Kali Uchis & Jhene Aiko Update Our “R&B Season” Playlist With Grace: Stream

Our R&B Season playlist is back with another update, rounding up some of the best new music that releases this week. Moreover, when it comes to more soulful releases, there was one big album that we can’t go any longer without mentioning: Kali Uchis’ new album ORQUÍDEAS. Two specific tracks that go great together off this gorgeous project actually dropped as a joint music video the day before the record dropped: “Tu Corazón Es Mío / Diosa.” What’s more is that the Colombian-Virginian artist used this visual to officially announce that she and Don Toliver are expecting a child together. Congratulations to the happy couple!

Elsewhere on our R&B Season update, we also shouted out the newest offering from Jhené Aiko, “Sun/Son.” It’s a vocally wondrous cut with a lot of layered harmonies, syncopated chants, and comfortingly warm piano and synth keys that will calm you down. Complimenting this all is a sultry and steady drum beat with crisp rimshots that sit comfortably in the back of the mix. However, the name of the game is the Chilombo star’s captivating performance, as she fills in the empty spaces of this song with a lot of passion and with dynamic range.

Meanwhile, another highlight on R&B Season this week comes courtesy of The Book Of Clarence‘s soundtrack, on which the film’s director Jeymes Samuel worked extensively. Furthermore, he and Jorja Smith crafted another impassioned, orchestral, and grand piece with “Champagne,” soulfully bringing a slow funkiness to the collection. Another standouvt drama-tinged anthem is “best thing for me” by Samaria, which brings the tempo even further down. It’s a great mix of a traditional smooth R&B swing with soaring guitars, a high-pitched vocal display with plenty of personality, and whimsical chimes.

Last but not least, Ariana Grande is officially and finally back with her ’80s and dance-inspired single, “yes, and?” After resolving some relationship drama in 2023, we can’t wait to see what the pop darling brings this year. Kali Uchis is one of the more versatile Latin music artists we have going right now. The 29-year-old singer is delivering the perfect mixture of vibes on her fifth overall project, ORQUÍDEAS. Rumblings surrounding this album began back in early August of last year. One of half of the City Girls, JT, had the internet talking when she landed on the single lead, “Muñekita.” Kali would then go on to release four other tracks.

One of them had people showering her with “congratulations” comments. That is because in the music video for “Tu Córazon Es Mio / Diosa” revealed that Kali was pregnant! She is dating rapper Don Toliver and has been for quite some time. Obviously, Kali has plenty to be thankful and happy for right now. “Tu Córazon Es Mio” refers to her relationship with Don in one of the most beautifully sentimental moments on the record.”

Kali Uchis revealed today (January 11) that she is expecting her first child, as she and Don Toliver have been dating. The reveal might have been a shock to fans, however, who might not have known the two were together, especially without catching some of their public appearances.

How Long Have Don Toliver & Kali Uchis Been Dating?

Toliver confirmed his relationship with Kali Uchis during a July 2021 interview with W Magazine. He discussed the dating rumors, as Uchis appeared in both his “What You Need” and “Drugs N Hella Melodies” videos. In the latter, the two take a bubble bath together as Uchis wears lingerie — which raised the questions.

“We’re not crazy public or nothing like that,” he told the publication. “We just vibe.”

“I already had it in my mind to go out there and shoot a video with her incorporated into it, to make it a real-deal situation,” Toliver added, as they went to Colombia to shoot the videos earlier in the year. He also met her family while out there, but to keep the relationship private, he didn’t reveal much else.

Because of this, Uchis and Toliver had likely been dating at least a bit before then, enough to go to meet her parents.

Kali Uchis has a big year ahead of her. Her album Orquídeas is set to drop in a matter of hours, she’s performing at BottleRock Napa Valley this summer, and today (January 11), she revealed the biggest news of all: She announced she is pregnant with her and Don Toliver’s first baby together.

In a 30-second video shared on both Uchis and Toliver’s Instagram accounts, there’s professionally shot footage showing off Uchis’ baby bump, as well as clips of the couple at doctor’s appointments and clips of the two when they were kids themselves. Uchis captioned the post, “Starting our family [mending heart emoji] don’t take too long to get here little pooks, mom & dad can’t wait to share our life with you.”

It had been rumored for months that Uchis is pregnant, but now she has finally confirmed the news herself.

Toliver first confirmed he and Uchis were an item in 2021, saying, “We’re not crazy public or nothing like that. We just vibe.” He gushed about her in a 2023 interview with Nardwuar, saying, “She’s amazing. I love her artistry! Her artistry is beyond.”

During a REAL 92.3 LA interview, Uchis called starting her own family “one of my biggest goals in life,” noting that she’d ultimately like to have two kids.

The timing of the baby announcement makes this an especially exciting weekend for Uchis, whose new album is out on January 12.

This year, on Orquídeas, she will do it all again, but in Spanish.

In a statement, she discussed the delicate inspiration behind the forthcoming project. “The orchid is the national flower of Colombia, and we have more species of orchid than anywhere on earth,” she said. “I always felt distinctly intrigued and magnetized by the flower.
