Mozzy fans were overjoyed when the West Coast rapper completed his 10-month prison sentence in early May. As we reported last summer, he turned himself in on federal gun charges. Still, he didn’t let being behind bars stop him from dropping bars of his own. He collaborated with friends like Baby Money and Celly Ru and left us seriously impressed with his own Kollect Kall EP back in April. Mozzy has been busy celebrating since his spring homecoming. Unfortunately, that came to an end early on Sunday (July 2) morning, when he was reportedly arrested.
Footage of the 36-year-old being detained by police in the dead of night has been appearing online. “Maaan @MozzyThaMotive came out to our city Wichita, [Kansas] for a dope a** show,” one user wrote along with their video. “Went to [an] after party and then got arrested. SMH, free Mozzy yo, f**k 12.” According to ABC News, the nightclub where the recording artist was partying was actually the scene of a shooting that left seven people shot and two trampled.
The venue is located at 222 North Washington Street. As gunfire rang out, screaming was heard coming from inside at 12:58 AM. Lt. Aaron Moses, Executive Officer of the Wichita Police Department spoke with the outlet, confirming that one person remains in critical condition. Other victims (ranging in age from 21 to 34) were transported to local hospitals for treatment and are expected to be fine.
ABC notes that “one person has been detained for questioning at this time,” though Mozzy specifically wasn’t named. However, with the videos showing the Oak Park native in the same area at the same time being detained, it’s not hard to piece the puzzle together. We’ll be sure to share more information on the situation as it becomes available. After turning himself into police custody in 2022, rapper Mozzy has been released from federal prison after serving ten months. The artist served his sentence at USP Atwater in Atwater, California, and was initially sentenced to a year. The conviction was related to his January 2021 arrest for gun possession. While the rapper has been serving his sentence, he has continued to release new music, including the six-track Kollect Kall EP. With a long career spanning over a decade, the artist’s legal troubles have not hindered the success of his career. Here’s everything you need to know about CMG artist Mozzy.
Early Life & Music Beginnings
Mozzy, whose real name is Timothy Patterson, is a rapper from Sacramento, California. He grew up in Sacramento’s Oak Park neighborhood. In childhood, he was raised by his grandmother, a member of the Black Panther Party. Mozzy started his music career at 11 under Lil’ Tim and has since released numerous mixtapes and albums, including 1 Up Top Ahk and Gangland Landlord. Mozzy has collaborated with many well-known artists, including YG, Yo Gotti, and Kendrick Lamar. He has also been praised for his storytelling and ability to paint a vivid picture of life in the streets in his music.
Mixtapes & Albums
Known for his gritty street tales and unique flow, Mozzy’s mixtapes and albums have been praised by critics for their lyrical content and production quality. The rapper’s 2015 mixtape, Bladadah, is one of his most successful projects. This mixtape led to the rapper being recognized by Complex magazine for having the “best run of 2015.” Rolling Stone also recognized it as the 22nd-best rap album of 2015. Mozzy also released ten other mixtapes between 2011 and 2016. His 2016 mixtape Mandatory Check reached No. 7 on the Billboard Rap Albums chart.
So far, Mozzy has shared six studio albums, the latest being Survivor’s Guilt, released in July 2022. The album peaked at No. 40 on the US Billboard 200, and No. 23 on the Billboard Top R&B/Hip Hop Albums. Mozzy’s best-performing album was 2021’s Untreated Trauma. The album peaked at No. 19 on the US Billboard 200 and No. 10 on the Billboard Top R&B/ Hip Hop Albums chart. The rapper also released collaborative albums, like 2021’s Kommunity Service with YG. Mozzy has also released compilation albums with Blac Youngsta, Gunplay, and Stevie Joe. In February 2022, Mozzy signed a major-label contract with Yo- Gotti’s CMG. The deal came as a joint venture between CMG and Interscope Records.
Legal Troubles
Though the rapper is now a free man, his latest sentence is not the first he has faced during his career. Between 2005 and 2008, Mozzy was arrested three times by the Sacramento Police for various crimes, including illegal possession of a firearm and evading police. In 2014, he was reportedly arrested in Sacramento due to a long-term investigation by the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Department. The department was investigating Mozzy’s involvement in drug trafficking and other criminal activities. After the arrest, Mozzy faced multiple felony charges, including possessing a firearm by a felon. This resulted in the rapper being unable to leave California until 2017 due to being on probation.
In 2021, Mozzy was arrested for gun possession by a convicted felon following a traffic stop in Culver City, California. While driving, the rapper was pulled over for traffic violations. According to authorities, the smell of marijuana upon approaching the vehicle prompted them to search the rapper’s car. Upon searching his vehicle, the arresting officer allegedly found a Glock Model 26 Gen 4, 9mm caliber pistol. The officer also found 16 rounds of Speer 9mm Luger caliber ammunition and a personal amount of weed. Mozzy would be released after posting a $35,000 bond. In July 2022, the rapper would turn himself into police custody. Initially scheduled to be released on July 23, 2023, the rapper was released after serving ten months.
What’s Next For Mozzy
“Life comes at you fast. Sometimes shit gets real [and] you gotta take that deal,” said Mozzy in a statement to the press before beginning his sentence. “It’ll get slimy out here. Appreciate my loved ones. Chin up, chest out. Love you the most.”
Now that Mozzy is free again, he has much to look forward to in his career. With the sentence coming off the heels of Mozzy signing with Yo Gotti’s CMG, the artist is ready to drop more hits with his label mates. Fans still appreciate the 15-song album, Survivor’s Guilt, which featured guest appearances from Gotti. The album also featured appearances from 42 Dugg, Roddy Ricch, YG, and EST Gee. Mozzy recently released the follow to Survivor’s Guilt, titled Kollect Kall, earlier this year as well.
Mozzy, membe of Yo Gotti’s Collective Music Group, was once approaching mainstream notoriety after years of domination in California’s underground scene. However, after securing collaborations with Eminem, Saweetie, 2Chainz, YG, and more, the “Straight To The 4th” rapper’s growing buzz came to a screeching halt when he was sentenced to one year in prison for a federal gun charge.
Before turning himself in, Mozzy (real name Timothy Patterson) rushed to record as much music and behind-the-scenes content to hold fans over. One of his verses ended on the song “Been A While,” featured on DJ Drama’s latest album, I’m Really Like That.
After 1o months behind bars, AllHipHop reports that Mozzy was released from prison just a few days ago, on Thursday, May 4. Back in 2021, Mozzy was formally indicted. The following year, he pleaded guilty to a charge of possessing a firearm by a convicted felon. In addition to his sentence, Mozzy was hit with a $55,000 fine. He was initially expected to be released in July 2023, but apparently he was released early.
Mozzy keeps it moving, incarcerated or not. On Wednesday (April 4), the rapper dropped the first song on the tracklist of his latest EP. “Free All The Lifers” features Dave-O and Jay P Bangz as producers and sees the Sacramento-born rapper bring his usual intensity. He came out swinging, calling out would-be haters with lines like, “N*ggas on the internet begging to meet the reaper / I got all these screenshots of you begging me for a feature.” It’s a reminder that even when he’s in prison, the 35-year-old is not to be messed with.
Today, Mozzy dropped his appropriately titled new project, Kollect Kall. Though the effort is less than 15 minutes long, the “Real Ones” rapper manages to speak on a wide range of topics from personal relationships to industry woes and more. It is equal parts aggressive and emotional. Every track has its place on the EP, but the final cut, “Turn Your Back,” is a definite standout. The jazz-tinged instrumental swims with reverb-saturated saxophones and vocal samples. Mozzy raps about betrayals by people he thought he could trust. “If we was brothers like we thought, we coulda fixed that,” he says, “Instead of intervening and gettin’ between us, n*gga, sit back.”
Free Mozzy
The Oak Park native might get emotional on the EP, but he also gives plenty of warnings to those who would cross him. On “It’s Over,” he tells us that he’ll never be the one that hesitates to take a shot when he needs to. “I refuse to be the one to freeze wit the blammy, that’s on granny,” Mozzy lyricizes. “They prayin’ the judge do a n*gga scandalous, they can’t stand me.”
Less than a year ago, the rapper released his sixth solo studio album, Survivor’s Guilt. Unfortunately, Mozzy began his prison sentence directly after the project dropped. He was put away on gun charges in connection with a 2021 traffic stop. At the time, his car was searched, and police officers discovered a Glock 26 and 9 rounds of ammunition. Though the recording artist’s defense team argued that it was necessary for protection and requested a probation sentence, the rapper was sentenced to federal prison.
Given Mozzy’s track record of releasing several albums every year, it’s safe to say we likely won’t have to wait long to hear more from the Sacramento native. What do you think of Kollect Kall? Sound off in the comments, and check back later for more hip-hop news.
People may admire the canvasses, but they can never know the full story behind each brush stroke if it isn’t told. Though Collective Music Group may appear successful on the surface, there is pain and struggle behind their journeys that makes where they are now even more laudable. Their latest video for “Gangsta Art,” featuring Yo Gotti, Moneybagg Yo, 42 Dugg, EST Gee, Blac Youngsta and Lehla Samia, tells the story behind their work
Samia handles the hook while Mozzy, Moneybagg, Gee, Dugg, Youngsta and Gotti all tell their own stories through verses accompanied by elaborate scenes. Mozzy spits from bedside, EST Gee sits on a bench, Moneybagg Yo shows blood dripping from his shoulders, Blac Youngsta is chained up, and Yo Gotti sits in front of an oven. The only person missing from the video is the incarcerated 42 Dugg, but his energy is still felt.
“Gangsta Art” is both the opener and title track from CMG’s latest label compilation album. Gangsta Art also features Kodak Black, Coi Leray, Big30, and more across its 27 records. If CMG somehow wasn’t on radars before, they are making sure to change that with efforts like this.
Check out CMG’s “Gangsta Art” video above.
42 Dugg is a Warner Music artist. Uproxx is an independent subsidiary of Warner Music Group.
Mozzy has been on quite a run over the last few years, both individually and as part of Yo Gotti’s CMG imprint. Unfortunately, the Sacramento rapper’s momentum will be coming to a halt as he turned himself in yesterday (July 28) and will serve a one-year sentence in prison for a federal gun charge.
The “Famous” artist was originally arrested during a traffic stop back in January 2021. The police then caught the scent of marijuana and went on to search the car, discovering a Glock 26, 16 rounds of 9mm ammunition, and marijuana. Mozzy was then taken in before posting his $35,000 bail.
The case was rejected by the District Attorney’s office and passed on to a local US Attorney. Mozzy was picked up by US Marshals in Las Vegas at an unrelated court appearance, upon which he and his wife split a $1 million appearance bond and he went free from his federal charge. Mozzy pled guilty this past January and aimed for just probation, which was denied. Prosecutors sought a 10-month sentence and drug counseling after he tested positive for marijuana while on pretrial release.
It is clearly an unfortunate series of events for Mozzy and he will now have to sit for a year.
