New York Fashion Week has officially wrapped for another season, but we’re still digesting all of the incredible outfits that made their debut on the runway, as well as those worn by our favourite celebrities. Plenty of hip-hop’s finest were in attendance at parties over the past few days, with figures like Ice Spice, Doja Cat, and Coi Leray already sharing their photo dumps on Instagram. Another duo that’s making headlines is Pardison Fontaine and Jada Kingdom, who seemingly confirmed their relationship.
The Shade Room has been hinting at a romance blossoming between the two since spotting Fontaine’s jewellery in the Jamaican’s birthday photo dump earlier this month. Kingdom left a comment on one of the posts to address the rumours. While she didn’t specifically claim the lyricist as her man, she did make it known that she’s already grown tired of her love life being the talk of the town. Regardless, when the “D**kmatized” hitmaker stepped out with Pardi during NYFW, the latest photos of them became the centre of public discourse.
In paparazzi photos captured of the pair, the “Hoop Earrings” artist confidently strolls down the sidewalk in a green polo shirt and leather shorts. His silver accessories are sitting around his neck and wrists, and narrow sunglasses shield his eyes from the camera flashes. On his arm, Kingdom looks as glamorous as ever, covering her curves from the impending fall weather in black trousers and a white tee.
Seeing as Pardi and Thee Stallion never officially confirmed their breakup with fans, it’s not surprising to see him keeping this new romance lowkey. Now that it’s out in the open, however, it likely won’t be long before we see him spoiling Jada Kingdom in all the sweet ways he used to treat his ex. Since we can’t share the couple’s NYFW photos directly on HNHH, you can find those by clicking the Via below.
Lola Brooke sure knows how to keep the energy going! The rising rapper took the stage on Sept. 9 at The Armory Track in New York City as part of a fashion week event, and had the crowd going crazy for her performance. An unexpected twist happened where Lola Brooke fell off the stage during her performance, however she got right back up. The moment showcased Lola’s resilience and professionalism, as she continued to perform and even made light of the moment with the audience.
Caught on camera, Lola can be seen confidently walking towards the crowd. It was then that she misstepped and teetered of the side of the stage. She was in the midst of performing her hit song “Make Me Feel Good.” Subsequently, she momentarily misjudged her steps and almost disappeared into the midst of the crowd. The audience helped her get back on stage, and she resumed the performance like nothing happened.
Lola Brooke displayed an impressive bounce-back, quite literally. With a swift recovery that left the audience both surprised and impressed, she immediately regained her footing. In a lighthearted remark to the audience after the song ended, Lola laughed, “I almost bust my ass, word. We still gon’ do the things we like to do, right?” Overall, Lola Brooke’s stage mishap transformed into a moment of triumph. This is an example of a moment that showcases her character and ability to find humor in the unexpected.
Even in the age of social media, where every moment can be dissected and amplified, Lola Brooke remained unfazed. Adding a touch of humor to the situation, Lola Brooke took to social media to share her reaction to the fall on social media. She left a comment on a video that The Shade Room posted of her fall, that wrote “Thank god I’m little I fell In slow motion.” To top it off, she shared a meme featuring Ezel, a memorable character from the 1995 film Friday, delivering his famous line, “My neck. My back.”
There’s been a recent demand among music lovers for women in the industry to stop sexualizing themselves in hopes of increasing sales. Of course, using sex to sell has long been a top marketing tactic, so we likely won’t see a decrease in twerking videos or thirst traps anytime soon. Cardi B and Megan Thee Stallion’s new “Bongos” single has plenty of other artists throwing it back for Instagram, and the ongoing New York Fashion Week events have seen some serious skin showing from more than one rap diva. Coi Leray has become a staple at runway events in recent years, and this season is no exception.
We’ve seen the Boston-born baddie sitting front row at presentations put together by renowned designers, for all of which she wore creative (albeit revealing) outfits. One of the “Anxiety” artist’s most noteworthy looks of the week so far was for the Jean Paul Gaultier x KNWLS collaboration party, put together by SSENSE. It was a star-studded event, with Ice Spice, Doja Cat, Doechii, NLE Choppa, and many others also stepping out.
Leray has been loving all-black ensembles lately. While most of her legs and upper half were covered, the fabric was sheer. The only parts of the fashionista shielded from our eyes were her thong-cut underwear and the skin beneath her chunky black knee-high boots. As always, the rising star looked completely comfortable at the event, turning up and twerking with other artists while celebrating the new joint effort.
It’s not unusual to see nearly all of our favourite celebrities stepping out for fashion week, but there have definitely been some unusual pairings making headlines this season. Kylie Jenner is completely refreshing the circle of company she keeps around her, attending various events with her new man, Timothee Chalamet, and her former best friend, Jordyn Woods. Read more about that at the link below, and check back later for more music/pop culture news updates.
Ice Spice linked up with both Coi Leray and Kali Uchis during New York Fashion Week. The three artists all sat front row for Dion Lee during an event on Saturday night. Afterward, they shared pictures from the meet-up on social media. Diplo and Lourdes Leon were also in attendance.
“Me and @icespicee_ hair colors,” Coi Leray captioned a photo of herself and the New York rapper. She added several heart eyes emojis. Ice Spice also shared a series of pics from the night on Instagram, one of which features Kalis Uchis. In addition to attending the event, Ice Spice also performed at the brand’s afterparty in Manhattan’s Boom Boom Room.
Ice Spice has been in the midst of a huge year for her career. After blowing up in 2022, following the success of “Munch (Feelin’ U),” she’s continued to dominate headlines in 2023. Back in May, she graced the stage alongside Taylor Swift at one of the singer’s concerts on her Eras Tour. “I was like, ‘You f— with my project? Like, what?’” Ice Spice told The Guardian when asked about how their relationship came together. “She’s so sweet — I was so obsessed with how humble she was and willing to work. She gives me so much advice. We talk all the time and she’s so funny. But I can’t say what she be telling me!”
It’s also been a big year for Coi Leray, who dropped her second studio album, Coi, back in June. The album features David Guetta, Saucy Santana, Giggs, Lola Brooke, and even the late James Brown. The tracklist includes the singles “Players”, “Bops”, “My Body”, and “Run It Up.”
After recovering from the wild ride that is summer/music festival season, many of our favourite fashionistas are currently spending their September in New York City for another season of Fashion Week presentations. There appears to be a broad mix of recording artists, actresses, socialites, and internet personalities nabbing front-row seats at some of the biggest brands’ events. Among them are Ice Spice and Julia Fox.
Both women have obviously become known for turning heads with their outfits throughout their rise to fame. The rap diva chiefly prefers booty-baring mini skirts and showing her panty. Fox tends to explore more avant-garde style choices, such as the heart-shaped nipple pasties she rocked around the Big Apple on Friday (September 8). The Uncut Gems actress styled her long, red hair in two braids, complete with pretty black bows, almost emulating shirt sleeves running down her chest.
The mother of one’s midsection was bare aside from an intricate black corset. She managed to keep ultra-low waist pants up while the paparazzi snapped her photo. Fox has been redefining her status as a style icon for the past few days, wearing everything from fairy wings to a two-piece set covered in watches.
Her bold, black outfit pictured above was swapped out for an all-white ensemble later that evening. The Italian-born starlet looked ethereal, as seen below, and only continues to prove how expansive her range (not to mention confidence) is.
Keep scrolling to see some of our favourite outfits Julia Fox has stepped out in over the past week. Who do you think has been the best dressed at New York Fashion Week so far? Let us know in the comments, and check back later for more music/pop culture news updates.
New York Fashion Week is in full swing but one of the people making the biggest headlines is also one of the youngest attendees. Royal Reign, the nine-year-old daughter of Lil Kim, is garnering widespread praise for her appearance on the runway. Royal made an appearance at the 13th Annual Rookie USA Fashion Show earlier this week. Other famous faces included Ice-T’s daughter Chanel and Chanel Iman’s daughters Cali and Cassie. Kim shared several shots of her daughter, including a black and white tracksuit look that inspired some serious deja vu. Elsewhere, Kim showed off her daughter in a white-and-purple Jordan jersey.
“I’m such a stage mom. My baby killed it. I’m sooo proud of her!!!” the 49-year-old rapper wrote on Instagram. It’s something of a full circle for the mother and daughter. Back in 2014, it was an appearance at New York Fashion Week that revealed to the world that Lil Kim was pregnant. “My little boo boo is coming! My little baby boo my sunshine!” Kim told E! News at the time. It’s not the first time that Royal has found the spotlight this year, however. Back in June, she was spotted taking in a Saucy Santana concert during Hollywood Pride.
However, the attention on her daughter is likely a breath of fresh air for Lil Kim, who has not had the best week. Kim was recruited by Ebony as the anchor of their Hip Hop 50 feature and was shot in a gorgeous satin gown. However, fans immediately noticed that Kim had been subjected to some poorly implemented Photoshop or similar editing.
“The entire staff deserves JAIL,” one irate fan wrote on social media, which was a good summary of the backlash the feature received. “More like Kim Jong Un,” another remarked. “Lil Kim looks like a Sims character,” joked another. “This is egregious. Why is Kim looking like she’s been generated by AI,” lamented someone else. As mentioned, it’s likely that with so much backlash to her Ebony feature, Kim will much likely prefer putting her energy into supporting her daughter’s runway debut. Furthermore, follow all the latest music and fashion news here at HotNewHipHop. We’ll have more coverage of New York Fashion Week as the industry mainstay continues this weekend.
Lori Harvey and Teyana Taylor recently linked up, posing for photos at the PrettyLittleThing runway show in NYC and turning heads in their all-black getups. Harvey rocked a sheer plunging black gown, paired with a set of black velvet gloves. The creative director showed out in a suit-inspired gown, complete with satin details. Both complimented their looks with some eye-catching gold accessories. The duo showcased pieces from the brand’s recent collaboration with supermodel Naomi Campbell.
The PrettyLittleThing fashion show displayed the new collaboration between the brand and Campbell, who even took the runway for a spin herself. She admits that even for her, the walk was quite the undertaking. Campbell says it was “nerve-wracking to do that walk — on every level,” adding, however, that “this is what [she] wanted.” The collection is inspired by Campbell’s iconic ’90s looks, and showcases the pieces on an array of diverse bodies. PrettyLittleThing describes the Naomi Campbell collab on their website, stating that, “This collection will bring all the attitude and provide all the statement pieces that will take your wardrobe to a whole new level.”
It’s clear that both Taylor and Harvey kicked off New York Fashion Week right. As of late, Taylor has also dipped her toe back into performing, recently appearing as a guest headliner at Afropunk Brooklyn. She got emotional during her set, telling fans “I’m outside.” The singer continued, “I always get scared to headline festivals because I never think anybody will stay for me. I just wanna thank y’all so much for staying out in this hot-a** weather for me.”
Harvey, on the other hand, has been busy flaunting her relationship with Damson Idris on social media. Most recently, she celebrated the British actor’s 32nd birthday with a sweet social media post. “Happyyyy Birthdayyyy twinnnnn!!!! I love youuuuuu,” the model wrote on her Instagram Story. Keep an eye on HNHH for more updates on Teyana Taylor and Lori Harvey.
MSCHF, which is Mischief without the vowels, is an art collective based out of New York City. The collective has a long-standing history of trolling consumer culture, specifically by selling consumer goods. Known for such releases as the shoe collaboration with Lil Nas X, and the Nike Satan Shoes. Which allegedly were made with real human blood. As well as Jimmy Fallon’s Gobstomper sneakers last summer, which were, “designed to be destroyed.” A few months later, they put out a medical boot. Why? The project was described as an homage to the fact that “industries with little to no regard for aesthetics designing objects for utilitarian purposes churn out bangers like no one else.”
To add to their long line of consumer products for consumerism’s sake they have released items such as a MSCHF defibrillator “to fix your literal broken heart.” As well as a collection of AI-generated foot pics. With the tagline “this foot does not exist.” The collective has even gone so far as to have made Birkenstocks out of Birkin Bags, sold a box of cereal containing one big Fruit Loop, and created an ATM leaderboard that tracks and ranks the checking account balance of anyone who uses it. As of December 2022, Diplo was No. 1 with $3,004,913.06.
The Big Red Boots Are Unveiled
On February 16th, the brand released its latest product. A shoe destined to go viral: MSCHF’s big red boots, aptly named the Big Red Boot. They are made of TPU rubber and an EVA mid-outsole and take design cues from a video game. A press release for the shoe read, “Cartoonishness is an abstraction that frees us from the constraints of reality,” the release continued, “If you kick someone in these boots, they go boing!” The artist collective known for its subversive creations, stated, “Big red boots are really not shaped like feet, but they are extremely shaped like boots.”
Each boot weighs about three and a half pounds bringing the total weight for the pair to a whopping seven pounds. Even more astounding than the weight of the boots, was the rollout of the shoes. Leading up to New York Fashion Week, they were spotted everywhere among a multitude of celebrities. From Instagram models and TikTok grandpas to the Barclays center during Coi Leray’s halftime show. Photos of artist Diplo emerged wearing the Big Red Boots at a Knicks game. They were even spotted on WWE’s Seth Rollins, as he kicked another wrestler in the face while wearing the Big Red Boots. Basketball player Shai Gilgeous-Alexander wore them to the arena before a game and even Janelle Monae wore them to shoot hoops.
Celebrities Set The Trend
Once NYFW began, the boots became the new “it” accessory. Not surprisingly of course. Brands typically give celebrities and models articles of specific clothing and/or accessories to wear, as a marketing technique. MSCHF was no different with their Big Red Boots. They were spotted by celebrities and street style stars all over Fashion Week. Street-style photographer Phil Oh captured them on various stars. American singer/songwriter Dorian Electra styled them with a graphic coat, and mini skirt to fully show the shoes and donned a matching beret. Model Sarah Snyder paired the boots with a glossy red skirt and white tights; TikTok star and model Wisdom Kaye decided to style them with athletic shorts. No matter how they were worn the statement boots were styled to be the focal point.
Though the boots are rather unusual and even more impractical to wear, it’s been quite interesting to see how quickly the world was taken by storm by them. Upon being released on the 16th of February, the Big Red Boots were sold out in minutes. Leading to the site crashing shortly thereafter. Upon selling out, they were then listed on resale sites ranging between $1,200 and $1,500. Almost quadruple the original selling price of $350. The debate on the shoes has been as interesting as the shoes themselves. Some say the brand, and specifically the boots, are a social experiment–slash–experiential art project. While many others still have said the real art is the whole spectacle of releasing such a shoe. The reaction to the boots, the reaction to that reaction, the realization that it’s not just about boots, and the simultaneous truth that they are, in fact, just boots.
What’s Next?
MSCHF as a collective seems to continuously roll out products that raise eyebrows. They have an interesting and complex understanding of how consumerism and over-saturation seemingly go hand in hand these days. This was made overtly apparent in the case of the Big Red Boots. While the MSCHF may appear cartoonish, the art collective is entirely serious about its release. In an interview with the New York Times, they rejected the idea that the boots were a joke. “It’s not a satire,” MSCHF said in a statement to The New York Times, after declining to be interviewed. “But what’s interesting is that we’re at a moment in time where it doesn’t have to be.”
After taking a hiatus from the world of runway shows for three years Heron Preston unveiled his “Anything Goes” Fall/Winter 2023 collection. Set in a Manhattan loft space, the show was an ode to New York, the birthplace of the brand. Several shows in Paris, L.A., as well as digital shows due to the pandemic, have taken place in recent years. However, this was the first time Heron Preston debuted at New York Fashion Week as a solo show.
When asked about the influence of New York on his designs, Preston told Office Magazine, “It’s a big melting pot of so many different cultures, walks of life, languages, and style codes. This is something that this city really gives me that I don’t necessarily get when I go to San Francisco, for example, where I was born and raised. New York has this kind of fresh style, this swagger to it. I hate to use that word but you know what I’m saying? New York has this kind of attitude when it comes to style. . . it’s just so energetic and interesting and it’s never a dull moment.”
Opening the show was a man wearing an orange safety vest painting the concrete floor with white paint. The collection was heavily dripped in utilitarian and workwear-inspired trousers and shirts. Elsewhere, “security” vests and sportswear-inspired pieces such as ski goggles, motorcycle gloves, racing jackets, and shorts were displayed. The streetwear-core aesthetic that designer Heron Preston is accustomed to was also painted across the entire collection.
The New York community also served as inspiration for the collection with looks that embody the cool-kid aesthetics of the Upper East side. Mismatched and layered clothes in a Y2K way were shown, without the tackiness. Appropriately titled, the Heron Preston Fall/Winter collection offered a little bit of everything sprinkled into the collection. In the most stylish way possible. “Anything Goes” was truly the theme of the collection. Puffer jackets were paired over top of a black silk dress with black furry boots. Skirts were layered overtop pants, and faux fur coats were paired with corset tops, shorts, and construction boots.
Highlights of the collection include footwear such as furry boots, chunky dad sneakers, and neon green sneakers. More footwear included faux fur heels, chunky construction boots, and foam slides. Other accessories from the collection include sporty shield sunglasses, furry bags, and leather gloves. Athleisure-approved balaclavas, chainmail balaclavas, “HPNY” and “S.T.F.U” adorned caps and fringe-detailed bags were also showcased.
