Kelly Clarkson, The Beatles, Justin Timberlake, And Other Musicians Had Some Of TV’s Most Impactful Moments Ever, Says The Emmys

A few days ago, The Academy Of Television Arts & Sciences (aka the Television Academy, the organization behind the Primetime Emmy Awards), shared a list of the “Top 75 Most Impactful Television Moments.” As for how the list was decided, they explained, “In celebration of the Emmy Awards’ 75th Anniversary, we invited Television Academy members to review several hundred programs and news moments submitted by our Peer Group Executive Committees, and to then vote on those they felt have had the greatest impact on the viewing public over the past 75 years.”

Music has long played a major role in TV history, and this new list makes that clear. Two music moments made the top 10: The Beatles’ iconic performance on The Ed Sullivan Show is No. 3, behind only the Apollo 11 moon landing at No. 1 and 9/11 news coverage at No. 2. At No. 9 is the first music video that aired on MTV, The Buggles’ “Video Killed The Radio Star.”

Just outside the top 10, at No. 11, is an Elvis Presley performance on The Ed Sullivan Show. Other notable moments include Live Aid (No. 37); the first season finale of American Idol, which saw Kelly Clarkson named the winner (No. 44); the debut of Michael Jackson’s “Thriller” video on MTV (No. 48); Justin Timberlake exposing Janet Jackson’s breast during the Super Bowl XXXVIII Halftime Show (No. 61); and Whitney Houston singing the “Star Spangled Banner” before Super Bowl XXV (No. 65).

This list was compiled and shared ahead of the 75th Primetime Emmy Awards, which airs tonight (January 15) at 8 p.m. ET (learn how to watch the show here). Ahead of then, check out the full list here.

What Is NSYNC’s Best-Selling Album?

Today, public interest has shifted away from the classic teen pop formula of the traditional boy band. However, boy bands like NSYNC heavily dominated the music scene once upon a time, releasing albums that were big enough to cause record store stampedes. Subsequently, they disbanded, only occasionally appearing together in the following years. However, the iconic boy band returned in 2023 with their fast-rising single “Better Place” from the Trolls Band Together soundtrack.

While this reunion may signify bigger things, like an album, for example, we can’t be sure until it actually happens. Nevertheless, their current album lineup remains evergreen, and they have all sold impressive numbers since their releases. NSYNC came out swinging in 1997, releasing their self-titled debut album that is now Diamond-certified in the US. Despite its overwhelming success, however, one other album in their discography trumps it in terms of overall sales.

No String Attached: First Week Sales

NSYNC released No Strings Attached on March 21, 2000,  and it was one of the most anticipated albums of the new decade. Admittedly, their three other albums also achieved varying but significant levels of commercial success. However, neither of those albums can compare to the sales numbers of No Strings Attached. Upon its release, the album debuted atop the Billboard 200 chart. It set the record for one-week sales in the US, selling 2.4 million copies within its first week of release. NSYNC held this record for 15 years before it was broken by Adele in 2015 with 25.

NYSNC Takes Over The World

In the US, No Strings Attached has sold over 11 million units, becoming 11x Platinum-certified and awarding NYSNC one of the most successful albums ever. Besides the United States, the album is also certified in 12 other countries. For selling 60,000 certified units in Argentina, it earned a Platinum certification. It is also certified Platinum in Austria for 70,000 units, Denmark for 20,000 units, and New Zealand for 15,000 units.

Furthermore, No Strings Attached has sold over 100,000 and 150,000 units in Brazil and Germany, respectively, earning Gold certifications. Likewise, it has additional Gold certifications for selling 100,000 in Japan, 75,000 in Mexico, and 40,000 in the Netherlands. The album also achieved a Gold certification in Spain for selling 50,000 units. The last of its Gold certifications comes from the United Kingdom, where it has sold 206,000 units. Finally, it is certified 7x Platinum in Canada for selling over 700,000 units.

Undoubtedly, NSYNC released one of the most defining albums of the boy band era. Interestingly, the group’s self-titled debut album is also Diamond-certified by the RIAA, as it has sold over 10 million album units. Nevertheless, despite the impressive worldwide sales of NSYNC, it is utterly decimated by the numbers of No Strings Attached. Notably, on the decade-end Billboard albums chart for the 2000s, No Strings Attached took the topmost position.

The Quintessential Boy Band

The success of No Strings Attached solidified NSYNC’s status as one of their era’s most successful boy bands. It also helped solidify lead singer Justin Timberlake’s mainstream appeal, giving rise to his eventual solo stardom. The album’s lead single, “Bye Bye Bye,” is an infectious pop anthem that continues to captivate audiences. It was accompanied by a visually striking music video that showcased the group’s impeccable choreography.

Similarly, “It’s Gonna Be Me,” another standout single from the album, further solidified NSYNC’s reign. With its irresistible chorus and undeniable charisma, the song topped the Billboard Hot 100 and became a pop culture touchstone. Additionally, the other singles, “This I Promise You” and “I’ll Never Stop,” also enjoyed considerable commercial success.

Altogether, these singles significantly contributed to the overall success of the album. In retrospect, No Strings Attached remains a cultural touchstone, encapsulating the spirit of the late ’90s and early 2000s. Its impact on the music industry and enduring popularity among fans showcase the timelessness of the group’s music. NSYNC was a total package act, dominating in stage presence, singles, and, of course, albums.

Timbaland Trends After Controversial Britney Spears And Justin Timberlake Comments

A lot of people have been talking about Justin Timberlake and Britney Spears in the wake of Britney’s new memoir. She released The Woman In Me last month which drew quite a bit of attention for her honesty in regard to how the music industry at large treated her. One of the people who came out looking the worst as a result of the memoir was Justin Timberlake. Britney revealed all kinds of details about their relationship which left fans pretty upset with Timberlake.

The first big reveal came in the form of the bombshell that Timberlake got Spears pregnant while the two were dating in the early 2000s. They reportedly both agreed that it wasn’t the right time to have a child though. In the memoir itself, Britney discusses the “excruciating” process of ending the pregnancy in secret. Even more disrespectful for fans was that Timberlake reportedly broke up with Spears by text. The backlash from her fans got so bad that Timberlake was forced to turn off all the comments on his Instagram.

Timbaland Weighs In On Justin Timberlake And Britney Spears

Now, one of Justin Timberlake’s collaborators is drawing controversy for his thoughts on the situation. Timbaland says that Timberlake should have put “a muzzle” on Britney in the wake of her memoir. The comments are so obviously disrespectful that backlash erupted online pretty much immediately. Timbaland even found himself trending on Twitter from how many people were expressing their dissatisfaction with his comments.

“It’s crazy how it takes one stupid comment for me to look at someone completely differently…” one comment on the situation reads. “A MUZZLE!? on a woman who is speaking her truth and after being traumatized her whole life? I’m genuinely shocked and disappointed timbaland said this,” another comment reads. While some have tried to come up with justifications for the comments, most are calling him out for the disrespect. Timbaland Wanted Justin Timberlake To Put A ‘Muzzle’ On Britney Spears, But Fans Think He’s The One Who Needs It

Hip-hop has had a misogyny problem almost as long as it has been around. And yes, it’s a reflection of the larger society around it, but it’s easier to see it when everyone in the genre has a microphone and a platform from which to blast some of their most wrongheaded ideas.

In recent years, plenty has improved. More women than ever are charting and making their voices heard, and many more overt examples of sexism are being called out. That’s what happened when Timbaland, the veteran super producer responsible for some of pop music’s biggest hits, overstepped his bounds as he addressed Britney Spears’ recent tell-all memoir.

During an onstage discussion at the Afrotech Conference in Austin, Texas this past weekend, Timbaland was asked by an attendee if he’d seen the headlines coming out about the book, especially in reference to his “Cry Me A River” collaborator Justin Timberlake. In response, Tim joked, “I wanted to call JT and say, ‘Man! You gotta put a muzzle on that girl.’”

While the crowd in attendance laughed — because, again, the society around us is still rooted in sexism — fans online didn’t appreciate his comment, calling him out in replies to viral reposts of the video of the response.

“Timbaland is the one who needs a muzzle,” wrote one fan. “We didn’t forget about his gross Aaliyah comments. He’s still upset Britney didn’t want to work with him. A nasty man.”

“why do men feel like they can silence women,” another wondered. “he’s a weirdo.”

Check out more responses to Timbaland’s ill-advised joke below.
