Congressman Hakeem Jeffries Pens Hip Hop 50 Essay For African Voices Magazine

unnamed 1

Marking Hip Hop History Month, Congressman Hakeem Jeffries, the House Democratic Leader, published the following essay in African Voices Magazine. In 2021, Congress established November as Hip Hop History Month.

“It was all a dream.

I used to read Word Up! magazine.

Salt’n’Pepa and Heavy D up in the limousine.

Hangin’ pictures on my wall.

Every Saturday Rap Attack, Mr. Magic, Marley Marl.”

Those words were uttered by the late, great Notorious B.I.G. But they also vividly described my own experiences growing up as a teenager in Central Brooklyn during the mid to late 1980s. Before Yo! MTV Raps and Rap City, all we had were Rap Attack, a rival show hosted by Kool DJ Red Alert and the iconic Video Music Box led by VJ Ralph McDaniels. It was through these venues that we were first exposed to the latest artists, including the rise of LL Cool J, Big Daddy Kane, Eric B and Rakim, KRS-One, MC Lyte, NWA and EPMD. After hearing new records, we couldn’t wait to talk about the compelling music we were just exposed to during homeroom or in the cafeteria the next day.

Early on in high school, I had two fantastical career objectives. The first was Hip Hop stardom, as I was casually rapping under the name Kid Fresh. The second was to become a point guard for the New York Knicks. Neither of these worked out.

Nevertheless, I still fondly remember my highest profile rap battle against a classmate named Sam, right in front of Midwood High School after the last bell. While memories are hazy, one of my boys seems to recall that I won the showdown on points.

Music is a soundtrack for our lives, none more compelling for me than Hip Hop. To this day, it allows me to mark and reflect upon different parts of my life based on the records that were banging at the time.

MC Run could do no wrong upon hearing Sucker MCs as a pre-teen. The BDP conflict with MC Chan captivated us in High School. When A Tribe Called Quest’s “Scenario” featuring Busta Rhymes was played during a Kappa party at College In The Woods up at Binghamton, the crowd went wild. And my eventual graduate school roommate while I was at Georgetown, Adrian Fenty, introduced me to Dr. Dre’s classic album “The Chronic.”

The Hip Hop landscape was forever changed by Dre, Snoop, Ice Cube, Tupac and a compelling array of West Coast rappers. But not to be outdone, the Wu-Tang Clan, Fugees, Nas, Biggie, Lil Kim, Mobb Deep, Jay-Z, DMX and a host of incredible new artists brought the East back. Balance was restored to the Hip Hop universe. And of course, OutKast, Ludacris and the South would also have something to say.

When the Notorious B.I.G. dropped “Who Shot Ya” during my first year of law school, it lit up the parties hosted by aspiring Black lawyers at NYU and Columbia. We studied Supreme Court case law during the week, and listened to Bad Boy, Tupac and Jay-Z on the weekend. As a young lawyer in Manhattan in the early 2000s, we debated the back and forth between “Takeover” and “Ether,” admiring the sophisticated wordplay of both songs.

To this day, when locked into political combat with an adversary and in search of inspiration, those classics remain my go to records — along with Queen Latifah’s “U.N.I.T.Y.”, Tupac’s “Against All Odds” and 50 Cent’s “Back Down.” When declaring victory during my first congressional race in June 2012, “Empire State of Mind” was blaring in the background. Yeah, I’m out that Brooklyn.

The older you get, the more things begin to come full circle. Hip Hop has evolved, but the power of its music, culture, language, fashion and art remain constant. It’s just that now I have to rely on my sons to keep me up on the latest drop from Kendrick Lamar, or inform me that “Lit” is the new “Hot.”

Throughout my time in elected office, I have had the privilege of representing the neighborhoods where Biggie Smalls and a host of iconic Brooklyn MCs were raised. Hip Hop is not just an important part of my life, but it’s intimately connected to the district I serve.

Six years ago, on March 9, 2017, I decided to go to the House Floor to deliver a tribute to the Notorious B.I.G. to commemorate the 20th anniversary of his tragic death. When I told the staff of my plan, one of them responded: “You can’t do that!”

So I asked the team to check the congressional record and validate my suspicion that other prominent artists like Elvis Presley, Frank Sinatra and Bruce Springsteen had been acknowledged on the House Floor by Members of Congress in the past. About an hour later, a staff member confirmed that all three had received multiple congressional tributes. I responded: “Great. Christopher Wallace is about to get one as well.”

The framers of the Constitution designed the House to be the institution closest to the American people, and reflect their hopes, dreams, aspirations, fears, concerns, anxieties and passions. It’s what makes the House of Representatives so unique. For me, that has meant authentically bringing to Washington all that Hip Hop music has represented for the communities I am privileged to serve. During this challenging time in America, House Democrats will continue to fight For the People. And I will continue to do my best to always represent for the culture.

Published in the November/December Edition of African Voices Magazine as Part of their Special50th Anniversary of Hip Hop Issue.

THE YSL TRIAL: Judge in YSL Trial Requests Media Restraint Amidst Juror Privacy Concerns

Here Comes the Judge: Meet Ural D. Glanville, the Judge in Charge of the Young Thug/YSL Case

In a surprising turn of events, Judge Ural Glanville, presiding over the Young Thug YSL (Young Stoner Life) RICO trial, has asked media outlets not to record or share images from the trial after photos of jurors surfaced online. The move comes as a response to growing concerns about the potential impact on the jurors’ privacy and the overall integrity of the trial.

The high-profile RICO trial, which involves several members of the YSL collective, including the iconic rapper Young Thug, has been closely followed by fans and media alike. However, the recent incident involving the exposure of juror identities has prompted Judge Glanville to reevaluate the level of media access to the proceedings.

The controversy erupted when images of jurors participating in the trial were circulated on various social media platforms, raising questions about the potential influence on the jurors’ impartiality and safety. The judge, known for maintaining a strict and fair courtroom, expressed deep concern over the breach of juror privacy.

In a rare move, Judge Glanville addressed the media directly, urging them to exercise caution and responsibility in their trial coverage. The concern is about the potential impact on the current case and the precedent it could set for future trials. He emphasized the importance of safeguarding the judicial process and ensuring that jurors feel protected from undue outside influence.

Legal experts weigh the judge’s decision, noting that protecting juror privacy is paramount to maintaining a fair and unbiased trial. In high-profile cases like this, where public interest is intense, the risk of juror intimidation or tampering becomes a significant concern. By limiting media coverage, the judge aims to create a more controlled environment that prioritizes the jurors’ safety and impartiality.

Young Thug’s legal team has refrained from commenting on the incident, focusing on the ongoing proceedings. The rapper, whose real name is Jeffery Lamar Williams, faces charges related to racketeering and other criminal activities allegedly tied to the YSL collective. The trial, which has already seen its fair share of legal twists and turns, is expected to continue for several weeks.

While expressing their commitment to transparent reporting, media outlets are grappling with the delicate balance between informing the public and respecting the privacy of those involved in the trial. The Judge’s request adds a layer of complexity to the already intricate dynamics of high-profile court cases. It underscores the challenges faced by both the legal system and the media in the age of instantaneous information dissemination.

As the trial unfolds, the judge’s decision to limit media recording and sharing serves as a reminder that, even in the age of digital transparency, certain aspects of the judicial process must be carefully guarded to ensure a fair and just outcome.

Jonathan Majors Arrives on Opening Day of Trial Holding a Bible and Meagan Good’s Hand

Jonathan Majors Dropped From Three Projects, Including Otis Redding Biopic

Jonathan Majors hit day one of his trial on Wednesday in New York City Criminal Court. According to Variety, Majors arrived carrying a bible and holding hands with Meagan Good.

Ahead of the start of the trial, Majors pleaded not guilty to four charges of assault and aggravated harassment. He faces a year in jail if convicted.

During day one, the Majors team requested that “contested evidence” remain sealed and not allowed to be publicly viewed due to the high-profile case. Media filed a motion in opposition, which attorney Seth Zuckerman believes would not allow a fair trial for Majors. Judge Michael Gaffey ruled in the defense’s favor of keeping the documents sealed.

Majors will not have to testify and also do not need to appear.

Ahead of the trial, one Hollywood insider believes the Marvel train is in serious trouble with the ending of Loki.

In case you aren’t heavy into the comic book world, Majors plays the role of Kang the Conquerer, a central figure in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and the cornerstone of various releases currently out, releasing, or to be released in the future. That includes the Avengers film, which is currently slated for 2026.

“Marvel is truly fucked with the whole Kang angle,” says the insider who has seen all of Loki to Variety. “And they haven’t had an opportunity to rewrite until very recently [because of the WGA strike]. But I don’t see a path to how they move forward with him.”

Last month, reports emerged stating Jonathan Majors’ domestic violence accuser will be charged with assault concerning the incident that led to the actor’s arrest earlier this year.

According to Radar Online, the accuser, Grace Jabbari, was issued a summons to appear in New York court for the assault. Jabbari is “expected to voluntarily report to the NYPD’s 10th precinct in the near future” according to the Office of the Deputy Commissioner, Public Information of the New York Police Department. The charges will not be pursued by further.

Previously, Jabbari stated Majors hit her with an “open hand” leading to a substantial injury behind her ear. Jabbari also claimed Majors caused swelling after he grabbed her hand and “put his hand on her neck, causing bruising and substantial pain.”

A charge for the alleged strangulation was dropped.

DJ Envy, Cesar Pina Sued Under Civil RICO Violation and New Jersey Consumer Fraud Act

DJ Envy Goes Against Lawyer's Advice, Makes Statement Against Rumored Involvement in Real State Scam

DJ Envy and Cesar Pina have been named in a new lawsuit over their real estate business practices. In court documents obtained by AllHipHop, Envy, and Pina are being sued by Derik Deangelo, Chamblin Group Real Estate Ventures LLC, and Reispec Developments LLC.

The suit claims state the two men used their “Flipping New Jersey” seminars as “funnels to draw in victims” to their real estate scam. The lawsuit includes violations of the New Jersey Consumer Fraud Act, a breach of contract, a civil RICO violation, fraudulent transfer, and more. The plaintiffs are seeking a jury trial and request $2,000,000 in damages.

“During these private consultations and meet and greets, members of the Pina network attempted to ‘size up’ the financial resources of each attendee and solicited individuals with sufficiently high net worth to ‘partner’ with Pina, DJ Envy, and other members of the network in real estate ‘joint ventures,’” the docs read. “During these meetings, Pina also offered his personal ‘consulting services’ wherein he made himself available for one-on-one private meetings with guests at his office for flat rate fees ranging from $1,500 to $2,500 per meeting and more.”

You can read more of the court documents here.

Recently, DJ Envy’s cohost, Charlamagne Tha God, spoke with the Rap Radar podcast and revealed that he would keep the show going if Envy was no longer part of the crew.

“‘The Breakfast Club’ is bigger than any of us as individuals,” Charla said. “I’ve always felt like that.”

He added, “I’ve never felt like The Breakfast Club was just a show about three individuals. That’s always where my mind was.”

Serena Williams Admits She is ‘Not OK’ Following Second Childbirth

Serena Williams and Alexis Ohanian Welcome Second Daughter, Adira River Ohanian

Last night, Serena Williams revealed like many mothers she was experiencing a moment where she ‘does not feel ok.’ The 23-Grand Slam champion took to X (formally known as Twitter) to describe how she was feeling since giving birth 3-months ago. In her post, the mom of two had a simple message that many parents might relate to.

“I am not ok today,” she tweeted. “And that’s ok to not be ok.”

Serena Williams Secures Two-Book Deal, Including an ‘Intimate’ and ‘Open-Hearted’ Memoir

She continued, “No one is ok every single day. If you are not ok today I’m with you. There’s always tomorrow 😘 Love you.”

This is not the first time the athlete has used her voice to spread mental health awareness. Last year, she opened up on her wellness journey during a discussion with singer Selena Gomez, for her Wondermind platform.

“Mental fitness for me is just really learn[ing] to shut down,” Williams said. “And you know I did this years ago, before even mental health was a topic among everyone’s mind.”

She added, “It was more just like, alright, I’m shutting myself down today. Just subconsciously, it was something I’ve always done. And so now that I know that it’s so important to just put yourself first, especially mentally, I always have shut down moments. I have serious boundaries and I don’t let anyone cross those boundaries.”
