Pras Retrial Under Review Due To Defense Lawyer’s Incompetence: Report

Despite his guilty verdict in a federal trial for political conspiracy and money laundering, it looks like Pras will still get the opportunity to fight for a second chance. Moreover, new reports from Vulture and HipHopDX indicate that earlier this month, the court called for a hearing to discuss the rapper’s defense team for three days. This is in order to determine whether he should get a retrial given the lack of competence demonstrated by his defense attorney David Kenner. For example, Vulture reports that he outsourced work to a remote medical malpractice lawyer, filed his first motion a year after being able to do so, concealed a limiting injury, and did not bring on experienced legal practitioners to assist in the process.

“Unsuccessful is not the same as ineffective,” prosecutor Nicole Lockhart remarked. Given this perceived failure to effectively represent Pras, who faces 20 years in jail on 10 counts, Judge Colleen Kollar-Kotelly thinks this could warrant a more fair and prepared shot. As such, a sentence, retrial, or plea-bargain talks could surface as the court’s preferred method of handling this, although this is all still presumably under review at press time. According to this case’s conviction last April, the Fugees star allegedly lobbied illegally in the best interests of his colleagues, in-state and overseas, when it comes to campaign donations and other political and economic factors, in addition to other lawsuits.

Not only that, but Pras’ former lawyer also allegedly used artificial intelligence to craft their closing statement, tanking their chances. “Kenner’s closing argument made frivolous arguments, misapprehended the required elements, conflated the schemes and ignored critical weaknesses in the government’s case,” his new legal team stated. The A.I. program failed Kenner, and Kenner failed [Pras] Michel. The closing argument was deficient, unhelpful and a missed opportunity that prejudiced the defense.”

Meanwhile, some reports suggest Kenner actually had a financial stake in the company that created this A.I. program, but the company EyeLevel.AI denied this despite his boasting. Regardless of all this, the New Jersey-born artist maintained his innocence. “Pras was never an FBI informant,” his publicist shared. “It’s not accurate and, quite frankly, it’s dangerous. If he was an informant, he would not be on trial. Also, these reports suggest that neither is very interested in seeking another partner right now, and that they want to focus on their careers first and foremost. It’s a sad thing to hear about, but at least this all seems amicable and respectful, which is more than we can ask for in these wild times.

Furthermore, the West Coast MCs confirmed their romance around in May of 2023 following a month or so of rumors. Moreover, Graeme Barrett recently uploaded a humorous hoax that spoofed the construction of a tomb for the 6ix God in his home city of Toronto on Wednesday (January 10). “It’s got everything Drake requested for the afterlife,” Barrett said as the “site supervisor” during the fake broadcast news report. “So there’s rooms filled with Patron, there’s room for 21 Savage, and there’s also a fully functioning OVO store.” Furthermore, the most streamed rapper of 2023 is living better than most of us even in the afterlife.

Of course, this was all just a big joke, but some fans still made fun of these requests and of this construction as if it was really happening. This was made clear when Barrett joked that “an old lady cursed all the items, so if someone does steal something, for the rest of their life, they will be followed home by the owl man.” Also, he said that the only sealed item in this tomb is a pirated copy of Stranger Things. It seems like the comedian did his research and still thinks there’s some mileage in the Drake and Millie Bobby Brown rumors.

One question that folks had, for example, is whether Sean Combs will attend the 2024 Grammys, given his nomination for Best Progressive R&B Album for The Love Album: Off The Grid. It marks his first solo nomination since 2004, in which he won Best Rap Group/Duo Performance for “Shake Ya Tailfeather” featuring Nelly and Murphy Lee.

Now, according to The Hollywood Reporter, Diddy will not attend this year’s ceremony, taking place on February 4. This news allegedly comes directly from one of his representatives, who spoke to the outlet about this decision as he also faces shut-outs from reality TV programs and many more consequences. Furthermore, back in December, the Recording Academy stated to Radar Online that they are “taking this matter very seriously and are in the process of evaluating it with the time and care that it deserves.” If this news is true, then perhaps we will never know how the Grammys’ organizers would’ve truly handled this situation.
