Today In Hip Hop History: Cam’Ron’s ‘Confessions Of Fire’ LP Turns 25 Years Old!

Wearing goggles, gloves, and overalls, Cam’ron stood with a sledgehammer in hand, at a foundry as he was ready to make his mark on Hip Hop. On this day 25 years ago he released his debut album Confessions of Fire. 

Many had come to know him as a member of Harlem’s Children of the Corn, a group that also included Big L, Ma$e, and Cam’s cousin, Bloodshed. Following the untimely death of Bloodshed, the group disbanded and Cam’ron went solo.

Highlighted by leadoff singles “357,” “Horse & Carriage” featuring Ma$e and “Feels Good” which featured Usher, the album also saw appearances from N.O.R.E., Jermaine Dupri, and Charlie Baltimore to name a few.On this album, Cam’s mix of hardcore street appeal and pop-infused ballads would prove to be effective as the album peaked at No. 6 on the Billboard 200 chart and No.2 on the Top R&B/Hip-Hop chart. Propelled by the Trackmasters-produced “Horse & Carriage” which reached No. 41 on the Billboard Hot 100, the album would sell over 500,000 copies and achieve gold certification.

These days we have come to love him as the head of Dipset and one of the biggest style influences in the industry. However, Confessions of  Fire laid the foundation for the star Cam became.

Cam’ron will step from behind the sports desk and head back to the studio. Appearing on Instagram, Cam drops off some new bars, revealing a mixtape will arrive on July 28.

“Just warming up. @itiswhatitis_talk mixtape July 28…,” Cam penned. “#IIWII the new DEATHROW[.] WELCOME TO THE ROW N-GGA[.] We just got to summer leauge too!! Vegas we here!!! And by da way the old MURDA BACK!!!! @rsvpmase.”

Cam’Ron Coins Hilarious New Phrase After Zion Williamson Drama

It’s been rough for Zion Williamson the past few weeks. It all began with Williamson posting images from the gender reveal party he was throwing alongside his girlfriend Ahkeema. This led OnlyFans creator Moriah Mills to accuse Williamson of infidelity on Twitter. Mills leaked various messages from Williamson, while also claiming they had hooked up recently. Mills went as far to implement she may also be pregnant, saying that her period was later. Furthermore, Mills claimed that the Pelicans forward was paying for her to move to New Orleans. More recently, microblading artist and influencer Yami Taylor has also claimed that she was very recently in a sexual relationship with Williamson, going as far as to call him a “nasty ass sex ad*ict” in her Instagram call out.

The internet has had a lot of fun roasting the injury-plagued forward. Stephen A. Smith delivered a particularly masterful response to the whole situation. The drama led to a massive spike in Pornhub traffic for Mills while Williamson got further roasted for a PR stunt at a school. Beyond the drama, Williamson is now potentially being floated as a trade piece as the Pelicans look to move up in the draft.

Cam’Ron and Mase gave their takes on the latest episode of It Is What It Is. “[Moriah Mills] got mad, talking ’bout, ‘Yo, you was at my house the other day and you spit in my mouth,’” Cam began. “Yo, she said that. She said: ‘How you gon’ be announcing a pregnancy and you was at my house the other day and you spit in my mouth?’ All the n-ggas I was with was like, ‘Yeah!’ Like yo, what you thought you was gon’ hurt him by saying that? He getting cr*zy nasty wit you.” Ma$e then added: “If the new term is the Zion, I’ll Zion you. 100 percent. Spit right in ya face and you gon’ love it.”

It’s not the only wild take in response to Williamson’s recent antics. former NBA star Gilbert Arenas came to Williamson’s defense with a passionate, if eccentric, take on the situation. “Ja Morant in the strip club paying $50,000. Stephen A. Smith Joins Cam’ron On “It Is What It Is”

Stephen A. Smith is certainly one of the biggest names in sports talk television. Overall, he is the man who has helped ESPN get through some pretty rough times. Although not everyone is a fan of his, he has certainly shown just how valuable he is to that company. Moreover, if it were not for him, there would be no one watching First Take. Not to mention, he and Skip Bayless helped pioneer the debate show format. For better or for worse, he is absolutely a legend of the game.

Subsequently, Stephen A. has inspired other shows like First Take. For instance, Cam’ron and Ma$e have their very own show called It Is What It Is. The show has proven to be fantastic. They make some hilarious jokes, and for the most part, the commentary is always unique. Compared to sports journalists, they have a more fan-based perspective that is typically irreverent and less manufactured. That said, it appears as though they have attracted the attention of ESPN’s finest.

In the Instagram post above, from the It Is What It Is page, Stephen A. could be seen on set with Cam’ron. If it is a debate, we could be seeing Smith in a whole new light. Whether or not ESPN is going to be fond of that, still remains to be seen.

Cam’Ron Defends Not Passing To Ma$e in 1992 Basketball Game

Cam’Ron and Ma$e are old friends. In fact, their friendship can be traced all the way back to high school. During those formative years, the two played varsity basketball at Manhattan Center High School. However, in one 1992 game, Cam’Ron declined to pass with 4.1 seconds left, instead unsuccessfully attempting the game-winning shot himself.

Why are we talking about this? Because apparently, Ma$e is still a little salty about this moment. Ma$e believes that Cam’Ron should have passed. Additionally, footage of the two of them discussing whether Cam’Ron should have dished out the assist was posted to the It Is What It Is Instagram page, sparking a debate amongst the fans as well.

Cam’Ron Defends Shot-Taking Decision

Cam’Ron posted a clip of him and his It Is What It Is co-host debating whether Cam’Ron should have passed during a 1992 Public School Athletics League basketball game. Cam’Ron’s post included the caption, “Everyone said I shoulda passed to murder @rsvpmase on the @itiswhatitis_talk page, ok fine let me state my case. I make that shot our careers woulda been over at this point in life Lol. Now Look we getting more money then ever. 🤷🏾‍♂️ and it was only 4.1 seconds when I got the rebound. What y’all think? 🤦🏾‍♂️.”

Furthermore, Cam’Ron went in to play-by-play mode to explain why he didn’t pass. “Behind the back, nah I ain’t goin’ that way. Lose it, get it back, and 1. Ah! Tough! I come around right here. Dish. ‘Bout my eighth assist of the game. Mid-range game, yeah. So right here, it’s Four point two seconds left. I don’t know I’m getting the rebound. Four seconds left. Corey Wright misses, it bounces off front rim. I get it, look, four, three, two, one, I don’t see nobody to pass. Murda mad at me. He throw a tantrum. I was hot. Now look, I make that shot, that means you go to college, I go to college, we go to the league overseas, whatever. Our career would have been over! Fat Joe, Cam’ron, Ma$e, And Others To Perform At First Harlem Festival Of Culture

The 2023 Harlem Festival of Culture, or HFC, has added some hip-hop superstars to its performance roster. The upcoming event will be the first ever iteration of the festival. It will take place from July 28 to 30 at New York’s Randall’s Island Park. The HFC aims to celebrate the richness of black music and culture. Because of this, the event draws inspiration from the historic Harlem Cultural Festival of 1969. That was documented in the award-winning film Summer of Soul, which was directed by none other than Ahmir “Questlove” Thompson.

Yvonne McNai is the co-founder and technical & talent producer of HFC. She expressed her excitement for the festival upon its announcement. Additionally, McNai emphasized its significance in showcasing the diversity and brilliance of black music and culture. Michael L. Bivins from Bell Biv DeVoe served as the festival’s creative director. He highlighted the special connection between the event and the Harlem community. Furthermore, Bivins pointed out his pride in participating and supporting local businesses.

The HFC Has An Impressive Roster

As seen in the graphic above, the HFC will feature performances by many prominent artists. These include Fat Joe, Cam’ron, Ma$e, Teyana Taylor, Muni Long, and Wyclef Jean. Additionally, MC Lyte, a native New Yorker, has been selected as the host of the event, and she expressed how special it was to be part of the inaugural Harlem Festival of Culture. “As a native New Yorker, I’m honored to host the very first Harlem Festival of Culture. [HFC] has planned something special that I think everyone – whether they’re from around the corner, across the country or around the world – will enjoy,” Lyte said.

Co-founder Yvonne McNai went on to underscore the reason for the festival. “Ultimately, HFC is our love letter to Harlem,” she said. “…we’re excited to grow it into a landmark cultural experience that encapsulates all the things that make Uptown the nexus of innovation, cultural expression and a place of true community-building.” Tickets for the Harlem Festival of Culture are now available for purchase on the festival’s official website. There are arguments to be made for every one of these players and more. In short, the NBA has no shortage of great players at the position.

However, it is a hotly debated topic. And there are some choices that people would say were the “wrong” choice. Additionally, in that vein, Cam’Ron and Ma$e are catching some flak for their choice.

Fans Question Cam’s Choice For Best PG

Cam’Ron and Ma$e, hosts of It Is What It Is, were in Phoenix this past weekend for Game 4 between the Suns and Nuggets. While there, they caught up with Hall of Famer Isiah Thomas. Filming a video together, Cam’Ron boldly announced, “We here with the best point guard ever. Ever, what the fuck is you talking about? Listen, man, ever n-gga. It Is What It Is.” Furthermore, Thomas would later post a photo with Ma$e with the caption “Let it be known #badboys”. This referred to his time on the “Bad Boys” Pistons of the 1980s and Ma$e’s links to Death Row Records. The hometown Suns won Game 4 129-124. The game was highlighted by Nikola Jokic crashing into Suns owner Mat Ishbia. The Nuggets star was later fined for this contact.

However, fans don’t appear to share their opinion. “C’mon man… Even I know Magic Johnson was the best PG EVER and he was before my generation,” wrote one commenter. “Lying to that man on camera is crazy!” said another. Thomas, a career Piston between 1983 and 1994, was a two-time champion as well as the 1990 Finals MVP. Bleacher Report ranked him as #6 on their list of the 50 greatest point guards of all time. Cam’ron And Mase Went In On Jordan Poole Over A Rumor He Spent Over $500K On A Date With Ice Spice, Calling Him A ‘Munch’ And More

Whoever had the idea to give Cam’ron and Mase a sports talk show deserves a massive raise, but they also have a problem on their hands. On one hand, the show works because of the hosts’ tendencies to spiral into chaotic side discussions that make use of their charismatic, Harlem-bred personalities. On the other, sometimes they need to be reined in to keep them from veering into problematic territory — but doing so would stifle their capacity for creating viral moments like this one.

Make no mistake; this is very borderline problematic. In the latest episode of It Is What It Is, Cam basically blames Jordan Poole’s poor performance in Game 2 of the NBA Playoffs on a woman, Ice Spice — specifically, on Jordan Poole supposedly spending half a million dollars taking Ice Spice out (how?!???). But then, Mase calls Jordan Poole a “Munch” (from Ice’s breakout single and also the unofficial nickname for her loyal fans) and the whole thing becomes very funny.

“You’re a Munch, and you’re playing like a f*ckin’ Munch!” Cam declares. “This is not you from last year, bro. Go back to Milwaukee and figure it the f*ck out.” Cam explains why he’s so mad at Poole; after having the streaky shooter’s back for years, he feels let down by Poole’s questionable decision-making throughout the playoffs. However, there’s no evidence that Poole even knows Isis (Ice Spice’s real name), and the rumors come from notoriously unreliable gossip sites like Media Takeout.

Ma$e knows what it is like to be on top of the world. Currently, on Spotify, the rap legend has 2 million people per month listening to his music. With his top song ‘Feel so Good’ earning over 127 million plays. Now the rap icon is moving on to discussing highly debatable sports takes. In a recent Instagram Live with Cam’ron, the pair discussed the talents of LeBron James and Steph Curry. While both respect the game of both players, Ma$e believes that Curry is the better player.

The Warriors sharpshooter has continued to climb up the greatest players of all time list. Recently, after the Warriors opening round victory over the Kings, many were making the case for Curry to be a top 10 player of all time. However, being compared to being on the same level as James hasn’t been much of a conversation. However, it makes sense that this discussion would finally come up. One of the biggest reasons that Curry and James haven’t been a comparable duo is their style of play. James is 6’9 and can play every position on the floor. James has been known more as a facilitator who can take over a game at any time. However, Curry is more known as a lethal shooter. Curry changed the entire landscape of the NBA with his style of play. A generational talent that is somehow spoken of in an underrated light because of his talents changing the game.

The debate will now be etched in the front of everyone’s brain. Especially now that the two are playing each other in the second round of the NBA Playoffs. The meeting between James and the Warriors will be another reminder of one of the greatest rivalries in league history.
