7 Of The Best ‘80s R&B Groups

The 80s were an amazing time for R&B. From the explosive fashion, to the new emphasis on contemporary R&B, the decade was stacked with amazing group talents. Moreover, the success of the time helped to ignite an even greater popularity by the time the 90s came around. From New Edition, to the soulful crooners of Atlantic Starr, these are the seven best groups that helped shape R&B in the 80s.

New Edition

New Edition are a staple of 80s R&B. They initially began as a modern rendition of the superstar group, the Jackson 5. However, it didn’t take long for them to establish their own unique sound and look. In fact, many people consider them to be the “original boy band.” The group, which is still active today, consists of Ricky Bell, Michael Bivins, Bobby Brown, Ronnie DeVoe, Johnny Gill, and Ralph Tresvant. Some of their most iconic songs include “Mr. Telephone Man” and “Candy Girl.” New Edition is arguably the most popular R&B group of the 80s, and have since been inducted into the Black Music & Entertainment Walk of Fame.

The Gap Band

The Gap Band was named after the Greenwood, Archer, and Pine streets in Tulsa Oklahoma. Formed by the Wilson brothers: Charlie, Ronnie, and Robert, the Gap Band was known for their dance beats and high-energy songs. This was best exemplified in songs such as “Outstanding” and “You Dropped A Bomb On Me,” becoming quick staples of the 80s R&B scene

DeBarge

DeBarge initially started with just three of the DeBarge brothers. However, in the decade that they were active, different members of the family joined the band. As a result, they evolved into creating fuller sounds and melodies, garnering a booming fanbase. At the height of their fame, they released their fourth album, Rhythm Of The Night. The title track went on to become their most popular song to date, hitting the third spot on the Billboard Hot 100.

Atlantic Starr

Despite a rotating roster of band members, Atlantic Starr was one of the dominant R&B groups of the 80s with hit after hit. They are most known for their immaculate single, “Always,” which peaked atop the Billboard Hot 100. Furthermore, their catalog of hits also includes songs like “Secret Lovers,” which made the top 10 in both the US and UK, and “Masterpiece.” Overall, their romantic and soulful R&B won them a diverse fanbase, during the 80s, and beyond.

Mary Jane Girls

The Mary Jane Girls were a girl group formed by Rick James in 1983. Though their career only lasted five years, they were able to make a big impact in a little time. Songs like “In My House“ and “All Night Long” became fan favorites. Beyond the music, Mary Jane Girls was also known for the unique individual styles of its members. Rick James famously cast each member of the group as a character archetype, including: the street girl, the model, the cheerleader, and the dominatrix.

Lisa Lisa And Cult Jam

Lisa Velez’s booming vocals and general mystique were at the front and center of the success of Lisa Lisa & Cult Jam. The band was put together by Full Force after Velez auditioned for them and they realized that they couldn’t let her talent go. Throughout the 80s, they released R&B hit after hit. This includes their debut single “I Wonder If I Take You Home,” which was an instant chart-topper, to later hits like “Head To Toe,” and “Lost In Emotion.”

Cameo

Cameo’s music incorporated sounds of funk, disco, Hip Hop and R&B, setting them apart from their peers. They found mainstream success in the late 70s with tracks like “I Just Want To Be,” and rode that success into the 1980s. Cameosis, their fifth album, topped the R&B charts and was their second album to be certified Gold. After the success of the album, they began to churn out Gold-certified albums like no man’s business. They have continued to refine their sound through the years.

Andre 3000 Says That He Sees Himself In Teezo Touchdown And Tyler, The Creator

Andre 3000 shocked the music industry with his brand-new album, New Blue Sun, this past Friday, November 17. It was a triumphant day, to say the least, to check out unheard music from the legend. While some were let down by the fact that it was an instrumental album, the pieces of music within the tracklist were absolutely beautiful. He made something that was true to him and it is easily one of the best projects of the year.

Because of this eight-song project, he has been the talk of the town recently. He has done some interviews with large publications like GQ. It was interesting to hear his insight on what compelled him to come out with this album. There were a lot of things to take away from this sit-down, one of them being who he feels represents him musically today.

Against popular belief, there are plentiful amounts of experimental artists in rap today. Two of those include Tyler, The Creator and Teezo Touchdown. Both have their idiosyncracies and are always looking toward the future of what still can be done with music. Well, both of them got a huge shoutout from Andre in the clip above. “I see it visually. I see it more in spirit and people pushing things and trying things, and I love the spirit.” He continues, “Like you see Tyler and them, you see Teezo Touchdown and those guys and you’re like, ‘ah.’” 3000 further explains that they are not copycats, but yet a new version of him that is unique. “The coolest thing is it’s not like a signing, it’s not like a copy. It’s the next, it’s a lineage.”

What are your initial thoughts on Andre 3000 saying he sees and hears himself in Tyler, The Creator, and Teezo Touchdown’s music? Are these two artists the most accurate representation of 3000’s style? Do both of them have the most creativity in music right now? We would like to hear what you have to say about all of this. ASAP Rocky Shooting Case Going To Trial, Judge Finds Probable Cause: Report

ASAP Rocky’s court case and trial for an alleged 2021 assault in Hollywood, in which he stands accused of shooting ASAP Relli, just got some crucial updates, according to Meghann Cuniff on one end and TMZ on the other. Moreover, on Monday afternoon (November 20), the Los Angeles judge in this case ruled that there is enough probable cause, as determined by preliminary hearings, to support his present charges of two counts of first-degree assault with a firearm. As such, the case will move to a trial in the near future. Cuniff also indicated that the court will arraign the rapper on January 8.

Not only that, but according to TMZ, prosecutors submitted what they claim is video evidence on Monday of ASAP Rocky holding a gun before shooting his colleague. While he isn’t very identifiable in the footage in question, attorneys opposing him from across the courtroom are dead-set on defending this. For assistance, Los Angeles Police Department detective Frank Flores testified that they found the clip while investigating the case. Throughout this testimony, the publication also reported that the New York MC remained calm and collected. Now that this is officially moving to trial, perhaps the two will reconsider reports that they were hashing out a settlement.

ASAP Rocky To Be Arraigned For Shooting Case On Jan. 8, Meghan Cuniff Reports

In addition, prosecutors also presented alleged audio-centric footage of the two shots that ASAP Rocky allegedly fired off at his fellow Mob affiliate. However, as of writing this article, there is no unquestionable footage available of the shooting itself. For those unaware, ASAP Relli claims that his group mate shot his hand, and also made various statements about his mental state throughout it all. Not only that, but the court also saw body cam footage from seven police officers. Furthermore, these cops arrived at the scene of the incident and scoured for clues, evidence, and any other relevant information present.

After their efforts, they announced that they did not find a firearm anywhere on the premises. ASAP Relli’s side of the story is that he and ASAP Rocky feuded for a while before this alleged shooting. His testimony alleged that the father of two put the weapon up against him, placed directly on his stomach. While he didn’t shoot in that moment, Relli claims that shots rang out shortly after they moved apart- four, to be exact- and that he ran away. Contrary to police reports, Relli also alleged that he found a pair of 9mm shell casings when he returned to the supposed crime scene later that night. Law enforcement and forensics experts did not identify any fingerprints on the casings that he presented.

Craig Mack’s “Project: Funk Da World” Turns 29

In 1994, after a slow, but steady ascent in his musical career, Craig Mack released his breakout single “Flava In Ya Ear.” That song marked the beginning of the rapper’s rise and ended up as the lead single from his debut album. The album in question is called Project: Funk Da World and it turned 29 years old in September. Project: Funk Da World is the first of three albums Craig Mack released, and it is also the most successful. The rapper sadly passed away in 2018 due to heart failure, but through his musical works, his legacy lives on. Project: Funk Da World remains the most exceptional of them all, standing as a testament to Mack’s talent and creativity.

How Project: Funk Da World Was Conceived

Project: Funk Da World was released on September 20, 1994, under Bad Boy Records. It was during this period that Bad Boy Records, founded by Sean “Puff Daddy” Combs, started gaining traction in the Hip Hop industry. Craig Mack had a raw talent and unique style that convinced Puff Daddy to sign him to Bad Boy Records. Subsequently, Project: Funk Da World was released, marking Craig Mack’s debut full-length album release.

Craig Mack Dishes Out A Funk-Rap Debut

The album’s title suggests a fusion of funk and Hip Hop elements, and it surely delivers on its promise. A union of funk-inspired beats with Mack’s lyrical world created a sound that was both groovy and impactful. Craig Mack employed a sharp, lyrical style and showcased his confidence and dexterity. He also demonstrated his proficiency throughout the album, riding each groovy beat effortlessly. At its heart, Project: Funk Da World is a party record, just as much as it is a proper rap album. It is evident in the undeniable bounce present throughout the album’s runtime. Overall, Project: Funk Da World was a brave attempt at a fusion rap album, and Craig Mack successfully executed his ambitious goal.

Collaborators On The Album

Funk Da World would not be the sonic delight it is without the input of the people who worked on it alongside Craig Mack. It took a village, backed by the production talents of Easy Mo Bee, Rashad Smith, Sean Combs, Lenny Marrow, and Mack himself. They all came together to create a cohesive body of work marked by infectious funk beats. Evidently, the beats provided a vibrant backdrop for Mack’s energetic and charismatic delivery.

However, the only artist featured on the 11-track album is Puff Daddy, who appears on the track “Making Moves With Puff.” Two other songs were released as singles. These were: “Get Down,” and the popular lead single, “Flava in Ya Ear.” Peaking at number nine on the Billboard Hot 100, “Flava in Ya Ear” was the most successful single of Mack’s career.

A Critical Success

Project: Funk Da World received mostly positive reviews from critics and listeners who praised the skillful rhymes of Craig Mack. Moreover, the album’s production was especially lauded for its unique take on a funk-rap hybrid. The album, alongside The Notorious BIG’s Ready To Die, contributed to the early success of Bad Boy Records. Unfortunately, as Ready To Die was released just a week before Mack’s album, it attracted most of the attention. As a result, Funk Da World did not attain the heights of commercial success it had the potential to reach, despite its critical acclaim.

Craig Mack Lives On

While Craig Mack did not enjoy the same longevity as some of his peers, his debut album remains a classic in the Hip Hop community. It not only established him as a notable rapper but also played a crucial role in shaping the early identity of Bad Boy Records. The rapper may be gone now, but there’s no erasing his album. Without a doubt, Project: Funk Da World will continue to live on as a significant work in Hip Hop history.

Latto Believes She Is The Top Female Rapper From Atlanta

We continuously mention how dense the population is in the female rap scene. It is especially so, because of the rise of TikTok and viral hits. One of the artists to really come up in that time frame was Latto. However, she is steadily separating herself from the pack of one-hit wonders. Her popularity is rising because of the amount of quality tracks she has out. The Ohio native has a lot of talent to compete with some of the veterans in the game like Nicki Minaj, Cardi B, and others. Latto herself is starting to recognize that now it seems as the days go on.

One thing she can have that no one else can say they possess is the fastest song to a billion streams on Spotify. While she did not accomplish this feat on her own, Latto deserves just as much credit for it. The Atlanta-raised artist teamed up with BTS superstar, Jung Kook, for “Seven.” It took the crossover duo only three and a half months. Latto was extremely thankful for the opportunity for a lot of reasons.

After all of this success, at such a young age as well, she has every right to feel confident in her abilities. That is what she expressed in a recent feature interview with XXL. “Am I the First Lady of Atlanta? I do feel like I’m the frontrunner for female rap in Atlanta. I will say that. I agree with it. Yeah, I think I am.” However, she still remained humble. “I think there’s a lot more work to be done for it to be cemented. There’s definitely a lot more work.” Congratulations to Latto on all of her success, she is going to be around for a long time.

What are your initial thoughts on Latto stating that she is the best female rapper from Atlanta? Is she the best female rapper going right now? What songs do you like the most by here? Mariah The Scientist Reposts Critique Of Pitchfork Calling Andre 3000’s Album “Rap”

André 3000’s new album New Blue Sun couldn’t be farther from a rap album in most people’s eyes- or ears, rather. Moreover, many folks took issue with Pitchfork‘s review of it- not because of the score (8.3, Best New Music), but because of the categorization. Instead of “New Age,” “Jazz,” “Ambient,” or other appropriate genres that describe the flute-heavy, fully instrumental project, the publication put it under the “Rap/Experimental” genre. Mariah The Scientist agrees with this criticism, as she reposted a tweet on it on her Instagram Story on Monday (November 20).

“André 300 did NOTHING but play the FLUTE and they STILL labeled it a RAP album,” the tweet in question reads. “Do we not see the problem with this?” However, before we get ahead of ourselves, there’s a legitimate reason for this categorization that might calm Mariah The Scientist down. Pitchfork designed their content management system (CMS) that they use to publish work and organize it in the “backend” so that the genre of an album ties to the principal genre of its artist. As such, since they have the Outkast member as mostly a rap and experimental artist, they couldn’t change the genre to reflect New Blue Sun‘s direction.

So, with that in mind, maybe you understand the music media icons a little bit more. But the criticism itself is very valid and applicable to other people’s discussions around the project. In fact, it’s something that the 26-year-old has addressed about her own music. “I put music out, and it’s automatically supposed to be R&B?” Mariah The Scientist asked Complex during a video interview.

“Anybody that sings and is Black, or they think you Black… they, like, put you in this category of ‘She makes R&B music,’” she continued. “But if Lana Del Rey is singing about heartbreak, why [do they categorize] her album as alternative? But I put music out, and it’s automatically R&B? What if it’s neither of those? I told somebody that I wanted to make a new genre and I wanted to call it A&B for alternative and blues. I don’t know if it will happen, but if I did have to categorize myself, it would be that.” For more news and the latest updates on Mariah The Scientist and André 3000, log back into HNHH.

Young Thug’s Latest Attempt To Have RICO Case Thrown Out Is Denied

Judge Ural Glanville in Georgia has denied Young Thug’s motion to have his RICO case thrown out. The rapper’s attorney, Brian Steel, argued that the grand jury failed to properly accuse Young Thug of knowingly committing the allegations in the original indictment.

“Mr. Williams is innocent of all charges in the above-referenced indictment,” Steel wrote in the motion. “The grand jury wrongfully re-indicted Mr. Williams in the above-reference case on or about October 5, 2022 in count one – conspiracy to violate the Racketeer Influence and Corrupt Organizations Act; count 56 and 57 – participation in criminal street gang activity; counts 58, 59 and 60 – violation of Georgia Controlled Substances Act; count 61 – possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony; and count 62 – possession of a machine gun.”

Glanville disagreed with Steel’s argument, instead suggesting that the language used was sufficient. “I find that the state’s indictment tracks the language of the statute and is sufficient therein for counts one, 56, 57, 58, 59 and 60, 61 and 62 as it pertains to the state versus Mr. Jeffery Williams,” the judge said. “For those reasons, the court is going to deny the defendant’s plea and bar motion to dismiss general demurrer.”

In the end, Glanville noted that Thug could still appeal his initial ruling, but that it “won’t stop the trial of this matter.” The decision comes as opening statements are scheduled to begin on November 27. While Thug waits behind bars, his partner, Mariah The Scientist, recently revealed that the two intend to get married when he’s a free man. During a recent interview, she added that she thinks about what life will be like once Thug gets out “all day long.” “I feel like being imaginative can help every human being on earth not lose your mind. It is like a little slight state of delusion,” she said. Be on the lookout for further updates on Young Thug’s case on HotNewHipHop.

Is Tyla Black?

tyla

With “Water” singer Tyla growing in popularity after being nominated for a Grammy and collaborating with Travis Scott on the remix of the breakout hit, fans are rightfully more curious about the 21-year-old Johannesburg native than ever. However, as discussions on social media have shown, as global music becomes more popular in the United States, music fans will also be experiencing more culture shock as they encounter different perspectives from around the world (like the metric system).

One of the questions that fans have been asking since Tyla’s breakout is whether the South African singer is Black. With bios identifying her heritage as Indian, Irish, Mauritian, and Zulu, there are more than a few fans who have found confusion in the classification, especially as two different viewpoints on race clash. While in the US, the South Africa-born artist would be considered Black, which is broadly a descriptor for people of native African descent, in South Africa, she would be considered “coloured,” a somewhat dated designation reserved for people of mixed ancestry.

Although the term was enforced by a now-defunct colonial government, its impact remains in how people see themselves and classify race in South Africa (a stark reminder that race is just a construct, and a very clunky one at that). While “colored” remains a charged term in the US due to the legacy of slavery and Jim Crow, South Africa is far less removed from its history of apartheid segregation (which only ended 30 years ago). The two nations have largely separate views of race, but the one thing that both should agree on is that all people deserve respect and basic human dignity despite their origins or skin color (or whether a pencil sticks in their hair).

The important thing to focus on is Tyla’s musical success, though. She’s the first South African artist to chart in the US in over 50 years; that’s impressive no matter who someone is.

Ralo Blocked From Social Media, His Team Announces

Ralo’s recent release from jail after a multi-year sentence gave him much reason to celebrate with his loved ones this month. However, that’s by no means to say that he still doesn’t face challenges in this return to regular life, especially when it relates to his career and connection with fans. Moreover, the rapper’s team announced that folks in charge of what’s assumedly his post-prison reformative program restricted all of his social media platforms. That means that he won’t be able to engage with fans on the Internet, and that his team is managing things right now. Ironically, via an Instagram post, the 32-year-old’s entourage let his followers know they’re working hard to connect him back to them.

“We thought that we would be able to welcome Ralo home in peace. But he has been restricted from all social media platforms until he completes his program,” the post reads. “Please know that we are getting these matters resolved at this very moment, so he can do his BIGG one. We will continue to post and engage with everyone that’s supporting Ralo ‘First Day Out‘ video and single. We will install over 100 billboards across the country [and] over 10 thousand posters. [We’ll] push his single in every club and radio station. His first welcome home party will be held in Atlanta at the Josephine Lounge. Please stay tuned for all other dates… #WelcomeHome.”

Furthermore, seemingly before this restriction, Ralo let folks know that his return to the rap game has been a great one. Most importantly, it’s been without any beef and with a lot of support. “Idk why da f**k all the blogs acting as if I got out on sum beef S**t,” he commented. “But let’s be clear – Money Bagg became Muslim since I been down. I forever put Islam over everything so it’s no beef in my heart at all for him. Boggie, Mozzy, 42, G or whoever amongst him. I’m just #TeamDolph so the internet just gone stir up s**t.”

Meanwhile, other MCs supported the Atlanta native financially throughout this ordeal. Artists like Lil Baby and others gave him cash to welcome him back. Even though things are still tough for him, he has a great network of artists to pull him out. Let’s see how long this restriction lasts. Adele Claims To Be Married To Rich Paul Again During A Recent Comedy Show

One of the biggest and most beloved pop and soul stars of this generation, Adele is always someone who loves to tease her fans. It is an endearing part of her personality and a lot of people have supported her throughout her career. She is also an inspiring figure, especially after her incredible weight loss journey. Adele is a role model for many young women. It makes sense why she is currently coupled up with maybe the top sports agent in the world, Rich Paul. A Cleveland, Ohio native through and through, he adopted the blue-collar mentality as a young man and now runs one of the most successful sports agencies, that being Klutch Sports.

These two successful stars have been together for about two years and have constantly hinted at engagement and marriage. Rich Paul left it up to everyone’s imagination after an interview back in September with CBS Mornings. Adele also did it at a recent show of hers. Now, we have another nugget that this could happen any day now.

According to Economic Times and Jasmine Brand, she was in attendance at one of her close friend’s comedy shows in Los Angeles. Alan Carr is his name, and he also hails from the UK. What got people buzzing at the show was this question posed. Carr asked if anyone had said “I do” lately, and Adele shouted out that she had done just that. Deuxmoi shared some submissions of people who were also at the event and they detailed that part of the show. On face value, this seems fishy. Especially because Adele was at the relatively private show of a dear friend. There is certainly a chance that these two planned this portion of the show ahead of time to get people riled up about her relationship with Paul. This is all speculation of course, but it could be something to keep in mind.

What are your initial thoughts on Adele claiming she and Rich Paul said their “I do’s?” Do you think is just something to get people talking or do you buy it?
