Tyler, The Creator Unveils Full Camp Flog Gnaw Lineup: Kendrick Lamar, SZA & More

Well, after four years since its last iteration in 2019, Tyler, The Creator’s Camp Flog Gnaw Carnival is back on November 11 and 12 this year at Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles. Moreover, if you were online just a few hours ago, you know that the festival live-streamed people painting each and every artist on the lineup on a mural. Now, we have the full list of performers, and it’s an eclectic, exciting, and often surprising collection of amazing talent. Of course, the Hawthorne native’s reputation as a creative and curator precedes him, but this was still no less joyous to see unfold. Unfortunately, tickets for it sold out almost immediately, but if you’re looking for one, best of luck to you on your resale cop journey.

Furthermore, let’s talk about this lineup. Camp Flog Gnaw will host the first joint set from The Hillbillies, better known as Kendrick Lamar and Baby Keem. Keeping up with TDE connections, SZA will also perform, as well as Tyler himself, obviously. Other massive names on the lineup include Ice Spice, Kali Uchis, Lil Yachty, Rex Orange County, Dominic Fike, PinkPantheress, and former BROCKHAMPTON mastermind Kevin Abstract. In addition, the festival also brought on Fuerza Regida, the regional Mexican collective that’s making huge waves in the Latin American market, which is the most special and surprising addition here.

Camp Flog Gnaw 2023 Lineup

However, let’s not forget about some Odd Future era mainstays at Camp Flog Gnaw: Syd, Earl Sweatshirt, Mike G, Domo Genesis, and Left Brain. Also, many of Tyler’s past collaborators have a spot on the bill, like Teezo Touchdown, Maxo Kream, Fana Hues, and DAISY WORLD. One of the most exciting placements for hip-hop fans, though, has to be a set from Clipse, as well as other great MCs and rising groups like Maxo (not the Kream variety), redveil, Paris Texas, AG Club, and many more. BADBADNOTGOOD, Ravyn Lenae, WILLOW, Toro Y Moi, Khamari, julie, Liv.e, beabadoobee, and d4vd are among other exciting acts.

Meanwhile, it feels like it was ages ago that the CALL ME IF YOU GET LOST pioneer teased the festival’s return in Keem and Kendrick’s “The Hillbillies” music video. Now, fans can finally start to think about who they want to see, and who’s going to steal the show. Let us know who you are most excited to see (whether live or streamed) in the comments down below. As always, log back into HNHH for the latest news and updates on Tyler, The Creator and Camp Flog Gnaw.

Mick Jenkins Excels On New Album “The Patience” With JID, Freddie Gibbs & More

One of Chicago’s finest is back, and Mick Jenkins understood the assignment on his brand new album “The Patience.” Moreover, fans already knew they were getting something special with its lead single, “Smoke Break-Dance” with JID. However, the tracklist still contains a lot of surprises, different emotional pallets, instrumental styles, and consistently great lyrical performances. It’s a concise and no-filler 27 minutes across 11 tracks, and also features Freddie Gibbs, Benny The Butcher, and Vic Mensa. Furthermore, the Alabama-born and Windy City-raised MC explained the concept behind this project in a press release.

The Patience: As best I can be, I am a person who does everything within his power to change his situation,” Mick Jenkins expressed. “I think with some level of consistency, that behavior inevitably leads you to a point where you have to wait. A point where the things that now need to happen to move you forward are no longer in your control. I see this as a period of time in one’s journey, no matter the length, where the unseen things must take place; The muscles must tear and repair, the understanding of a concept coming to you in a moment completely devoid of artistic intention. It’s through these moments where I’ve found myself being the most frustrated with patience. And this body of work sounds like that frustration.”

Meanwhile, this might not be the longest or most dense album, but The Patience packs a big punch in a small swing. There are plenty of small but potent moments like the slow-burning “007,” all featured MCs’ great performances, the trap interlude “2004,” and the stark reflection on the closer. Don’t let this one fall under your radar; it’s one of the most tightly packaged efforts of the year so far. If you haven’t heard this album yet, find it on your preferred streaming service and peep the tracklist below. Also, stick around on HNHH for the latest news, reviews, and more on Mick Jenkins, and for more great hip-hop each week.

Brent Faiyaz Shows Off His Film Buff Side In “JACKIE BROWN” Music Video

Even a year after its release, Brent Faiyaz’s WASTELAND is still in heavy rotation for many R&B fans out there. What’s more is that, with 19 different tracks to choose from, there’s still plenty of space to bring each song to new heights. Moreover, that’s exactly what the Maryland native and his team achieved with this new music video for “JACKIE BROWN.” If you’re a Quentin Tarantino fan, you already know that the song’s lyrics reference the titular character of one of his more underrated films. However, with a beautiful plane vista, it seems like the visual wanted to emphasize that comparison even more.

“The clip channels the aesthetic and spirit of the 1997 Quentin Tarantino classic flick of the same name, as it opens with Brent on a plane,” a press release of Brent Faiyaz’s newest video reads. “After cruising through the clouds, he visits the salon, hits the high seas on a yacht, tries on tailored fits, and enjoys a dinner surrounded by friends. These vibrant vignettes melt into one another, matching his smooth cadence.” Furthermore, through slick editing and a slow-paced but intoxicating vocal performance and instrumental, that melting effect certainly holds true.

For example, bubbles from a jacuzzi quickly morph into bubbles from a champagne glass at dinner. While it’s not the most narratively complex video out there, its vibrant and almost regal color palette and presentation makes it pure eye candy for fans of the track. Considering the lyrical themes of life moving fast and treating a woman to luxury, the visuals do a compelling job of representing that. Overall, it’s a nice treat to dive into WASTELAND again if you’re a fan who hasn’t revisited it in some time.

Meanwhile, considering his new creative agency in partnership with UnitedMasters, there’s probably going to be a lot more exciting projects from the 27-year-old coming soon. Sure, a new album will always take precedent, but Faiyaz is clearly an entertainer who thinks larger than that. As such, all we can hope for is that we see his growth with spectacular results. For more news and the latest updates on Brent Faiyaz, keep checking in with HNHH.

Roc Nation & DJ Clue Team Up With PUMA For “Humble Soles” Mixtape For Hip-Hop 50

Roc Nation boasts a lot of talent, a pool of MCs and producers that knows the hip-hop of the past as much as rap today. In addition, they recognize the relationship between streetwear and the genre, and how special it is to celebrate its 50th birthday this week. Moreover, the label just partnered with PUMA to put together the Humble Soles mixtape hosted by the legendary DJ Clue. Of course, with that explanation, it’s no surprise that there’s a whole slew of collaborators here and a lot of glossy, inspired, and sonically powerful tracks.

Furthermore, to go through some of these Roc Nation stars, rappers like Rapsody, Vic Mensa, Reuben Vincent, Kalan.FrFr, and RJAE pop up on this tracklist. In addition, there’s Reuben Vincent, Tay Keith, Huey V, HDBeenDope, Tish Hayman, KenTheMan, Zacari, Guapdad 4000, and many more. Not only that, but everyone here shares some potent moments of chemistry throughout the mixtape, as well as plenty of variety. Some sounds are more old-school, whereas other tracks contain contemporary timbres, but every rapper and producer here seems to tap into inspirational and triumphant pallets.

Sleepy Hallow & Marshmello Join The “GBG” On New Single

No one hears “Sleepy Hallow” and thinks EDM, the same way that no one hears Marshmello and thinks “Brooklyn drill.” But what’s great about these genres is that they work so well with so many others, and with each other, you can get a catchy and faithful song to its roots. Moreover, the two artists just released the new single “GBG,” which features a high-pitched vocal sample that sounds like the lead-up to a progressive house drop of sorts. However, the song is firmly planted in New York drill territory, as the Flatbush MC always does with his hard-hitting material. While it might not be a new take on the genre or anything outside of either’s traditional comfort zones or skill sets, it makes for a pretty straightforward and instantly satisfying cut.

Furthermore, a great deal of that satisfaction comes from the fact that Sleepy Hallow stays on a consistent flow and locks into the beat smoothly. His voice propels the whole thing, rendering the chipmunks lead melodic vocals to a simple background addition to the main draw. “GBG” also benefits from a seamless verse-chorus-verse structure, where the 23-year-old’s bars are what moves one section of the track to the next rather than a melodic or instrumental switch-up. Sure, it might not be the most elaborate structure, but it’s a clear and righteous effort to spotlight Hallow’s presence on this song. He’s a leader in his scene, and one that’s unfortunately had a lot of time in his career cut short by external issues.

Meanwhile, for those unfamiliar with Marshmello, this is far from the first time that the EDM giant has crossed over into the hip-hop or R&B space. Just this year, he released the bubbly Brent Faiyaz collaboration “Fell In Love,” and will likely continue to expand his credits in the future. These two certainly set themselves up as a potentially consistent and chemistry-filled collaboration for the future. If you haven’t heard “GBG” yet, find it on your preferred streaming service and check out some notable lyrics below. Ez Mil’s “DU4LI7Y: REDUX” Is A Dense Introduction To The Eminem & Dr. Dre Signee

Ez Mil made the whole rap game turn their heads when Eminem and Dr. Dre signed him to Aftermath, Interscope, and Shady. Moreover, the Filipino-American MC is the first artist to have done so since 50 Cent back in 2002, which already sets up high expectations. Fortunately, if you’re a fan of any of these artists, you’re probably going to like what the first release after his signing, DU4LI7Y: REDUX has to offer. Across 11 tracks, Ez showcases a lot of lyrical dexterity, narrative prowess, catchy melodic writing, and crisp but grounded instrumentals. If you hadn’t heard of this new talent yet, then let this be your first taste of someone that could rise to great heights.

Furthermore, that potential is based on pretty much every aspect of songwriting and production here. In addition, it has the additional cultural component of representing his heritage, switching between rapping in English and Tagalog on songs like “27 Bodies,” and he’s equally as fiery with both. Sometimes, the production plays with more contemporary sounds, whereas others tackle dramatic and impactful boom-bap and more classic sounds. Lyrically, Ez Mil focuses a lot on not just the rap game and his come-up, but also social issues affecting his home country and beyond. With plenty of versatile flows, deliveries, and melodic approaches, the 25-year-old lays the foundation for any style he wants to expand upon.

Meanwhile, it was quite a smart choice to have “Realest” with Eminem come out before this project to build up a lot of hype. While it’s definitely a standout here for the feature alone, it’s not even close to the highest peaks on DU4LI7Y: REDUX. Here’s hoping that we continue to see more greatness from this promising young talent in the future. If you haven’t heard this album yet, find it on your preferred streaming service and check out the tracklist below. DJ Muggs Enlists Ice Cube, B-Real & MC Ren To “Dump On Em” For New Single

PSA: there’s a new old-school boom-bap posse cut with four legends for you to lend your ears to and nod your head along to. Moreover, DJ Muggs enlisted a crew of legendary MCs (Ice Cube, MC Ren, and B-Real of Cypress Hill) to bring us “Dump On Em.” Of course, with this list of collaborators, this is a classically grimy, menacing, and hardened banger with a lot of impactful lines and threatening energy. In particular, it’s great to hear Ren of N.W.A. pop up on a new track, as he’s more elusive than his collaborators here. Regardless, even if he was dropping a new album every week, this performance still stacks up well with the dark instrumental.

In fact, all the verses here showcase a lot of chemistry, charisma, and cold-blooded narratives. B-Real especially shines on this cut, not only because of his yelpy and ear-grabbing vocal tone, but for his vivid imagery and consistent flows. Furthermore, it contrasts well with the following bars from MC Ren, who still has his husky voice to emphasize the threats in his lyrics. Unsurprisingly, Ice Cube still sounds hungry to this day, and comes through with the most measured but emphatic set of lines. It might not reinvent the wheel, but it’s exactly the kind of track that displays what makes this brand of hardcore hip-hop so relevant and fresh to this day.

Meanwhile, DJ Muggs’ beat is as cold-blooded as the verses, with a thick bassline, menacing piano leads, and a dry drum pattern that switches up in the chorus. Actually, if you like this track, make sure to check out some of his other material from this year with the likes of Madlib and Mayhem Lauren. “Dump On Em” scratches an admittedly niche itch, but when it hits, there are few other styles that sounds as raw and grounded these days. If you haven’t heard this track yet, find it on your preferred streaming service and peep some notable bars down below. Also, log back into HNHH for the latest news and updates on DJ Muggs, MC Ren, B-Real, and Ice Cube.

Trippie Redd & Lil Wayne Chop Up Some Soul On New Song “I’m Mad At Me”

Trippie Redd’s A Love Letter To You 5 is finally here, and it contains no shortage of varied tracks and highlights. While many might know the Ohio singer and rapper for his more emotive, rage-heavy, or melancholy cuts, he’s got a lot of different tools at his disposal. Moreover, when you also have the help of a legend and strong influence like Lil Wayne, you can make any great song you want. Furthermore, that’s exactly what the duo brought fans on “I’m Mad At Me,” which is a soul-chopping classic cut with a lot of clean sheen and crispness. It’s a welcome change of pace for Trippie who, with every new project, seems to add another skillset to his repertoire.

Of course, the beat is what will catch you attention on first impact, sounding like some of your favorite 2000s productions. With a powerful and dramatic vocal chop, the song’s sense of immediacy and importance is heightened to another level. Sure, the crisp and vibrant drum fills don’t always pop up across the track, but it makes their hits that much more ear-grabbing on the song. Melodically, Trippie Redd allows for subtle pianos, a slinky bassline, and faint guitar strums to lead the way. Lyrically, both MCs seem to focus on a relationship that they’re trying to balance with both their hardened backstory and their current fame.

Meanwhile, both verses contain steady and expertly handled flows, especially from Weezy who sounds calmer and more focused than usual. Considering that this was one of the tracks that Trippie teased right before this album’s release, it’s great to hear that it lived up to the hype. Here’s hoping that the 24-year-old plays with this sound more in the future while he picks up a few others on the way.
