No. 3 Kansas Fall To Unranked Team Day After No. 1 Purdue & No. 2 Houston

No. 3 Kansas fell 65-60 to unranked UCF on Wednesday, meaning that for the first time in 20 years, the top three ranked men’s teams in the nation all lost to unranked teams in a two-day span. Down 16 at half-time, the team rallied to beat their first ranked opponent since 2020 and their highest-ranked opponent in team history. UCF beat No. 4 UConn in 2012 to set the team’s previous benchmark.

“We kept believing, and our guys kept fighting. We got off to a really good start in the game. They have a championship pedigree. A championship program. Great coach. And I feel like guys just kept fighting. We knew we couldn’t get it all back in one possession. So what we wanted to do was chip away, chip away. And I thought we did that by halftime, and we carried that momentum into the second half,” head coach Johnny Dawkins said after the game.

Kansas Join Purdue And Houston In Infamous History

However, as mentioned, Kansas is just the latest ranked team to fall to unranked opposition. On Tuesday, the top two teams in college basketball fell to unranked opponents. It was the first time since February 2016 that the top two teams lost on the same day. No. 1 Purdue, riding a seven-game winning streak, was stunned by a high-flying Nebraska team that has started the season 13-3. It was Nebraska’s first win over a No. 1-ranked team since 1982. Furthermore, it’s the fourth time in the past two seasons that Purdue has fallen to an unranked team. Earlier this season, the Boilermakers were shocked by Northwestern.

Meanwhile, No. 2 Houston entered the day as the last undefeated team in men’s college basketball. However, they seemed unable to mount a response to Iowa State, who raced out to a 14-0 lead in the opening minutes of the game. “It was important that we came out and set the tone with the game. We talked about we need to throw the first punch, we need to be the aggressor, we need to be the team that sets the tone,” Iowa State head coach T.J. Otzelberger said after the game. Iowa improved to 12-3 on the season with the win.

Marquette Head Coach Tries To Fight Kansas Players During Upset Win: Watch

Marquette head coach Shaka Smart had to be restrained by his own players as he tried to throw down with members of Kansas’ roster. Late in the first half of the game at the AllState Maui Invitational, Kevin McCullar Jr. drilled a corner three for the #1 Jayhawks. Then , he appeared to say something to the Marquette bench as he moved back down the sideline. Moments later, the benches cleared as Smart appeared to try and chase after McCullar. However, the third-year head coach was held back by his players, and nothing more than an exchange of words occurred. Regardless of the lack of violence, a team technical was called on the #4 Golden Eagles.

The incident aside, the game was all positives for Marquette. With school legend Dwyane Wade sitting courtside, the Golden Eagles knocked off Kansas 73-59. Despite the game getting the deserved hype of a top-four matchup, Marquette led for all but 22 seconds of the game. With #2 Purdue also advancing in the Feast Week tournament, Marquette will become the 10th team in NCAA history to play the top-two ranked teams on consecutive days and the first since 1972. However, the last time a team won both such games was in 1963.

Smart Reveals History With McCullar Jr.

After the game, Smart praised his players for not letting the incident derail their focus. “At the end of the day, it had very little to do with the game. Our guys did a really good job of just basically ignoring what happened and just continuing to play, and that shows their maturity and their poise,” Smart said. However, he also revealed that he actually had history with McCullar Jr, dating back to his coaching tenure at Texas. At the time, McCullar Jr. was playing for Texas Tech.

“He’s always kind of enjoyed having dialogue with me. He probably oes that with all coaches but that probably started the dustup. Then their bench got involved and our bench got involved,” Smart noted. McCullar played three years at Texas Tech before transferring to the Jayhawks in 2022. He is expected to leave for the NBA draft at the end of the season. Smart coached Texas between 2015 and 2021, winning the NIT but never progressing past the first round of the NCAA tournament. Last season, he led the Golden Eagles to a sweep of the Big East but fell in the second round of March Madness.

Mozzy Released From Prison After Short Stint For Club Shooting On No Charges

Fans recently celebrated the release of Mozzy from jail, who served a ten-month prison sentence on federal gun charges. While that news disappointed many of the Sacramento rapper’s listeners, he still kept his career going with plenty of releases in that timeframe. However, the joy of his freedom didn’t last long as authorities detained him following a shooting at a Kansas nightclub he performed at. Moreover, very little information emerged as to the reasoning or implications of this arrest from reports on the matter. “Maaan @MozzyThaMotive came out to our city Wichita, [Kansas] for a dope a** show,” a user captioned a video of the arrest. “Went to [an] after party and then got arrested. SMH, free Mozzy yo, f**k 12.”

Now, it seems like that issue was resolved, as officials released Mozzy following his brief detainment. In addition, reports indicate that authorities pressed no charges against the MC for what went down in Kansas. According to ABC News, the nightclub he had a show in suffered a shooting that left seven shot and two trampled. Apparently police detained him for questioning as a suspect of the shooting, but it turns out that accusation was short-lived.

Mozzy Reportedly Released

Regardless, the CMG signee is probably looking forward to working on his career moves and expressing himself through music once more. After all, his time behind bars didn’t stop him from keeping fans fed, even if it was through a shorter project than many probably wanted. Furthermore, his Kollect Kall EP featured YFN Lucci, E MOZZY, Baby Money, and Celly Ru across six new tracks. Hopefully his release means that authorities cleared him of legal trouble over the tragic shooting, and that they’re working hard to find the true culprit.

Meanwhile, given the 36-year-old’s resilience, he definitely has the spirit to bounce back hard following his troubles. “Life comes at you fast. Sometimes s**t gets real [and] you gotta take that deal,” he stated to the press upon turning himself in for his gun case. “It’ll get slimy out here. Appreciate my loved ones. Chin up, chest out. Love you the most.” For more news and the latest updates on Mozzy, check back in with HNHH.

Mozzy Reportedly Arrested In Wichita Less Than Two Months After Prison Release

Mozzy fans were overjoyed when the West Coast rapper completed his 10-month prison sentence in early May. As we reported last summer, he turned himself in on federal gun charges. Still, he didn’t let being behind bars stop him from dropping bars of his own. He collaborated with friends like Baby Money and Celly Ru and left us seriously impressed with his own Kollect Kall EP back in April. Mozzy has been busy celebrating since his spring homecoming. Unfortunately, that came to an end early on Sunday (July 2) morning, when he was reportedly arrested.

Footage of the 36-year-old being detained by police in the dead of night has been appearing online. “Maaan @MozzyThaMotive came out to our city Wichita, [Kansas] for a dope a** show,” one user wrote along with their video. “Went to [an] after party and then got arrested. SMH, free Mozzy yo, f**k 12.” According to ABC News, the nightclub where the recording artist was partying was actually the scene of a shooting that left seven people shot and two trampled.

Kansas Nightclub Shooting Sees Mozzy’s Arrest

The venue is located at 222 North Washington Street. As gunfire rang out, screaming was heard coming from inside at 12:58 AM. Lt. Aaron Moses, Executive Officer of the Wichita Police Department spoke with the outlet, confirming that one person remains in critical condition. Other victims (ranging in age from 21 to 34) were transported to local hospitals for treatment and are expected to be fine.

ABC notes that “one person has been detained for questioning at this time,” though Mozzy specifically wasn’t named. However, with the videos showing the Oak Park native in the same area at the same time being detained, it’s not hard to piece the puzzle together. We’ll be sure to share more information on the situation as it becomes available. If you’re interested in learning more about Mozzy’s impressive rap career while we await updates on his arrest, read our recent feature at the link below.
