Lenny Kravitz Believes Black Media Has Ignored His Contributions To Music

Lenny Kravitz is one of the biggest rock artists of the late 1990s and 2000s, cranking out hit after hit and making a name for himself as one of the genre’s main commercial exponents of the time. However, in his view, there was always one blind spot when it came to his appeal. Moreover, the superstar musician recently spoke in an interview cover story on how Black media like BET or The Source Awards doesn’t give him his due flowers despite his accolades from other organizations and his art as a whole. It’s very hard to pinpoint why this could be the case, but it’s nevertheless an interesting and important conversation to have.

“To this day, I have not been invited to a BET thing or a Source Awards thing,” Lenny Kravitz expressed. “And it’s like, here is a Black artist who has reintroduced many Black art forms, who has broken down barriers. Just like those that came before me broke down. That is positive. And they don’t have anything to say about it?” On social media, many users debated as to why this is, bringing up other examples and using different forms of analyses. It’s also worth noting that he has no shortage of collaborations with other Black artists.

For example, many pointed out that Prince did not have this issue despite falling into the rock realm that Lenny Kravitz inhabits. In addition, folks debated whether rock music is considered a Black art form in the 21st century, with many rightfully pointing out that the genre owes its existence to African Americans. Furthermore, they posited this as a reason as to why maybe these outlets haven’t given him his due recognition, even with his recent work that can fall on the shoulders of his legacy. Others called into question the 59-year-old’s quality of output over the years, and the theory that he never really presented himself as an artist for Black media to celebrate in the first place.

On that last note, some people believe that Kravitz always aimed for a white audience, but he became too big of an artist that is still relevant today for this to truly be the case. As such, this is still up for debate and perhaps we will never truly know why. For now, though, we can use this as a learning example, especially when genre blends are more commonplace than ever in the industry. Something About Jay-Z’s ‘The Book Of HOV’ Auction Sure Makes It Look Like He’s Planning A New Album

Jay-Z has sparked speculation over whether the rapper might have a new album on the way. The theories started through his The Book Of HOV exhibit auction in the Brooklyn Public Library, according to People Magazine. He had a depiction for each of his 13 albums, but there was an empty spot for a 14th one — which could very well get filled soon.

In the photo of the raffle item, it was a signed leather case that had each of the albums printed as commemorative library cards. Yet, there is a clear gap after his 4:44 album, raising questions about why that was left empty. (13 is also an odd number, so maybe they just wanted even rows.)

However, Jay-Z has also discussed that he would need to return on his terms, according to an interview he did with Gayle King.

“I’ll say I wanna make music, but it has to be something important,” Jay-Z told King when asked about new music. “I don’t wanna just make a bunch of tunes. That’s not gonna serve me. It won’t feed me, first of all. I have to be saying something important. It has to mean something, you know? It has to mean something to a larger society.”

T.I. Regrets Gucci Mane Reconciliation Not Happening Sooner

For fans of the Atlanta trap scene- or rap in general, at this point- the feud between T.I. and Gucci Mane should come as no surprise. For those unaware, though, a brief history: back in 2012, Gucci and Jeezy were also at odds, with Tip siding firmly with the latter. Then, Guwop took shots at his Atlanta trap predecessor, which he dodged by deeming him as unimportant, and later claimed that he invented trap music, which T.I. was obviously quick to correct. Furthermore, a couple more shots were fired, there were some more claims and side-taking, but things died down a little bit in the coming years.

As such, it was a welcome and heartening surprise when the two rappers patched things up at Gucci Mane’s Breath Of Fresh Air album release party in October of this year in their home city. However, T.I. thinks that they should’ve landed on this bread-breaking way sooner. Moreover, he reflected on this with DJ Whoo Kid on his podcast Whoo’s House last week (at press time). While the Trap Muzik icon doesn’t necessarily see it as a thing to “make up” over, he did acknowledge that they let things go too far in their beef.

T.I. Reflects On Patching Things Up With Gucci Mane: Watch

“I don’t know what you mean by ‘made up;’ you make up with a girlfriend,” T.I. told the host, which could’ve been a joke or a serious issue with how the story is framed. Regardless, he went on to speak briefly but earnestly about his mended relationship with Gucci Mane. “We both enjoyed ourselves, I think, you know what I’m saying? Meanwhile, he was one of many people who praised the reconciliation between Gucci and Jeezy back in 2020. With that and other examples, we know that the 43-year-old always puts the past behind him, as long as folks deserve it. Keri Hilson Recalls Nearly “Scrapping” With Teairra Mari, She Fires Back

During her recent appearance on the R&B Money podcast, Keri Hilson reflected on a time when a fellow artist wasn’t willing to show her love at one of her performances. According to the songstress, the unnamed woman came as a guest to one of Hilson’s close friends, and ended up in the front row. Unfortunately, she didn’t appear to be feeling the show, which rubbed Hilson the wrong way.

She explained how later in the evening, her friend and his guest dropped by her dressing room, where she chose to address the situation. The encounter got ugly, however, and Hilson claims it nearly resulted in them getting into a fight. “When you’re a performer, you know we know how important it is to give love to other performers,” she explained. “I had to say something.”

“So when they came to my dressing room backstage, I said something and we almost got to scrapping.” Hilson went on, explaining how she thought the woman was being “intentionally rude” by refusing to show any enthusiasm. “Like you want to get slapped, that’s how I felt,” she noted. While Hilson didn’t call the woman out by name at any point in the interview, some suspected that she was referring to Teairra Mari. Mari appeared to confirm this in the comments section of The Neighborhood Talk, threatening to “whoop” Hilson’s “a**” in the process.

21 Savage Honored By Arsenal FC

Arsenal FC honored 21 Savage as the British-born rapper took in the team’s game in the Champions League. Arsenal presented Savage with a custom #21 Savage jersey. The #21 jersey is currently worn by Fábio Vieira, who joined the Gunners from Porto in 2022. After the game, Savage also linked up with Emil Smith Rowe, Arsenal’s 23-year-old midfielder. Also following the game, the Emirates Stadium made sure to play Savage’s bar from “Circo Loco” about the team winning the Premier League.

Savage couldn’t have picked a better game to attend. Arsenal dismantled French side Lens, scoring six goals to officially win their Champions League group. However, Arsenal have one more match in the group stage. The Gunners travel to the Netherlands to face second-place PSV in mid-December. Furthermore, Arsenal currently sits at the top of the Premier League. A late goal at away against Brentford over the weekend moved them one point clear of Manchester City.

21 Savage Performs First London Concert

The visit to the Emirates served as the lead-in for what will be Savage’s first show in the English capital. Immigration issues over the last few years meant that Savage, despite being born in the UK, couldn’t leave the US. If he had, there would have been grounds to deport, and even potentially detain, him. However, Savage was finally able to secure his green card, allowing him to travel back to the UK and the wider expanse of Europe.

However, Savage is expected back in the US next month. December 21 is “21 Savage Day” in Atlanta and ever since the holiday was declared, Savage has always made an effort to bring some holiday cheer to the city. The Game’s Sexual Assault Accuser Claims He’s Only Paid $500K Of $7M Judgement

The Game’s 44th birthday recently came and went, an occasion that actually had him feeling quite emotional over his love for his daughter, Cali. However, that celebration quickly became a point that shielded him from other issues in his legal life. Moreover, Priscilla Rainey- who accused the rapper of sexual assault back in 2015- claims that he’s only paid $500K of the $7 million judgement that the court entitled her to. This is according to court documents reportedly obtained by Radar Online, and the incident itself dates back to his VH1 dating show She’s Got Game. At that point, the California MC allegedly sexually abused her, claims which he has denied for almost a decade at this point.

Furthermore, this claim of innocence fueled The Game and his manager Wack 100 to eschew payments to Rainey. For those unaware, this case led to a failure to get her lump sum in the lawsuit, but still won the $7 million judgement. After this failure for Rainey to reimburse and a dismissed motion for a new trial, she reportedly gained access to royalties from his album Born 2 Rap and ownership of his independent label, Prolific Records. Wack stood by the claim that he still owns those royalties, whereas his client’s often said in interviews that he doesn’t plan on coughing this dough up.

Not only that, but back in 2021, Priscilla Rainey motioned to access his revenue from The Game and Wack 100’s alleged “shell companies,” and accused her alleged abuser of committing fraud by flip-flopping money, finances, and asset rights between these businesses and his management. ““To date, after years of multi-state litigation to discover and executive on [his] assets, Rainey has collected approximately $500,000.00 on the $7,130,100.00 Judgment, which is exclusive of interest and costs,” her attorney expressed via written statement in her latest motion’s filing.

“[Wack 100] and [The Game] conspired together to transfer and conceal [The Game’s] assets by transferring them among themselves and shell companies under their control,” the motion continued. “No one need guess about [their] intent to not pay the Judgment owed by [him] to Rainey, as they have made it abundantly clear in various social media posts that they never intend to pay a dime to Rainer on her judgment.” Earlier this year, she seemed to also try to use Universal Music Group to seize these assets and finances. The hitmaker posted a cinematic trailer for their collaboration, which has been in the making for quite some time. The collection includes a new version of their iconic Royal Oak watch, as well as t-shirts, hoodies, pajamas, hats, and more.

“IT took me and the gang 4years. And now it’s time literally Never been more excited From Houston to Switzerland,” he captioned the dramatic, fuzzy trailer. The collection is scheduled to drop tomorrow (December 1). The CEO of Audemars Piguet, François-Henry Bennahmias, also recently chatted with The Business Of Fashion about the project, noting his confidence in the collection.

“Travis could raise an army,” the Parisian fashion mogul explained, citing the size and intensity of the artist’s fanbase. “He’s got such a power. People follow him in a major way.” He continued, describing his certainty that the collection will do well. “People will go nuts when they know that AP and Travis have made merch together. It breaks pretty much every code. Is it going to be successful? We could have multiplied the quantity by at least 10 times and still been successful,” Bennahmias said. Beyonce And Jay-Z Attend Renaissance Film Premiere Together

Last year, Beyonce released her new album Renaissance. It spawned hit songs like “BREAK MY SOUL” and “CUFF IT” while also raking in praise from critics for its eclectic blend of influences. Earlier this year she took off on her massive Renaissance tour across North America and Europe. The tour made nightly news for the high-profile guests in attendance and various collaborators she had join her on stage.

Earlier this year after the tour wrapped up, she announced that a concert film recapping the shows would be released in December. It followed in the footsteps of Taylor Swift, who also turned the North American portion of her Eras Tour into a concert film that was released earlier this month. Now with the release of the Renaissance film coming later this week, the movie is being premiered at numerous locations around the world. Earlier this week the film had its North American premiere in Hollywood and the celebrities showed out. Lizzo, Halle Bailey, and Lori Harvey were all in attendance and there was even a Destiny’s Child reunion. Now the film is having its London premiere which is once again stacked with guests.

CyHi The Prynce Clarifies Dissing Joe Budden In New Music Video With Pusha T

However, he doesn’t think that the immediate reaction to this method is as big of a deal as the Internet is making it out to be. Moreover, the rapper recently released his six-minute-long music video for the single “Mr. Put That S**t On” featuring Pusha T. In the visual, he slaps a Joe Budden stand-in in the face and features a skit of The Average Joe Show, which might be a shot at the Slaughterhouse affiliate’s self-titled podcast. Still, with his latest Instagram post, the frequent Kanye West collaborator explained the idea behind this, and how it doesn’t have much to do with their established beef.

“In the Average Joe Show from the scene in “Mr. Put That Sh!t On”, the goal was to transform a controversial topic into an artistic masterpiece with humor, theatrics, and pure entertainment,” CyHi wrote on Instagram on Tuesday (November 28). In addition, the post features Joe Budden praising the track and some more discussion on it, although he didn’t react to the music video.
