Drake Announces PARTYNEXTDOOR Collab Album And Teases Fall Release

Drake is staying busy. It’s been days since Ebro and Peter Rosenberg teased the possibility of a new Drake album coming soon. The Hot 97 hosts claimed the 6 God was working with Conductor Williams in the studio. Based on his recent announcement, though, Drake has been doing a lot more than that. The rapper made a surprise appearance at a PARTYNEXTDOOR show on Friday, and proceeded to blow the minds of OVO fans. He confirmed that he has a joint album with PND in the works, and it will be dropping in the fall.

Drake came out and crushed the building with his song selections. He treated PARTYNEXTDOOR fans to live performances of “Sweeterman” and “Redemption.” He even played “Wah Gwan Delilah,” the bizarre Plain White T’s cover he dropped a few months back. Fans thought they were being treated to a surprise Drake and PND reunion, but Drake saved the best for last. Towards the end of his set, he told the crowd that him and PARTY have something in the works for the fall. “Once Summer over with,” he stated. “Do what you need to do, I know all you girls are outside and when it gets a little chilly… a PARTYNEXTDOOR and Drake album will be right there for you…” The resulting screams from fans are deafening.

Drake Claims Him And PND Have Been Recording

Drake and PARTYNEXTDOOR have been making great music together since 2013. That was the year the former signed the latter to OVO, and when the latter dropped his self-titled debut. PARTYNEXTDOOR is very much a secret weapon for Drake when it comes to the R&B side of his persona. The two have linked up on classics like “Come and See Me” (2016), “Since Way Back” (2017) and “LOYAL” (2019). PND also stole the show with a pair of standout appearances on Drake’s iconic If You’re Reading This It’s Too Late (2015).

The concept of a Drake and PARTYNEXTDOOR collab album makes perfect sense on paper. The two artists have complimentary sounds. Some would argue that PND has played a big role in shaping the 6 God’s sound. PARTYNEXTDOOR’s writing talents have been praised ad nauseam, but his production on Drake’s “Legend” suggests he can also excel with a harder, hip-hop sound. The possibilities are endless for what the finished product will sound like. We just hope it’s a smoother rollout than Kanye West and Ty Dolla Sign’s VULTURES 2. The pairing of rapper and R&B singer has yielded mostly drama. They did drop a new single, though, which you can check out below.

Denzel Curry Wants To Make An Album With JID For One Specific Reason

Denzel Curry has no misses. It’s the common consensus among fans, and a quick skim through his catalog proves it to be pretty accurate. He’s one of the most talented rappers working. That being said, part of what makes Curry such a force on the mic is his desire to improve. He never wants to make the same song or album twice. He reflected on this artistic goal during a recent appearance on Apple Music. The rapper not only revealed who would want to collab with, but the specific reason why.

Denzel Curry did not hesitate, either. When the Beats 1 host asked which rapper he’d like to record a joint album with, he said “JID.” The Florida spitter then elaborated on his answer by stating that JID is the only rapper he would consider joining forces with. The reasoning was similarly direct. In Curry’s estimation, he will get better having to record alongside JID. “He’ll make me a better rapper, he explained. “I always look for somebody to challenge [me]. To make me a better emcee at the end of the day.” Denzel Curry took a more broad approach with regards to the rest of his answer.

Denzel Curry And JID Collaborated Back In 2018

He likened rap to a sport, and acknowledged that part of the fun is in testing one’s skills against other rappers who are gifted. He even made reference to the recent Drake vs. Kendrick Lamar battle. “You’ve seen Drake and Kendrick go at it,” Denzel Curry noted. “Obviously, you’d have to be up to par. You gotta understand at the end of the day.” He then likened rapping with others to sharpening one’s sword with another. “Steel sharpens steel,” Curry added. “It’s like a sword sharpens the other sword. That’s how I feel when it comes down to other rappers… they make me a better emcee.”

This isn’t the first time Denzel Curry has heaped praise on JID. During a 2022 interview with Zane Lowe, the former claimed that JID inspired him to start writing his lyrics down. This occurred after JID featured on Curry’s song “Sirens_Z1RENS.” “He’s the only person in this game that got me to write,” the rapper admitted. “His verse was so hard on that sh*t, I was like, ‘I’m going back in.’ He’s a lyricist.” 2024 has been dominated by rap beef, so the notion of a friendly competition on record sounds pretty ideal. Hopefully it happens.

Black Thought Explains Why His J Cole Collab Album Never Happened

Black Thought is as respected as a rapper can get. The frontman of The Roots is regularly cited as one of the dynamic lyricists of all time, so anybody who plans to keep up with him better be nice. J Cole thought he was up to the challenge. Black Thought recently appeared on This Week In White Supremacy Podcast (bold name, we know) to reveal that Cole approached him about doing a collab album. The rapper admits he considered the idea. Ultimately, though, the collab album never came together.

Black Thought was asked about the Drake vs. Kendrick Lamar battle that’s taken the music world by storm. What rapper hasn’t been, right? The host pointed out that nobody has ever dared beef with Black Thought, and the rapper confirmed this theory. He was then asked about J. Cole’s decision to apologize to K. Dot following the release of his diss. He didn’t pick team Drake or Lamar, but he commended Cole for his actions. He described the apology as “beautiful,” and felt like it showed “humility and nobility” on J. Cole’s part. “When the plane’s going down,” he asserted. “You gotta situation your own oxygen mask first.”

Black Thought Thinks He “Scared” J. Cole Off

Black Thought’s high opinion on Cole led to him dropping a bombshell about their previous encounter. He told the host that the Dreamville rapper approached him for a full-length project a few years back. Thought was into the idea. “He and I had talked about doing music together,” The Roots rapper noted. “Beginning of 2018, he hit me like, ‘Yo, let’s do an album.’ I told him to send me some music. It was like let me see what you’re thinking.” Black Thought ultimately felt like Cole wanted to make something that was identical to what he was already doing with The Roots.

“He sent me a batch of beats and they all just felt so close to something Roots-centric,” Thought noted. “At the time, I was trying to sort of step outside of what I’d done in The Roots and I just didn’t feel like we were lining up.” Thought theorizes that he scared Cole off when he messaged him back and asked for a different batch of instrumentals. “I think I scared him off,” he explained. “Maybe like some of the trigger words I was using, ‘I want something hard.’” Thought and J. Cole have yet to officially collaborate, but hopefully they get lined up at some point in the future.

Nas & DJ Premier Excite Fans With Another Possible Collab Album Tease

Arguably the greatest hip-hop album of all time, NasIllmatic, turns 30 years old tomorrow (Friday, April 19), and to start celebrating the occasion, it seems like the Queens legend is reminiscing on the moment with one of the people that helped make the album the golden standard that it is for rap music. Moreover, he shared an Instagram post on Wednesday (April 17) that featured a photo with DJ Premier in the ’90s, and a picture of them right now. “Then v.s Now. What if…” the “One Time 4 Your Mind” MC captioned the post, and those last two words really got fans thinking that their mythical collab album might still arrive.

Furthermore, for those unaware, a team-up for a full LP’s been on the cards for Esco and Preemo since at least 2007, if going off of recorded history. A Scratch interview saw them mention it, but nothing else has manifested since then other than occasional teases and promises that it will (or could) still happen. However, the most recent tease about this DJ Premier joint project came on Nas’ “30” off of his King’s Disease III album, which was ironically a collaborative effort with another producer, Hit-Boy. “Superhero material, rap star status / Premier album still might happen,” he spits on the song.

Nas Hints At DJ Premier Collab Album, Fans Think

Going back to Illmatic, which contains some of DJ Premier’s most legendary beats for Nas, the latter recently reflected on this time of his life in a recent IG post. “Grainy pictures for grainy times,” he captioned about the pictures in the post. “I had a dream I could get my favorite producers to produce on my debut album. I knew exactly what I wanted and how it should be. But I didn’t know anyone except for Paul, so I asked him would he connect me to them all. The cool soul brother that he is helped me line it up.

“On April 19th we smashed s**t,” the 50-year-old continued. “Even tho the album leaked months before the release date we still are apart of music history. Thank you Large Professor (Paul) and Dj Premier who drove into the projects to pick me up a time or two. Qtip , Pete Rock , and my man from The Bridge DJ LES, and my guy AZ who was just coming up himself. And thank you to everyone involved. Friday is the albums 30th. 2 The Listeners- ONE LOVE.” Do you think this collab album is ever coming out? Let us know in the comments and stay posted on HNHH for the latest news and updates on Nas and DJ Premier.

ScHoolboy Q Explains Why ASAP Rocky Collab Album Fell Through

ScHoolboy Q and A$AP Rocky are one of the most beloved unofficial rap duos of the 2010s. As incredibly skilled MCs in both their camps, and with a lot of woozy crossover when it comes to their appeal, they have absolute classics in the vault like “Brand New Guy,” “Electric Body,” and “PMW (All I Really Need).” As such, this is one of the many match-ups that fans have dreamed about over the years when it comes to a collaborative album. But with the TDE MC’s recent appearance on Drink Champs, we not only got confirmation that they wanted this team-up too, but that they just couldn’t make it work at the time.

“You and ASAP Rocky was gonna do an album together?” N.O.R.E. asked ScHoolboy Q on the program. “Yeah, we talked about it,” the BLUE LIPS spitter answered. “But… I mean, we both… like I said, me and him just ghost each other so much, bro. Yeah, yeah, like, you know what I mean? I’ll be looking for him, I can’t find him, he’ll be looking for me. Yeah, he’ll call, I’ll see it, I’ll be like, ‘Bruh, I’ll call you tomorrow.’

I was just at his house looking at the new art he’s making and coming up with. He cold, he cold, he cold.

“You know, he’s always doing clothes, videos, and you know, music,” he concluded. “So he was just letting me see all the art he was working on, pretty much.” “That’s an L couple, creatively,” DJ EFN joked. “Yeah, that’s different, that’s different,” Q laughed. LaRussell, Hit-Boy “Rent Due” Review

LaRussell and Hit-Boy have finally released their collaborative album Rent Due on streaming services, after first dropping the project a few weeks ago on the platform EVEN. The EVEN website allows creators to drop material for their fans ahead of schedule, in exchange for a pay-what-you-want method of listening, similar to BandCamp’s distribution system. Since rappers tend to make very little from the regular streaming avenues, this makes the exchange mutually beneficial for artists and listeners alike.

Rent Due is a 7-track EP that runs 18 minutes in length and features thoughtful lyrics penned by California’s own LaRussell over powerful drum-forward production from Hit-Boy. The project boasts guest features from MALACHI, Big Hit, and JANE HANDCOCK, and delivers a powerful and well-thought-out sound, despite LaRussell’s claim that he and Hit-Boy crafted the album in just 5 hours. Here’s an overview of the freshly released outing, and a review of the material within.

Read More: LaRussell Is In A League Of His Own: Talks Throwing Concerts In His Backyard To Nipsey Hussle’s Influence On “Proud 2 Pay” Movement

The EP Opens Very Strong

Some of the best material on Rent Due is front-loaded into the first few tracks on the EP. The opening track, “Lead Me To The Water” kicks off the project with an appearance from frequent LaRussell collaborator Tietta, who delivers a thoughtful and moving spoken word passage. Tietta’s lyrics reflect on life’s hardships and seek guidance from God as she relishes the blessings she’s received. The song’s airy spaced-out production from Hit-Boy allows LaRussell plenty of room to explore and experiment in his lone verse, which concludes with the lyrics “Can’t tell if I got a job, n****, I be home a lot/ Can’t tell if I really made it, n****, I be wearin Crocs/ I think I’ma end this song with a lesson from my pops/ Be a leader.

These closing bars are particularly poignant as Hit-Boy’s real-life dad, Big Hit, joins LaRussell on “Another One” just a couple of tracks later. Unfortunately, the opportunity fails to tie in thematically with the EP’s general focus, as Big Hit offers very little in the way of traditional wisdom during his guest appearance. “Another One” serves as a vacuous trap banger, with bouncing rubbery bass perfect for blasting out your car’s speakers while rolling through your neighborhood with the windows down, but definitely feels like a pointless inclusion when compared to thoughtful lyrical outings such as “Ethics” and “Real Life.”

LaRussell & Hit-Boy Showcase Their Chemistry

“Real Life” is possibly the best track on the project, with guest vocals from MALACHI and JANE HANDCOCK. On the track, LaRussell offers a deep look into his personal outlook on life and takes listeners through the journey of his early days in Vallejo, California, all the way to his modern mastery of the rap sound. JANE HANDCOCK’s angelic hook vocals elevate the cool, laid-back banger to the next level.

Unfortunately, the final three tracks on Rent Due fail to capture the same magic as the first four, as LaRussell and Hit-Boy collaborate without any additional features. While the pair certainly work well together, it’s impossible to listen to Hit’s inspired production choices without comparing the project to the recent string of collaborative albums the producer made with Nas. If you’re one of the few hip-hop heads who somehow missed Nas and Hit-Boy’s King’s Disease and Magic album trilogies, Rent Due will certainly please your sensibilities. However, through no fault of his own, LaRussell’s pen game simply pales in comparison to Nas, making much of the album feel like a missed opportunity.
