Spotify And Apple Music Payments To Artists Would Increase Significantly Under A New Congressional Bill

Streaming services like Spotify and Apple Music have made music consumption easier than ever. The issue, though, lies with how artists are paid by the platforms. In short, there are often complaints. Now, there are lawmakers who want to do something about that.

Yesterday (March 6), congresswoman Rashida Tlaib and congressman Jamaal Bowman (founder of the Congressional Hip Hop Task Force) introduced the Living Wage For Musicians Act. Per a post on Tlaib’s website, the legislation, created in partnership with United Musicians And Allied Workers (UMAW), aims “to compensate artists and musicians more fairly at a penny per stream when their music plays on streaming services.”

The post goes on to note, “Currently, musicians make tiny fractions of a penny per stream, while streaming has grown to represent 84% of recorded music industry revenue in the US. Spotify, the world’s largest streaming service, pays rights-holders an average per-stream royalty of $0.003, which means it takes artists more than 800,000 monthly streams to equal a full-time $15/hour job.”

So, essentially, Tlaib and Bowman hope to more than triple the current per-stream royalty currently paid out by Spotify.

More specifically, the post explains:

“The Living Wage for Musicians Act would tax providers’ non-subscription revenues and add a small fee to the price of music streaming subscriptions. DSPs like Spotify offering interactive music streaming services would pass their taxed revenues and royalties to a non-profit collection and distribution fund, that would in turn pay artists in proportion to their monthly streams. The bill includes a maximum payout per track, per month, in order to generate more sustainable income for a broader and more diverse set of artists beyond the world’s most popular performers. […] By creating a fund that directly compensates recording artists and musicians, the bill will allow vastly more artists to achieve a living wage from music, enabling them to pay rent, raise a family, buy a home, and invest in their future.”

Josh Levi Returns To ‘UPROXX Sessions’ With A Swaggering Performance Of ‘She Keeps Comin’

Josh Levi is back again for another smooth performance on UPROXX Sessions. Earlier this week, he helped kick off the latest season of Uproxx’s one-take performance show with his single “Birthday Dance,” and today, the multitalented Texan returns to perform another standout from his 2022 project DISC TWO, “She Keeps Coming.”

In contrast to the upbeat “Birthday Dance,” “She Keeps Coming” is a chest-beating ballad (an amusing combination) in which he boasts to a romantic rival that their mutual interest is choosing Levi. Naturally, there’s a bit of a double entendre with the title, explaining exactly why Josh is the superior man. “He’s gotta be high, he can’t be sober,” he sings, “Can’t blame the next guy who has your old girl.” In this performance, he also nods to one of his inspirations, slipping in some lyrics from Beyoncé’s 2003 solo breakout hit “Crazy In Love.”

You can watch Josh Levi’s performance of “She Keeps Comin’” for UPROXX Sessions above.

UPROXX Sessions is Uproxx’s performance show featuring the hottest up-and-coming acts you should keep an eye on. Featuring creative direction from LA promotion collective, Ham On Everything, and taking place on our “bathroom” set designed and painted by Julian Gross, UPROXX Sessions is a showcase of some of our favorite performers, who just might soon be yours, too.

Josh Levi is a Warner Music artist. Uproxx is an independent subsidiary of Warner Music Group.

The Island Boys’ Latest Provocative Post Rouses New Wave Of Hate

Social media influencers The Island Boys have once again viral for a semi-incestuous post. A video posted alongside one of their regular collaborators shows the twin brothers touching one another sensually and briefly kissing one another. This of course has led to a new wave of hate against the controversial influencers. Last year, the pair went viral for a photo in which they simulated oral sex on each other. This weird aspect of their persona is by the far the most notable part of their infamy.

However, it’s not just the brothers who are getting hate for the new post. “They’ve been doing this for over a year now. You don’t have to share all their sus activities just for engagement,” one person wrote on a No Jumper post reporting on the photo. “Only ur page promote this bs. we dont gaf,” added another. The pair allegedly make music. However, they are overwhelmingly known for their bizarre social media posts, feuds with other content creators, and outrage over the reaction to their bizarre social media posts.

The Island Boys Debut A New Member

Meanwhile, last September, the ever-controversial pair seemingly added a third to what is now a semi-incestuous thruple. The new member of the group, who is seemingly named Enzo, has now appeared in a number of the group’s TikToks. His earliest appearance appears to be in TikToks from late August. Some internet research appears to confirm that Enzo is a long-time member of the Island Boys house. However, there appears to have been some beef between him and the other Boys.

However, he’s back now and has gotten fully into the swing of the group’s boundary-pushing content. In one video he is seen intimately caressing another of the group as the popular TikTok sound “thank you to my dad” plays. The video, whose comments are turned off, is simply entitled “daddies”. In another video, Enzo caresses Fly’s ear as the latter performs for the camera.

Nicki Minaj’s Husband Kenneth Petty Hilariously Nails Her Lyric Challenge: Watch

It’s not often that Nicki Minaj shows off her man on social media, but when she does, she never fails to put him to the test. In a new clip, she and Kenneth Petty are seen chatting with fans during a livestream when she decided to challenge him to finish some of her song lyrics. According to her, he claims to be her biggest supporter, so the task should be no problem.

“You say you the biggest Barb so now you gotta finish the lyric,” she said right before rolling into “Pink Birthday.” Petty was able to finish the line, but unfortunately, he was just a tad off. “Lowkey ‘cuz we just that ill now, ain’t never had a…” she rhymed, with him adding, “Bad b*tch ’til now.”

Nicki Minaj Challenges Kenneth Petty

The actual lyrics are, “Ain’t never had a ill b*tch ’til now,” forcing Nicki to correct him. Luckily, he made up for the mistake with her next line. “Post a pic, got ’em jackin’ like…,” Nicki began. Without any trace of hesitation, he completed the lyrics, spitting “Like Jill now.” Nicki seemed pretty impressed by Petty’s ability to recite most of her lyrics, ultimately deciding that he “won Nicki trivia.” It looks like Papa Bear’s dad might be a huge Barb after all.

“I ain’t gonna lie, I ain’t know you was gonna get the words like that at least once,” she noted, looking shocked that he managed to ace the challenge. “That’s all I listen to!” he then reminded her. What do you think of Nicki Minaj challenging Kenneth Petty to finish her song lyrics? How’d he do? Are you surprised that he won? Do you think you could do better, or not? Ben Simmons Shut Down For The Season

After just 15 games, Ben Simmons is once again heading to the injured list. “Ben Simmons will remain out for the remainder of the season while he consults with specialists and explores treatment options for the nerve impingement in his lower back. Simmons, along with his representatives and Nets medical personnel, are currently in discussions with numerous experts to determine the course of action that will provide him with the best opportunity for long-term sustainable health,” the Nets said in a statement.

Despite confidence that 2023/24 would be his comeback season, Simmons was stymied by a recurring back injury. This caused him to miss 38 games in the middle of the season. Furthermore, the same injury had led him to miss the five games prior to the Nets 86ing for the rest of the year. It remains to be seen what will what with the former No. 1 pick. He is a free agent after the 2024/25 season.

Cam’ron Makes On-Air Apology To Ben Simmons

With Simmons shut down after 15 games, his season will likely be remembered for his beef with Cam’ron. The altercation spurred a rare apology from Killa. The rapper and It Is What It Is host had previously insinuated that he and Simmons had gotten involved in an altercation. This reportedly occurred backstage during a Nets game. Cam’ron clarified that he misrepresented the situation and that he was sorry for doing that.

However, reaction to the apology was split. Many social media users were surprised that Cam’ron even had the capacity to apologize. This is given his history of verbose and unapologetic statements live on air. After all, this is the same man who responded to divorce drama by asking about the wife’s cleavage and then getting a massage from her. However, the other set of responses were more expressing their surprise that Cam’ron had taken things as far as he had in the first place.

Eminem Calls Shooting The Video “Such A Big Deal”

According to Eminem, the music video was the first he had ever filmed on such a large scale. He was in completely new territory, as his first-ever video was done on the cheap. “The video was the first big-budget thing I had ever done,” he explains. “It was such a big deal to experience a soundstage, a full crew, and all the things that come with shooting something at that scale. It was such a huge learning curve to see what a big Hollywood production looked like.”

He also reveals how the video’s concept came to life, noting how Dr. Dre was previously acquainted with the director, Phil Atwell. “They created the vision,” Em says. “It’s hard to imagine the song existing without that video,” he then adds, “They perfectly complement each other.” Atwell later went on to direct various other videos for the rapper, including “Stan,” “The Real Slim Shady,” and more. Donnell Rawlings & DJ Envy Butt Heads On “The Breakfast Club”

55-year-old Donnell Rawlings is a man who’s best known for being able to lighten the mood in virtually any room. Lately, however, the comedian’s been building a reputation for having a sharp tongue that lashes out at his critics – or anyone who tries to interrupt him, as DJ Envy learned on The Breakfast Club today (March 7). At one point on the show, Rawlings was chatting with co-host Jess Hilarious when he suddenly called out her colleague for breaking up their discussion about the tough competition in the world of comedy.

“I’m not talking to you, Envy. I’m talking to a comedian,” the father of one curtly said. “Do you want to do comedy? You can start like we did, you can do open mics. I know you have a platform and you think you can do anything,” Rawlings further lashed out at the media personality. Before long, the guest also referenced Envy’s infamous 2023 alleged real estate scam, making him feel even worse about the messy situation. “Do we interrupt car show promotions like this?” Rawlings asked.
