Kenny Mason Releases A Surprise Mixtape, ‘Angel Eyes,’ Along With The Joker-Inspired ‘Intuition’ Video

Just days after being announced as an opener on Denzel Curry’s Mischievous South tour, Atlanta grunge-rap upstart Kenny Mason has released a new mixtape, Angel Eyes, along with a video for its song, “Intuition.”

The black-and-white video takes clear inspiration from Heath Ledger’s Joker in the 2008 Batman movie The Dark Knight, as Kenny hangs out the window of a speeding car on a late-night drive, rapping the eerie song’s introspective lyrics.

Angel Eyes is Mason’s second full-length project of 2024; he released 9 in March, touring on the new project throughout the spring on his Route 9 tour.

You can watch the “Intuition” video above.

Angel Eyes is out now via RCA. You can find more info here.

Juvenile Says ‘Back That Azz Up’ Is A Big Hit At Weddings On ‘Fresh Pair’

Uproxx’s Fresh Pair is back with a new season, a new studio, and the same unique insight into the world of hip-hop and sneakers provided by hosts Just Blaze and Katty Customs. This week, they present New Orleans legend Juvenile with a pair of custom Reeboks he prices at $70,000 while reminiscing on the dominance of Cash Money Records in the ’99 and the 2000 — including how big of a hit “Back That Azz Up” has become on the wedding DJ circuit.

After revealing the kicks, Juvie details his experiences with Cash Money building New Orleans’ rap scene almost from scratch, recalls the importance of Soulja Slim to both that scene and Juvie’s own career (he did write “Slow Motion,” after all), and reveals his favorite Cash Money records. Just, Katty, and Juvenile also highlight the creative mayhem and impact of the label’s album cover art, which was notoriously meticulously (and sometimes ridiculously) crafted by in-house designers Pen And Pixel.

Juvenile ranks his albums toward the end of the discussion, after sharing his thoughts on the viral popularity of his NPR Music Tiny Desk Concert. Finally, he shares his advice to creatives, which you don’t want to miss, even if you don’t think that includes you.

Check out the latest episode of Fresh Pair above.

Kanye West’s “Carnival” Producer Goes Scorched Earth On Social Media For Being Left Off The Credits

Digital Nas went on a fiery rant about working with Kanye West and Ty Dolla Sign on the hit song, “Carnival,” on social media. In doing so, he shared an email from A&R Matt Geffen, who allegedly wrote that producers Traxster, 88-Keys, and Morning Estrada “were not able to verify” his involvement in making the track. In response, Nas labeled the group “vultures” and advised followers to shy away from a career in music.

“I’ma give you context to how these vulture-ass n****s work. Fritz [Owens, engineer] text me, ‘Ye and Carti need you.’ I go there. ‘Nas, what do we need done to ‘Carnival’?’ I tell them n****s everything that needs to be done, told Ye to change his verse. ‘Carnival’ gets nominated for a f*cking Grammy, it goes number one. They’re doing the paperwork, this f*cking guy Matt Geffen comes out of nowhere, tries to regulate sh*t.”

Nas continued: “I’m showing y’all this to let y’all know how many vultures are in this music industry […] These n****s are fighting over crumbs. ‘Carnival’ made $47,000 publishing. These n****s is old as f*ck, don’t have no talent. But they use young n****s’ sound and then they try to say they did something on the record when they didn’t do sh*t! But the n****s who actually did sh*t on the record, they take them n****s off! When it’s small records like ‘Paperwork,’ ‘Oh yeah, leave Nas on that.’ But when it’s big records that went number one, ‘Nah, he ain’t do sh*t on that.’ F*ck all y’all n****s!”

Digital Nas Speaks Out On Working With Kanye West

Kanye and Ty Dolla Sign dropped “Carnival” back in February 2024, before it peaked at number one on the US Billboard Hot 100. It’s up for Record of the Year and Song of the Year at the 67th Annual Grammy Awards. Check out Digital Nas’ full comments on working with Kanye West below.

Shyne Apologizes For His Unsavory Comments About Kendrick Lamar

Shyne has apologized for his infamous 2012 criticism of Kendrick Lamar, in which he labeled the now-iconic rapper’s debut album, good kid, m.A.A.d city, “trash.” Taking to Twitter shortly after its release, Shyne wrote that Lamar “is talented with a lot of potential but his album is traaaaash!” Reflecting on the comment during a new appearance on Math Hoffa’s My Expert Opinion podcast, Shyne labeled it a “mistake.”

“I would say I made a mistake about Kendrick Lamar, I will admit to that. I think that was definitely a mistake [laughs],” he said, “I think Drake is nice, Drake is incredible and Lamar has obviously proven me completely wrong, but everybody got it at the time but I was dealing with whatever I was dealing with and I didn’t understand it, I didn’t appreciate it. He’s obviously proven to be one of the greatest musicians in our generation. That’s one I take back.”

Shyne Attends Documentary Premiere

Shyne previously defended his tweet at the time during an interview with Cipha Sounds and Peter Rosenberg, as caught by HipHopDX. He argued: “I’m not talking reckless. I said the young boy got potential and I said he was talented, but the album is trash. That’s tough love. I didn’t attack him as an individual, I didn’t say anything disrespectful. It’s trash! Beats is trash, number one. And once your beats are trash, you’re finished because you can’t handle a good flow. I don’t really want to hear what you gotta say. I’ll go buy Dr. Cornel West’s album if I want to hear someone talk.”

Shyne Reflects On Criticism Of Kendrick Lamar

Shyne’s appearance on the My Expert Opinion podcast comes after the release of his new documentary for Hulu, The Honorable Shyne. Check out Shyne’s latest stance on Kendrick Lamar below.

Meek Mill Goes Off On Outlets Spreading Salacious Rumors About Him & Diddy

Rumors of an alleged sexual relationship between Meek Mill and Diddy have been circulating for some time now. They were sparked back in February when producer Rodney “Lil Rod” Jones sued the Bad Boy founder for alleged grooming and more. In the lawsuit, Lil Rod alleges that Diddy had a sexual relationship with “a Philadelphia rapper who dated Nicki Minaj.” This eventually led to theories that he was referring to Meek Mill, which has not been confirmed.

Meek Mill has become a frequent target for online hate and clowning regardless, and he’s had enough. Earlier today, he took to X to respond to various reports that Diddy hosted a wild birthday party for him in 2014. “None of these publications are owned by black men posting things to destroy the names and brands of the culture! Ima stand on this I know it’s somebody behind this! Ima start a war behind it too when I find out!!!!” he captioned the post.

Meek Mill Declares War On Whoever Is Behind Diddy Rumors

Meek Mill continued, also arguing that there’s a “war on Black men” and slamming publications for spreading lies about him. “Just think about it you are waking up to a bunch of non black owned publication posting major lies about me! Where all the pr people go that was around me! Everybody see what’s going on I’m not gonna be quiet it’s was war on black men!” he wrote.

Meek Mill’s post comes just a few days after a clip of him went viral. In it, he seemingly shuts down rumors that he’s affiliated with Diddy in any way. “This is real life,” he says. “No Diddy gang. Meek Milly in real life. Don’t ever disrespect me.” This earned a reaction from one of Diddy’s sons, Justin Combs, who later made it clear that he was disappointed by the video. “Smh,” Justin wrote simply alongside a face-palm emoji following the viral moment.

Tems Combines Afrobeats With Jamaican Flavor In Her Steamy ‘Turn Me Up’ Video

In the past few years, Tems has become known as one of the foremost ambassadors of the African pop scene. In 2022, she became the first African artist to debut at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100; last year, she and several of her countrymen performed at the NBA All-Star Game; and this year, she released her debut album, Born In The Wild, and went on her first headlining tour to promote it.

Today, she dropped the video for album standout, “Turn Me Up,” which combines her R&B-flavored approach to African pop sounds with Caribbean flair, adding a little dancehall styling to the already heady brew. For the video, she went straight to the source, shooting in Jamaica with director Loris Russier, highlighting the natural beauty of the island and the grittiness of its urban additions. Throughout the video, Jamaican rudeboys mean mug the camera to let viewers know that while the island is a gorgeous place to live, you’ve still got to be tough to survive there.

2024 continued to be a banner year for Tems, as she was also nominated for three Grammy Awards: Best R&B Song (“Burning”), Best African Music Performance (“Love Me JeJe”), and Best Global Music Album (Born In The Wild). We’ll see how she fares at the 67th Grammy Awards next year.

Jelly Roll Reveals How He’s Lost Over 100 Pounds This Year

How did Jason Bradley DeFord get the name he uses professionally, Jelly Roll? “My mother named me that whenever I was a little chubby kid,” the “I Am Not Okay” singer once explained on The Bobby Bones Show. “Been fat my whole life. I spent the next 30 years trying to grow into the name, I think I’ve done it. I obviously look the part.”

That’s beginning to change, however.

Jelly Roll has lost over 100 pounds this year alone, including 60 to 70 pounds since his Beautifully Broken Tour kicked off in August. “The battle was with the food addiction, changing the way I’ve looked at food for the last 39 years,” he shared to People. “I’ve never had a healthy relationship with food, so that was the hard part. But once you get into that discipline and commitment, it’s like an avalanche. Once that little snowball started rolling, it was on its way.”

He continued, “It’s cool because there was once a time in life that the culture I built on tour was the opposite. It revolved around alcohol and drugs. And now our tour culture is around good eating and around exercising and doing emotional check-ins with our crew every day… I hope I continue to lose this weight.”

Next year, Jelly Roll is hitting the road with Post Malone on The Big Ass Stadium Tour. You can see the dates here.

Diddy’s Beverly Hills Home Attracts $30M Offer From Buyer Of Kanye West’s Malibu Mansion

Earlier this month, it was revealed that Diddy’s Beverly Hills mansion wasn’t budging, despite going up for sale in September. The Bad Boy mogul is currently facing a slew of serious and disturbing allegations and is behind bars awaiting trial. TMZ previously reported that this could explain why nobody was looking to purchase the 17K-square-foot property. Sources told the outlet that only a few potential buyers had done walk-throughs, and that nobody was really interested due to its “ick factor.”

Now, however, Bo Belmont of Belwood Investments has announced that he’s put in an offer. Reportedly, he’s offering $30 million, which is far below the asking price. Diddy’s looking to rake in a whopping $61.5 million, over $20 million more than he bought it for in 2014. Realtors have described that asking price as “ridiculous,” however, so it’s unclear whether or not Diddy would be willing to go any lower.

Bo Belmont Puts In Offer On Diddy’s Beverly Hills Home Months After Buying Kanye West’s Malibu Home

This wouldn’t be the first celebrity home Belmont and his company acquired, as he also recently purchased Kanye West’s mansion in Malibu. Allegedly, Ye started to transform the home into a bomb shelter but never followed through before selling it. During an interview with The Los Angeles Times in September, Belmont criticized the renovations Ye had already made to the home, arguing that they were pointless and ruined the place.

“That was a really d*mb move. Really no purpose,” he claimed. “He single-handedly destroyed this architectural masterpiece. My goal is to make it as though Kanye was never there. The house will be restored right back to what it was. It would have required extensive review… There’s a process to it and he does things his own way, and the city of Malibu, they don’t care who you are they’ll hold you accountable.”

YNW Melly Could Reportedly Be Released Soon Unless Officials Prove Bond Shouldn’t Be Granted

Recently, YNW Melly’s attorney Michael A. Pizzi Jr. filed a 12-page lawsuit against the Broward Sheriff’s Office. In it, he alleges that his client is being kept in inhumane conditions, including solitary confinement for around three years with no visits or phone calls. Allegedly, Melly’s lawyers have also struggled to communicate with him, been denied entry to the prison, and more. Pizzi Jr. alleges that all of this violates Melly’s first, fifth, sixth, eighth, and fourteenth amendment rights.

“We are asking a Federal Judge to Order the immediate release of Jemell Demons (a.k.a. Melly) because the Broward County jail system has been violating his Constitutional Rights,” Pizzi Jr. told XXL of the lawsuit. “The refusal to let Melly see his family and the interference on his legal representation violates the Constitution and cannot be allowed to stand and will not be allowed to stand.” Now, according to the outlet, Judge Melissa Damian has responded to the lawsuit.

Broward County Sheriff’s Office Has Until December 6 To Prove Their Case

“On or before December 6, 2024, the Respondents shall file a memorandum of fact and law to show cause why this Petition should not be granted, and shall file therewith all documents and transcripts necessary for the resolution of this Petition,” her ruling reads. If the response is not submitted by December 6, Melly could reportedly be released on bond ahead of his upcoming retrial. If they do respond, Melly has two weeks to fire back.

The Broward Sheriff’s Office shared a statement with XXL about the lawsuit, defending themselves. “The Broward Sheriff’s Office does not generally comment on pending litigation,” it begins. “However, the jail does not utilize ‘solitary confinement.’ Rather, Mr. Demons has been placed on administrative segregation, which is a classification resulting in an alternate living assignment for an inmate whose placement in the general population poses a serious threat to the safety of staff or inmates, or life and property.”

TDE’s Annual Holiday Concert Returns For 2025 With Doechii, SZA, Schoolboy Q, And Surprise Guests

Top Dawg is for the kids. For the past 12ish years (give or take a pandemic shutdown), TDE, the South Los Angeles-based label that homes music from rap stars like Ab-Soul and Schoolboy Q, R&B queen SZA, and breakout artist of 2024, Doechii, has held a holiday concert at the Nickerson Gardens housing project in Watts for the community. Top Dawg has announced the date for this year’s iteration (December 12), which will feature the above-mentioned artists, along with fellow TDE signees Isaiah Rashad, Jay Rock, Kal Banx, Ray Vaughn, SiR, and Ray Vaughn, as well as surprise guests.

In the past, that latter category has included stars like A$AP Ferg, Big Sean, Rihanna, and Travis Scott, as well as former TDE golden boy Kendrick Lamar. The best part about the concert isn’t that it’s basically free, though; it’s that the price of admission is an unwrapped toy, which will be distributed in Nickerson Gardens (where Anthony “Top Dawg” Tiffith grew up) the next day. So, if you want to see a great concert, all you have to do is something nice for the community! It’s a good deal!

In addition to the performances, the event also usually includes food trucks and other activities, while the next day will be Community Giveback day, with barbering services, family holiday photos, raffles, sports activities, and of course, the toy giveaway. There’s also a job fair with onsite employment opportunities. Top Dawg is for everybody.

You can find more information about the 11th annual TDE Christmas Concert + Toy Drive below.
