Doja Cat Had Spotify’s Most Popular Rap Song Of 2023

Doja Cat’s “Paint The Town Red” finished 2023 as Spotify’s most-streamed rap song for the year. According to Chart Data, the single has earned over 730 million streams on the platform since its August release. Doja dropped it as the lead single from her fourth studio album, Scarlet.

In addition to its success on Spotify, “Paint The Town Red” also became Doja Cat’s second single to top the Billboard Hot 100. It was her first as a solo artist. It is nominated for Best Pop Solo Performance at the 66th Annual Grammy Awards.

Despite the song’s popularity, Doja recently admitted that she wasn’t a fan of “Paint The Town Red” initially. Speaking with Ebro Darden for Apple Music in December, she explained: “I thought ‘Paint The Town Red’ reminded me of like, Target or like Macy’s. It reminded me of like, GAP. I don’t why. It just kind of is that. And I know it starts with a curse word and it’s like a little bit edgy in that sense and I say, ‘I’m a demon, Lord!’ Like yeah, I get that, but that song just had a very pants-up-high vibe. And you know I think strategically because I can be strategic. I think it was a good addition to the album and a strong addition to the album. I know that it’s a strong song. And I did [expect it to be as popular as it is] and I was kind of running that from a little bit. I didn’t really want to have that pants-up-high song, the goofy, kind of palatable…”

Doja Cat’s “Paint The Town Red” Finishes As Most-Streamed Rap Song Of 2023

While Doja had the most popular rap song of 2023 on Spotify, she didn’t have the most popular rap album. That honor went to Metro Boomin and his project, Heroes & Villians. Be on the lookout for further updates on Doja Cat on HotNewHipHop.

Doja Cat Originally Wasn’t A Fan Of “Paint The Town Red”: “It Reminded Me Of Like, GAP”

Doja Cat says she originally wasn’t a fan of her song, “Paint The Town Red,” and that it reminded her of something that would play in a grocery store. She discussed the evolution of the track during an interview with Ebro Darden for Apple Music on Thursday.

“I thought ‘Paint The Town Red’ reminded me of like, Target or like Macy’s. It reminded me of like, GAP,” she admitted during the conversation. “I don’t why. It just kind of is that. And I know it starts with a curse word and it’s like a little bit edgy in that sense and I say, ‘I’m a demon, Lord!’ Like yeah, I get that, but that song just had a very pants-up-high vibe. She continued: “I wanted to make a little bit of a darker, slower album but I don’t think this was the time for that. I think keeping it on the album was a smart move because I want to slowly trickle into sort of moodier vibes creatively. Like, I’m not gonna be doing that forever.” Despite her lack of confidence in the song, it debuted atop the Billboard Hot 100 and spent three straight weeks at No. 1. Dionne Warwick Says Doja Cat Never Reached Out For Sample As She Makes It Clap In Bathrobe

As one of the biggest and most acclaimed hits of the year, it was very hard to avoid Doja Cat’s “Paint The Town Red” in 2023. However, it seems like the song’s point of inspiration never even heard about what the song wanted to do before it actually came out. Moreover, Dionne Warwick recently appeared on The Kelly Clarkson Show and spoke about how the rapper and singer sampled her hit “Walk On By” in the chart-topper. At one point, she recalled not even knowing that Doja wanted to record that song, at which point Clarkson brought up that they probably had to ask permission to clear the sample.

Then, Warwick said that she didn’t hear anything about clearing the sample, but still showed love to the song and thanked Doja Cat for introducing her work to a whole new generation. As such, it seems like there are no hard feelings here about this song becoming so huge, even if the 82-year-old was a bit out of the loop. Of course, it’s entirely possible that this sample clearance occurred between each artist’s teams and not between them personally. We might never know for sure, but the important thing is that this is an amicable relationship.

Dionne Warwick On “Paint The Town Red” Sample: Watch

Funnily enough, given that she’s such a legend in music, it’s no surprise that this wasn’t Dionne Warwick’s first hip-hop crossover. Her other famous one is much different, though, as it involves her reprimanding Snoop Dogg and his crew about their lyrics. “We were kind of, like, scared and shook up,” Tha Doggfather told CNN about her words. “We’re powerful right now, but she’s been powerful forever: thirty-some years in the game, in the big home with a lot of money and success. We were the most gangster as you could be, but that day at Dionne Warwick’s house, I believe we got out-gangstered that day. I made it a point to put out records of joy. Dionne, I hope I became the jewel that you saw when I was the little, dirty rock that was in your house. I hope I’m making you proud.”

Doja Cat Throws It Back In A Bathrobe: Watch

Meanwhile, the Scarlet hitmaker hasn’t commented on this, but she did show how she can make it clap with no hands. It’s been nice to see her having fun online amid a lot of busy movement. While Doja recently apologized for a lackluster concert on tour, hopefully the rest of it picks up with grace and excitement. For more on Dionne Warwick and Doja Cat, log back into HNHH.

Dionne Warwick Shared The Sweet Story About Finding Out Doja Cat Sampled Her On ‘Paint The Town Red’

Dionne Warwick recently paid Kelly Clarkson a visit on her talk show, where the two musicians praised one another. During the discussion, Warwick opened up about how she found out that Doja Cat had sampled her song, “Walk On By,” for the latter’s Scarlet single, “Paint The Town Red.”

As it turns out, Doja didn’t need permission for the sample — so Warwick found out through a sweet story about her granddaughter.

“I didn’t know it had been recorded by her,” she said. “My granddaughter called me and says, ‘Grammy, do you know you’re on a record with Doja Cat?’ I said, ‘Doja who?’”

“Well, apparently, it’s a major hit for her,” Warwick added.

Clarkson then confirmed how much of a hit that Doja’s “Paint The Town Red” is, “Oh no no, it’s huge.”

“I’m thrilled,” Warwick continued. “I hope ‘Walk On By’ is as good for her as it has been for me… They’re great songs, and finally [the kids are] being exposed to some good music.”

Back in 1964, Warwick’s “Walk On By” had reached No. 6 on the Billboard Hot 100. Decades later, Doja Cat earned her first solo No. 1 hit by incorporating it into “Paint The Town Red.”

Doja Cat Brings The Red Lights To BBC Live Lounge

The BBC Radio 1 Live Lounge is an instantly recognizable stage that has played host to most of the biggest artists in all of music. Fresh off a successful new album and a number one hit on the Hot 100, Doja Cat became the newest artist to take the stage. She brought her two current Hot 100 hits with her for the performance. She unpacked “Paint The Town Red” and “Agora Hills” for her performance. Both songs are on the Hot 100 this week at number 2 and 55 respectively. In between, she also delivered a cover of neo soul and jazz band Hiatus Kaiyote’s song “Red Room.”

“Paint The Town Red” has been a particularly impressive single for Doja. After being released back in March the song started to pick up steam last month. That eventually resulted in three non-consecutive weeks spent at number one on the Hot 100 so far. Next week, the song has a chance to challenge Taylor Swift’s “Cruel Summer” to potentially even return to the top spot once again. “Agora Hills” in comparison reached number 18 on the Hot 100 in the week following the release of the album Scarlet, where both songs appear. Check out Doja Cat’s full BBC Radio 1 Live Lounge performance below.

Doja Cat Takes A Misty Red Stage

Doja Cat didn’t quite reached the peak of the Billboard 200 like she did the Hot 100. Regardless, Scarlet had an impressive first week on the charts turning up at number four. It was her second straight album to land in the top 5 on the chart and her third straight album to peak inside the top ten.

Doja Cat recently became the most recent artist to join another iconic institution. That was the Hot Ones stage where she tried some very spicy wings and talked about how she’s addicted to the internet. What do you think of Doja Cat’s BBC 1 Radio Live Lounge performance recording? Here’s Why Doja Cat Changed Her Album Title From ‘Hellmouth’ To ‘Scarlet’

Over the past few months, there are many things “Paint The Town Red” rapper Doja Cat has altered. From her now signature haircut to her countless tattoos (that have sent users online into a frenzy), the Grammy Award winner isn’t afraid to make changes spontaneous changes. However, fans were vocal about their annoyance with Doja’s indecisiveness behind her latest album’s title.

Yesterday (October 12), during her appearance on Hot Ones, she addressed the thought process behind the creative call. So, here’s why Doja Cat changed her album title from Hellmouth to Scarlet.

When asked by host Sean Evans to elaborate on what goes into selecting an album title, Doja replied, “I don’t care about the meaning being so deep, as much as the word being a cool word. I just like good words. I thought Hellmouth was cool… it’s like the gates of hell. But that felt so aggressive to me after a while, and I don’t know if I even like it anymore. I change my mind constantly. And Scarlet felt like the right thing to do.”

She continued, “It’s kind of an ode to Hot Pink. I did the name of a color, but it’s not really; you think of Scarlet as someone’s first name and not as a color. That was kind of the twist to it. And also red is just a passionate shade.”

Scarlet is out now via Kemosabe and RCA Records. Find more information here.

Doja Cat’s “Paint The Town Red” Tops Hot 100 For A Third Week

Last month, Doja Cat’s single “Paint The Town Red” ended a long-running streak on the Hot 100. It had been more than a year since a rap song was sitting atop the charts dating back to Nicki Minaj’s “Super Freaky Girl.” Minaj’s single debuted at the #1 spot before falling back in week two. It took more than 12 months and deep into 2023 for another rap song to occupy the spot. Technically one other rapper has been at the top spot on the charts since then, when Latto appeared there for a verse she gave on the Jung Kook song “Seven.”

Now Doja Cat was fighting for a third week at the top of the charts and once again faced Jung Kook as a challenger. The K-pop superstar dropped a new song with Jack Harlow called “3D” that was expected to make a high debut. The song ended up tapping in at number 5 in its first week on the charts and “Paint The Town Red” held firm at the top spot. The top 3 spots on the chart round out with SZA’s “Snooze” and Taylor Swift’s “Cruel Summer” making it the first time in over 7 months that the top three spots were all occupied by women. Check out the full top 10 below.

Doja Cat Scores A Third Non-Consecutive Week At #1

Doja’s run at the top spot hasn’t come in consecutive weeks. In between her three-week run Drake and SZA debuted their new single “Slime You Out,” at the top spot on the charts. Following the release of Drake’s new album For All The Dogs his collaboration with J. Cole “First Person Shooter” is expected to debut at the top spot next week.

Drake is expected to debut all 23 of the songs on his new album on the Hot 100 next week. That drop could spell the end of some notable Hot 100 runs. In particular, Taylor Swift and Ice Spice’s collaboration “Karma” has the potential to leave the charts. What do you think of Doja Cat scoring another week at the top spot on the Hot 100? Let us know in the comment section below.

Drake & SZA’s “Slime You Out” Falls From First To Outside The Top 10 On The Billboard Charts

Drake is going to be dropping a brand-new album on Friday. For All The Dogs is a project that has been teased for quite some time at this point. However, we don’t actually know much about it. There hasn’t been a tracklist for the project, and we also don’t have a features list. Overall, there is even confusion about whether or not “Search & Rescue” will be on the album. Fans are split as to whether or not they even want it, but we digress.

What is for certain about this album, is that the song “Slime You Out” will definitely be on the tracklist. This song dropped a few weeks ago and it features the likes of SZA. The length 5-minute ballad was an immediate hit among fans, even it got criticized by Charlamagne Tha God. Subsequently, the song ended up becoming the number one track on the Billboard charts. It was a massive achievement, especially with the lack of hip-hop on the charts this year. Unfortunately, the song has experienced a major fall-off.

Drake & SZA Lose Out To Doja Cat

In the latest Billboard update, “Slime You Out” went all the way from first to 12th. Yes, that is correct, the song with Drake and SZA is now outside of the top 10. This is surprising especially when you consider how SZA has dominated the Billboard charts this year. As for who took number one from Drake? Well, it was actually none other than Doja Cat. Her song “Paint The Town Red” is back at number one, and we’re sure she is enjoying the success right now.

With For All The Dogs dropping very soon, it is likely that the artist will have another number one hit on his hands. His albums always chart extremely well, and we imagine every single song will end up on the Top 100 in one form or another. Let us know your thoughts on “Slime You Out,” in the comments section below. Additionally, stay tuned to HNHH for the latest news and updates from around the music world.

Doja Cat Reclaims the Billboard Hot 100 Throne with “Paint the Town Red”

Doja Cat Delivers New Single "Paint The Town Red"

Doja Cat is riding high once again as her chart-topping hit “Paint the Town Red” surges back to the #1 spot on the Billboard Hot 100, marking the first rap song to achieve this feat in 2023. This captivating anthem also continues its reign atop the Billboard Global 200 for the fourth consecutive week, solidifying its global appeal.

In an unprecedented achievement, “Paint the Town Red” has dominated traditional charts and made history on Spotify. The song secured the coveted #1 spot on Spotify’s Top 50 – USA chart, marking the first time in Spotify’s history that a rap song by a solo female artist claimed the top position. Furthermore, it reached #1 on Spotify’s Daily Top Songs Global Chart.

Doja Cat‘s triumph doesn’t stop there. Her fourth studio album, Scarlet, released via Kemosabe Records / RCA Records, has stormed into the Top 5, underscoring her immense influence on the music scene.

Adding to her incredible run, Doja Cat’s latest fan-favorite track, “Agora Hills,” has debuted in the Top 20 on the Billboard Hot 100, boosted by a visually stunning music video shot in Pomona, CA, and Koreatown in Los Angeles, CA. Directed by Hannah Lux Davis (known for her work with Ariana Grande and Nicki Minaj), the video has captivated the internet.

As Doja Cat gears up for her first North American headlining tour, set to commence later this month, it’s clear that her star continues to rise, leaving fans eager for what’s next from this dynamic artist. See the dates here.

Doja Cat Keeps Dominating The Billboard Hot 100 With “Paint The Town Red”

Doja Cat’s Scarlet is still in heavy rotation, it seems, as the new album’s biggest hit single continues to dominate the Billboard Hot 100 chart. Moreover, “Paint The Town Red” bounced back from No. 2 to return to the No. 1 spot on the ranking, beating out artists like Taylor Swift, SZA, and more. In addition, it marks her first multi-week chart-topping song, as her previous No. 1 hit “Say So” with Nicki Minaj held the placement for a single week. Just three weeks earlier, the Los Angeles native’s single became the first hip-hop record to reach the top spot in over a year. The last track to do so was the Queen’s “Super Freaky Girl,” and it’s funny to see all these links pop up with their commercial performances.

Furthermore, this is proving to be a great year for Doja Cat, even despite her relationship with her fans and what her fans think of her rumored relationship. WIth Scarlet, she pretty effectively switched lanes into more straightforward, but nonetheless engaging rap fare. Given that “Paint The Town Red” is a solid fusion of the “Balut” MC’s various styles, it’s no wonder that this was the track to make it big. That being said, don’t let that assessment keep you sleeping on the rest of the tracklist, because there’s a lot of quality to find.

Doja Cat’s “Paint The Town Red”: Watch The Music Video

Other big names on the Billboard Hot 100 for this charting week include Taylor Swift’s “Cruel Summer,” which rose from No. 6 to No. 4. SZA also continues to show that she’s a commercial and critical darling, as “Snooze” occupied the second spot. Funnily enough, this is her third track to get to either No. 1 or 2 (all of which were this year), following “Kill Bill” and “Slime You Out” with Drake. There’s been some steep chart competition in 2023, although admittedly not as much as other years.

Meanwhile, Scarlet itself is also proving itself to be quite successful on the Billboard charts, exceeding initial expectations. With just three months left to go in the year, there’s still time for Doja to etch herself more firmly in the 2023 chart history books. We’ll see how much further along “Paint The Town Red” captivates fans this year. For more news and the latest updates on Doja Cat, stay posted on HNHH.
