The music documentary captures the hugely kinetic Hyphy movement and brings the sights and sounds of the San Francisco Bay Area’s most influential musical movement of the past 30 years to life on the screen.
This music documentary feature traces Hyphy’s genesis on Bay Area streets and examines its influence with interviews from legendary figures such as Keak da Sneak and Mistah FAB to modern-day artists such as Kamaiyah, Rafael Casal, P-Lo, and G-Eazy who grew up during the movement and were deeply influenced by it.Historical context is provided by columnists and academics such as Pendarvis Harshaw and Dr. Andrea L.S. Moore.
“Hyphy had a massive influence on me as a teenager,” says Laurence Madrigal, director of WE WERE HYPHY. “I grew up in Antioch and Hyphy was everywhere. It was on the streets, in our cars, in the clothes we wore, and in the way we spoke. I’ve always wanted to share my love of Hyphy with the world and this film is a love song to the era!”
The film is a beautifully shot, heartbreakingly sweet story detailing the highs and lows of the Hyphy movement from its inauspicious start which saw a plethora of Bay Area artists crafting and selling CDs from the trunk of their cars to an unwaveringly loyal fanbase who supported the artists and partied with a hedonistic abandon at side shows. It is a love song to all those who were brought together by the sounds of the Hyphy era. The goal of the documentary is to give the audience a look into Hyphy and experience it from two perspectives – through the eyes of the artists who created the iconic sound – and through the Bay Areans who grew up listening to the music, speaking the language, rocking the fashion, swangin’ the cars, and most importantly of all, getting hyphy.
“While Hyphy had a massively formative influence on the kids growing up during the era,” says Laurence, “I think there’s a wonderful universality to the film. Everyone feels that the music they listened to as teenagers was uniquely special. And it really is. It doesn’t matter if you grew up listening to punk, or hip-hop, or classical music, the love you had for the music and the love you had for the friends you shared it with stays with you forever. And it’s this beautiful, almost lonesome nostalgia, that we tried to capture with the film. It’s a deeply personal film for me and my sincere hope is that the film captures the essence of Hyphy and does justice to the artists of the time and, most importantly of all, to the fans who shared in the experience!”
One of the fastest players in the NFL is taking his speed to South Beach. According to Adam Schefter, the Kansas City Chiefs have traded Tyreek Hill to the Miami Dolphins for a hall of draft capital. The Dolphins will sign Hill to a new four-year deal worth $120 million as part of the trade.
Hill posted a farewell letter to the Chiefs and their fans on Twitter later Wednesday:
Hill is a six-time Pro Bowler and three-time first-team All-Pro and helped the Chiefs win Super Bowl LIV after the 2019 season.
Reports of the Chiefs shopping Hill began Wednesday morning when contract talks between both sides stalled. The Chiefs made an offer that would have made Hill one of the highest-paid wideouts in the NFL, but the superstar elected to explore his options elsewhere, according to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport.
Hill will look to help a talented wide receivers corp in Miami get over the hump with a talented and questionable quarterback in Tua Tagovailoa.
Hill will be out to prove he is a top 3 wide receiver in the league and not a product of a system in Kansas City.
Beyoncé is allegedly talking with producers of the Oscars to perform during the show. According to Variety, organizers of the awards show want the pop queen to sing “Be Alive.”
It’s a track she co-wrote for the movie King Richard, which tells of the story of tennis stars Venus and Serena Williams’ father.
The film currently boasts six nominations, including Best Picture.
Five songs are up for an Oscar award. Billie Eilish and her brother will sing their James Bond theme “No Time to Die.” Reba McEntire will perform a song from the movie Four Good Days while Sebastian Yatra will cover a hit from Encanto.
If the performance gets the green light, Beyoncé’s performance will be broadcast to the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood on March 27th.
Call it the Deshaun Watson effect. The Atlanta Falcons have traded former NFL MVP Matt Ryan to the Indianapolis Colts after striking out on getting Watson.
Atlanta selected Ryan with the third pick of the 2008 draft to rehabilitate the franchise’s image in the wake of the Michael Vick dogfighting scandal. Ryan would win an NFL MVP award and lead the Falcons to a Super Bowl appearance, in which the Falcons blew a 28-3 4th quarter lead to the New England Patriots.
Ryan joins a Colts team that came within one win of making the playoffs last season, and many observers blamed the performance of now-departed quarterback Carson Wentz for the team’s failure. The Colts’ odds to win the Super Bowl jumped from +3000 to +2500, per BetMGM.
For the Falcons, it’s officially rebuilding season. After three straight losing seasons, the Falcons will try to find reload and rebuild on the fly.
According to a post from his official Twitter page, Kid Cudi revealed he’ll be working on his directorial debut with Teddy, a comedy slated for Netflix later this year.
Based on the Cleveland native’s 2009 hit, Pursuit Of Happiness”, Teddy will not only be directed by Cudi, but the script was also wittten by Cudder, but will also star the “Day And Nite” rapper. The Netflix feature film also boasts Shawn “Jay-Z” Carter and LeBron James as executive producers of the film.
Writing a message to his fans via social media, Cudi said, “I added a lot of my own personal struggles and experiences in it, so this film is very close to my heart,” he wrote. “I know that, deep down, this movie will help people the same ways music has… It’s trippy, it’s fun, it’s sad, it’s life.”
Earlier in March, X hit theaters where Kid Cudi plays the role of a ’70s porn star in the film A24
Longtime NFL broadcaster Al Michaels will leave NBC Sports for Amazon as the lead commentator for the entity’s new Thursday Night Football package.
Micheals took to Twitter to show love to NBC Sports for the time well spent with the company and let the world know he is heading to Amazon.
Michaels will be joined in the booth by longtime college football analyst Kirk Herbstreit, moonlighting between his ESPN college football duties and Thursday night NFL games.
Sources told Marchand that Michaels would be paid in the “Joe Buck neighborhood” to join Amazon. Buck recently left Fox for ESPN to become the lead commentator for Monday Night Football. Buck’s deal with ESPN is for five years and $75 million.
Amazon purchased the entire slate of Thursday Night Football games from the NFL last year. Micheals gives the upstart coverage a veteran voice for the telecast.
Jameis Winston will remain as the New Orleans Saints quarterback. Winston returns to the Saints on a two-year deal worth $28 million.
Winston was 5-2 with the Saints before suffering a season-ending torn ACL injury. Before that, Winston was on pace to have one of the best years of his career, completing 59.0% of his passes for 1,170 yards and 14 touchdowns to just three interceptions. Back in 2019, Winston led the NFL in passing yards while with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
If Winston is healthy and ready to go, all expectations are that he’ll be the Week One starter in New Orleans. If it takes Winston longer than ten months to be prepared to go, backup quarterbacks Ian Book and Blake Bortles would likely compete to start until Winston is healthy.
Ice Cube has been pretty vocal about his disdain towards Warner Bros for stalling the final installment of the Friday franchise. Now that John Witherspoon and Tommy Lister Jr. have passed, it is unsure whether Last Friday will come out or not.
Since Last Friday is stalled, Cube seems to not want any other adaptions of Friday to come about. He even responded to a fake story posted on Twitter claiming that a O’Shea Jackson Jr. directed Friday prequel starring Druski and Vince Staples was in the works and headed to HBO Max.
“This is blasphemy,” Cube tweeted in response to the false claim.
This isn’t the first time the Twitter page spread fake news about an upcoming project. O’shea Jackson Jr. actually fell for one of the fake tweets regarding him being cast in a Boyz N The Hood remake produced by 50 Cent.
According to a report, disagreements between Cube and Warner Bros. about the script stalled development on the fourth installment on the Friday franchise. According to a report by the Wall Street Journal, Warner Bros. executives “told him prison isn’t funny,” and that “they felt the fans of the franchise wanted to see the characters in their familiar settings instead of behind bars for much of the movie.”
Ice Cube’s lawyer then accused Warner Bros. of discrimination, something that was quickly refuted. “We strongly disagree with any claims of discriminatory treatment, and stand by our ongoing and proven commitment to support diverse voices and storytellers and will continue to do so as we move forward,” Warner Bros. wrote in regards to Cube’s lawyer’s claims.
Just when you thought Snoop’s brand couldn’t get any stronger, think again.
The hip hop legend and music mogul is set to join Call Of Duty: Warzone, Vanguard, and Mobile as a playable operator. According to IGN, the news came from a Call of Duty blog. Player’s first chance at playing as the legend will be in season 3 of Call of Duty Mobile. They will have to enter into a lucky draw on April 1 to be able to play as Snoop.
“The D O Double G is back in Call of Duty and this time I’m in the freakin’ game!” Snoop said in the COD blog post. “Excited to be working with the COD team to bring some fly features for you all to enjoy. It’s dope….. y’all can play as me and get these sick items that have Snoop written all over them. Check it out.”
Snoops character will be fitted with a 24k gold embroidered outfit and a signature gold plated and diamond-encrusted SMG.
On April 19, the Snoop Dogg Operator Bundle will become available in Call of Duty: Warzone and Vanguard. This bundle is different from the COD Mobile bundle that “includes ten items – three of which are exclusive to Vanguard – and a full Operator progression track. These items include Weapon XP for Snoop’s weapon, three alternate outfits, and other cosmetic items.”
However, this isn’t the first time Snoop has been a part of the COD franchise before. In a Call of Duty: Ghosts DLC, players had the option of switching the announcers voice to that of Snoop.
