Art Basel is returning to Miami this weekend (December 6-8) with the largest number of new exhibitors in a decade. And while the art fair’s purpose is to show painters, sculptors, and artists’ works, in recent years, it’s also become a major draw for musical events and concerts. A diverse array of musical talents will also descend on the city, with a wide variety of genres and recording artists to hear and see. Here are just a few of the events worth checking out for music lovers at Art Basel Miami 2024.

Chance the Rapper — Writings On The Wall: A Star Line Listening Experience

Chance has been promoting his new album Star Line for some time, releasing both loose tracks from the project and his “Writing Exercise” freestyles as he hosts listening experiences like this. Since art is so intrinsically tied to the themes of the album, he’s hosting a literal gallery where fans can take in both the Windy City MC’s new album and the art that’s inspired him during its recording. The exhibition runs at Wynwood Studios runs from December 3 through 6. You can get tickets and more info here.

Fatboy Slim Live At Hyde Beach

I see you, baby. You can see the Big Beat DJ live at the SLS South Beach on December 6 from day-to-night. He’s taking over the hotel’s poolside venue, Hyde Beach, spinning his classics for fans looking to hang by the water without getting sand everywhere. You can find tickets and more info here.

Helado Negro — Live At ZeyZey

Genre-defying musician Helado Negro is South Florida born and raised, so you could consider his performance at ZeyZey a hometown show of sorts. The performance is in support of his new album Phasor, which came out earlier this year via 4AD. The album’s synthesizer-heavy avant-pop was critically hailed on its release, and if you missed his tour this spring, the show on Wednesday, December 4 will be a second chance to experience it live. You can find more info here.

Kaytranada & Shaboozey — DAR MIAMI 1446 at Maydān

The Moroccan restaurant hosts an immersive dining and art experience for Capitol One cardholders, with curated dinners hosted by artist Hassan Hajjaj and afterparty entertainment provided by Kaytranada and Shaboozey. Anderson .Paak (as DJ Pee-Wee) will also play a set. You can find more info here.

Lil Wayne — Live At E11EVEN

The multilevel downtown nightclub will be hosting performances all week in honor of Art Basel, with a DJ set by Anderson .Paak (as DJ Pee-Wee) on Wednesday the 4th, a headlining performance by 50 Cent on Thursday the 5th, a DJ set by Steve Aoki on Friday the 6th, and Lil Wayne bringing it all home on Saturday the 7th. The club is also hosting a golf tournament at nearby Normany Shores Golf Club and a racy fashion show courtesy of The Black Tape Project. You can mind more info here.

A New Movie Based On Pharrell’s Childhood Will Feature Halle Bailey, Janelle Monáe, Anderson. Paak, And Missy Elliott

Pharrell had one of the year’s most notable movies with Piece By Piece, a biopic animated in the style of Lego. He’s not finished telling his story through film yet: It was just revealed he’s teaming up with Michel Gondry on Golden, a movie set for 2025 that was inspired by his childhood.

The cast is led by Kelvin Harrison Jr. and Halle Bailey. Bailey isn’t the only noteworthy musician in the movie, as the film also features Janelle Monáe, Anderson. Paak, and Missy Elliott. The cast is rounded out by Da’vine Joy Randolph, Brian Tyree Henry, and Quinta Brunson.

Of the movie, Pharrell tells Empire:

Piece By Piece is about my life, whereas Golden is about a neighborhood that I grew up in. This is very different. It’s a musical expedition, set in the summer of 1977 in Virginia Beach, Virginia, with the spirit of the music [of that time]. You know how in Dirty Dancing and Grease, the music was almost a character? That’s what it’s like in this film. It’s a coming-of-age story about self-discovery and pursuing your dreams, but it’s so much more magical than that. It’s a celebration of Black life, Black culture, and most importantly, Black joy.”

The film was originally titled Atlantis, after the housing development where Pharrell grew up. Of the name change, Pharrell explains, “It just speaks to the narrative, the area, the energy and literally everything about [the film, which is] this analysis of what being ‘golden’ is. Children and grown-ups with inner children within them can connect to it and realize that there’s a golden aspect to them too, whether it’s realized or latent.”

Cordae Reveals Incredible Guest Features For “Crossroads” Album

Cordae is not messing around. The rapper has a solid resume thanks to albums like The Lost Boy and From a Bird’s Eye View, but he seems poised for a breakthrough. He’s been dropping some of his best music to date in 2024 in preparation for his upcoming album, Crossroads. The rapper has been hard at work on the album since 2022, which is set to be a direct sequel to From a Bird’s Eye View. It’s been a long wait, but Cordae has finally dropped the tracklist and guest features for Crossroads. And one look proves this thing will be worth the wait.

Crossroads boasts 16 tracks, which will make it his longest album to date. The rapper has hinted at a nostalgic theme running through the album, based on buzz singles like “Summer Drop” and “Saturday Mornings.” Both of these songs are present on the tracklist, and boast stunner guest appearances from Anderson .Paak and Lil Wayne. The latter has heaped praise upon Cordae in the past, and been cited as one of Cordae’s biggest influences. As a result, Weezy will also be featured on the song “Back on the Road.”

Cordae Will Collab With Idols Like Weezy And Ye

Cordae tapped some of his generational peers for Crossroads. Jordan Ward and Ravyn Lenae both appear on the song “Don’t Walk Away,” which is poised to be an R&B stunner given the talent on hand. Joey Badass will also drop by for inevitable bar-fest that will be “Syrup Sandwiches.” The rest of the album, however, will feature rappers that Cordae grew up listening to. In addition to two Weezy guest spots, Crossroads will boast appearances from Juicy J and Kanye West. Juicy J will drop by for “Neva Seen It,” while West is set to rap on “No Bad News.”

Cordae has never worked with Kanye West before. He has, however, praised West several times in the past. Cordae rapped over West’s 2005 classic “Gone” during a viral concert clip in 2021. He also cited the Chicago rapper as his “biggest musical influence” during a 2022 interview with All the Smoke. He’s worked with Juicy J, however, appearing on the veteran emcee’s 2024 album Ravenite Social Club. We can’t wait to hear what Cordae has in mind for these collabs.

Cordae and Anderson .Paak Drop New Single and Video “Summer Drop”

Cordae and Anderson .Paak Drop New Single and Video “Summer Drop”

3x GRAMMY® Award-nominated and Emmy Award-winning rapper Cordae has teamed up once again with 8x GRAMMY® Award-winner Anderson .Paak for the brand-new single, “Summer Drop,” available now via ART@WAR/Atlantic Records. Produced by 2x GRAMMY® Award-winner J. Cole, the track also features an official music video directed by Samba.

“Summer Drop” signals the upcoming release of Cordae’s highly anticipated third album, The Crossroads, set to debut later this year. This new single is the third collaboration between Cordae and Anderson .Paak, following last year’s hit “Two Tens (Feat. Anderson .Paak).” The track continues their successful partnership, blending their unique styles under J. Cole’s expert production.

Cordae And Anderson .Paak Take Us On A Ride In “Summer Drop” Music Video

Cordae and Anderson .Paak don’t get enough credit. Every song these two make together is a heater, and their latest, “Summer Drop,” is proof. We already did a rundown on the song itself, but the duo have dropped a music video to accompany it. Unsurprisingly, it is also great. Cordae and Anderson .Paak tap into the laid back vibe of the J. Cole instrumental by riding around a neighborhood with the windows down. The duo appear to be having a blast, and honestly, the energy is infectious.

Cordae is going for a very particular aesthetic on his upcoming album. “Saturday Mornings,” his last song with Lil Wayne, and “Summer Drop,” both evoke a 90s nostalgia. The way each set up is shot to evoke an old school music video, the switches to grainy black-and-white. Cordae is bringing back the rap music of his youth, but putting his own spin on it. There’s nothing kitschy or annoyingly retro about the “Summer Drop” video. It tips its cap to the summer anthems of the past while still having enough of a modern feel to connect with fans in 2024.

Cordae Evokes His 90s Childhood In New Video

A big part of why the balance works is the on screen chemistry between Cordae and Anderson .Paak. In their body language and their reference points, the duo evoke groups like De La Soul and DJ Jazzy Jeff and the Fresh Prince. Even the title of Cordae’s upcoming album, The Crossroads, evokes Bone Thugs. The rapper is clearly feeling wistful, and it manifests in his lyrics. “I saved up the whole summer, that’s how I got school clothes,” he raps. “I bought some Puma’s and some fake chains, that was fools gold.
“My n**ga, what you know about those hot summers? No air condition.”

Anderson .Paak, as always, balances out Cordae’s reserved delivery. The instantly recognizable singer drops a memorable opening verse about his success, and how his life has changed so much since he was a kid. “I’m in my other drop, from beanies to buckets. A hundred bucks in my Polo socks,” he spits. “Remember when summer dropped, we was at Unclе’s spot. Three n**gas with nothin’ to do but wrestle or slap box.” Honestly, we can’t wait to hear the rest of Cordae’s album.

Cordae & Anderson .Paak Recount Their Childhoods Before Rap Over J. Cole-Produced “Summer Drop”

Cordae is someone who has so much talent, but in that same breath does not have the most consistent full-length projects. Well, he might prove those skeptics wrong when the former YBN crew mate puts out his third studio album, The Crossroads. At the time of writing, the Maryland MC does not have a release date in mind for it, but it is coming very soon. So far, we know for sure of one song that will be on the record, and that is the stupendous “Saturday Mornings” which features Lil Wayne. Now, though, Cordae is bringing out the second sure-fire inclusion, “Summer Drop”.

This cut sees Cordae working with now-frequent collaborator Anderson .Paak, as well as J. Cole. For those hoping for a rapping performance, you are going to be let down some. He plays more of a background role, as he is credited as a producer here. However, that’s not necessarily a disappointment because Cole is one heck of an underrated producer. Him, along with Kelsey Gonzalez, lay down another soulful instrumental with constant rushes of horns and a punchy and glitchy boom bap drum pattern. Both .Paak and Cordae are getting nostalgic and personal on “Summer Drop”, recounting their respective childhoods before raking in the big bucks as rap superstars. Check out the incredible single below.

“Summer Drop” – Cordae & Anderson .Paak

Quotable Lyrics:

I saved up the whole summer, that’s how I got school clothes
I bought some Puma’s and some fake chains, that was fools gold
My n****, what you know about those hot summers? No air condition
My n****s got rare ambition, but pain and paired division (When the summer dropped)
I done lost so many homies, in summers I cherish livin’
Nobody care to listen, they suffer from their decision (When the summer dropped)

Cordae And Anderson .Paak’s Nostalgic ‘Summer Drop’ Recalls Simpler Times

Anderson .Paak and Cordae‘s third J. Cole-produced single, “Summer Drop,” is a nostalgic ode to the year’s warmer months — and the easygoing joys they brought in simpler times. The three rappers previously collaborated on “RNP” from Cordae’s debut album, The Lost Boy, while 2023’s “Two Tens” saw them reunite and tease that they had enough songs for a full EP. However, the release of “Summer Drop” brought something even more exciting with it: The announcement of Cordae’s third album, The Crossroads. While no release date was given, it’s expected to be out this year.

“Summer Drop” constitutes Cordae’s second single from the upcoming album, after he released “Saturday Mornings” in July. That song featured another older rapper, Lil Wayne, with whom he reunited after trading bars on “Sinister” from his second album, From A Bird’s Eye View. The Maryland native also tag-teamed with the late Juice WRLD on “Doomsday” from Lyrical Lemonade’s album, All Is Yellow, which dropped in January of this year. He also appeared in the video for “Doomsday 2” by his hero Eminem from the same album, creating something of a full-circle moment for him after his initial breakout with a freestyle over Eminem’s debut single “My Name Is.”
