Lil Durk is gearing up to release Almost Healed. The album’s spoken-word opener, “Therapy Session” featuring Alicia Keys, establishes from jump that the title isn’t empty. The Chicago rapper is inviting fans into the depths of his ongoing healing process.

Lil Durk released the video for “Therapy Session/Pelle Coat” on Thursday, May 25 — combining the album’s first and second tracks visually. The Steve Cannon-directed cinematic experience begins with Keys’ omnipresence. She and Durk aren’t physically in the same space, but he’s listening intently to her as she acts as his therapist.

Keys asks Lil Durk about his state of mind when he “heard the news about your friend, Von, passing away on November 6, 2020, and then the loss of your brother on June 6, 2021.” She validates how devastated Lil Durk must have felt before encouraging him “to feel completely safe in this room” and “express your vulnerabilities.”

“Today is May 26,” Keys says. “Remember that you don’t have to go through this alone. I’m here to listen. You have the voice in this room. I wanna hear from Durk Banks.”

Abruptly, we see Lil Durk startled in his car at night. Was that scene all a dream? A repetitive rumination cycle in his mind as a byproduct of buried trauma? A tear falls from his eye as the video transitions into “Pelle Coat,” and the rest of the video follows Lill Durk retracing the past.

Lil Durk Details His Mourning Process

Lil Durk may be an incredibly successful and praised MC, but that status came after years of hardship, struggle, and grief. Moreover, he recently sat down to reflect on that process in an interview with DJ Akademiks on his Off The Record podcast. Of course, that conversation broached a lot of topics, including Gunna’s plea deal, Kanye West producing his next album Almost Healed before he scrapped the idea, and much more. However, this part of their talk ended up resonating with many who either struggle with grief themselves or understand the dark subject matter he conveys in his music. Regardless, the Chicago rapper detailed his mourning process and how he doesn’t want to burden others with it.

Lil Durk’s New Album ‘Almost Healed’: Here’s Everything We Know So Far

Lil Durk has been generous lately. The Chicago rapper’s Neighborhood Heroes HBCU College & Career Readiness Cohort Program donated $100,000 scholarships to two Howard University students, and Lil Durk added another $250,000 to Howard’s GRACE Grant program for financial aid.

He also met with Chicago mayor Brandon Johnson to discuss his foundation and how they could work together to help the city’s youth. Some people claimed Lil Durk only met with Johnson as album promotion, but he firmly denied that. “Stop saying my name on all negativity I’m smarter then [sic] that post what we doing for these kids [trophy emoji, globe emoji] – the voice,” he tweeted on May 8.

An album is coming from Lil Durk this week, though. Almost Healed will arrive over a year after March 2022’s 7220, which debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200, and almost exactly two years after his joint album with Lil Baby, The Voice Of The Heroes.

The lead single, “All My Life” featuring J. Cole, dropped on May 12 alongside a video directed by Steve Cannon.

The album’s opener, “Therapy Session” featuring Alicia Keys and “Pelle Coat” have been released as well, with the six-minute “Therapy Session/Pelle Coat” video (another Cannon-directed product) arriving on the eve of Almost Healed. “Therapy Session” solely features Keys speaking to Lil Durk, asking him about past traumas and encouraging him to express his “vulnerabilities and emotions.”

“Today is May 26,” she says, her voice echoing to Lil Durk as he sits alone in a dark room. “Remember that you don’t have to go through this alone. I’m here to listen. You have the voice in this room. I wanna hear from Durk Banks.” The video then cuts to “Pelle Coat.”

Tour

The release of Lil Durk‘s eighth studio album Almost Healed is just days away and the Chicago rapper has at last revealed the album’s tracklist. In addition to the previously released J. Cole-featuring single “All My Life,” Almost Healed contains 20 more tracks with features from 21 Savage, Alicia Keys, Future, Kodak Black, and reunions with country star Morgan Wallen and late fellow Chicagoan Juice WRLD. Some of the notable producers featured on the album include ATL Jacob, Metro Boomin, Southside, Wheezy, and Zaytoven.

In the lead-up to the album’s release, Durk has been focusing on committing positive acts to benefit his community. After declaring that he’d no longer drop foes’ names in his music after the death of his artist King Von, Durk has donated $350,000 to education and met with the new mayor of Chicago to discuss “saving kids’ lives.” However, lest anyone think he’d completely turned over a new leaf, he recently made comments calling Gunna a “rat” for allegedly “telling” on Young Thug. “All My Life” by J. Cole and Lil Durk has been nothing short of a success, whether as the first single to the latter’s upcoming album Almost Healed (whose tracklist and features just dropped) or as just a big moment in the hip-hop field. Moreover, the track officially debuted at No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100, marking new commercial highs for the two. Not only is it the Chicago MC’s highest-ever debut as a lead artist, but it’s also the North Carolina lyricist’s highest-charting feature. Even if it hadn’t charted at all, it would still remain a great song with some highly praised verses. With “All My Life” with the Dreamville boss as precedent, plus the big names and close collaborators on this list, this seems like it could be fireworks.
