Lee] so much for this award,” she said. “I’m really my biggest critic and I always say this, ‘Nobody has it harder than in the industry and in every genre than a female rapper, and I’m going to tell you why. You have to have the best verse. Not only that, you have to kill the charts. On top of that, your personal life has to be perfect, or then the opp b*tches are going to use that against you.”

Although Cardi didn’t outright name any of those foes, users online quickly took it as a jab at either BIA or Nicki Minaj (maybe even both).

Cardi went on to clap back at those who continue to use her husband and fellow rapper, Offset’s past infidelities, to hurt her.

“‘Your husband. Your husband.’ Shut up,” she said. “I make more money than all the n****s you’re f*cking. So you know sometimes it is hard to be yourself. It is hard to want to push yourself into the music because sometimes I don’t like showing weakness in my music because, ‘You can’t see the p*ssy in me b*tch.’”
