LeBron James Reveals Why He Never Did The Dunk Contest

LeBron James has accomplished a lot throughout his career in the NBA. Overall, he is someone who really cannot be toppled. At the end of the day, he is one of the GOATs and should be top three on every single’s fan’s list. However, there are still a few things that LeBron was never able to accomplish. One of those things was winning an NBA Dunk Contest. Of course, he never won a dunk contest because he never actually participated in it. This has always come as a great disappoint to the fans.

As many of you should all know, LeBron is incredible at dunking the basketball. Consequently, one would assume that he could put on a show in this competition. However, he never did and it led to other superstars passing up the opportunity. While speaking to Brandon “Scoop B” Robinson of Bally Sports, LeBron James explained why he hasn’t ever been part of the dunk contest. Ultimately, it boils down to him never seeing it as that essential.

LeBron James Gives His Reasons

“I don’t think it was something I wanted to accomplish in my career; it’s not a goal of mine and it never was coming into the NBA to be a part of the Dunk Contest, you know?” LeBron James said. “Making the NBA All-Star Team was, being the league MVP, winning Defensive Player of the Year, winning NBA Championships…? THOSE were some goals of mine. The NBA Dunk Contest was NEVER a goal of mine so, it wasn’t something that I had too much passion for.” At the end of the day, LeBron’s answer makes sense, although some fans will still be disappointed by it.

At this point in his career, LeBron James can do as he pleases. Whether or not he would ever do the dunk contest in his final season, remains to be seen. Hopefully, we do get to see it. Mac McClung Stuns NBA Fans With Dunk Contest Victory

If you don’t know the name Mac McClung, it is hard to really blame you. McClung is one of those players who really made a name for himself thanks to highlight tapes on social media. Throughout his time in high school and college, he was a dunking machine. Overall, he is just 6’2″ which makes his bounce truly impressive. However, aside from his amazing dunking ability, he has yet to really make much of an impact in the NBA. He originally signed with the Lakers only to be relegated to the G-League. Subsequently, this past week, he signed a two-way deal with the Philadelphia 76ers.

Additionally, McClung opted to put his name into the ring for the dunk contest. As we all know, the NBA Dunk Contest isn’t what it used to be as the star power isn’t there. This year, many fans were stunned by the lack of name recognition, and the presence of a G-League player made it that much less appealing for some people. However, Mac McClung went into the competition with the mindset that he would try and win an NBA role. In the end, he certainly did not disappoint.

Mac McClung Takes It All

In the video clip above, McClung was able to secure the Dunk Contest title with a 540-degree dunk. This is a move that certainly impressed all of the judges and those in the arena. Moreover, McClung was swarmed by fans, players, and celebrities upon making this dunk. It was a truly special moment for the young man, and we’re sure he was pumped by the reactions. In the eyes of many, he helped save the dunk contest.

As for NBA Twitter, they were also pumped about all of this. “Man was a viral HOH high school dunk phenom, still working his way to the League, but lemme go get that dunk contest trophy right quick and bring it back to life!!!” Steph Curry said. McClung also received immense praise from Magic Johnson, who said “Mac McClung has personally saved the slam dunk contest with his performance tonight.” Needless to say, the G-League star came through with a heroic effort that may just earn him some playing time in the NBA.

Kevin Durant Explains What The Dunk Contest Needs

Kevin Durant is one of the best players in the entire NBA. At this point, every single person knows what he is capable of. He has delivered some incredible performances over the years, and he is a two-time champion. Overall, he could be considered a top 10 player of all time.

This season, Durant has experienced some injury issues and is currently out. However, he is expected to come back soon, just in time for the postseason. If the Nets can make a deep run, KD would certainly be on track to cement his legacy as one of the game’s top tier players.

Kevin Durant x Dunk Contest

Recently, Durant was on his podcast The ETCs where he spoke about the dunk contest. This year, the talent pool is slim as Mac McClung, Shaedon Sharpe, and Kenyon Martin Jr. are some of the people participating. As Durant explained, this is not going to get people to tune in.

“I think the stars need to come back,” Durant explained. “… It felt like it was stars every year when I was a kid.” This is certainly a true statement given the fact that Kobe Bryant and Michael Jordan have both participated in the dunk contest. Moreover, KD wants to see Zion Williamson and Ja Morant participate.

Until the big stars begin to participate again, the dunk contest will continue to feel less special. Hopefully, that begins to change, sooner rather than later.

Let us know what you think of what Durant had to say, in the comments below. Additionally, keep it locked to HNHH for more news from the sports world.
