Zion Williamson’s Latest Injury Update Is Bad News For The Pelicans

Zion Williamson left Tuesday night’s game against Lebron James and the Los Angeles Lakers late in the fourth quarter. Williamson left the game after giving one of his best-ever performances, scoring 40 points and grabbing 11 rebounds. Zion was a force all game and rallied the Pelican’s comeback. Despite falling short, the Pelicans can still earn a playoff berth. They are set to play the Sacramento Kings on Friday, but they may be without their star player.

It was initially reported that Zion experienced some soreness in his left leg. Earlier today, it was confirmed that the issue was his left hamstring, a recurring problem for the highflyer. His reaction when being taken out of the game last night said it all. Visibly frustrated with yet another injury, Zion stormed off into the locker room. His injury status has been updated, and it doesn’t look good for Zion and the Pels.

Zion will miss the Pelican’s play in a game against the Kings and will be evaluated in the coming weeks. It is a major blow to the Pelican, who, despite losing to the Lakers, had more than a good chance of making the NBA playoffs. Without Zion, the likes of Brandon Ingram and CJ McCollum will have to step up for the Pels. They can’t afford to have games as bad as they did against the Lakers if they want to beat the Kings. Zion had an incredible game and physically bullied LeBron and the Lakers for much of the game. Even if the Pelicans win, there’s no timetable for Ion’s return. Therefore, it’s possible he wouldn’t be available for the first round anyway.

It’s another setback for Zion, who has had numerous injuries since being drafted in 2019. When he is on the court, he is electric. Just look at his game against the Lakers. It felt like he was finally turning a corner and was going to be able to perform in the playoffs for the first time in his career. Last night, Lebron James and the Los Angeles Lakers went up against Zion Williamson, the New Orleans Pelicans. The Lakers came out on top, beating the Pelicans 110-106, securing the 7th seed in the Western Conference. The Lakers will face the defending champion Denver Nuggets in the first round. Lebron and the Lakers closed out the game in the end mainly due to some LeBron heroics. Zion Williamson did everything he could against the Lakers, scoring 40 points and bringing the Pelicans back from double digits. Zion’s performance was a physical exhibition as he bullied his way to the basket throughout the entire game.

When playing physically strong players like Zion, you usually have to make a couple of business decisions. Do you get in his way and have his giant frame crash into you? Or do you stand your ground and take charge and deal with the pain later? LeBron went viral last night after opting to take a charge from Williamson, for which he should absolutely get a pat on the back.

Shaq Has One Major Issue With Zion Williamson’s Recent Dunk Contest Comments

Shaq has expressed his disappointment in Zion Williamson’s recent comments about participating in the dunk contest if he is named an All-Star. For the Hall of Famer, Williamson didn’t express enough desire to be named an All-Star. “You have to see it, Zion. When I make the All-Star team, yes. All that if talk, it’s just telling me that you’re not fully confident in yourself. Which is ok, he’s still a young player. But at some point, you have to say — like I said in Vegas — ‘this is my league’,” Shaq said.

Williamson is a two-time All-Star, appearing at the midseason event in 2021 and 2023. Williamson is averaging 22/5.5/5.2 this season but was not named an All-Star in a crowded field across both conferences. The Pelicans are 37-25 and fifth in the Western Conference.

However, as Shaq himself alluded to, it’s not the first time that he has laid into the 2019 first-overall pick. Shaq and Charles Barkley had no time for Williamson’s poor showing against the Lakers in the semifinals of the In-Season Tournament last December. “Does not run hard — it’s not a diss, this is gonna be a lesson from one great big man to another guy that can be a great. Does not run hard. I had the same problem my first, second year — I thought I was running hard. Charles talks about this all the time, my talent’s gonna get me 20. When I start going to 20, 30, and 40, it’s because I started doing certain things,” Shaq said.

However, the Hall of Fame big man wasn’t finished “He doesn’t create easy points for himself. I saw a couple times when he had a couple times at the basket, he don’t seal, right? The New Orleans Pelicans have taken shots at Stephen A. Smith after the ESPN personality went on yet another rant about team star Zion Williamson. The team’s official X account posted a graphic showing Smith’s dismal college stats of 1.5 points and 1 assist a game.

Appearing on Get Up! earlier today, Smith had once again gone after Williamson’s weight. “Zion Williamson, it’s not about his game. It’s about how many burgers he’s eating. Whether or not he is going to be in shape or keep eating McDonald’s and have chefs clamoring for him to come to their restaurants. That’s what he has to prove, that the chefs don’t love him any longer. That he’s committed to playing basketball and being in shape,” Smith said as the Pelicans prepare to face the Heat later today. Williamson, who is listed as a game-time decision due to a foot injury, is averaging 22.5/5.4/4.9 this season. He is shooting a league 12th-best 58.5% from the field.
