BlueBucksClan & Hit-Boy Bring Some Bouncy West Coast Cuts To “Biggest Out The West”

Hit-Boy is one of the most renowned hip-hop producers of our generation. He is known for his plethora of hit songs with artists like Jay-Z, Travis Scott, Drake, A$AP Rocky, Nicki Minaj, and so many others. However, he does not work with only big-ticket names. Over the past few months, the California beatmaker has been teaming up with LaRussell, his father Big-Hit, Musiq Soulchild, and more.

Over this past weekend, Hit-Boy teamed up with fellow Cali natives the BlueBucksClan for a new album Biggest Out The West. This is now the sixth overall project that the producer has put out in the last year. This one may be the most straightforward of them all, as the rap duo BlueBucks are bringing nothing but West Coast bops. On Biggest Out The West you will find big name features as well.

LaRussell, Hit-Boy “Rent Due” Review

LaRussell and Hit-Boy have finally released their collaborative album Rent Due on streaming services, after first dropping the project a few weeks ago on the platform EVEN. The EVEN website allows creators to drop material for their fans ahead of schedule, in exchange for a pay-what-you-want method of listening, similar to BandCamp’s distribution system. Since rappers tend to make very little from the regular streaming avenues, this makes the exchange mutually beneficial for artists and listeners alike.

Rent Due is a 7-track EP that runs 18 minutes in length and features thoughtful lyrics penned by California’s own LaRussell over powerful drum-forward production from Hit-Boy. The project boasts guest features from MALACHI, Big Hit, and JANE HANDCOCK, and delivers a powerful and well-thought-out sound, despite LaRussell’s claim that he and Hit-Boy crafted the album in just 5 hours. Here’s an overview of the freshly released outing, and a review of the material within.

The EP Opens Very Strong

Some of the best material on Rent Due is front-loaded into the first few tracks on the EP. The opening track, “Lead Me To The Water” kicks off the project with an appearance from frequent LaRussell collaborator Tietta, who delivers a thoughtful and moving spoken word passage. Tietta’s lyrics reflect on life’s hardships and seek guidance from God as she relishes the blessings she’s received. The song’s airy spaced-out production from Hit-Boy allows LaRussell plenty of room to explore and experiment in his lone verse, which concludes with the lyrics “Can’t tell if I got a job, n****, I be home a lot/ Can’t tell if I really made it, n****, I be wearin Crocs/ I think I’ma end this song with a lesson from my pops/ Be a leader.

These closing bars are particularly poignant as Hit-Boy’s real-life dad, Big Hit, joins LaRussell on “Another One” just a couple of tracks later. Unfortunately, the opportunity fails to tie in thematically with the EP’s general focus, as Big Hit offers very little in the way of traditional wisdom during his guest appearance. “Another One” serves as a vacuous trap banger, with bouncing rubbery bass perfect for blasting out your car’s speakers while rolling through your neighborhood with the windows down, but definitely feels like a pointless inclusion when compared to thoughtful lyrical outings such as “Ethics” and “Real Life.”

LaRussell & Hit-Boy Showcase Their Chemistry

“Real Life” is possibly the best track on the project, with guest vocals from MALACHI and JANE HANDCOCK. On the track, LaRussell offers a deep look into his personal outlook on life and takes listeners through the journey of his early days in Vallejo, California, all the way to his modern mastery of the rap sound. JANE HANDCOCK’s angelic hook vocals elevate the cool, laid-back banger to the next level.

Unfortunately, the final three tracks on Rent Due fail to capture the same magic as the first four, as LaRussell and Hit-Boy collaborate without any additional features. While the pair certainly work well together, it’s impossible to listen to Hit’s inspired production choices without comparing the project to the recent string of collaborative albums the producer made with Nas. If you’re one of the few hip-hop heads who somehow missed Nas and Hit-Boy’s King’s Disease and Magic album trilogies, Rent Due will certainly please your sensibilities. However, through no fault of his own, LaRussell’s pen game simply pales in comparison to Nas, making much of the album feel like a missed opportunity.

Hit-Boy & LaRussell Release Their Joint EP “RENT DUE” Early On EVEN

EVEN has been a popular music platform for the past few months now as several artists have taken part in exploring the trend. If you are not familiar with it, it is a website that allows creators to release their material early. They way you can access the content is by paying the amount of money you are comfortable paying. It is broken down in tiers and each one gives you access to different content. Hit-Boy is one of the latest to hop on the bandwagon to get out a new EP.

Just two days ago, Hit-Boy, his father Big Hit, and LaRussell all came together for a single “ANOTHER ONE.” This turned out to be the lead track for Hit-Boy and LaRussell’s team EP RENT DUE. It is a seven-song project with features from Tietta, MALACHI, and JANE HANDCOCK. It does hit streaming until February 26, but Hit-Boy wanted to give it to the fans as soon as possible.

Listen To RENT DUE By Hit-Boy & LaRussell

Another reason why RENT DUE is out a couple of weeks in advance is because Hit-Boy and LaRussell are launching a relief program. It is called Rent Relief, accoording to the press release, and it is aiming to award 15 entrepreneurs and/or creatives $1,000 which will run between February and April. The CEO and Founder of Rent Relief, Mag Rodriguez shares why this partnership is important. “The rent crisis is getting worse in our communities. Hit-Boy Continues Torrent Stretch Of Music With “ANOTHER ONE” Featuring Big Hit & LaRussell

Outside of maybe a small handful of hip-hop producers, there is no one doing it better right now than Hit-Boy. The Grammy-winning beatmaker has dominated the mainstream and likes to dabble with lesser-known artists as well. Hit-Boy, like always, has been all over the place. Over the past year, he has worked with Travis Scott, Benny The Butcher, Nas, and many others.

Another artist he has been close by is actually his father. He goes by Big Hit, and lately, they have been hitting the studio to record tracks and projects. At the tail end of 2023, Big Hit put out his first LP with beats provided by his son. About a week and a half later The Game got involved with the father-son duo for Paisley Dreams.”

Hit-Boy & The Alchemist “THEODORE & ANDRE” Review

Last year, Hit-Boy and The Alchemist teamed up for “Slipping Into Darkness,” a song that saw the two rhyming over the other’s production. Both California producers sounded comfortable, highlighting their underrated skills as lyricists. Since the turn of the decade, Hit-Boy and The Alchemist reached new levels in their careers by releasing prolific full-length collaborations at a high volume. Hit-Boy has worked closely with Nas, Big Sean, Dom Kennedy, The Game, and his father, Big Hit. The Alchemist teamed up with Boldy James, Freddie Gibbs, Armand Hammer, Curren$y, Roc Marciano, and Earl Sweatshirt for stellar collaborations.

Most recently, Hit-Boy and The Alchemist teamed up to produce the entirety of Benny The Butcher’s latest album, Everybody Can’t Go. Known for being skilled beat-makers and collaborators, their lyrical skills should not go unnoticed. Hit-Boy and The Alchemist’s latest 3-song EP, Theodore & Andre, makes sure of that. Their bars are at the center of attention while blending their production styles.

Hit-Boy & The Alchemist Blend Production Styles

On Theodore & Andre, Hit-Boy and The Alchemist expand their chemistry as they rhyme over each other’s production together. This time, there’s a clear-cut intention to create memorable records that build off of a combined sound rather than flexing their lyrical muscle. Hit-Boy’s contemporary soul blends seamlessly with The Alchemist’s vintage loops. The EP’s opening track, “Morrissey” is quintessential Alchemist with its cinematic sample chop and downbeat boom bap. Next, Hit-Boy showcases the versatility of his production, handling the beats on the EP’s other two songs.

“The Main Event” starts as an upbeat trap banger. Hit-Boy raps before transitioning into a traditional drum break over which Alchemist rhymes. The two rapped over distinct beats on “Slipping Into Darkness,” but here, they rhyme over one melody that varies in percussion. The beat switch gives them each their own moment to shine whereas they shine together on the closing track. The Hit-Boy-produced beat on “Don’t Be Gone” is reminiscent of something one might hear on the King’s Disease trilogy. In this song, Hit-Boy and Alchemist rap over a beat that fits both of their styles perfectly. It spotlights not just their synergy as producers, but their lyrical chemistry as well.

Don’t Sleep On Their Lyricism

While they are certainly skilled producers, both Hit-Boy and The Alchemist have shown that they’re equally stellar MCs. Theodore & Andre shows that the two excel at both skill sets and traverse between them quite easily. Hit-Boy’s flow is smooth while Alchemist’s is choppy, which is fitting for their respective styles of production. They find their own pockets, no matter the production similar to how they can cater a particular sound to an artist they’re producing for.

The way Alchemist starts rapping on “Morrissey” makes one wish that he would spit over his beats more often. His bars are sparse as he emphasizes the end of each line. Hit-Boy then comes in at the end with a short yet smoothly executed verse. Throughout Theodore & Andre, both of them flex their lifestyles in their rhymes. The Alchemist raps about outdoing his competitors, making references to his studio and touring life with plenty of food metaphors. Hit-Boy embraces his success, attributing it to his work ethic and divine timing. Their collaborative chemistry really comes together on “Don’t Be Gone,” where they trade celebratory bars over a soulful saxophone loop.

Overall, Theodore & Andre is a lean 3-track EP that displays the chemistry between two artists at the top of their game as rappers and producers. As such a short listen, it is enjoyable for what it is—a quick victory lap. It may not contain their best material ever, but it is something new and exciting for Hit-Boy and The Alchemist. Hopefully, this EP is just the beginning of a fruitful partnership.
