Today In Hip Hop History: Notorious B.I.G.’s Debut LP ‘Ready To Die’ Dropped 29 Years Ago

Screen Shot at

On September 13, 1994, Notorious B.I.G., alongside producers Easy Mo Bee, DJ Premier, Poke of the Trackmasters, and none other than “Puffy” (as Diddy was called then) as the executive producer, released the Hip Hop masterpiece known as Ready To Die.

As Big’s debut album, this highly anticipated release shows the lyrical prowess of the Bed-Stuy big man, and besides Method Man’s assistance on the epic “The What?” track, Mr. Wallace made it happen all by himself. Other than Nas’ Illmatic, no other solo emcee accomplished that feat during that era on the East Coast. Recognized as “The King Of New York” and as seen on a vintage 1995 Source Magazine cover, Big’s legacy was etched in stone with this LP.

Timeless classics from that four and a half mic-er include the DJ Premier produced “Unbelievable,” the back and forth storytelling adventures of “Warning” and “Gimme The Loot,” and the eerie title track itself were just a few of the highlights of this legendary project. That’s not to forget the mainstream success of singles such as “One More Chance,” the Brooklynplayalistic sound of “Big Poppa,” and of course the hood inspirational, Mtume-based “Juicy.”

We only had the chance to get one more album(prophetically named Life After Death) out of one of the game’s greatest lyricists before he was prematurely killed in Los Angeles in 1997. Still, this album will always remind us that B.I.G. was “Ready to Die” because his talent was and will always be larger than life.

Salute to Big (RIP), Premier, Easy, Poke, Lord Finesse, Diddy, Lil’ Kim, and the entire Wallace family for this classic masterpiece!

WATCH: Diddy Performs and Honored with Global Icon Award at 2023 MTV VMAs

Diddy Performs and Honored with Global Icon Award at VMAs

Diddy received the Global Icon award at the 2023 MTV Video Music Awards. Following a riveting performance, his children joined Diddy on stage, and Mary J. Blige presented the award.

“Love wins y’all, love wins,” Diddy said. “I appreciate y’all coming, giving me my flowers and celebrating me. Of course, I got to thank God; that’s my secret weapon. Doesn’t matter what religion you are, just know there is a higher power of love. This is a dream come true.”

For the performance, Diddy covered his career with singles like “I’ll Be Missing You,” “Bad Boys For Life,” “I Need a Girl,” and had a couple of friends join him in his Shorty Wop Yung Miami for “Gotta Move On (Queens Remix)” and Keyshia Cole for “Last Night.”

You can see Puff and his updated shiny red suit below.

Diddy Teases The Weeknd’s Last Feature With Exciting New Trailer

Diddy is one lucky man. You might be asking yourself, “Why?” To give you some context, the hip-hop icon that needs no introduction is dropping his brand new project, The Love Album: Off The Grid, on September 15. While that alone is exciting news for hip-hop heads across the world, there is another bit of information that has a lot of fans buzzing. Back in early August, The Weeknd announced at one of his shows during his Til Dawn After Hours tour that he is not going to be doing any more features.

The one caveat that might bring him back to doing one would be if Daft Punk reunites. That pairing split up on February 22, 2021. But, Abel has agreed to make one more stop before closing this chapter in his legendary career. Diddy’s album is gaining hype because it is him, but also because the Canadian singer is laying down his last guest vocals on it. “Another One Of Me” is the lead single to his eighth studio album that will have a whole host of features on it, but probably none bigger than The Weeknd.

With the LP just days away from being out on streaming, Diddy has just teased this collab once again. He previously shared a clip on Twitter of some of Abel’s vocals, which sounded incredible. Here, though, he shares a sneak peek at the music video for the song. Theneighborhoodtalk shared it to their Instagram and the trailer looks amazing. Cool visuals of 21 Savage, French Montana, and The Weeknd show them shape-shifting from VFX. Then, Diddy looks to be sampling Phil Collins’ iconic track, “In The Air Tonight,” for this song. It is shaping up to be a grand finale for The Weeknd’s last guest verse.

What are your initial thoughts on this brand-new trailer for Diddy’s lead single “Another One Of Me” with The Weeknd, French Montana, and 21 Savage? Do you think this song will be a banger? Are you excited for The Weeknd’s new journey as an artist? Will Diddy’s new album be a contender for the best project of the year? We want to hear what you have to say about all of this. Features

As you can see above, the features are plentiful. There is only one song without a featured artist, which would be notable for any album but especially for a project of this length.

Diddy has teased some featured artists more than others. On August 30, Diddy confirmed that “Another One Of Me” will be The Weeknd’s final collaboration of his career. For weeks, Diddy has teased clips of Justin Bieber in the studio, promising that “R&Bieber is back” and explaining why “Moments” is a full-circle moment for them.

See Diddy’s similarly sentimental posts about Mary J. Blige, Teyana Taylor, The Dream, and others below.

Artwork

Diddy has not explicitly confirmed the album’s cover art. He’s posted loads of red-themed imagery, but one image of a diminutive Diddy in a red grid is the presumed cover.

Singles

Diddy has not released any singles, as of the time of this writing. Instead, he has gone all-in on teasing tracks with the behind-the-scenes videos, as we’ve already covered above.

Tour

A tour in support of The Love Album: Off The Grid has not yet been announced, as of the time of this writing. However, the 2023 VMAs on Tuesday (September 12) could serve as an ideal platform to reveal a single, tour plans, or both.

Some artists covered here are Warner Music artists. Uproxx is an independent subsidiary of Warner Music Group.

Judge Denies Diageo’s Motion To Dismiss Diddy’s Discrimination Lawsuit

diddy

Back in July Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs filed a lawsuit against Diageo Beverages accusing them of discriminating against his liquor brands Ciroc and DeLeon. The mogul accused them of using discriminatory practices when marketing his liquor brands. This week a judge denied Diageo’s motion to dismiss the case.

The Spirit Business reports:

The Supreme Court of New York has denied Diageo’s motion to dismiss the lawsuit brought forward by rapper Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs over alleged racial discrimination.

The ruling, made by judge Joel M Cohen on 7 September, will allow Combs to engage in ‘broad discovery’ aimed at uncovering evidence that the company didn’t support Combs’ liquor brands – Ciroc Vodka and DeLéon Tequila – in the same manner that it supports its other brands, according to John Hueston, Combs’ attorney.

Combs Wine and Spirits has accused Diageo of “cloaking itself in the language of diversity and equality”, and claims that the company had “proven unwilling to treat its Black partners equally – even when explicitly required by contract to do so”.

Hueston said: “This case has always been about getting fair and equal treatment. Today’s decision is an important step in the right direction. Diageo tried to end this action. Today the judge soundly rejected that effort.”

In June, Diageo severed ties with the rapper, with whom it has had a partnership with for 15 years, and filed a response in relation to the lawsuit brought forward by Combs Wines and Spirits the previous month.

The firm said Combs’ accusations were false and defamatory, and were made to extract money from Diageo.

However, according to Hueston, the judge rejected this argument and found that Combs had made appropriate claims concerning issues that needed to be addressed by way of injunctive relief.

Diageo said in a statement: “While we are disappointed with today’s procedural decision, it is important to underscore that this is not a ruling on the merits of the claims, which we maintain are false and baseless. We are currently considering all legal options.”

Diddy Is Continuing With His Lawsuit Against A Liquor Brand, Diageo, After A Judge’s Recent Ruling

Sean “Diddy” Combs is continuing with his lawsuit against the liquor brand Diageo after a judge ruled earlier this week to reject the company’s request to dismiss and/or make it a private matter, according to Billboard.

According to Rolling Stone, Diddy’s lawsuit will now be held in New York and is going to be open to the public.

“I’m fighting for fair and equal treatment for everyone,” he shared in a statement to the publication. “This isn’t just about me. I look forward to continuing this fight in court. We all deserve the same 24 hours.”

Meanwhile, Diageo has pushed back against the judge’s decision.

“It is important to underscore that this is not a ruling on the merits of the claims, which we maintain are false and baseless,” the company’s spokesperson said to Billboard. “We are currently considering all legal options.”

Diddy first filed a lawsuit against Diageo in May, claiming “discriminatory treatment” and that they failed to invest in Ciroc and DeLeón — as it was allegedly only being marketed to “urban” brands.

He also alleged that Diageo’s Stephen Rust, the President of Reserve and New Business, told him that “race was part of the reason Diageo limited the neighborhoods where the Combs brand were distributed.” The company has continued to deny all claims.

Diddy To Receive The Global Icon Award At 2023 VMA’s

Diddy Partners with DJ Khaled to Announce New 'Diddy Direct' Platform

This week Bad Boys Records CEO Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs made headlines after giving his former artists ownership of their masters. Revolt announced that he founder of Bad Boy Records decided to reassign the label’s publishing rights to the artists and songwriters who helped make the company the powerhouse it is today.

They noted companies have reached out to the founder, offering him 100s of millions of dollars, to purchase Bad Boy Records’ publishing. However, instead of accepting these proposals, he’s decided to reassign them to their respective artists. Bad Boy stars such as Faith Evans, Ma$e, The LOX, 112, as well as Biggie’s estate, and more are among the artists and writers who now own their publishing from the label.

Now Diddy is set to release his first solo full-length release in 13 years, “The Love Album: Off the Grid,” and receive the Global Icon Award at the Video Music Awards on MTV.

People reports:

On Tuesday, MTV announced that the hip-hop star and industry mogul will be honored with the global icon award at the 2023 Video Music Awards, airing live from the Prudential Center in New Jersey on Sept. 12 at 8 p.m. ET.

Diddy’s Appearance At The 2023 MTV VMAs Will Include A Special Award And Performance

Many of the year’s biggest award shows unfold in the spring and summer months. Still, just before fall comes, the MTV Video Music Awards are slated on the schedule. The 2023 ceremony is set to take place on September 12. Both Lil Wayne and Doja Cat have already been named as performers. They each just shared their “Kat Food” and “Demons” singles respectively, but we’re curious to see what songs they’ll bring to the stage later this month. In addition to that, Diddy was also confirmed as an act who will be taking the stage next week.

“IT’S OFFICIAL, the hip-hop legend @Diddy is your 2023 #VMA Global Icon Award Recipient!!!” the award show’s official Twitter account announced on Tuesday (September 5) morning. Along with that big news, they confirmed that the New York native will be putting on a rousing performance either before or after he’s given his flowers. “Tune in to @MTV on September 12 to see him accept the award AND perform,” their message concluded.

Diddy is Set to Receive His Flowers at the 2023 MTV VMAs

The latest tracks we’ve heard from Diddy have been two collaborations. There’s “Mandem” with Giggs, as well as “Act Bad” in tandem with the City Girls and Fabolous. It’s possible that either of those could be his performance piece of choice for the VMAs. We’re placing our bets on the latter as it was declared the Song of the Summer by some music lovers. Seeing as he’s confirmed to have new heat on the way soon, it’s possible that Sean Combs could use his big televised moment to debut something totally new too.

Just days after he makes his presence felt at the 2023 MTV VMAs, Diddy is expected to release his latest LP, The Love Album: Off the Grid. At the end of August, the Bad Boy confirmed a star-studded tracklist. It includes guest appearances from The Weeknd, Summer Walker, and many more. Read all about that at the link below, and check back later for more music/pop culture news updates.
