Today in Hip-Hop History: Snoop Dogg’s Third Solo LP ‘Da Game Is To Be Sold, Not To Be Told’ Turns 25 Years Old!

On this day in Hip Hop history, Snoop Dogg released his third LP Da Game Is To Be Sold, Not To Be Told, his first release on No Limit Records. Although met with mixed reviews from critics, this #1 album may very well be the most important project of Snoop’s career.

Following the release of his sophomore LP Tha Doggfather, Snoop’s relationship with Death Row Records began to deteriorate. The aftermath of Dr. Dre leaving the label brought the worst out of its co-founder Suge Knight causing his iron dictatorship business model to only tighten its grip. Snoop’s disapproval of Death Row owning and profiting off of everything that he had recorded since signing along with receiving luxurious gifts in lieu of royalties led to his refusal to write another bar for Knight until his contract was up, excluding of course the infamous “F*ck Death Row.” A year later, Snoop finally decided to call it quits and take his talents down south.

Snoop signed with P. Miller in 1998 and officially became a part of the hottest rap syndicate of the time, No Limit Records. The No Limit army had begun to monopolize the rap game in 1997 with the release of Master P’s Ghetto D which peaked at #1 on the Billboard 200 and set what would be the labels most successful year. Much like the 2010 signing of LeBron James to the Miami Heat, Snoop Dogg’s joining No Limit brought with it nothing but success and took the label to the top of the rap game.

The anticipation of a Snoop Dogg album without Death Row brought about so much hype that the album debuted at #1 on the Billboard 200 and sold 520,000 copies in its first week. Critics had a lot to say about this album as it received mixed reviews across a plethora of publications. With the majority of critics citing the change in style and production of this project to fit the No Limit uniform, many praised the transition Snoop was making from a strictly West Coast G-Funk artist to one that could appeal to a wider range of Hip Hop fans. Snoop’s talent mixed with Master P’s marketing genius brought this tape to make chart appearances in ten countries across the globe and sell 3,985,360 copies in the United States alone.

With this album, Snoop proved that he was more than just another West Coast gangsta rapper. Although his album sales of previous albums were enough to set him apart from his local competition, never before had a West Coast artist been able to step outside of California and retain and gain the respect that Snoop did. His ability to thrive in the dirty south during an era of Hip Hop where factions and tension based on geography were at an all-time high showed that his talent was above the petty beef and could shine on any front.

Cardi B Will Not Face Charges in Las Vegas Mic-Throwing Incident

Cardi B on Mic Throwing Incident: 'I Said Splash my P****, No My Face'

Cardi B will not face charges over a microphone-throwing incident last weekend at a performance in Las Vegas.

Speaking with Cardi’s legal team of Drew Findling, David Chesnoff and Richard Schonfeld, TMZ reports, “This afternoon we were notified by the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Dept., that as a result of their investigation, there will be NO charges against Cardi. On behalf of Cardi, we appreciate the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Dept’s diligent and prompt resolution of this matter.”

The microphone Cardi B threw into a concert crowd in Las Vegas is now up for sale on eBay.

A production company owns the mic called The Wave, and was leased out to Drai’s Nightclub for the event. The owner, Scott Fisher, of The Wave, tells TMZ the microphone is being auctioned off to benefit charities.

Fisher stated the mic is still working and can be purchased here. Maybe Drake will buy it. The starting bid is $500; the current bid price is $50,800.

In case you missed it, Cardi B rocketed her microphone at a fan who threw a drink at her, splashing her in the face. According to Variety, the fan reported with the Las Vegas Metro Police Department on Sunday (July 30).

“On July 30, 2023, an individual came into an LVMPD police station to report a battery,” the LVMPD statement reads. “According to the victim, she was attending an event on July 29, 2023, at a property located in the 3500 block of Las Vegas Boulevard. During a concert, she was struck by an item that was thrown from the stage.”

In a new clip, Cardi says, “I said splash my pussy, not my face bitch.” It was the departing message for Cardi’s set.

That wasn’t the only time Cardi threw a mic. The night before, the DJ at her Drai’s show caught a mic too. There aren’t any details why she tossed the mic in that incident.

Common at Summerfest 2016

Common is featured in Men’s Health Hip-Hop 50 celebration, highlighting the impact of Nas when reflecting on his own single “Respect for Life.”

Speaking with writer Keith Nelson, Common revealed a fan once said the single helped in his decision to have his kid. Common revealed the song came from a life experience but stated that it was the same personal energy, the ability to connect fans through music, Nas captured through Illmatic.

“He experienced it, and the way he told it was just beautiful. In ‘One Love,’ he talks to his boy in prison,” Common said. “That’s one of the greatest songs ever written. Recently, there was a dude at the play I did called Between Riverside and Crazy who was in a wheelchair. His mother was talking to me, and she said, “He’s so happy to meet you. He loves you, loved the play, and really loves your music.” A friend of his was dying, and he told him to listen to my music. That hit me in a different way because he told him to listen to it because it would give him some hope.”

Eminem Disses Melle Mel on “Juice Head” Feature Verse, Suggests Legend is on Steroids

Eminem

Eminem delivers a new verse on Ez Mil’s new release, “Realest.” Through his bars, Shady seemingly addresses Melle Mel, who once stated Em only got his Top Five rap status because he is white.

In an interview, Melle Mel criticized Billboard’s Top 50 Rappers of All Time list, not because of his no. 48 ranking, but of Eminem’s no. 5 ranking, saying that Eminem is ranked so high because he’s white.

“Obviously, he’s a capable rapper. If you was talking about sales, he’s sold more than everybody. If you were talking about rhyme style, okay, he got a rhyme style. But he’s white. He’s white!” Melle Mel said of the 8 Mile rapper.

“So now, if Eminem was another nigga like all the rest of us, would he be Top 5 on that list when a nigga that could rhyme just as good as him is 35? That had records and all that? He’s 35. He’s white.”

He said, “And anybody could be as mad … They could feel how they wanna feel. If you don’t think that race plays a part in the equation of how great he is — I heard one of the dudes that’s down with him, Royce Da 6’9″ [mislabelling Royce Da 5’9″] or one of those – I heard he’s just as good as Eminem. Why he ain’t as big as Eminem? Because he’s Black! Ain’t none of that shit hard to figure out. Eminem gets a top spot because he’s white.”

Em heard the words and offered a response:

“Hip Hop has been good to me, huh
When they say I’m only Top 5 ’cause I’m white, why would I be stunned?
My skin’s color still working against me
Cause second, I should be, to none
Bein’ white being why they put me at five
That’s why they can’t put me at one”

Em would add that he isn’t played in clubs and while he is a guest in rap, he “turned this bitch into a mansion.” That was followed with a direct message to Melle Mel:

“Shoutout to Furious Five and Grandmaster Flash, but boy
There’s someone who really is furious
Stay out his path, his wrath avoid
I’ll be the last to toy with a juice head whose brain is half destroyed, like a meteor hit it
Now with Melle Mel, he lost his ass to ‘roids.”
