DJ Drama The Forever Kid, Calvin Harris On New Money, EarthGang With The Deluxe Album

New Music Friday

After back-to-back weeks of multiple drops, this week is to catch a breather. It may not be as much as we’ve had since last summer, but we still got bangers here. One thing stayed steady: Deluxe albums. This time from EARTHGANG and French Montana. We also have feature drops by Gucci Mane, Tory Lanez, and […]

DJ Drama Seeks Longevity With Fabolous, Benny The Butcher, Jim Jones, And Capella Grey On ‘Forever’

For the past few years, DJ Drama’s work has come through supporting another artist. Most recently, he served as a host on Tyler The Creator’s sixth album Call Me If You Get Lost which was modeled after Drama’s Gangsta Grillz mixtape series. The project went on to win Best Rap Album at the 2022 Grammy Awards, giving Drama his first Grammy. Elsewhere, Drama helped bring the careers of Jack Harlow and Lil Uzi Vert to new heights as both artists are signed to Drama’s Generation Now label which was co-founded with Don Cannon.

Prior to the aforementioned instances, there was a point when DJ Drama was releasing his own albums as the last one, Quality Street Music 2, arrived back in 2016. It appears that Drama might have a new body of work on the way as he returns with “Forever” alongside Fabolous, Benny The Butcher, Jim Jones, and Capella Grey. The records speak about establishing longevity in their careers, and this gets accomplished through verses from Fabolous, Benny, and Jim while Capella took care of the song’s hook.

The record also stands as Drama’s first single as a lead artist since 2019’s “Nasty” with Moneybagg Yo and Pnb Rock.

DJ Drama Defends Jack Harlow And Drake’s Video For ‘Churchill Downs’ After PETA Criticized It

At the beginning of last month, Jack Harlow released his sophomore album Come Home The Kids Miss You which included the Drake-featured track, “Churchill Downs.” Some weeks later, a video for the song was released and it featured both rappers enjoying their time at the 2022 Kentucky Derby which takes place at the racetrack Harlow named the song after. The visual was later criticized by PETA in a statement. “Jack Harlow and Drake have chosen to glamorize horseracing with their new ‘Churchill Downs’ video,” they wrote. PETA also asked the rappers “to donate the song’s proceeds toward caring for Thoroughbreds discarded by the industry.”

Nearly a month after that statement was delivered, DJ Drama, who signed Harlow to his Generation Now label defended the “Churchill Downs” video following a run-in with TMZ. “No horses were harmed in the making of the video for sure,” he said. “They might have to talk to the Kentucky Derby about that. We were just on location. [The] Kentucky Derby been going on for a long time — don’t go after us.”

In more recent news, DJ Drama’s response comes after he appeared alongside Harlow during his performance at the 2022 BET Awards. Harlow performed “Poison” with Lil Wayne and surprised the world by bringing out Brandy for “First Class” to end the set.

Tyler The Creator Explains The Importance Of DJ Drama’s ‘Gangsta Grillz’ Mixtapes For Nardwuar

Whenever Tyler The Creator bumps into Nardwuar, the results are always spectacular. While Nardwuar’s interviews with rappers are often revealing — or at least, exciting — the Canadian radio personality has developed a special rapport with the Los Angeles-based star over the course of several wild interviews. In their last meetup, Tyler talked about his musical growth and Justin Bieber’s armpit hair. This time, though, there are new matters to discuss along with Tyler’s Grammy-winning new album, Call Me If You Get Lost.

Nardwuar presents T with a couple of copies of DJ Drama‘s Gangsta Grillz mixtapes (on CD!) as a reference to the rapper’s new album. CMIYGL, while not bearing the Gangsta Grillz title, is presented as a pseudo entry into the series canon, with Drama providing his usual ad-libs and catchphrases throughout. In turn, Tyler breaks down the importance of the mixtape series, which was most recently expanded by Dreamville’s D-Day.

“Rap music used to be super regional, so back in like 2005/2006, if you came across it, it was because of the internet,” Tyler elaborates. “During that time, it was so much Wayne and Tip… Mixtapes at that time were so important… So many important pieces of music that were put out because of the weird label politics and DJ Drama was the head of one of the most important mixtape series of all time that really helped shape how a lot of people make music — including me.”

Elsewhere in the interview, Tyler gives his take on furry hats, makes Jasper Dolphin do one of his signature on-stage dances, and explains how he stays in shape to perform for two hours at his incredible live shows.

DJ Drama Finds Out He Wins a Grammy Before His Dreamville Set

Tyler, the Creator’s Call Me If You Get Lost won Best Rap Album at the 2022 Grammy Awards. The album featured DJ Drama throughout, as it served as an official Gangsta Grillz release. Drama wasn’t in Las Vegas for the ceremony, instead, he was in North Carolina for his Gangsta Grillz set, which featured Lil Wayne, Jeezy, and T.I. Before taking the stage, Drama sat with Wayno, Gia Peppers, and Rob Markman as a part of Rotation’s live stream of The 2022 Dreamville Festival and they broke the news to him.
