Uproxx, Circulate, and Bricks & Wood Teamed Up To Celebrate The BMC And The Legacy Of Black Music

The Black Music Collective officially kicked off Grammy weekend last night with its annual Global Impact Award gala, an event that saw prominent Black creators and professionals from the music industry gather for a celebration of music and representation. This year’s event, which was held at the Hollywood Palladium, was particularly special as it marked the 50th anniversary of hip-hop. As such, the gala honored some of the biggest icons of the genre including Missy Elliot, Dr. Dre, Lil Wayne, and music industry executive Sylvia Rhone.

To celebrate the mission of the BMC, which seeks to highlight the inclusion, recognition, and advancement of Black music and its creators and professionals in the industry, Uproxx linked up with two of LA’s buzziest streetwear designers, Corey Populus of Circulate and Kacey Lynch of Bricks & Wood for a special t-shirt capsule collection that highlighted hip-hop’s 50th as well as this year’s Grammy theme, ‘Love Music.’

“The main inspiration behind this collaboration was definitely music,” says Populus, “Design and music to me go hand and hand… One of my favorite designers, Reid Miles, gained a lot of notoriety for creating the blueprint for how jazz records looked having done all of the Blue Note Records covers.”

The five t-shirt collection consisted of graphic designs that played off of the Grammy’s annual theme, made reference to the BMC gala, and recalled the iconic jazz album covers of the past filtered through a contemporary lens. One of the highlights of the collection also makes reference to a now-famous photo of Tyler the Creator receiving his first Grammy for Best Rap Album, which he took in home in 2019 for IGOR.

“I thought it would be cool to create this fake Jazz band called the Circulate Trio and pretty much this was a jazz love record by the Circulations, which was then presented by Uproxx and Circulate Records. I also chose purple/gold to represent LA,” says Populus, showing the deep attention to detail and affection for storytelling through visual design that makes Circulate such a vital brand in our contemporary streetwear scene.

The shirts were gifted at the gala to VIP attendees, making them officially some of the rarest designs to ever come out of Circulate and Bricks & Wood. Consider each of these shirts a grail!

The 65th Grammy Awards show will air live this Sunday, February 5th. Take a look at each design as well as highlights from last night’s BMC event below.

Cam’ron Turned Down $300K Offer For Iconic Pink Coat: “They Didn’t Deserve It”

Despite the demand for Cam’ron’s iconic pink fur coat that he debuted over 20 years ago, the rapper isn’t willing to sell it to anyone. You could imagine many individuals offered to purchase the jacket from him over the years. The cultural value outweighs any dollar sign attached to it, especially if the potential buyer doesn’t understand its significance.

During a recent interview with Kevin Durant’s Boardroom platform, Cam recounted when someone offered him $300,000 for his pink jacket. He would’ve earned a significant profit from the sale. However, the Purple Haze 2 rapper said he wasn’t willing to let it go to that particular individual.

“The people who offered it to me, I didn’t feel they deserved it,” Cam said. “It was more of a stat to them like, ‘I bought Cam’s jacket.’ It wasn’t really like they appreciated where that jacket came from.”

That isn’t to say Cam isn’t willing to sell the jacket. Given how the jacket has cemented itself in fashion and music history, he wants to ensure that the person who ends up buying it from him has a firm understanding of its value. Cam explained that he’d sell the jacket if someone would appreciate it, whether in their home or on a public display.

“You got rich suburban kids who be like, ‘Hey Cam, my girlfriend really loves your pink jacket. I don’t really know too much about it but I’ll buy it for her. How much do you want for it?’ That type shit,” he continued. “These are booster babies — their parents come from generational money to where they probably don’t know much about Hip Hop at all anyway, but they dealing with people who do.”

Elsewhere in the interview, Cam’ron explained that he only wore it three times due to how much attention it brings. However, many have reached out to him to bring the jacket to fur and hip-hop history exhibits in the past. He said he only wears it if it “makes sense.” For example, he allowed Drake to don the matching hat and jacket combo at the Apollo Theater shows in Harlem.

“So, the fur comes out once in a while if it makes sense,” he added. “But you know, for the Drake show being at the Apollo, I thought it would be cool to bring out.”

Doja Cat Says Comparing Shaved Head To Britney Spears Is “Disrespectful”

After turning heads at Paris Fashion Week, Doja Cat is back to address a few controversies with Variety. The Hot Pink star is known for her hits as well as her viral moments online. While she’s stormed the charts—most recently with her Elvis smash “Vegas”—Doja has also found her quirky personality criticized by social media users. As we have witnessed over the years, the rapper’s style can change from one day to the next. The internet lit up when she shaved her head, and a similar reaction exploded when she rid herself of eyebrows.

Quickly, people compared the new buzzcut to Britney Spears. The Pop icon infamously shaved her head after a heated run-in with the paparazzi back in 2007. The public fired off claims that Doja was having some sort of breakdown moment, but it’s an assertion that disturbs her.

The comparison rubs Doja the wrong way—more for how it continues to paint Spears negatively. “It’s so incredibly disrespectful for people to be minimizing what Britney went through,” the singer told Variety. “And make a joke out of something that was very serious and a big deal in her life. Every time I see a comment like that, I can’t compute what’s happening, other than it’s just an awful thing.”

Doja further detailed why she decided to switch things up and rid herself of her hair altogether. “But other than that, when I shaved my eyebrows off and I shaved my head, I remember thinking, ‘Get this sh* t off of me,’ because I needed to change something,” she said. “I wasn’t working out and wasn’t really taking care of myself in the way that I wanted to. I was like, ‘I need to do something,’ so I just chopped it all off. And I could see the shape of my head. I could see my whole face. I can see my ears, now that I don’t have a wig that’s glued to my forehead.”

“The Brooklyn Circus and Gap share in the heartbreaking loss of beloved icon Stephen ‘tWitch’ Boss, who was a longtime supporter of the BKc community, [founder and creative director] Ouigi’s work and a core part of this campaign thanks to his personal friendship with Ouigi Theodore,” a press release for the campaign reads.

Allison Holker Boss, the late dancer and choreographer’s wife, shared a sentimental statement as well that read, “When Stephen and I first saw his images from the campaign, it brought tears to our eyes. He was so moved by how they captured his true essence, and he was excited for the world to see them. We pay tribute to Stephen’s life by sharing these images in homage to the joy and light he brought to everyone around him.”

He and Holker celebrated their ninth wedding anniversary just days before his death. They have three children together: Weslie, 14, Maddox, 6, and Zaia, 3.
